A Saka & Madueke hybrid: £70m "monster" wants to sign for Arsenal in 2026

For a long time, one of Arsenal’s most significant problems was finding a proper backup for Bukayo Saka.

The Hale End icon is undoubtedly Mikel Arteta’s best player, and his time on the sidelines last season showed just how much the team were in desperate need of someone who could cover and compete with him on the right.

Fortunately, the North Londoners signed Noni Madueke in the summer, and while his arrival wasn’t met with universal excitement, his performances over the first five Premier League games suggested he may well be the player the club have needed for so long.

Therefore, supporters should be excited about recent reports linking Arsenal to an international ace who has been compared to both Saka and Madueke.

Arsenal target Saka & Madueke hybrid

It’s not even December, but Arsenal are already being linked with a host of exciting players across Europe and beyond.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, Levante’s Etta Eyong, who has already racked up nine goal involvements, has been touted for a move to the Emirates, as has Nottingham Forest’s incredible Elliot Anderson.

However, as talented as they are, neither of them could be described as being a hybrid of Saka and Madueke, unlike Karim Adeyemi.

Yes, according to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Arsenal are one of a few top sides interested in signing the Borussia Dortmund star.

More than that, the report has revealed that while the German international’s representatives have spoken to Manchester United, he would favour a move to the Gunners.

A potential price is not mentioned in the story, but other reports from Germany claim that Dortmund value their attacker at around £70m.

It could be a complicated and costly deal to get over the line, but given Adeyemi’s ability and potential, one worth pursuing, especially as he’s been compared to both Saka and Madueke.

How Adeyemi compares to Saka & Madueke

Even though it feels like it has been around for some time now, Adeyemi is still just 23 years old.

The Munich-born “monster,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has been a key player for Dortmund for a few years, ending last season with an excellent tally of 12 goals and 11 assists in just 41 appearances.

He appears on track to match that tally this year as well, as in 14 appearances, totalling just 817 minutes, he has already racked up six goal involvements.

However, while his output is seriously impressive, the comparisons to Saka and Madueke primarily come from elsewhere, from FBref.

They have compared him to every attacking midfielder and winger across Europe’s top five leagues and have determined that the Hale Enders is the second most similar, and the former Chelsea star is the fourth.

You can gain a better understanding of how these comparisons were made by examining the underlying numbers in which the German dynamo has ranked closely to the two internationals.

In the case of the Gunners’ talisman, these metrics include expected goals plus assists, progressive passes, shot-creating actions, shots on target, and more, all per 90.

Then, for the former Blues star, the underlying numbers include metrics such as goal-creating actions, expected assists, and most interestingly, carries, also all per 90.

In other words, the former RB Salzburg gem seems to possess some of the creativity and goal threat of the North Londoners’ number seven, as well as the carrying ability of their summer signing, which helps explain why Mattinson called him a “serious transitional threat.”

Ultimately, it would be a costly and challenging transfer to get over the line, but given Adeyemi’s skillset, positional versatility and output, it is one Arsenal should pursue.

