As well as Davies: 3/10 Spurs dud must be axed for the Europa League final

Tottenham Hotspur sunk to another defeat, their 20th of the season, in the Premier League when they were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace on Sunday.

A double from Eberechi Eze, who scored just before and just after the half-time break, put Spurs to the sword, and it could have been even more if not for eight saves from Antonin Kinsky between the sticks.

The Czech star was given a rare run-out in goal as he is not eligible to play in the Europa League, but the shot-stopper was not the only player who was given a rare chance to impress, as Ben Davies also came in at centre-back.

Why Ben Davies should not start the Europa League final

The Wales international came in to start in the left-sided centre-back position against Palace, after he was an unused substitute in both legs of the semi-final clash with Bodo/Glimt.

Davies won seven of his 13 duels against the Eagles, just over half, and put in a decent, but unimpressive, display at the heart of the defence. He certainly did not do enough to suggest that the manager should keep him in the team for the Europa League final after the clash with Aston Villa next weekend.

As you can see in the table above, Micky van de Ven has been far more defensively dominant than him in Europe, which is why the Dutchman should be in line to start against Manchester United.

Davies is not the only player from Sunday’s starting XI who should be ditched from the team after the Aston Villa game, though, as Djed Spence must also be binned for the final.

Why Djed Spence should not start the Europa League final

The English defender lined up at left-back against Palace and did not cover himself in glory for either of the goals with his positioning on that side of the pitch, whilst he also gave the ball away 12 times and only completed 76% of his attempted passes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Football.london handed him a player rating of just 3/10 and wrote that he was ‘all over the place’ and that Palace took ‘advantage’ of his poor positional play throughout the match, despite winning eight of his ten duels.

It is not the first time that his positioning has been questioned. When playing in his more natural right-back berth, Football FanCast suggested that he should have been dropped after the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool because he was allowed his market to get in behind on at least three occasions, once leading to a goal, on that day.

Ange Postecoglou, therefore, should not select Spence at left-back for the Europa League final because his unreliable positioning could cost them big time against the Red Devils.

Spurs will not want to gift chances away, as they did against Liverpool and Palace, with Spence at full-back because his positioning lets the United wingers in too many times down the flanks, which is why he should be dropped.

Tottenham star Djed Spence

Destiny Udogie, meanwhile, has averaged 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game and won 66% of his duels in the Europa League, whilst also offering a naturally left-footed option to progress the ball in possession down that side.

Not another Mourinho: Levy makes "genius" coach Spurs' top target

Even if Tottenham triumph in the Europa League, most expect Ange Postecoglou to be sacked, so doest Daniel Levy have a “genius” coach top of his list?

2 ByBen Gray May 10, 2025

It is now down to Postecoglou to take Spence out of the XI, whether that is for Villa next week or after the clash with the Villans, in order to play Udogie at left-back in the Europa League final.

Spurs can forget Guehi & Huijsen by unleashing "monster" 18-year-old star

To put it mildly, this season has not gone well for Tottenham Hotspur.

In fact, unless Ange Postecoglou can mastermind a European miracle over the next month or so, it looks set to be the club’s worst in several generations.

However, while the form and performance of the squad have been far from ideal, they have had to deal with an absurd number of injuries, specifically in defence.

Tottenham Hotspur's Dominic Solanke with manager AngePostecoglouafter the match

So, it’s not surprising that the North Londoners have been linked with several brilliant defenders, such as Marc Guéhi, over the last few months, although they may already have their own version of the Englishman out on loan.

Why Spurs would want Marc Guéhi

On transfer deadline day earlier this year, Spurs reportedly made a shock £70m bid for the Crystal Palace star.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

While the South Londoners turned it down due to their inability to find a replacement in time, it indicated that the Lilywhites were serious about their interest.

In fact, due to the massive sum offered to the Eagles, Spurs writer John Wenham later claimed he expects the club to return with another offer in the summer when it’ll be easier for Palace to replace him.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

It’s not hard to see why the North Londoners are so interested in the former Chelsea star either, as on top of simply providing more cover at the back, he’s also got an abundance of top-level experience.

