Jose Mourinho not interested in staying at Benfica and has his eye on Portugal national team job, says presidential candidate

Ahead of Benfica's presidential election, candidate Joao Diogo Manteigas claims Jose Mourinho, the club’s current manager, “is not a coach with a future” at the Lisbon side and already has his eyes set on managing the Portuguese national team. While acknowledging Mourinho’s winning mentality, Manteigas believes the veteran tactician’s ambitions go beyond Benfica.

Mourinho’s short-term stint at Benfica raises questions

The return of Mourinho to Benfica, 25 years after his brief debut stint, was seen as a monumental reunion between the club and one of Portugal’s greatest football minds. Appointed to replace Bruno Lage just over a month ago, Mourinho signed a two-year deal and immediately brought structure and belief back to the dressing room. But according to presidential candidate Manteigas, the 62-year-old coach’s heart might already be set elsewhere.

Manteigas described Mourinho as a “winner capable of making Benfica champions this year,” but one who lacks long-term commitment to the club. “He’s not a coach with a future here,” Manteigas told Portuguese media, suggesting the veteran tactician is eyeing the Portugal national team job, a role he has long been linked with. “Everyone in football knows Mourinho wants to be the national team coach,” he added.

AdvertisementGettyManteigas on Mourinho’s motives

As the presidential race intensifies at Benfica, Manteigas offered a candid take on Mourinho’s appointment. While acknowledging the manager’s pedigree and winning mentality, Manteigas made it clear that he believes the Portuguese's stay at the club will be short-lived.

"Mourinho is a winning coach. If there's anyone capable of making Benfica champions this year, it's José Mourinho. He's such an experienced and successful coach that he'll be able to overcome obstacles faster than any other coach we'd want to bring into a project that isn't his," said Manteigas.

"Mourinho isn't going to stay at Benfica for two, three, or four years. Who doesn't know that Mourinho wants to be the national team coach? Who doesn't know in the industry? The other candidates may not know, but those who work in the industry, who doesn't know that Mourinho spoke with Pedro Proença to discuss a possible appointment to the national team?"

Why Mourinho’s future could lie with Portugal

The speculation around Mourinho’s ambitions isn’t new. Even during his unveiling at Benfica, the manager admitted he always believed his return to Portugal would come through the national team rather than a club job. “I always thought I’d come back to the national team. I was thinking one day it will happen. I think it’s a natural consequence of my career,” Mourinho said after Benfica’s 3–0 victory over AVS in his first game back.

Manteigas’s claim aligns with these comments, noting Mourinho’s contractual clause allowing either party to terminate the deal after this season with compensation. With Roberto Martínez’s future dependent on Portugal’s World Cup performance, Mourinho could be positioning himself for the next chapter.

"If Mourinho had been interested in staying, he wouldn't have signed for one season, with this one-year clause, depending on whether one of the parties wants it or not. All contracts have timings. Therefore, I'm going to sit down with him and find out his terms, but I'll give him everything he needs to win this year," Manteigas said.

AFPElection heat intensifies at Benfica

Mourinho’s uncertain future adds another layer of intrigue to Benfica’s already charged presidential race, scheduled for October 25. The contest pits incumbent Rui Costa, the current president and the man who brought Mourinho back, against former challenger Joao Noronha Lopes, ex-president Luis Filipe Vieira, and candidates like Manteigas, Martim Mayer, and Cristovao Carvalho.

Costa is running on a platform of stability and continuity, using Mourinho’s appointment as proof of progress, while Lopes promotes modernisation and fan engagement. Manteigas, however, is positioning himself as the candidate of honesty, arguing that Benfica must plan beyond Mourinho’s short-term stay and prepare for sustainable growth.

Lockie Ferguson hobbles off two balls into his spell

This is the third time since November 2024 that Ferguson has suffered an injury

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Apr-2025Punjab Kings (PBKS) fast bowler Lockie Ferguson picked up an injury two balls into his spell in the IPL 2025 game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday.Ferguson pulled up after the second delivery of the sixth over and was seen holding the side of his left leg just below the hip. He had to leave the field after consultation with the physio and did not return to bowl again as SRH pulled off the second-highest successful chase in IPL history with eight wickets in hand.In Ferguson’s absence, Marcus Stoinis completed the sixth over but did not bowl again for the remainder of the SRH chase. PBKS used eight bowlers in total, including the medium pace of Shashank Singh, who was bowling for the first time this season.”He’s someone who can get you wickets… as he’s done in the previous matches, that was a big blow for us,” PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer said of Ferguson after the match. “But it happens. He’s someone who clicks 140-plus all the time. It’s part and parcel of a bowler’s life.”Ferguson had only just recovered from a hamstring injury that he picked up in the ILT20 in the UAE, which forced him to miss the Champions Trophy in February. This is the third time since November 2024 that Ferguson has been injured. Before his hamstring issue in the ILT20, he had also suffered a calf injury, which forced him to miss the ODIs against Sri Lanka late last year. With PBKS having made an Impact Player substitution already in the game – fast bowler Yash Thakur came in for batter Priyansh Arya – they were left a fast bowler short in their defence of 245. Ferguson is one of only two overseas fast bowlers in the PBKS squad this season, the other being Australia’s Xavier Bartlett. Before this game, Ferguson had taken five wickets in three innings while maintaining an economy of 9.36 and a strike rate of 13.20.

