Chelsea: Frank Lampard could make Premier League history with astronomical Lionel Messi swoop

Chelsea could be eyeing an audacious swoop for one of theÂgreatest footballers of all time.Â

This summer’s transfer window has certainly been a thrilling one for the Blues, but nothing comes close to Barcelona confirming Lionel Messi has handed in a transfer request.

In a shock announcement, the La Liga heavyweights admitted the Argentina international wants to leave the club and Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for him.

The claim comes from Chelsea manager Frank Lampard’s former England teammate Rio Ferdinand, who took to Twitter among the chaos of the news. In a tweet that is now circulating on the social the platform, the ex-Manchester United man wrote: “Just heard Frank Lampard is now in for Messi. Some window this if Lamps pull this off!!”

Indeed, Chelsea have already been linked with some mega money deals, but signing the Barcelona icon would be something the Premier League has never seen before. Messi is currently valued at £100.8m but his current contract is nearing its expiration and he will be available as a free agent next summer.

However, a recent report from Mundo Deportivo (via GiveMeSport) claimed that Barca have slapped an astronomical £630m release clause on Messi’s head.

Naturally, plenty of other clubs have already shown interest in snapping up the forward, including Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea are certainly in a position to splash the cash this summer, with major money targets Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz seeming destined for west London. However, even with Roman Abramovich’s willingness to spend, Messi’s reported £630m buyout clause is almost unfathomable.

Barcelona certainly won’t want to see their star man leave for free, but if the Blues can hold out until next summer, they will be in a position to land Messi as a free agent and potentially offer him whatever wage he desires with the money saved.

Should these outrageous links come to fruition, it will land Lampard in the Premier League history books for blessing the league with Messi’s presence.

Watford v Newcastle United: Team News, Form, How to Watch

Watford host Newcastle United on Saturday lunchtime in what is a massive game for Nigel Pearson’s Hornets side, as they look for a vital three points to take them further away from the bottom three.

The Magpies themselves will be keen to get their season back on track after a heavy defeat in midweek against Manchester City. Steve Bruce will be looking to deliver the Toon’s biggest points haul in the Premier League since they were promoted in 2017.

No club in the Premier League has been impacted greater by the enforced suspension of football than Watford, who have seemingly lost the momentum they were generating since Pearson’s appointment.

It is a mammoth game for the Hornets, who realistically still need two wins to guarantee survival.

Form

Watford picked up a massive three points earlier this week, via Danny Welbeck’s spectacular winner against Norwich City. The victory put them four points clear of the bottom three and they will be hoping that they can replicate that performance and record back-to-back victories at Vicarage Road for the first time this season.

Newcastle, on the hand, have blown hot and cold throughout, where a thumping 4-1 victory over Bournemouth and a solid point against West Ham was followed by their worst defeat of the season at the hands of City.

The Toon have looked much better since the return of the Premier League and would be expecting to get at least a point out of this one.

Team news

Nigel Pearson has no new injuries to contend with following their win against Norwich, with Daryl Janmaat, Gerard Deulofeu and Isaac Success still sidelined.

The Magpies have further injury worries, with Miguel Almiron joining Allan Saint-Maximin, Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles and Sean Longstaff on the treatment table at St. James’ Park.

How to watch

Watford v Newcastle kicks off at 12:30 UTC at Vicarage Road and will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime, while fans can also live stream football online.

Tottenham Hotspur: Ex-Spur insists hiring Ledley King is a Jose Mourinho ‘masterstroke’

Darren Bent insists appointing Ledley King as a first-team coach at Tottenham Hotspur is a “masterstroke” by Jose Mourinho.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs striker admits he is surprised it hasn’t happened sooner.

Recent reports revealed that King had held talks about joining the backroom staff at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Mourinho announced his assistant Ricardo Formosinho would be leaving north London to pursue his own career as a head coach.

Mourinho has now confirmed that the club’s former captain will be linking up with his coaching staff next season.

Spurs qualified for the Europa League with a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on the final day of the season, and Mourinho dropped the news immediately after the game.

The pundit, who played with King at White Hart Lane, believes the move will win Mourinho favour with the fans.

Bent told assistant editor Russell Edge “that guy can do the lot, he can do everything – play, defend, everything, and he did it with one leg.”

“Do you know what’s mad though? I’ve always thought to myself surely when he retired one of the managers would get him on board on the coaching staff defensively. Honestly, outstanding.”