For example, even though he’s still just 24 years old, the 6 foot monster has already racked up 212 first-team appearances across his career, with 151 of those coming for Palace, 59 with Swansea City and two with the Blues.

Moreover, he has 23 senior England caps to his name and was arguably one of the Three Lions’ top performers at the European Championships last year.

However, even if he costs less than £70m, he’s still going to cost a lot of money, which could go elsewhere if the club promotes one of their own up-and-coming talents, who also happens to be a tremendously exciting non-nonsense centre-back.

Spurs' answer to Guéhi

It’s evident that Spurs are in the market for a new centre-back this summer with links to Dean Huijsen also surfacing in recent weeks. However, they could forget about him and Guehi with the player we want to discuss here.

For those of you familiar with the Spurs youngsters out on loan, it’ll probably come as no surprise that the player in question is the incredibly promising Luka Vušković.

The Croatian wonderkid signed for the Lilywhites back in September 2023, but as he was still 16 years old at the time, post-Brexit rules meant he couldn’t yet join up with the club.

Instead, he’s spent the last year and a half on loan, with this season seeing him join Belgian outfit KVC Waterloo, where he has been sensational.

So, starting with the defensive side of his game, as that’s what matters most after all, and his statistics make for pretty reading.

For example, according to FOTmob, he sits in the top 5.7% of centre-backs in the league for aerial duels won, the top 6.9% for recoveries, the top 8% for blocks and the top 16.1% for percentage of duels won, all per 90.

However, what really makes the “freak talent,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, stand out is his attacking ability.

For example, in just 32 appearances, totalling 2743 minutes, the 6 foot 5 “monster,” as dubbed by Mattinson, has scored seven goals and provided two assists.

That means the 18-year-old is currently averaging a goal involvement every 3.55 games or every 304.77 minutes from centre-back.

Ultimately, Spurs may need a new defender this summer, but with how well Vušković is playing, they may not need to break the bank on someone like Guéhi.

Shardul Thakur on his rescue act: 'I like batting in difficult situations'

The Mumbai allrounder lifted his team from 47 for 7 and then took a wicket during an economical spell

S Sudarshanan23-Jan-2025They came to watch Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. They ended up cheering for Shardul Thakur.Around 200 spectators had gathered at the Sharad Pawar Academy in the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai, but only a little more than half had got in by the time Jaiswal and Rohit, who was playing his first Ranji Trophy game in nearly a decade, were dismissed early on Thursday morning. The home side needed at least one outright victory from their remaining two league games to qualify for the knockout round, but here they were tottering at 47 for 7 an hour and a half into the first morning against Jammu and Kashmir. It was time for Thakur’s first act: 51 off 57 balls at No. 8, and a partnership of 63 with Tanush Kotian for the ninth wicket, to drag Mumbai past 100 in tough conditions. The J&K quicks Umar Nazir Mir and Yudhvir Singh swung the ball viciously, hitting the right lines and lengths to challenge both edges of Thakur’s bat. He survived two lbw appeals in quick succession, but when a semblance of width was on offer, Thakur attacked. Thakur has fought these battles in more high-profile arenas; three of his four half-centuries in Test cricket came when India were in trouble. One of them was India’s second-fastest fifty at the time.Related