Brett D'Oliveira 138 leads Worcestershire home in tall chase

Worcestershire 316 for 6 (D’Oliveira 138, Libby 69) beat Derby 315 (Jewell 113, Montgomery 92) by four wicketsBrett D’Oliveira’s List A best 138 led Worcestershire Rapids to a four-wicket victory over Derbyshire Falcons in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup Group A match at Repton School.Rapids skipper Jake Libby made 69 before 19-year-old Dan Lategan scored an unbeaten 42 off 39 balls on his first-team debut to take the Rapids to their target of 316 with 11 balls to spare.Caleb Jewell made 113 off 107 balls and Matt Montgomery 92 before the Falcons lost their last five wickets for 25 to be bowled out for 315. The Rapids were in trouble at 11 for 2 but D’Oliveira and Libby revived them before Lategan saw them over the line. There was a sell-out crowd as first team cricket returned to Repton School for the first time since 1988 and the Falcons made a solid start after they were put in.Jewell and Harry Came took the score to 46 before Came pulled Kurram Shahzad into the hands of leg slip. But that was the Rapids last success for 24 overs as Jewell and Montgomery took full advantage of a good batting pitch. After reaching 50 from 57 balls, Jewell pulled Ben Allison for six and swept D’Oliveira for another maximum with 15 coming from his first over. Jewell surged towards his century, which came off 96 balls, by driving and sweeping D’Oliveira for two more fours before pulling Ethan Brookes over the ropes.Montgomery drove Brookes down the ground for four to go to his first 50 for the Falcons and the stand was worth 150 when Jewell skied a cut at Brookes into the covers.Brooke Guest missed a cut at Fateh Singh and the left-arm spinner ended Montomery’s fine innings by having him caught behind.Amrit Basra drove Allison to mid-on and the Falcons hopes of a total above 350 crumbled as the last five wickets fell in six overs. After Martin Andersson was lbw to Singh, Allison had Ross Whiteley caught at short midwicket and bowled Zak Chappell before Shahzad cleaned up.Even so, a target of 316 was a challenging one and it looked even tougher when the Rapids lost two wickets in the first four overs. Isaac Mohammed was dropped at second slip without a run on the board but failed to take advantage, slicing Ben Aitchison to third man.Rory Haydon beat Kashif Ali’s drive but D’Oliveira and Libby regrouped before asserting themselves on the bowlers.D’Oliveira cut and drove Haydon for sixes on his way to a run a ball 50 and with Libby easing the ball into the gaps, the momentum swung towards the Rapids.D’Oliveira took three fours from a Chappell over as he accelerated to an 84 ball hundred but Haydon returned to give the game another twist. He bowled Libby to end a stand of 183 in 28 overs and then deceived Brookes who chipped to short midwicket.Lategan pulled Haydon for six and with 67 needed from the last 10 overs, drove Jack Morley for another maximum. When he went for a repeat, Aitchison took the catch at long-on only to step on the rope but Morley hit back by bowling D’Oliveira.Henry Cullen sliced to cover but Lategan showed nerve and skill to settle an absorbing contest.

Mulder makes 367*, the fifth-highest individual Test score of all time

But stand-in South Africa captain declines chance to overtake Lara’s world record by declaring

Wiaan Mulder hit 49 fours and four sixes in his 367*•Zimbabwe Cricket

Wiaan Mulder, captaining South Africa for the first time in only his 21st Test, posted the fifth-highest individual Test score by blasting an unbeaten 367 off 334 balls in Bulawayo against Zimbabwe. But Mulder, only 33 runs away from Brian Lara’s 21-year world-record score of 400*, from St John’s in 2004, declared at lunch with South Africa on 626 for 5 on the second day.Along the way, Mulder also became the 29th Test cricketer and only the second South African – after Hashim Amla (311 not out) in 2012 – to score a triple-century. Ending day one at 264 not out, Mulder brought up his triple century off 297 balls in the first hour of the second day, the second-fastest after Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball effort (vs South Africa in 2008).From there, Mulder scored his next 67 runs in only 37 balls in No. 7 Kyle Verreynne’s company. Once Mulder went past Len Hutton’s 364 and Garfield Sobers’ 365 not out before lunch, he was in the top five with only Mahela Jayawardene (374), Lara (375), Matthew Hayden (380) and Lara (400 not out) ahead of him.Mulder’s runs came at breakneck speed and comprised 49 fours and four sixes. His innings strike rate of 109.88 is now the best among all triple-centurions. He is also the first South African captain to score a Test triple-century as he is standing in for the injured Keshav Maharaj.

Imagine him & Magassa: West Ham can unleash 20-year-old who's "like Diame"

They might be in the relegation zone and have a single win from their last five Premier League games, but the future could be bright for West Ham United.

Granted, things off the pitch and the relationship between the ownership and fans are in a dire state, but with Nuno Espírito Santo now in the dugout, there is a feeling that he could steer the side to a respectable finish this season.

Moreover, while they have not performed well enough, there is real talent in this squad, with summer signing Soungoutou Magassa being someone who could explode with the right coaching.

On top of that, there are several truly exciting players in the academy, including one who could be unreal with the Frenchman and has been compared to former Hammer Mohamed Diamé.

Why West Ham signed Magassa

In late August, West Ham completed the £17.3m signing of Magassa, and while it was undoubtedly done with the intention of him making an impact this season, it also feels like a move that could help make the midfield so much better in the long term.

The simple reason for this is that the incredible Frenchman is brilliant when it comes to the defensive and offensive side of the game – he is someone who can shield the backline, but also spring attacks for his side.

For example, the respected analyst Ben Mattinson has claimed that the Stains-born gem has an immense ability to “spray passes wide out to the wings” but that he’s also got very “high potential” for playing as a six “due to how he reads the game and his pure athleticism.”