“I don’t know if it was him that didn’t or what but it didn’t happen but I always felt managers were missing a trick with him because this guy, the fans love him – that’s a way to get the fans on board because they idolise him – he’s obviously that good as well.”

“It’s a masterstroke from Mourinho if he pulls that off.”

It is hard to argue with Bent here, as King is a hugely popular figure amongst the fan base.

King, 39, made 323 appearances for Spurs, scoring 14 goals in all competitions, famously winning the League Cup in 2008.

After breaking through the ranks, the academy graduate led the club for seven years, until a recurring knee injury forced him to retire at the age of just 31.

The arrival of Martin Jol coincided with King’s revival, as together the duo laid the foundations that turned Tottenham into a team capable of challenging for a place in the Champions League.

The firm favourite enjoys the honour of hearing his name ring out on the 26th minute of every game to mark his shirt number and he has worked as a club ambassador up until now.

Despite the fact his playing career was sadly cut short, King knows the club inside and out, and his local knowledge could prove useful.

The Lilywhites have leaked goals for fun throughout the season and fans will be hoping the veteran can fix their defensive frailties on the training pitch.

Whether or not he will be able to make an immediate impact remains to be seen.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs tipped to sign ‘tremendous’ target who has been linked to Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur would be the perfect choice for Lille striker Victor Osimhen, according to Gabriele Marcotti via The Daily Express.

Osimhen has been linked to Tottenham and Arsenal after an impressive debut season in Ligue 1. Indeed, after arriving from RSC Charleroi for £10.8m last summer, the youngster has scored 18 goals for Lille in all competitions so far.

Jose Mourinho is in the market for a new striker to provide injury cover for Harry Kane.

Speaking on the Gab and Juls podcast, Marcotti pointed out the obvious similarities between the two players. He added he could even see the duo playing together in the future.

The football expert said: “I think he would be a tremendous fit for Spurs because in terms of style of play, I’m not saying he’s as good, but there are obvious parallels with Harry Kane there.

“He could play with Kane, he could play when Kane is not available.

“Osimhen, Kane, Son, Lucas Moura, Bergwijn, that’s a ton of firepower. Obviously Mourinho’s got good links with that club, so we’ll see.”

As it stands, it is easy to compare the two strikers.

Despite his young age, the 21-year-old has quickly made up for his lack of experience. Indeed, Osimhen has netted 13 goals in Ligue 1, creating 4 assists and taking 3.2 shots per game (WhoScored). Furthermore, he is the club’s leading goalscorer this season (BBC).

In comparison, Kane has bagged 11 goals in the Premier League for Mourinho’s side at the time of writing, and is the Lilywhites’ top scorer so far, despite the fact he suffered a hamstring injury.

However, ESPN correspondent Julien Laurens revealed Lille are asking for somewhere in the region of the £72m they received from Arsenal for Nicolas Pepe last year.

Whether or not Daniel Levy splashes the cash remains to be seen, given the economic uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, but the Nigerian would certainly be an ideal alternative for Kane in the future.

Tottenham fans, do you think the board should sign Victor Osimhen in the summer? Let us know down below!

The Chalkboard: Ben Watson still has a Forest future, but only as part of a midfield three

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest midfielder Ben Watson made his first start since October in his side’s 3-1 win against Wigan Athletic at The City Ground last weekend, and his future prospects are certainly looking much brighter under Martin O’Neill than they were just few weeks ago.

On the chalkboard

Well, despite finishing the 2017/18 campaign in fine form and often captaining the Reds in the early stages of the current Championship season, the 33-year-old fell out of favour under previous manager Aitor Karanka following the 2-1 home defeat by Norwich City on October 20.

The midfielder suddenly found himself behind the likes of Adlene Guedioura, Claudio Yacob and Jack Colback in the central midfield pecking order, and on nine occasions between October and January he didn’t even make the substitutes’ bench for Forest in the league.

That changed following the arrival of O’Neill as Karanka’s successor however, and while he was an unused member of the 18-man squad against Bristol City he was reinstated to the starting XI and even named as skipper against the Latics last time out.

Does he have a big role to play now?

He does, but only one condition.

In the 4-4-2 system that O’Neill employed in his first match at The City Ground there should be no spot for the 33-year-old, as he no longer has the legs and box-to-box ambitions to only have one teammate alongside him.

It is no coincidence that Watson impressed as part of a midfield trio in a 4-3-3 against his former club last Saturday however, and while he did his job defensively well he could also advance forward too, knowing that he potentially had two players that would cover him if needed.