Thakur pulled Yudhvir over midwicket to move to 49 before carving to deep point to complete a 51-ball fifty. The small crowd was delighted; several employees from nearby offices stood along the railings enjoying a lunch break well spent. Thakur finally holed out to long-on – Mumbai all out for 120 – and shook his head in disappointment all the way back to his team-mates.”I like batting in difficult situations,” Thakur said after stumps. “In easy situations, everyone does well, but how you put up the show in adverse situations matters. I see tough situations as a challenge and always think about how to overcome that challenge.”Thakur wasn’t done, though, and came out for a second act. He took the new ball and had a close appeal for lbw turned down against Shubham Khajuria in the opening over. In his second over, Thakur found Khajuria’s outside edge but Shreyas Iyer failed to hold the catch diving to his right at second slip. His only wicket – Abdul Samad caught behind – was an important one as it broke a 58-run stand for the third wicketThakur helped limit J&K’s lead to 54 runs with only three wickets in hand at the end of day one. He was Mumbai’s most economical bowler, conceding 29 in 13 overs, which was a big change from his recent performances in the two domestic white-ball tournaments. In the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he was Mumbai’s most expensive bowler (also their highest wicket-taker), and he went for more than six an over in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy. And before all that, Thakur had found no buyers at the IPL auction in November and will not be part of the 2025 season.”You have to forget whatever has happened in the past; it is not going to change,” he said of those events. “It is important to be in the present and think about what you can do in the near future.”If you see the domestic T20 or one-day tournaments, most teams winning the toss won the match. Games started at 9am, there was out-and-out help for fast bowlers for 20 overs. We lost the toss against two good teams [ Karnataka and Punjab] and the pitch becomes flat after lunch. They were tracks you can hit on from ball one.”In such cases, you can’t judge bowlers. On those surfaces any top bowler get hit; take any top bowler, he will get hit. The pitches were made such that 300-350 were easily being scored, bowlers were going at an economy of six to six-and-a-half runs per over. You do not need to take those performances to heart, I think. There are ups and downs in cricket and it is important to be in the present and think about how you can do better in the near future.”The near future, for Thakur and Mumbai, is to fight back in this crucial Ranji Trophy fixture against J&K. That they aren’t out of it already is down to Thakur, and not his more high-profile team-mates.

Kyle Mayers had one shot, and he didn't let it slip

In the small window he had before Quinton de Kock’s arrival, he did everything he could to make it extremely hard for Lucknow Super Giants to drop him

Deivarayan Muthu06-Apr-20231:30

Mayers: I didn’t play last year but learnt a lot from players and coaches

Of the 671 cricketers who have played in the IPL across 16 seasons, only one has scored half-centuries in his first two innings in the league – Kyle Mayers. After his match-winning 73 off 38 balls on debut for Lucknow Super Giants against Delhi Capitals, Mayers said he had “always dreamed” of playing in the IPL.He’s had to wait to realise that dream. In 2021, Mayers had joined Rajasthan Royals as a reserve player and did the week-long hard quarantine mandated by the league’s Covid-19 protocols, only for that season to be interrupted midway by the pandemic. When the season resumed months later in the UAE, Mayers was not called upon again by Royals. In 2022, he was signed by Lucknow Super Giants at his base price of INR 50 lakh, but watched the entire season from the bench. In October that year, Mayers played an incredible shot while opening against Australia in a T20I – a lofted back-foot drive off Cameron Green that sailed 105 metres to clear the cover boundary. That astonishing display of power and balance took place in a largely empty stadium in Carrara, but Super Giants’ mentor Gautam Gambhir saw it and was gobsmacked.

Nevertheless, Mayers may have begun this IPL season on the bench as well had Quinton de Kock not been on South Africa duty for the start of it. He would have known that he had only one or two chances to stake his claim at the top of the order, before de Kock joined the squad. And he took it.Mayers followed his half-century on IPL debut with another rampaging 53 during a 200-plus chase on MS Dhoni’s home turf, making himself almost impossible to drop for Super Giants’ third game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 7.Related

Morkel sees the rise of Wood and Mayers as 'a bonus'