Patterson suffers nasty injury; Strikers hold on as Sixers collapse

Bridget Patterson was involved in a nasty incident while wicketkeeping during Adelaide Strikers’ victory over Sydney Sixers at North Sydney Oval where Amanda-Jade Wellington produced a key all-round display. In the fourth over of Sixers’ chase Patterson took a ball in the face from a 119kph delivery by Darcie Brown which pitched in front of her and kicked up, striking near the right eye. Patterson stayed on the ground with a physio and doctor quickly onto the field and after a few minutes was able to walk off. She remained at the venue for remainder of the game and will be further assessed in the coming days.”It was a nasty injury,” Strikers coach Luke Williams said after the match. “Obviously we were all worried about her, but it looks like she’s escaped major injury. It certainly was nasty at the time with the cut.”Patterson had earlier played a key role with the bat as Strikers’ middle-order produced a powerful counterattack to enable the visitors to claim the first win of their title defence. In reply, Ellyse Perry dominated the early stages of the chase with a 26-ball fifty then Sarah Bryce impressed again with 62 off 44 balls but when she fell to Megan Schutt the innings faded swiftly in a collapse of 6 for 18. Legspinners Wellington and Anesu Mushangwe were superb in the closing overs with the former comfortably defending 14 off the last.Patterson, Wellington and Orla Prendergast combined to make 123 between them off 92 balls with 32 runs coming off the two power surge overs. Wellington, inparticular, cut loose inside the restrictions with two sixes and three fours off Ash Gardner and Lauren Cheatle to finish with 40 off 16.Those contributions enabled Strikers to recover from 51 for 4 in the seventh over after Cheatle had made early inroads before Perry held onto a stinging return catch – with a juggle – to claim Laura Wolvaardt.Perry and Bryce added 80 in 50 balls for the second wicket with Perry lacing 11 boundaries although she was dropped at long-on on 17. The impressive, and quick, Brown removed Perry when she top-edged a short ball to fine leg and Sixers suffered another huge blow when Gardner fell for a five-ball duck. But Bryce and 19-year-old Elsa Hunter, on her WBBL debut, put on 53 off 35 balls to bring the target in sight aided by some poor catching from Strikers but they couldn’t finish the job for a Sixers side stretched to the limits by injury.

Nottingham Forest negotiating fee for £139k-a-week star with personal terms agreed

Nottingham Forest are planning to bring in more fresh faces at the City Ground and could now be at an advantage in their pursuit of a renowned midfielder with Premier League experience.

Nottingham Forest look to press ahead after Dan Ndoye capture

Last week, Nottingham Forest’s capture of Dan Ndoye became the latest part of an excellent few days for the club after Morgan Gibbs-White’s contract renewal, signalling Evangelos Marinakis’ ambition to push the East Midlands club in the right direction.

Speaking on the Shut Up and Show More Football podcast, BBC Nottingham’s Colin Fray believes Ndoye will bring ‘bags of pace’ to the Tricky Trees after Anthony Elanga’s departure.

Switzerland'sDanNdoyein action with Northern Ireland's Trai Hume

He stated: “I think this was their big target in terms of replacing Elanga. When he left, there really is no substitution for pace, especially when he’s got end product with it, but Dan Ndoye has bags and bags of pace as well so it does seem to be a direct replacement.

“(I’m) excited to see him, a big signing for Forest and one they were desperate to get over the line, and I don’t think it will be the last, I think they’ll be busy between now and the end of the transfer window.”

With Nuno Espirito Santo set to remain busy, contact has been made by Nottingham Forest to sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus. Labelled “underrated” by Paul Merson during his stint with Aston Villa, the Brazil international is aiming to put a frustrating year at the Old Lady behind him by seeking a swift exit.

Inter Milan star Mehdi Taremi could also move to the City Ground as irons in the fire continue to burn, and there could now be a definitive sign of who their next arrival could be over the next few weeks.

Douglas Luiz expected to complete Nottingham Forest move

According to reports in Italy via Sport Witness, there is an ‘expectation’ Juventus midfielder Luiz will sign for Nottingham Forest despite a difference in the formula both clubs want to initiate to seal a deal.

Personal terms have already been agreed on a five-year contract worth £2.18 million a year, though the Turin outfit want an obligation for the Tricky Trees to buy the Brazilian for £34.8 million, while Forest are set on a loan deal with a purchase option.

