Luhukay clearly knows his future is uncertain with Sheffield Wednesday

According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has spoken about his future at the club ahead of the visit by Bolton tomorrow.

The Owls lost to Derby at the weekend, despite looking largely impressive throughout the game, which now means that the Yorkshire club are without a win in their past six matches, including five losses.

Speaking in his team’s press conference, the Dutchman said:

“When results aren’t positive the managers are always in the spotlight.

“I only focus on the game tomorrow.

“Everything after that is not important.”

This is a clear suggestion that the manager is aware of his situation at the club, and he may well know that he does not have long to win over the board. The Owls now only sit three points above the relegation zone in the Championship, and a loss to Bolton tomorrow could well see The Wanderers (currently in 22nd place) leapfrog Luhukay’s men. Things would then start to look very ominous.

After the hugely encouraging draw in the Steel City Derby before the international break, Luhukay will not want his team to slip back into their rut. The draw at Bramall Lane surely bought the manager more time, as he looked almost certain to be fired had The Owls lost. But the question remains as to how long Luhukay has to turn his team’s fortunes around, and a loss to Bolton may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

This is a winnable game, and Luhukay knows that, but given Wednesday’s recent form, that does not mean it is guaranteed.

HYS: Is Pablo Zabaleta the solution to West Ham’s DM issues?

West Ham United’s disastrous start to the 2018/19 Premier League season continued as they suffered their fourth successive defeat following a 1-0 loss at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Hopes were high following a big summer of spending and the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini that the east London outfit would be in for a successful season, but it certainly hasn’t got off to a good start.

The Irons looked set to at least pick up their first point of the campaign against Wolves in the capital, but Adama Traore’s injury-time goal put paid to that, and with a trip to a Everton followed by the visit of Chelsea and Manchester United to come, they may well be in big trouble by the end of September and preparing for a relegation battle.

One of the Hammers’ biggest issues so far this term has been the lack of quality and cohesion in central midfield areas, with Declan Rice, Mark Noble, Pedro Obiang and Carlos Sanchez all featuring alongside regular Jack Wilshere in the middle of the park.

None of those have particularly shined and Sanchez came under fire from his own fans on Twitter for his display against Nuno Santo’s men on Saturday, but perhaps Pellegrini has the answer to his big problem in the form of a player he knows well.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”285457″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Theatre Of Screams & The Serb As Good As Salah”]

Despite being a key player under the Chilean at Manchester City, Pablo Zabaleta has played just 90 minutes of Premier League football for West Ham this season – at right-back in the defeat against Bournemouth.

However, he has the experience, key attributes and quality to play as a defensive midfielder – as he has done on a few occasions in his career previously – and perhaps the 5ft 9in tall ace would be the solution to what is becoming a critical issue for Pellegrini.

So, West Ham fans, do you agree that Zabaleta should be given a chance in the DM role? Let us know by voting below.

West Ham United announce Bilic sacking, fans react

After the final whistle of Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool, all eyes were on West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic. It did not take long for the rumour mill to suggest that it was the end of the road for the Croatian, who has been under pressure all season. The Hammers made an official announcement on Monday morning, releasing a statement on theÂclub’s websiteÂclaiming that the chairmen and the board feel that a “change is now necessary”.

Bilic took over the East London outfit in 2015, signing a three-year contract, which was due to expire at the end of this season.

The 49-year-old took the club from Upton Park to the London Stadium last year, but the results on the pitch did not reflect the magnitude of the move.

The club dangled above relegation in the 2016-17 campaign, but managed to finish in 11th place.

Bilic was unable to inspire the team to an improved start this season, recording just two wins in 11 Premier League games, which has left them in the bottom three, one point from safety.

It has not been all doom and gloom during the Croat’s two-and-a-half-year reign, though, given that he took the Hammers to a seventh-placed finish in the club’s final season at Upton Park.

West Ham fans were quick to react to the managerial announcement on Twitter.

Revealed: 76% of Man United fans would rather sign Griezmann than Lukaku

The season may not officially be over just yet, but Manchester United fans are understandably already looking ahead to the summer transfer window.

After all, the Red Devils now only have Champions League qualification to play for but seem likely to obtain it with two chances to do so – finishing in the Premier League’s top four or winning the Europa League.

United’s forward line looks set for a bit of a revamp this summer and gossip linking them with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann is nothing new – in fact, it’s been commonplace throughout Jose Mourinho’s first season at Old Trafford.

Until now, it’s largely been seen as a case of either/or. But recent reports from The Express suggest the Red Devils could move for both, describing them as Mourinho’s top summer targets.

However, FootballFanCast aren’t completely convinced swoops for both forwards would be achievable in the same summer, so we asked United supporters last week who they want their club to sign more – Griezmann or Lukaku.

Well, the results of our exclusive poll are now in and the Atletico ace has completely run away with it, claiming more than three times the number of votes as the Everton front-man. Are you in the United majority, or would you rather see the club move for Lukaku? Let us know by commenting below…

The top 10 most valuable players currently at Everton

The money floating around in the Premier League nowadays is simply phenomenal.

In fact, the English top flight splashed out more than £1billion on signings during the summer transfer window, whilst 13 clubs smashed their record transfer fees.

That’s an incredible jump from the £600million-odd spent in summer 2013, highlighting how the transfer racket works against a rate of inflation not quite like any other industry in the world.

With that in mind, it’s surely important to know how much your first-team squad is worth in relative terms. And helping in that regard is transfer-mad website TransferMarkt.com.

They equate transfer fees, wages and length of contract to determine the current market values of individual players, which fluctuate on a regular basis.