The Shot Heard 'Round the World

If Super Giants want to fit both de Kock and Mayers into their starting XI, then Marcus Stoinis might be the one to miss out, with Nicholas Pooran and Mark Wood filling the third and fourth overseas slots. De Kock slammed a T20I century off 44 balls on March 26, while Stoinis has scored only 33 runs and hasn’t bowled yet in his first two matches in the IPL.Mayers, on the other hand, has been bowling an over or two in the powerplay, and along with a deceptive legcutter, he can swing the ball both ways in helpful conditions. He opens the bowling regularly in the CPL and for West Indies. He had started his career as a proper swing bowler who could hit some sixes lower down the order. At the 2012 Under-19 World Cup in Australia, he was the highest wicket-taker for West Indies – and the fourth highest overall – with 12 strikes in six matches at an average of 11.83 and economy rate of 3.78. Three years later, on his first-class debut for Windward Islands, he took the new ball but bagged a duck from No. 8.Kyle Mayers is the first batter to score half-centuries in his first two IPL games•Associated PressIn 2018, an ankle injury forced him to reduce his bowling workload and remodel himself into a batting allrounder. Mayers didn’t have a CPL contract back then and after he recovered, he worked his way back by going to play cricket in Norway.Mayers is now the undisputed first-choice opener for West Indies in white-ball cricket. He torched the most recent CPL for Barbados Royals, played for Durban Super Giants in the inaugural SA20, and has now shown that he can cut it in the IPL as well. His IPL team-mate Wood, one of the fastest bowlers in the world, fears bowling to him in the nets. His West Indies team-mate and IPL opponent Rovman Powell says Mayers is a bigger hitter than him.Morne Morkel, Super Giants’ bowling coach at the IPL and the SA20 and Mayers’ former CPL team-mate at St Lucia Zouks, is particularly impressed with Mayers’ progress.”Very happy to see Kyle [perform]. It’s amazing to see him sort of move on, he’s progressed into a quality white-ball player,” Morkel said after their previous game. “Saw him in Durban [in the SA20 league] and he played these sorts of innings where upfront he really puts the bowlers under a lot of pressure.”1:08

Will Mayers have to warm the bench when de Kock is available?

Who opens if both de Kock and Mayers play?Though Mayers started his career in the lower order, he is at his best when he opens. His game is built around hitting the ball over the top and taking advantage of the field restrictions during the powerplay.Since 2022, Mayers has had a T20 strike rate of 138.05 in the powerplay; de Kock’s powerplay strike rate (138.65) during this period is almost identical. There isn’t much to separate the two as openers on recent form.De Kock, though, has the game and gears to manoeuvre the ball in the middle overs, and he is also a better player of spin than Mayers. They were team-mates during the CPL and SA20, where de Kock batted down the order to let Mayers do his thing at the top.”How we’re going to work that [selection decision] out, luckily that’s not for me to think about,” Morkel said. “But yeah, it’s fantastic to see him [Mayers] upfront, firing, and playing well and in form.”A muscled West Indian left-hander with dreadlocks, smashing the ball around in the powerplay, is a familiar sight in the IPL. Mayers has only just begun, but his nickname of “Dappa” might catch on this season, just like the the Universe Boss did all those years ago.

Talking Points: Do RCB still rely too heavily on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers?

Also, what did Devdutt Padikkal do differently today in the middle overs?

Nagraj Gollapudi28-Oct-2020Padikkal powers RCB’s intent in the middle overs

Devdutt Padikkal has been one of the most successful openers in IPL 2020 so far, and has the second-most runs in the first six overs: 244, which is just eight behind tournament’s highest scorer KL Rahul for that period. In the powerplay, Padikkal also has the highest strike rate this tournament: 133.But Padikkal’s big challenge has been to keep the tempo high in the middle overs (7-16), a segment of the innings where the Royal Challengers have struggled for momentum in general. Before this match Padikkal’s strike rate in the middle overs was 114.28. He had managed to hit just a total of just 10 boundaries in 112 deliveries in the middle overs, taking 11.2 balls per boundary.Today, though, Padikkal’s strike rate soared to 173.07 as he blasted 45 runs from 26 deliveries in the middle overs, including six fours and a six – a boundary every 3.71 deliveries. That was even more than what Mike Hesson, the Royal Challengers’ team director, had asked for while talking to the match commentators during the innings.Hesson had pointed out that his team was slowing down in the middle overs and so falling short by at least 20 runs. The Royal Challengers had the worst run rate of 7.07 in the middle overs coming into the game, way below the top two teams – Mumbai (8.50) and the Kings XI Punjab (8.45). But thanks to Padikkal, and a useful cameo from AB de Villiers, the Royal Challengers scored 80 in the middle 10 overs, their second-highest total in the period for the tournament, only two runs behind what they scored against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Sharjah.Do RCB continue to rely too heavily on Kohli and de Villiers?
Without a doubt. The Royal Challengers have turned a corner and are strong contenders to make the the playoffs this IPL. However their success continues to be dictated by the batting fortunes of their two best batsmen: de Villiers and Kohli. Every time this season the pair has failed, the Royal Challengers have lost the match.Today neither Kohli nor de Villiers were around during the death-overs phase and the Royal Challengers eventually fell well short of what they would have expected to get after all the good work done by Padikkal. In their five defeats in this tournament, including today, Kohli has managed 151 runs while de Villiers has not even totalled three digits, scoring just 93 runs. In the seven matches that the Royal Challengers have won, Kohli has scored 238 at a strike rate of 138 while de Villiers has powered 196 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 196.Suryakumar Yadav makes a statement
Suryakumar Yadav would have been intent on making a statement after being overlooked for India’s T20 squad for the upcoming Australia tour. Who better to make a statement against than the team lead by Kohli, the India captain, who is part of the selection meetings.ESPNcricinfo LtdHe swung the contest in Mumbai’s favour in a matter of six balls between overs 11.6 and 12.5. Nineteen runs came off those six deliveries, 18 of them to Yadav, and according to ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster tool Mumbai’s win percentage nearly doubled from 36.5 to 64.8 in that period. An audacious six with a high and straight elbow over extra cover against Yuzvendra Chahal was followed by a steer against a fast delivery outside off from Dale Steyn, which Yadav executed in seemingly a matter-of-fact fashion. It was as if he was making a point with his calmness and composure.Yadav has been among the best batsmen this IPL, and he has done that by dominating the opposition’s best bowlers. Tonight, he dominated Chahal with the sweep shot, and hit 25 runs from 13 deliveries against him. So far in this IPL, Yadav has the most runs overall using the sweep: 32 form 13 balls. Against RCB he also caned Steyn for 19 runs from just seven balls. He had the final word, too, hitting the winning boundary and signing off with a gesture that seemed to suggest: “I’m there, relax.”