Still, Nottingham Forest want to pay just over £26 million in the event of a permanent transfer for the man in question, signifying that there is a gap in valuation that needs to be resolved. Luiz currently earns around £139,000 per week at Juventus.

Reports state there is an ‘expectation’ the proposed deal will eventually go through due to Juventus needing funds to bankroll their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

Complications are still at play and work is to be done before everything is tied up. Now, it remains to be seen if Nottingham Forest can come to a club-to-club agreement on a purchase fee.

Farke's next Rutter: Leeds still chasing move for "incredible" £26m star

Leeds United only have two more friendly fixtures left for this summer before the Premier League season finally kicks off.

The remaining matches on the schedule will test Daniel Farke’s Whites ahead of their journey up to the top flight, as Villarreal travel to Elland Road at the start of August, before a trip to Ireland takes place for the West Yorkshire side’s clash with AC Milan.

Anton Stach will hope he’s given his first runout in Leeds white against the visitors from Spain, having just signed on the dotted line for £17.4m.

He is unlikely to be the final signing of Leeds’ action-packed summer, however, as plenty more signings are tipped to join Farke’s camp before Everton come to town next month.

Leeds still chasing £26m attacker

Sunderland have eclipsed Leeds’ spending when considering the business conducted by the promoted clubs, with the Black Cats splashing out £30m on just one player when snapping up Habib Diarra.

The Whites could blow their spending out of the water if they’re willing to fork out a crazy £50m to land Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz, with that high amount being the wild price tag above the Brazilian’s head courtesy of the Cottagers.

Fulham's RodrigoMunizcelebrates scoring their third goal

There also appears to be a deal now wrapped up for Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri to join the club, but the newly promoted side isn’t just looking at Muniz in isolation when it comes to some statement deals in attack.

Indeed, reports seem to suggest that Leeds are still very much chasing after long-term target Igor Paixao, with an update from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph indicating that Farke and Co. are “closely monitoring” the unfolding situation with the Feyenoord winger.

At one stage, it looked like a formality that Marseille were going to wrap up a £26m deal for the entertaining forward. However, that deal has gone cold, meaning the Whites have returned to the dramatic race.

Leeds have been here before when splashing the cash on a thrilling addition from Europe, with Farke full of hope surely that Paixao can be his next iteration of Georginio Rutter if a move finally gets over the line.

Why Paixao can become Farke's next Rutter

Rutter would join the building for a mammoth £35.5m in January of 2023, and minus a rocky start at Leeds as they were relegated down to the Championship, the Frenchman was a firm fan’s favourite for the majority of his electric Elland Road stay.

Indeed, the 2023/24 campaign would see Rutter consistently dazzle EFL defences under Farke’s wing, culminating in him registering a mind-blowing seven goals and 16 assists across the span of the ultimately disappointing campaign, as Leeds failed to immediately break back into the Premier League.

Rutter’s whirlwind journey in West Yorkshire would then come to an abrupt end here as he moved onto the Premier League anyway with Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Whites shouldn’t hold the same concerns that Paixao will look to jump ship so soon into his stint, however, with the Brazilian looking readymade to cause a storm in the testing division after Farke and Co. clinched promotion, if his Eredivisie heroics are anything to go by.

The direct, “explosive” nature of the £26m attacker – as he’s been labelled by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – was on full display last campaign in the Netherlands, as seen in his colossal tally of 16 goals and ten assists in league action, which eclipses the total amassed by Rutter during the 2023/24 season by three goal contributions.

The agile 5-foot-6 winger should hopefully be able to slot into the Leeds set-up and be equally as devastating, having also been hailed as “incredible” by his Feyenoord manager Robin Van Persie, who definitely knows a thing or two about exciting forward players.

Georginio Rutter – timeless stats

A handful of a player, like Rutter, Paixao is particularly adept at making his presence felt in the final third, having ranked in the top 12% of Eredivisie wingers for touches in the attacking penalty area last season, at an average of 5.48 per 90, as per FBref. Rutter, for context, averaged a similar figure of 5.49 in the Championship in 2023/24.

Both a goalscorer and creator, like the Frenchman, the Feyenoord sensation also mirrors his attacking counterpart in being able to operate in a variety of attacking roles, be it off his favoured left flank or in a central berth.

Feyenoord's IgorPaixaoshoots at goal

Paixao will also already be aware of the hallowed ground of Elland Road and the impact stars like him can have on the adoring masses, with the 25-year-old once sourcing Raphinha as a direct source of inspiration as his career unwinds.

He could even boldly attempt to replicate Raphinha’s success story in West Yorkshire in being another sparkling gem that enables Leeds to stay afloat in the top-flight, as the excitement levels continue to build ahead of the Premier League campaign starting.
