Boyland makes worrying Everton claim

Everton are struggling to secure their safety in the Premier League for next season, and with an important clash against their relegation rivals Burnley tomorrow at Turf Moor, there has been some more disappointing news for Frank Lampard.

What’s the word?

Journalist, Patrick Boyland, told a forum on The Athletic that Seamus Coleman is out due to illness and did not give a timeframe on his expected return to Finch Farm.

In ten words, he simply said: “Been told Nathan Patterson and Gomes are injured. Coleman sick.”

Lampard will be fuming

Everton were dealt a 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium last weekend which means they are currently still just three points clear of the relegation zone going into their game against Sean Dyche’s side on Wednesday evening and there is no doubt that Lampard will be fuming after losing so many players in his defensive line over the last few weeks.

Jonjoe Kenny featured in the right-back role against the Hammers and if Coleman is still sick whilst youngster Nathan Patterson has been confirmed injured, the manager will have no choice but to select the 25-year-old as his only fit defender who is experienced in playing the position in the squad.

Considering he is one of the players to have been sent off late, it does not bode particularly well for the Toffees.

On top of that, Michael Keane was also sent off on Sunday afternoon leaving another hole for Lampard to fill, and another position also harboured with injury problems as centre-back Yerry Mina was confirmed by the Toffees boss to be “back in the next couple of weeks” and would be highly unlikely to be available tomorrow evening vs Burnley.

Club captain Coleman’s absence would be especially gutting for Lampard as the game against Burnley could be a real opportunity to put a gap between themselves and their fellow relegation battling side, and the Premier League midfielder turned manager would surely be hoping he could rely on his experienced players to show character in the clash.

Despite Boyland’s update, it will ultimately come down to Lampard’s pre-match press conference this afternoon to determine exactly what condition Coleman is in ahead of the mid-week fixture, and should the defender be available following a speedy recovery it will be a huge boost for the Everton team going into the game as they seek to distance themselves from relegation.

Celtic: McLeish urges fresh Rogic talks

Pundit Alex McLeish has urged Celtic to open talks with midfielder Tom Rogic regarding a new contract, Football Insider report.

The lowdown: Ange plays down talks

Despite the 29-year-old fast approaching the final 12 months of a deal at Celtic Park, Ange Postecoglou was calm over his compatriot’s future when speaking back in February.

The Hoops’ boss has continued to rely heavily on the Australian ace though, calling upon the ever-reliable midfielder on 44 occasions across all competitions so far.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This importance hasn’t gone unnoticed as onlookers begin to speculate as to when Rogic’s future could be resolved.

The verdict: McLeish has his say

A reliable report from The Athletic has claimed that the man signed for £432,000 from Central Coast in 2013 (Transfermarkt) could look to move onto pastures new and head to Asia at the end of the season if Celtic win the league.

Speaking to FI, ex-Scotland boss McLeish is hoping that won’t happen, urging the club to open negotiations with a transformed Rogic in the near future.

“He’s been the bane of everybody recently, but he was invisible for a big period. It’s taken his countryman, Postecoglou, to come in and show the faith in him again.

“And he’s rewarded his gaffer with some incredible performances. I would have thought Celtic would make it a high priority to get Tom on board for a few more seasons.”

The verdict: No brainer

Despite an influx of exciting arrivals at Lennoxtown under the watch of Postecoglou, should all parties be willing to extend, a new deal for the 51-cap Australia star should be a straightforward decision for the club.

So far this season Rogic has scored six times and provided ten assists for Postecoglou’s side and seems certain to play a huge role in the Bhoys’ quest for a domestic treble.

As per Whoscored, the Aussie is one of the most creative players in the squad, with only three players (min. 700 minutes) creating more chances in Premiership action this season – he is simply too good to let walk.

Sunderland fans slam Embleton vs Bolton

Many Sunderland fans were left slamming the display of Elliot Embleton in their 6-0 loss away at Bolton Wanderers in League One on Saturday afternoon.

It was a day to forget for manager Lee Johnson and his team, in what could turn out to be a very damaging defeat in the race for automatic promotion up to the Championship.