Fullkrug & Wilson upgrade: West Ham chasing £26m CF who's 'like Harry Kane'

While their performances last year and at the start of the season suggest otherwise, West Ham United do have a talented squad.

The likes of Freddie Potts, Jarrod Bowen, Mateus Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters are all good to great players who will help move the East Londoners away from a Premier League relegation scrap as the season goes on.

However, one area of the team that the Hammers have consistently failed to address is up top, with neither Niclas Füllkrug nor Callum Wilson good enough to lead the line.

Fortunately, West Ham are now being linked with an inform number nine who could end their striker curse and was even linked to Harry Kane as a youngster.

West Ham target Füllkrug and Wilson upgrade

Before his injury, Füllkrug had made seven appearances for West Ham this season, in which he failed to score or assist a single goal, which makes news of his likely departure in January rather welcome to most fans.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Wilson, on the other hand, has been able to find the back of the net twice, in fact, but even so, he has hardly blown anyone away in his nine appearances so far this season, and with his injury record being what it is, he cannot be relied upon.

So, with all that in mind, it’s clear that the East Londoners are in desperate need of a new striker once the window opens, and fortunately, that might happen.

According to a recent report from Turkey, West Ham are among several sides interested in man of the moment, Troy Parrott.

Alongside the Hammers, the report claims that Everton, Leeds United and Stuttgart are keen on signing the Irish international from AZ Alkmaar, who want at least €30m for him, which is about £26m.

It could be a tough transfer to get over the line, but with how well Parrott has played in recent years, and how much of an upgrade on Füllkrug and Wilson he’d be, it’s one worth fighting for.

Why Parrott would be massive upgrade on Wilson & Füllkrug

It’s the obvious place to start, but it’s also the most important: Parrott would be a huge upgrade on Wilson and Füllkrug because he’s simply the better goalscorer.

For example, while the two West Ham strikers have just two goals between them this season, the Irishman has already racked up an astounding tally of 13 goals and two assists in 14 appearances, totalling 928 minutes.

That comes out to a sensational average of 1.07 goal involvements every game, or one every 61.86 minutes.

Such an incredible rate of return makes the claim of one analyst, made over five years ago, that he was “reminiscent of Harry Kane” as a youngster look rather reasonable today.

It’s not just this season that the former Tottenham Hotspur gem has been on fire, though, as he ended last season with an excellent haul of 20 goals and five assists in 47 games.

With that said, the second reason he’d be an excellent upgrade on the Hammers’ ageing forwards is that he’s still just 23 years old, and therefore has plenty left in the tank.