Watson looked destined for the exit door either this month or in the summer had Karanka remained with the east Midlands outfit, but with a contract not due to expire until the summer of 2020 he now must grasp the new opportunity he has been handed.

‘Do whatever they want’ – Mauricio Pochettino reacts to dressing room visits from Chelsea owners Todd Boehly & Behdad Eghbali

Mauricio Pochettino claims to have no issue with Chelsea’s owners paying regular visits to the dressing room, saying “they can do whatever they want”.

Todd Boehly sparked controversy last season when it was revealed that he had stepped inside the locker room to deliver post-game speeches to an underperforming squad. It has now been reported that fellow co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali faced up to the Blues players following a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pochettino could be forgiven for feeling as though his toes are being trodden on by those from the boardroom, as the dressing room is his domain, but the Argentine insists he is happy for those pumping big money into the club to go wherever they like. He has said: “I like when the owners come, in all my career as a coach, at Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, Paris-Saint Germain. It is good that the owner came to the dressing room. The way they approach the players is most important. If they are in a good way and a correct way, they are very welcome.

“After my press conference after the game against Aston Villa, they came and chill with us, like normally. Also against Liverpool, Luton, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, they came with Paul and Laurence and Behdad. We talk about the game. I don't see it in a bad way. It would be different if they came for a speech or something, but with the way they came, of course they are very welcome. They own the club, they can do whatever they want! We are so glad they came and shared with us – even when it's good things and we won the game, but even on Sunday where we lost and we are suffering.”

WHAT THEY SAID

Pochettino is said to be falling under mounting pressure just a matter of weeks into his tenure at Stamford Bridge – with Chelsea currently sat 14th in the Premier League table – but he says the job he has taken on is no tougher than he imagined. The South American added: “It's not worse than I thought. I think we always knew the new project is always difficult. This period is a worse scenario than we can think to anticipate the situation. It looks like all is against us because the performance of the team deserves more points. All teams go through different periods, and I think we have the capacity to turn this.”

UK government rinsed for Fabrizio Romano-esque announcement tweets as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reshuffles cabinet

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been ridiculed for using Fabrizio Romano-esque announcement tweets to reveal changes to his cabinet.

Cabinet reshuffle teased with 'Here We Go' catchphrase Further transfer lingo employed to announce appointments Football fans unimpressedWHAT HAPPENED?

While the political world set about dissecting the ramifications of Sunak's cabinet reshuffle on Monday, keen-eyed football fans were quick to notice some familiar language on the Conservative Party's social media feeds.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) trailing the reshuffle employed Fabrizio Romano "Here we go" catchphrase along with the message that the tagline: "Rishi Sunak strengthens his team." James Cleverly's appointment as Home Secretary about an hour later was announced as a "huge move." While further transfer lingo such as "agreement reached" and "confirmed" were to follow.

Sunak's spell as prime minister has seen an upgrade in Downing Street's social media game, with music-backed videos detailing his latest work a regular feature. Sunak is a fan of Championship side Southampton fan and has been spotted at St Mary's on occasion. Though few saw a major government reshuffle being themed on transfer guru Romano coming. And many were less than impressed.

WHAT THEY SAID

"Fabrizio Romano wants his catchphrase back," ordered one account.

"Who is in charge of the social media team? You're an official government page, not a football team announcing a deadline day transfer deal," grumbled another.

The man himself eventually replied, his shocked-face emoji clearly implying he was not in on the plan.

WHAT NEXT FOR RISHI SUNAK?

Presumably the football cliches will be set aside for the more serious business of running a government. Although Sunak will hope he can emulate his team Southampton by putting aside a rocky start and trying to produce an impressive set of results.

How Man Utd should line up for the 2023-24 season: Drop Antony and unleash Alejandro Garnacho!

The Argentine teenager is ready to kick on after a stunning breakthrough season and must be given a regular place in the starting XI by Erik ten Hag

There were two chants at Old Trafford last season that were heard more than any others. One was "We want Glazers out", a defiant message to the club's despised owners that was aired after every goal. And the other was "Viva Garnacho", an ode to Manchester United fans' latest idol.

Alejandro Garnacho was already well known to supporters for his role in United's FA Youth Cup win and he made a thrilling step up to the first team last season, firing in crucial goals against Real Sociedad, Fulham, Leeds, West Ham and Wolves. Had it not been for an untimely ankle ligament injury, he could have achieved even more.

The forward has just turned 19 but he is already an Argentina international and he is determined to make an even bigger impression in his first full season with the first team. The only problem is he shares a favourite position, on the left of attack, with Marcus Rashford. However, there is an alternative position that could open up and that is as a right forward, and he has a much better chance of unseating its current occupier, Antony, than United's homegrown talisman.