Likewise, U23 scout Antonio Mango has highlighted how “strong in both offensive and defensive duels” the youngster is.

This ability to excel in both parts of the game is unsurprisingly represented in his underlying numbers.

According to FBref, he ranks in the top 2% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for dribblers tackled and blocks, the top 3% for ball recoveries, the top 8% for switches, the top 11% for through balls and more, all per 90.

In short, Magassa is an excellent prospect, and in more good news, West Ham could have another gem who’d be brilliant alongside him, someone who has been compared to Diame.

West Ham's ideal teammate for Magassa

There are several exciting prospects currently plying their trade in West Ham’s academy, from Josh Landers to Preston Fearon.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

However, only one youngster has been compared to former Hammer Diame, which is Mohamadou Kanté.

The promising Frenchman joined the club from Paris FC last summer, but remained in the French capital for the season, where he made eight appearances in what turned out to be a promotion-winning campaign.

Described as having “good anticipation” and being “very calm and composed on the ball” by one analyst, another has been bolder, claiming he “moves like Mo Diame.”

The argument behind such a comparison is that, like the retired midfielder, the youngster has “long-ranging legs that eat up ground & extend to win the ball off the toes of the opposition.”

However, he’s more than just a tenacious ball-winner, with the same analyst highlighting his “nibble feet & intelligent, composed passing.”

It’s the combination of all these traits that have seen him rack up an impressive tally of two goals and two assists in just eight appearances for the U21s so far this season.

Moreover, as he’s comfortable playing in central and defensive midfield, he could end up being a brilliant partner for Magassa, with one driving forward and the other sitting back to help the defence.

Ultimately, it’s still early in his West Ham career, but Kante looks to be a real star in the making.

Walter, Elgar put Surrey on back foot with epic 188-run stand

Nathan Smith claims late wickets after champions are made to toil

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay24-May-2025

Paul Walter has been a revelation since moving up to open the batting•Getty Images

A superb opening stand of 188 between Paul Walter and Dean Elgar stunned champions Surrey at the Kia Oval after they had looked to be in control of the Rothesay County Championship fixture.Walter was the main aggressor, hitting 19 fours in his 118, and former South Africa opener Elgar, though never comfortable at the crease, simply used all his experience to scrap his way his 60 not out from159 balls.By stumps, Essex were 195 for two in their second innings – 133 runs in front – with Nathan Smith removing both Walter and nightwatchman Simon Harmer, for a duck, in the closing overs.Surrey had themselves been rallied earlier on an absorbing second day by Sam Curran’s classy 70 and Jordan Clark’s 54 in an eighth wicket stand of 82 in 14 overs. That partnership not only rescued Surrey from the depths of 144 for seven, in reply to Essex’s first innings 217, but was also instrumental in earning them an eventual half-way lead of 62.Walter and Elgar’s subsequent heroics, however, leaves the match intriguingly poised with two days left. Walter, 31 next week, looked surprised when he was given out caught behind slashing at a widish ball from Smith but his fourth first-class hundred was a wonderful effort.Elgar, by contrast, remained unbeaten despite several close calls. On 33, just after tea, he edged Smith clean between first and second slips for four to bring up Essex’s 100. Neither fielder moved, while later in the final session Elgar survived two impassioned appeals for caught behind and also edged Curran just short of second slip.Kasun Rajitha, the Sri Lankan Test seamer, was another Essex second day hero, taking five for 87, his best figures of the season so far, but it was the batting of Walter and Elgar that has perhaps tilted this game back towards the visitors.Using all six of their frontline pace bowlers, Surrey tried everything to break the Walter-Elgar partnership – and Dan Worrall in particular bowled without luck in an excellent eight-over spell immediately after tea – but the two left-handers stood firm until Smith broke through in the 50th over of the innings. The day began with Surrey, on 94 for three overnight, slumping to 144 for seven before Curran and Clark pulled the innings around with a stand of increasing authority. And, when Curran pulled once too often at Rajitha – the legside field featuring both an inner and outer ring, placed there specifically to punish any miscued stroke – Smith arrived to help Clark make sure of a batting bonus point.Brought on for only his third over, strangely late in the innings at 250 for eight, off spinner Simon Harmer soon dismissed Clark for 54 when Elgar at slip did brilliantly to knock up an edged cut and complete a fine reflex catch from the rebound. And, having seen last man Worrall drive his first ball high into the pavilion for six, Harmer was also swiped over extra cover for four by the Surrey fast bowler before snaring him for 13 courtesy of a more straightforward catch at slip by Elgar.Smith, who hit one memorable off-driven four off Rajitha, batted well for his 24 not out to underline the New Zealand international’s all-rounder status.Rajitha had earlier made the initial inroads by seeing Dom Sibley edge to first slip, dismissed for a determined 41, and then pin Ben Foakes lbw for two with one that just moved enough back into the right-hander off the seam as he pushed forward.Shane Snater then defeated an ambitious whip-drive to leg by Jason Roy, who succeeded only in thin-edging the seventh ball he had faced to send his middle stump cartwheeling, while Jamie Overton also departed for a duck when edging a loose drive at the persevering Rajitha.Curran, however, pulling profitably, on-driving Jamie Porter for one magnificent four and producing a number of sweetly-timed offside strokes off both the front and back foot, moved serenely to his half-century from 64 balls.Clark, settling in quickly and scoring at a run a ball with some powerful driving punctuating an otherwise watchful defence, provided Curran with the support he needed to push Surrey up to and then beyond Essex’s first innings total.Between them, indeed, the batting efforts of Curran, Clark, Smith and Worrall had turned a precarious Surrey position into a mid-match advantage. That was soon negated by Walter and Elgar, but this game could still go either way.