Moreover, while he did have some injury problems early on in his career, he has not missed more than nine games for club and country in any of the last three campaigns.

Finally, as was made quite clear over the last week or so, the Dublin-born game-changer is someone for the big occasions.

For example, he scored both goals in Ireland’s 2-0 win over Portugal, and then followed that up with what is already a legendary hat-trick against Hungary, securing the country’s place in the World Cup play-offs.

Moreover, his third goal was practically the final kick of the game, suggesting he isn’t someone to flap under the most immense of pressure.

Ultimately, while it might be difficult to get ahead of the other interested parties, West Ham should be doing all they can to sign Parrott in January, as he might be the man to end their striker curse.

Venkatesh Prasad reiterates his commitment to bringing big-ticket cricket back to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru

Sujith Somasunder, who played two ODIs in 1996 and was until recently head of education at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, is the vice-president.Prasad, who received unanimous backing from former colleagues Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath among others, defeated his rival KN Shanth Kumar by a 749-558 margin. Flanked by his team members, Prasad reiterated his commitment to work with the state government to restore “Chinnaswamy’s lost glory”.”First and foremost, this is a victory for the sport of cricket,” Prasad said. “Secondly, this is a victory for all the members who wanted a change, all the people who wanted international cricket to come back to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.”Related

Probe panel deems Chinnaswamy 'unsafe' for large-scale events

The venue hasn’t hosted a big-ticket game since a stampede outside the premises claimed 11 lives during a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory party on June 4. Since then, the KSCA has been a no-go for cricket in Bengaluru, with the BCCI preferring to host the Duleep Trophy and ‘A’ series between India and South Africa at the Centre of Excellence. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium was scheduled to host five women’s ODI World Cup games, including the final. But they had to be moved out after the previous KSCA dispensation, which was operating without a treasurer and secretary, who had resigned on moral grounds after the stampede, failed to obtain the necessary clearances from the state government.KSCA subsequently ran into trouble with the state’s electricity suppliers over fire-safety compliances, which led to power supply to the venue being cut-off. Power has since been restored after a fire-safety audit that said KSCA was in compliance with regulations.Prasad has now instructed his team to study the other possible changes they can implement by studying the findings of the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Commission, appointed by the Karnataka government in the aftermath of the stampede.DK Shivakumar casts his vote at the KSCA elections•PTI In its report in July, the commission had stated that the stadium’s “design and structure” were inherently “unsuitable and unsafe” for mass gatherings. It warned that continuing to hold high-attendance events at the venue would pose “unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility, and emergency preparedness”.On Sunday, Karnataka’s deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, a KSCA life-member and among the early voters, vowed to bring the IPL back to the Chinnaswamy.”I’m a cricket lover,” he said. We will ensure that the accident in Karnataka does not happen again and hold cricket events at Chinnaswamy Stadium in a manner that upholds the honour of Bengaluru. We will not shift the IPL elsewhere and will continue to hold it here at Chinnaswamy Stadium. This is the pride of Bengaluru and Karnataka, which we will retain.”Prasad joins a small group of former India players currently in cricket administration. Recently, Mithun Mahnas, the former Delhi captain and a cricket administrator in Jammu & Kashmir, was elected BCCI president, while Sourav Ganguly, Prasad’s former India colleague and captain, was unanimously elected as president of Cricket Association of Bengal. Saurabh Tiwary and Shahbaz Nadeem, who also had brief India careers along with a strong body of work in domestic cricket, have entered cricket administration in Jharkhand in positions of authority.

Rahul to lead in ODIs against South Africa in Gill's absence; Pant back

India batter KL Rahul will captain the side in the three ODIs against South Africa starting on November 30. Rahul steps in with regular captain Shubman Gill still recovering from the neck injury he suffered during the first Test in Kolkata earlier this month.Rishabh Pant was back in ODI mix as the second wicketkeeper, having last played the format in August 2024. Jasprit Bumrah was rested having featured in all four home Tests this season, the T20 Asia Cup as well as the ODIs in Australia over the past two months. Shreyas Iyer too wasn’t in the squad as he continues to recover from a lacerated spleen. With Shreyas unavailable, a middle-order spot opened up for Tilak Varma, the left-hand batter, who featured in a recent one-day series against South Africa A in Rajkot.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Tilak has so far played four ODIs with modest returns, but has established himself as a regular in the T20I set-up. He could compete with Pant for a spot in the middle order that also has Virat Kohli, Rahul as well as Ravindra Jadeja, who was rested for the Australia ODIs. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar are the other allrounders in the mix. There was no spot for Axar Patel. In Gill’s absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to open the batting with Rohit Sharma. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was in sparkling form for India A during the one-dayers against South Africa A is the reserve opener.