Embleton was just one of a number of poor performers for the Stadium of Light faithful, missing with both of his shots at goal, while he also failed to record a single successful dribble and lost possession of the ball eight times (SofaScore).

He also recorded fewer touches than his own goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, highlighting his lack of impact from an attacking point of view.

Sunderland fans slam Embleton

These Black Cats slammed his performance on Twitter, with one SAFC supporter going as far as to claim that he was a ‘passenger’ in the match, criticism which is certainly backed by the numbers:

Wolves must avoid Trincao this summer

An update has emerged on both Trincao and Adama Traore’s future at Wolves.

What’s the news?

According to a number of reports in Spain, Barcelona will only sign Adama Traore permanently if Wolves sign the Portuguese winger permanently – leading to the La Liga giants’ club president Joan Laporta claiming that a deal could be completed if Trincao is used as a makeweight.

“I think a swap deal with Wolves between Francisco Trincao and Adama Traore could be a very good option,” said Laporta.

Must avoid for Wolves

Wolves’ woes in front of goal have continued on from Nuno Santo’s time in charge of the team, into the Bruno Lage era – having scored the fifth-lowest amount of goals in the Premier League this campaign.

Not helped by Raul Jimenez and Hwang Hee-chan’s total goal haul of 11 for the season so far between them, as well as £36m signing Fabio Silva failing to add any at all in the top flight – Lage will likely be looking to overhaul his attack in the summer – or at least improve it.

With Pedro Neto returning from injury, he can finally replace loanee Trincao as the starting inverted right winger in the team, after the Barcelona-owned youngster has failed to establish himself as a Premier League quality forward since joining last summer.

As a result, signing Trincao permanently next summer would not make much sense with the forward, who was dubbed “toothless” by Nathan Judah, scoring just one goal and assisting only one more in 22 appearances for the West Midlands side.

If they are to have European ambitions, the £19.8m-rated flop is not the player to take them forward and must be axed this summer. There is simply no point in bringing a player who is on £131k per week to the club to play back-up.

Instead, Lage would benefit more from spending the Adama money on other positions in the squad, and promoting one of the exciting young prospects in the academy – like left-footed Canada international Theo Corbeanu.

Injury News: Potential Winks absence gives Wanyama chance to be a Tottenham hero

[ad_pod ]Tottenham Hotspur confirmed via their official Twitter account on Friday that midfielder Harry Winks is being assessed ahead of the north London derby against Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday with a hip injury, and it could give teammate Victor Wanyama a big chance.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the England international has become a key part of the Spurs team this season and been a consistent starter – he has played the full 90 minutes in nine of their previous 11 Premier League fixtures.

That included the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, but it appears that between then and now he has picked up a hip issue, which could potentially see him miss out against the Gunners.

The news would be a big blow to Mauricio Pochettino and the supporters given the 23-year-old has been one of their most impressive performers in recent times, forming a strong partnership with Moussa Sissoko at the heart of the midfield.

Opportunity knocks

One man’s misfortune can be another one’s gain in this case however, with Wanyama waiting in the wings following his own return from injury.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas lifts the lid on the North London Derby’s famous 4-4 – Check out the video below…

The 27-year-old has been an unused substitute in three of the club’s last four top-flight matches, playing 10 minutes in the win against Leicester City.

With Eric Dier also out as he recovers from illness and Mousa Dembele leaving during the January transfer window, the only other options Pochettino really has to slot in alongside Sissoko would be Christian Eriksen or Oliver Skipp, but Wanyama would provide the bite and strength those two perhaps don’t really have.

The Kenya international would surely also thrive to return to the XI on such a big occasion, giving him the rare chance to be a Tottenham hero.

Leeds step up chase for Josko Gvardiol

Leeds United are now stepping up their chase to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to reports, Jesse Marsch’s side have tracked the Croatia international for two years now, and they initially came close to signing him back in the summer of 2020.