Antony had a handful of great moments last season but ultimately failed to live up to his £85 million ($107m) price tag and ended the campaign with a meagre eight goals and four assists in 44 appearances in all competitions. Garnacho, in 34 appearances and far fewer minutes, managed five goals and five assists.

United should not write Antony off just yet but Garnacho is hammering at the door of the starting XI and deserves far more opportunities this season. He is easily good enough for a regular place in the team and on present form is more deserving of a staring berth than his Brazilian team-mate.

Choosing between Garnacho and Antony is Erik ten Hag's biggest selection dilemma although he will also need to decide which defenders will work best with new goalkeeper Andre Onana and whether big-money signing Rasmus Hojlund should start regularly or have a bedding-in process.

As United prepare to kick off their Premier League campaign against Wolves on Monday, GOAL looks at how Ten Hag's side should line up this season…

GettyGK: Andre Onana

The Cameroonian was hand-picked by Ten Hag to replace David de Gea and has the ability to transform United's style of play and get them playing exactly how the manager wants. Onana will demand a lot of his defenders and has a huge personality which he will impose on the team. He's exactly what United need after years of standing still in such a vital position. However, he is bound to make a few high-profile errors due to his flamboyant style.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bissaka was one of United's most improved players last season and won his place in the line-up back from Diogo Dalot. The pair will have another close rivalry for the position and although the Portuguese offers more going forward, Wan-Bissaka is far more solid and reliable and should be first-choice, especially against the top sides.

Getty CB: Raphael Varane

Varane is unquestionably in the starting line-up but his propensity to pick up small injuries means he will likely miss a number of games and Victor Lindelof will be called into action.

The Frenchman has seen it all after winning a World Cup and five Champions Leagues and his experience and control helped him work up a solid partnership with Lisandro Martinez. He is also fully focused on United after retiring from France duty earlier in the year.

Getty CB: Lisandro Martinez

The Argentina defender silenced the doubters with an exceptional first campaign with United. He has remarkable passing ability and courage to bring the ball out from the back and play his way out of pressure. He is sure to be an ally of Onana and has already sung the praises of his new goalkeeper.

Martinez's real impact became glaringly obvious when he fractured his metatarsal in April and the team limped over the line towards a top-four finish but he has fully recovered and in pre-season he demonstrated that the injury has not affected his desire to compete and win.

New manager, same Chelsea? Blues must not panic despite slow start under Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea's long-standing problems reared their ugly head in the hugely disappointing defeat at West Ham, but patience is needed at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea were never going to be a quick fix, but after taking an encouraging – if tentative – step forward in securing a creditable point against Liverpool on the opening day, the Blues took two large strides backwards as they were humbled by West Ham in their second outing of the season on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino's first defeat as head coach has left more questions than answers, as whatever potential his side might have to achieve tangible success remains clouded – despite an eye-watering £346 million ($442m) spend this summer alone.

So, where do the Blues stand after just two games played, as chronic issues begin to pinch once again? GOAL assesses the situation at Stamford Bridge…

GettyLacking cohesion

It was inevitable that it would take some time for Chelsea to click at the beginning of this season amid this summer's unprecedented upheaval. There were the early signs of synergy in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool, with almost everything flowing through the brilliant Enzo Fernandez.

However, as the Argentine toiled against West Ham, any semblance of cohesion between his team-mates seemed to disintegrate. While Raheem Sterling shone, there were calamitous breakdowns in communication in defence for all three goals conceded, while Nicolas Jackson was isolated up front.

Pochettino's men actually dominated the ball and passed with accuracy, but there was an element of not playing to each other's strengths and without incisiveness – with runs wasted and the ball often sent backwards.

However, time heal all wounds, and it's clear the manager is yet to settle on his strongest line-up – especially following Moises Caicedo's £115m ($146m) arrival from Brighton.

Of course, there's no guarantee that throwing money at the problem is the solution. Chelsea learned that the hard way last season, and with the squad still bloated as the transfer window ticks down – the cause of many of their problems as they completely lacked a togetherness last season – they cannot afford to repeat their mistakes.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesInjury problems won't go away

"I don't think you should blame everything on luck that's for sure. I think we can have a look and see what we can do better. Obviously, I've been here a few weeks so I haven't got the answers completely. But clearly, we want to always try to improve and that's an area that we can probably improve."