Fewer touches than Alisson: Slot must boldly drop 6/10 Liverpool star

Liverpool staved off the Everton threat to maintain their perfect record in the Premier League, winning the Merseyside derby

And Everton really did threaten. Liverpool blew their city rivals out of the park in the first half, romping to a two-goal lead thanks to fine strikes from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike, but haven’t looked convincing when defending a lead this term, and Idrissa Gueye’s powerful finish set the nerves jangling.

These two were the stars of the show, and it’s curious that the latter should have started his Liverpool career on such strong footing, as he looks undroppable right now.

Liverpool haven’t been at their best so far this season by any stretch, but then they have stormed into a perfect lead at the top of the league table, and they won their Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid too.

With players like Ekitike packing a new punch to the squad, there’s plenty reason to be optimistic for the term ahead.

Hugo Ekitike's start to life at Liverpool

When Liverpool announced the initial £69m signing of Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, it looked for all the world like FSG had closed the door on an ambitious effort for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak.

But that hasn’t been the case, with the goalscoring duo united under Arne Slot’s wing at Anfield. The 25-year-old Isak is billed as the more refined and accomplished, having ripped the Premier League apart at the seams over the past several years with the Magpies and joined the club for a British record fee, but four goals and an assist for the Reds mark a rather fruitful start for Ekitike.

Isak, who completed his transfer on deadline day, made his league debut for Liverpool against Everton, coming off the bench in the second half.

Last season, he was the villain down Anfield Road after scoring the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, bagging what proved to be the most important of a 27-strike haul. Now, he is Liverpool’s.

The Swedish superstar will be expected to bring the goals in their droves this term, and Ekitike’s fast start only heightens the noise around the decision to bring both to the fold.

If the plan is to weave the duo into the same starting line-up, one would likely be required to drop onto the left flank. That would appear to be Ekitike, and should that happen, it would come at the expense of Cody Gakpo’s berth, with the Dutchman playing out a quiet game against the Toffees.

Why Slot should drop Cody Gakpo

Gakpo has impressed throughout the opening weeks of the campaign, invariably placed on the left wing and posting a goal and two assists across his first two Premier League outings of the campaign.

However, the well of potency has since dried up, and he toiled somewhat against the resilient Jake O’Brien, albeit winning the ball back in the build-up to Gravenberch’s opening goal.

FFC’s 6/10 match rating for Gakpo was determined after an assessment of what was an indifferent display, but one which also demonstrated the deeper tenacity of his skillset, with data platform Sofascore revealing he won four duels, made three clearances and created two passes across his hour on the field.

Curiously, Gakpo also looked to cut inside when Ekitike drifted wide. The 26-year-old shimmies inside with regularity anyway, but you can’t help but wonder if this is a tactical tweak on Slot’s part.

There were indeed a series of sequences which saw Gakpo and Ekitike move interchangeably. These movements were performed with practised coordination, and that makes a comment on Slot’s orders as Isak warms to life on Merseyside.