It is now suggested that Victor Orta and his recruitment team have continued to keep tabs on the defender and are finally ready to make their move.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

However, while Leeds scouts have been present at some of his recent matches, they are likely to face competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature too.

Perfect signing for Marsch

Valued at a whopping £100m by CIES, a fee which would shatter Leeds’ club-record outlay, Gvardiol is very much emerging as one of European football’s brightest centre-back prospects.

In an analytics-based profile done on the 20-year-old by The Athletic, they noted: “When it comes to defending, Gvardiol looks to be well-trained in the aggressive Leipzig way. He is always active in getting tight to his man (defending intensity 99 out of 99). He is also above average in his frequency of ball recoveries and interceptions (79 out of 99), highlighting how much he likes to step out and read the play.”

Meanwhile, in a piece for BBC Sport earlier last month, journalist Izak Ante Sucic claimed that the defender is “built like a tank” and that those in his homeland liken him to Liverpool powerhouse Virgil van Dijk.

He said: “In Croatia we like to compare him to Virgil van Dijk, because he’s built that way (6 foot 1). He’s one of his role models in football and he’s also mentioned Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos – Ramos because he’s also one of those players who likes to score as many goals as he can.

“In my opinion, I think he can be as good as Virgil one day. When you see how he behaves on the field and off the field, he’s one of those guys where you’d say ‘he’s going to succeed’.”

The Van Dijk comparisons certainly paint a picture of just how highly-rated Gvardiol is, and given the Whites’ defensive troubles this season – they have conceded 68 goals in the Premier League, the most of any team – he could come in and have a huge impact.

Also, with his ability to play at both centre-back and left-back, the young Croatian offers a versatility which would be invaluable to Marsch, given both the club’s tragic injury record and the unconvincing performances of summer signing Junior Firpo.

It’s a move which would certainly have the Leeds manager delighted.

Pearce confirms Origi’s summer exit

Divock Origi will definitely leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window, reports reliable journalist James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Origi exit expected

The Belgian has enjoyed a truly memorable Reds career, rarely being a key player but popping up with a long list of massive goals along the way, both in the Premier League and Champions League.

With Origi out of contract at the end of the season, he is expected to move on, with AC Milan looking highly likely to be his next destination.

It will allow the 27-year-old to be a regular elsewhere, potentially further fulfilling his promise, having been described as ‘world-class’ and a ‘monster’ by Jurgen Klopp.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-30/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Pearce confirms imminent move

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Pearce confirmed that Origi would definitely be moving on once this campaign reaches this conclusion:

“Divock Origi will leave Liverpool this summer.”

The Verdict: Undisputed Liverpool legend

When the time finally comes for Origi to leave Liverpool, he will receive a wonderful and deserved send-off from the supporters, having become a Reds legend.

His cult hero status can almost work against what a top-quality attacker he is, though, with the forward scoring 41 goals and 173 appearances in total, not to mention registering 17 assists.

It makes perfect sense for Origi to move on, given his lack of playing time, and it would be heartwarming to see him performing as a key man elsewhere.

Doherty has robbed Spurs blind for months

The signing of Matt Doherty at Tottenham Hotspur has always been a strange one.

£15m gamble

Back in the summer of 2020, the north London outfit – who had Jose Mourinho at the helm – splashed out around £15m on the Jorge Mendes client after regularly featuring at right wing-back for Wolverhampton Wanderers

The problem was instantly clear. Mourinho’s system did not cater for an attack-minded option in the role, meaning he found it very hard to adapt and was often left to play second fiddle behind Serge Aurier.

What adds further mystery to his arrival is that he couldn’t even break into the starting XI under his former Wolves boss Nuno Santo, who would only last a mere few months in the dugout.

Now he’s been gifted a manager in Antonio Conte that plays a system that fits his attributes like a glove and he’s still not the no.1 choice.

A truly baffling signing in the first place.

Robbing Spurs blind

Over the past one-and-a-half years (76 weeks to be precise), the 25-time Republic of Ireland international has played 45 times for Spurs, where he has delivered no goals and just five assists, as per Transfermarkt.