Those were the words of former Chelsea manager Graham Potter in October 2022, when he was queried on the club's troubling fitness record in recent times. Fast-forward 10 months and the situation is much the same, if not worse.

Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Armando Broja, Marcus Bettinelli and, most recently, Carney Chukwuemeka, all find themselves on the treatment table with the 2023-24 campaign in its infancy.

Indeed, compatriots Fofana and Nkunku were ruled out with long-term knee injuries before a ball had been kicked, while James and Chukwuemeka were sidelined for a number of weeks either side of the West Ham defeat in matchweek two.

Having eight players out injured is arguably tantamount to a crisis, and Pochettino and his fitness coaches face a huge challenge in preventing avoidable injuries going forward. Chelsea clearly cannot afford to be without their best players at this early stage of their development as a team.

Getty ImagesUnable to shake the goal-shyness

Chelsea's inability to create chances and score goals became infamous in 2022-23. Indeed, the Blues ranked 15th in the Premier League for goals scored throughout 2022-23; a damning statistic. The 3-1 reverse at the London Stadium will have undoubtedly set off alarm bells for those supporters who watched Chelsea struggle in front of goal on a regular basis last term, then.

Granted, they created openings at will against an offensive-minded Liverpool side who had gaps in the midfield and a leaky defence on the opening day, although they were let down by some profligate finishing.

That creativity was nowhere to be seen against a more defensive-minded West Ham side despite them monopolising possession, in a display that was emblematic of many of their very worst performances last season. They finished the match with an xG of 2.49 from 17 shots taken, including Enzo's missed penalty, while West Ham's was just 1.8.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: "Teams like us, we need to get the right balance. We should have won the game with our first half. To find the space to create clear chances [is difficult] but overall it is this type of game that is difficult to explain. You had the possession, you create and maybe you were the better side, but in the end you lose."

So what is the solution? Jackson looks capable of becoming a prolific striker once he has gotten off the mark, but Chelsea's cause obviously hasn't been helped by the untimely serious injury to Nkunku – a player who contributed 70 goals and 56 assists in just 172 appearances for RB Leipzig. The Blues were relying on him.

Despite all the money spent, it's perhaps unsurprising that they're on the lookout for a creative player who can play at No.10 or out wide.

Getty ImagesContinuing battle to get wins

In terms of the surviving members of last season's squad especially, this is not a group of players who are not used to winning games, so it's hardly a shock to see them failing to get over the line despite the raft of new faces.

To understand just how deep-rooted an issue this is when it comes to fostering a winning mentality, it's worth noting that Chelsea have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games (D5 L8), and are winless in six since a 3-1 win at Bournemouth in May (D3 L3).

Thankfully the fixture list has been kind to the Blues, with games against presumed relegation-strugglers Luton Town, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth to come either side of a home Carabao Cup tie against AFC Wimbledon. Beyond that, Aston Villa will provide a stern challenge, but victories will be expected against Fulham and Burnley.

Things become much trickier in late October, but Pochettino will see the preceding weeks as absolutely crucial in building confidence, getting points on the board and drawing that winning ruthlessness out of his players.

Musiala doesn't deserve it to end like this! Germany winners, losers & ratings as it's yet ANOTHER World Cup failure – and don't mention the VAR

There was huge drama in Group E as a controversial VAR call sent Japan through, while Germany were knocked out at the group stages yet again.

It was too little, too late for Germany as they crashed out of the World Cup despite beating Costa Rica 4-2 on Thursday night.

Hansi Flick's team were dominant from the beginning of the match as they chased the vital victory they needed to surely put them through. They did their bit and got the three points but with Japan incredibly beating Spain it wasn't enough.

The tension was evident. Germany buckled initially as Costa Rica found a way back into the game, with Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger producing moments of madness to allow their opponents to take a shock lead.

Serge Gnabry and Kai Havertz were there to rescue Flick's side, however, with the Bayern Munich winger chipping in with the opening goal and a vital assist, while the Chelsea forward came off the bench to score twice.

Having lost to Japan, drawn with Spain and then allowed Costa Rica to give them a real scare in what should have been an easy win going by the first-half performance, few would argue that Germany really deserved a place in the next round of the tournament.

They were simply too inconsistent and sloppy in the key moments in this competition and although they may turn their anger towards VAR following a controversial call in the clash between Spain and Japan, they must first acknowledge their own shortcomings in Qatar.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Jamal Musiala:

The young attacking midfielder has shown throughout this tournament why he is so revered in Germany and this game was yet another example. He was a real threat for his team with his dribbling and his neat and dangerous passes. He hit the post on two occasions in the second half after Costa Rica equalised and looked like the man most likely to get his team out of danger after they surrendered the lead. He had so much more to offer this tournament and he doesn't deserve it to end like this. One of few German players to enhance their reputation, and transfer value, despite heading home early.