Might it be a system in the works to accommodate both Isak and Ekitike in the same starting line-up? The Frenchman’s vast ground-covering display certainly suggests that this could be so, with former goalkeeper Ben Foster remarking during the contest that he “looks like prime Fernando Torres”, so complete and deadly did he look in the final third and around it.

Gakpo, conversely, was quiet, with his 41 touches across the match the fewest of any Liverpool forward starting from the opening whistle. This actually put him behind the shot-stopping Alisson Becker for touches on the afternoon, who might have conceded but didn’t actually have all that much to do, making only one save besides and two punches to deal with aerial threats.

Given that Gakpo has been a fixed feature in the starting XI for Liverpool so far this season, and has perhaps petered out after an electric start, it might be time for Slot to make a change, having already shown a newfound willingness this term to enforce rotation as he hasn’t before, sticking with the same bunch for most of the title-winning 2024/25 campaign.

While a midweek clash against Championship side Southampton, struggling after their relegation from the Premier League, will see the boss ring wholesale changes, there’s a chance next weekend against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park for Ekitike and Isak to be unleashed in a partnership, thus pushing Gakpo to the bench.

This, if anything, is a glowing testament to Liverpool’s strength in depth. And Gakpo, should he be dropped, will pop up with pivotal moments over the year.

Slot may be brewing a bigger talent than Isak in "special” Liverpool teen

Fewer touches than Vicario: Spurs must drop 5/10 star alongside Richarlison

Tottenham Hotspur kick-started their Champions League 2025/26 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over LaLiga outfit Villarreal in North London last night.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from Thomas Frank’s men, but it was a performance that got the job done and secured all three points in their opening encounter.

The Lilywhites will need to produce better displays going forward if they are to secure automatic qualification to the knockout stages of the competition.

There’s no doubt the Dane will ensure the side don’t replicate such a display, especially when the side travel to face Bodo Glimt in their next European outing at the end of the month.

However, if the side is to produce a better display in Norway, the manager will need to drop one player after his dismal showing against Marcelino Garcia’s men.

Why Richarlison needs to be dropped by Frank

While Richarlison has been a live wire for Spurs this campaign, netting two goals to date, his showing against Villarreal was arguably one of his worst in the new season.

The Brazilian was handed the responsibility of leading the line once again, but failed to produce a performance highlighting the trust put into him by boss Frank.

He only registered 23 touches during his 77-minute performance, completing just three passes in the process – subsequently failing to maintain possession for the Lilywhites.

The 28-year-old also failed to complete any of his attempted dribbles and failed to register a single effort on goal, further showcasing his lack of positive impact in the final third.

Richarlison’s dismal outing didn’t stop there, even picking up a yellow card for a late challenge on Juan Foyth – showing glimpses of his rash past, which has led to questions previously being asked about his attitude.

There’s no denying that the manager should drop him from his next starting eleven, but he shouldn’t be alone in being excluded after his recent showing in the Champions League.

The Spurs star who should be dropped alongside Richarlison

The start to the Frank reign at Spurs has been a positive one, with his side winning four of the first five competitive games he’s taken charge of in 2024/25.

Wins against Manchester City, Burnley and West Ham United were certainly more convincing, but the same can’t be said for the showing against the Spanish outfit last night.

The three points will be the most important aspect, but the manager will no doubt be concerned about his team’s lack of talent during the 1-0 triumph on home soil.

Richarlison was just one player who failed to deliver, but Djed Spence also fell into such a category despite his own recent rise to stardom in North London.

The full-back has started every game of Frank’s tenure, subsequently leading to the 25-year-old claiming his maiden England call-up during the recent international break.

However, his recent success is credit to the player, but his outing against Villarreal showed glimpses of arrogance – resulting in a debut Champions League performance to forget.

Spence featured for 69 minutes against the Spanish outfit, winning just one tackle and failing to make a single interception – falling way below the standards he’s set for himself.

He also lost possession nine times, misplacing six of his attempted passes, even registering just 52 touches of the ball – a tally fewer than that of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who managed 55.

As a result of his showing, Spence was handed a measly 5/10 match rating by Football London journalist Alasdair Gold – further highlighting his struggles in Europe’s biggest competition.

Such a showing will cast doubt over his position in the first-team squad, which could see Destiny Udogie handed a rare start in the Premier League this weekend.

The Englishman and Richarlison certainly endured evenings to forget last night, with Frank needing to try alternative solutions if he is to maintain the excellent start to life in the role.