Leeds have "one of the most in-demand young STs" & he can rival Harry Gray

If Leeds United are to collect a much-needed win on their travels next up in the Premier League away at Nottingham Forest, they will need to make sure they have packed their shooting boots.

Indeed, away from scoring three at Molineux back in September, Daniel Farke’s goal-shy Whites have regularly fired blanks on the road this season, with the 3-0 defeat handed to him last time out away at Brighton and Hove Albion only seeing the West Yorkshire outfit register a weak two shots on target.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has definitely frustrated a large volume of his new supporters, already, by regularly spurning opportunities, with five big chances missed in the Premier League this season coming courtesy of the wasteful ex-Everton marksman.

With both Lukas Nmecha and Joel Piroe not exactly banging the door down to take Calvert-Lewin’s starting spot off him, either, Farke could soon be tempted to throw Harry Gray into the senior mix more regularly, as the teenage sensation continues to frighten Premier League 2 defences in West Yorkshire.

Why Harry Gray should be in the first team

Despite only being 17 years of age, Gray has already received some first-team chances here and there, to begin to live up to his well-known family name, which has also seen Archie Gray go on to be a £40m sale to Tottenham Hotspur.

Leeds will hope they can hold on to the blistering number 45 for far longer than they managed with his Premier League-bound brother, though, with Gray perhaps the long-term fix to all their goalscoring woes.

From only 25 games lining up for both the U18s and U21s, Gray has a ridiculous 15 goals next to his name, leading to the England U17 international already being dubbed as “one of England’s best young prospects” by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Of course, he does still have a very long way to go before he’s smashing goals home in the senior picture, with only one senior match under his belt to date.

But, do not be surprised if he’s handed more first-team chances very soon, having also recently penned a new long-term deal to stay put at his boyhood club, particularly if Calvert-Lewin continues to fluff his lines.

Amazingly, Gray isn’t the only goal machine being worked on at Thorp Arch at the moment, as another raw version of the 17-year-old is being brewed behind the scenes to excite Farke.

18-year-old Leeds star can rival Harry Gray

Leeds always seem to have a future talent ready on their conveyor belt, with the likes of Kalvin Phillips also homegrown, before he moved on to Manchester City.

The next starlet set for a big break at Elland Road could well be Lewis Pirie, with the 18-year-old situated in West Yorkshire ever since leaving former boyhood employers Aberdeen behind in 2023 for £200k, which is a wild fee to fork out for a rising star, especially one that was just 16 years of age at the time.

But, much like Gray, Pirie has been turning heads since a very tender age with his unbelievable goalscoring prowess to demand such an investment, with an insane 51 goals managed for club and country during the 2022/23 season, even seeing journalist James Marshment label the Scotsman as “one of the most in-demand young strikers around” when a move was clinched.

He has since slotted into the Leeds academy scene well, too, with his goalscoring promise for the U18s backing up his previous manager Jim Goodwin’s comments that he is a very “exciting” prospect.

Already, the five-time Scotland U17 international has fired home seven goals on the youth pitches in West Yorkshire, with three of those seven efforts coming during his first five breakneck outings for the U18s.

He is yet to get off the mark for the U21s, from just four appearances, but his continued rise up the ranks does bear similarities to Gray’s goal-laden ascent.

All this fresh blood excelling in attack away from the senior set-up will surely worry Calvert-Lewin when it comes to his long-term security, as the 28-year-old prays a purple patch comes his way soon, starting with a decisive strike against Forest on Saturday.

"Highly-rated" Leeds gem could now leave "on a free transfer in January"

Leeds United’s rising young goalkeeper could depart the club within the coming months.