In that time, his transfer valuation has dwindled, sinking down to £10.8m. And that’s hardly a surprise given the fact that he’s played only 3,241 minutes on the pitch, which works out to be about 72 minutes per appearance.

Doherty is thought to be sitting pretty on £74k-per-week, according to Salary Sport, and that’s more than the likes of Sergio Reguilon (£68k-per-week), Davinson Sanchez (£67k-per-week) and Emerson Royal (£62k-per-week), who all start more games under Conte.

It means the 30-year-old has taken a total of £5.6m from chairman Daniel Levy’s coffers in wages alone, meaning the total outlay of his transfer sits at £20.6m – and counting. He’s still under contract until 2024.

That is an awful waste of money, indeed.

By comparison, Spurs signed Heung-min Son for an initial £22m back in 2015 and look at the impact he has had over the years. A stark contrast to that of the former Wolves ace.

It’s fair to suggest that the Lilywhites have not got their value for Doherty and it’s evident that he will never have a long-lasting impact here, especially considering his age and where he sits in the pecking order.

A weird signing to begin with, the Irishman has been nothing short of a disastrous signing for the north Londoners.

Sky drop ‘huge’ West Brom manager update

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), reporter Rob Dorsett has shared some ‘huge news’ out of West Bromwich Albion involving Steve Bruce.

The Lowdown: Ismael sacked…

After eight months in charge, former Baggies boss Valerien Ismael was given his marching orders, with The Daily Mail claiming that he had lost the faith of West Brom’s playing staff in recent weeks.

His assistant Adam Murray has also departed The Hawthorns as the Championship promotion-chasers now commence their search for Ismael’s replacement.

This comes as West Brom drop off the pace in their battle to secure promotion back to the Premier League, with Sky Sports now sharing ‘huge news’ on the club’s quest for a new manager.

The Latest: Sky drop ‘huge’ Bruce news…

As per the reliable broadcaster, Albion are now in advanced talks to appoint Bruce as their new boss as Dorsett shares ‘huge news’ out of the club on Wednesday evening.

“I can tell you, I’ve been told from senior sources that Steve Bruce is in advanced negotiations with West Bromwich Albion right now to potentially take over as their new head coach,” he explained on live TV.

“I think Albion probably wanted to keep this news quiet, but it’s huge news and it has leaked to me, what huge news that would be if Steve Bruce decided to step back into football management now.”

The Verdict: Right candidate?

While the 61-year-old has averaged a pretty tame 1.36 points per game over his career as a coach, overseeing almost as many losses as victories recorded (Transfermarkt), his record of achieving promotion is one plus point to this potential appointment.

Luke Edwards of The Telegraph highlighted how Bruce has earned more promotions from England’s second tier under his belt than any other manager, adding that it is ‘understandable’ why West Brom are interested (Twitter).

If the Baggies confirm this appointment today, the rest of 2021/22 will certainly be interesting.

Newcastle transfer news on Nunez

Keith Downie has now dropped some exciting Newcastle United transfer news involving Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Offer reports

The St. James’ Park faithful have reportedly already made an offer for Nunez, as they look to chase a marquee signing in the summer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He is one of the most sought-after players in European football at the moment after scoring 33 goals in just 38 matches in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Nunez watched

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sky Sports journalist and North East reporter Downie has now shared that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) have indeed ‘watched’ Nunez ahead of a potential move in the summer, although he did not confirm if an offer has been made:

“Nunez is someone they’ve looked at, they’ve watched. I think a proven goalscorer on the European stage will be one of the main priorities, if not the priority in the summer.”

The Verdict: Exciting

It is certainly exciting for the Toon Army to be linked with a player like Nunez going into the summer, even if Downie believes they are just at the scouting stage right now.

After their 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday night, they are almost certainly safe now on 40 points, and so can start planning ahead in the long-term project.

They will struggle to attract Nunez ahead of other teams with no European football to offer, but at 22 years of age, you would think that there could be another opportunity to sign him down the line, once the Tyneside outfit really start to make a name for themselves on the world stage.