Kai Havertz:

He certainly proved to Hansi Flick that he should have been involved in the starting XI in this game. Thomas Muller got the nod ahead of the Chelsea forward but he came on to take the Bayern Munich star's place and was immediately effective with the 2-2 goal. He then added his side's third, getting on the end of a Serge Gnabry pass. What might have been had Germany made it through, with Havertz's confidence having been restored.

Stephanie Frappart & the match officials:

The referee made history as she was at the front of an all-female team controlling a men's World Cup match for the first time. The referee and her team did not make any big mistakes in this match and were fully in charge, letting the game flow while assistants Neuza Back and Karen Diaz Medina were valuable in their support.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Manuel Neuer:

Two big blunders from the goalkeeper in the second half saw Germany let their lead slip. He spilled the initial header that allowed Yeltsin Tejeda to spring into action and fire in the equaliser, then he was caught simply flapping at the ball as Juan Pablo Vargas put his team ahead with 20 minutes remaining. A terrible collapse from the Germany legend considering he pulled off a vital save in the first half to deny Keysher Fuller.

Antonio Rudiger:

He was exposed in each half by Fuller. He did nothing to stop the full-back as he was presented with a golden opportunity to equalise in the first half and was too easily shrugged off. Then he barely closed him down to stop the Costa Rica star sending in the cross that resulted in his side's equaliser. Simply not good enough from a defender that should be relied upon to stamp out such danger.

Thomas Muller:

He was barely involved throughout the game as he moved out wide and deep in an attempt to retrieve the ball. It was a completely ineffective performance from the Bayern Munich veteran as he allowed those around him to dictate and threaten the Costa Rica goal. His replacement managed to influence the game immediately, whereas Muller was simply a ghost for the most part. That may have been his last ever game for his country, and what a sad way to bow out.

VAR:

Once again the video assistant referee has been involved in another controversial call at the World Cup and Germany will feel hard done by. Japan were awarded a goal against Spain despite claims that the ball had gone out of play. Even after the replays it is tough to tell who was correct but Japan being awarded that goal has essentially knocked Germany out of the competition as a draw in that other match would have seen Hansi Flick's men progress.

Getty ImagesGermany Ratings: Defence

Manuel Neuer (4/10):

He pulled off a strong save to deny Fuller late in the first half and was on hand to deal with the subsequent corner but his interventions in the second period were woeful. He let the ball slip after saving a shot that allowed Tejeda to equalise and then completely fell apart for the second goal.

Joshua Kimmich (7/10):

Always pushing up from out wide and available for a pass throughout the first half, in which he did not have too much to do defensively but he was alert and quick to get back when he needed to. He moved into the midfield once Klostermann came on for the second half to help improve Germany's use of the ball from the centre of the field.

Niklas Sule (5/10):

Did nothing of note throughout this match.

Antonio Rudiger (5/10):

Barely put up any challenge to Fuller when the Costa Rica star was presented with a goalscoring opportunity. The full-back simply shrugged him off before Neuer came to Rudiger's rescue with the save. He put no effort into stopping Fuller in the second half in the lead up to Costa Rica's eventual equaliser, either.

David Raum (6/10):

Made a quality cross to set up the opening goal and was up and down the left side of the field all night, staying wide and looking to get the ball into the box for the forwards. However, he barely tried to cut out the ball that found its way to Fuller and gave Costa Rica a chance to equalise in the first half.

Getty ImagesMidfield

Leon Goretzka (5/10):

Had an early header saved by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas but otherwise made very little impact in this game before he was substituted at the break.

Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

The Manchester City midfielder sat deep and mostly tried to move the ball on to Musiala or wide to the full-backs. He kept the ball circulating well but Costa Rica's deep defence often made it hard to pull off more ambitious passes.

Jamal Musiala (8/10):

Looked a threat right from the beginning of the game, finding space outside the Costa Rica box and forcing Keylor Navas into making a save and earning a corner. Shortly afterwards he fed Serge Gnabry through for a dangerous chance but the winger was offside. Musiala had plenty of movement to make sure he was always available for a pass and kept pressing the opposition to win back the ball. Every time he got on the ball and dribbled he looked capable of creating something. Top stuff from a top player.