Football FanCast have been taking a look at Everton’s squad and the market worth of their ten most valuable players certainly makes some interesting reading! There’s a few surprises in here to say the least…

10. Enner Valencia – £8.5m

Everton signed Enner Valencia on loan during the summer and Transfermarkt reckon the Toffees would have to stump up around £8.5million to sign him permanently from West Ham. However, the Ecuador striker has endured a slow start to his Everton career, yet to find the net in three appearances.

9. Oumar Niasse – £10.2m

Despite signing him at a cost of £15.2million in January, Oumar Niasse’s market worth is now just £10.2million. That might have something to do with Ronald Koeman making it abundantly clear in August that the Senegal forward wouldn’t be a part of his first-team plans this season.

8. Ramiro Funes Mori – £10.2m

Transfermarkt think Everton were bang on the money when they paid just shy of £11million for Ramiro Funes Mori. They rate him at £10.2million – likely due to the fact his contract doesn’t expire until 2020.

7. Kevin Mirallas – £11.05m

Kevin Mirallas has proved a shrewd investment since arriving from Olympiacos in summer 2012 at a cost of £6.5million, going on to bag 27 goals in 118 Premier League appearances. According to Transfermarkt, his current market worth exceeds that sum by almost double.

6. Leighton Baines – £11.05m

Leighton Baines may be just a matter of months away from his 32nd birthday but the veteran left-back, who originally cost the Toffees just £6.38million, is still their sixth-most valuable player at £11.05milion.

5. Yannick Bolasie – £11.9m

Did Everton pay over the odds for £24.75million man Yannick Bolasie? Transfermarkt seem to think so, issuing the Congo international a market value of just £11.9million. We’re not so sure Everton fans would agree with that; the winger’s been fantastic since moving to Goodison Park.

4. Seamus Coleman – £14.45m

One of the best attacking right-backs in the business, Transfermarkt believe potential suitors should be playing at least £14.45million for Seamus Coleman. Not bad considering the Toffees paid Sligo Rovers just £60k for him back in 2009.

3. James McCarthy – £14.45m

Everton are reportedly ready to sell James McCarthy in January and that might be because he’d put around £14.45million into Ronald Koeman’s proverbial pocket. Three years ago, the Merseysiders paid Wigan Athletic £13million for the FA Cup winner.

2. Ross Barkley – £18.7m

Bearing the home-grown premium in mind, it’s not surprising to see Ross Barkley coming second in this list. Transfermarkt put his market value at £18.7million – but we reckon Everton could claim twice that sum for the England international.

1. Romelu Lukaku – £34m

Romelu Lukaku may be the second-top scorer in the Premier League, with five goals in six appearances this season, but Transfermarkt reckon his worth has only increased by £4million since Everton paid Chelsea £30million for his services in summer 2014. That’s probably due to the fact Lukaku’s contract hasn’t been renewed, with his current terms due to expire in three years.

Signing Everton man makes all kind of sense for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will be hoping to steer well clear of being dragged into any sort of relegation battle in the second half of the season.

The Eagles sit just three points above third bottom Cardiff City at the moment, and despite the odd big result going their way, they have in the main struggled for consistency.

Roy Hodgson is keen to address the big issues in his squad before the January window slams shut in the coming week, and he is being linked with a move for Everton striker Cenk Tosun, who only joined the Toffees in a big money move last season.

Signing a striker was always going to be a priority for Hodgson and Palace, as the club have limped to a very average 23 goals this season, with most of those coming from the likes of wingers like Wilf Zaha and Andros Townsend.

Down the middle has yielded little success for the club, with Christian Benteke woefully out of form.

The signing of Tosun the makes sense for Palace, and the Turkish star is clearly a man capable of getting in and amongst the goals on his day.

Tosun hasn’t necessarily done anything too wrong at Goodison Park, but new manager Marco Silva clearly doesn’t fancy him as his main number nine, and so a January move for some first team football might be the perfect chance for Tosun to show what he is made of.

Palace need goals, put simply, and Tosun would slot in nicely between their exciting wide-men while taking some of the responsibility off the out of form Benteke.

Palace fans, do you agree? Would you like to see Tosun signed? Let us know!

Liverpool player ratings vs Newcastle: Deadly Darwin Nunez digs out disastrous Reds defence as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk turn in terrible showings

The Reds appeared doomed to defeat after going a goal and a man down at St James' Park, but the Uruguayan sub turned the game on its head

Darwin Nunez came off the bench to earn 10-man Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 victory at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon with a sensational late double that left St James Park in a state of shock.

The Reds looked to have gifted their hosts three points during a three-minute, first-half implosion that saw Anthony Gordon open the scoring after an atrocious error from Trent Alexander-Arnold before Virgil van Dijk got himself sent off for taking out Alexander Isak on the edge of the area.

However, Newcastle failed to kill the game, with Alisson making a stunning save from Miguel Almiron, who also struck the post with a second-half effort.

Liverpool grew in confidence the longer the game wore on, with Jurgen Klopp's changes making a big impact on the proceedings – none more so than Nunez, who took advantage of Sven Botman error to level matters before then producing another excellent finish after being slipped through by Mohamed Salah in injury-time.

GOAL rates Liverpool's players from St James' Park…

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson Becker (8/10):

Betrayed by his back-line once again for the goal but kept Liverpool in the game with the save of the season so far, when he somehow managed to deflect Almiron's close-range drive onto the bar.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (2/10):

Lucky not to have been sent off early on, after fouling Gordon just moments after picking up a needless booking for flicking the ball away, and then gifted Newcastle the opener by mis-controlling a simple pass from Salah in midfield. Even his usually precise passing was off.

    Joel Matip (7/10):

Drafted into the starting line-up because of an injury to Konate and acquitted himself well during a heroic rearguard action.

    Virgil van Dijk (2/10):

Shocking from the skipper, with Van Dijk stupidly getting himself sent off for going through Isak just outside the area. No chance of this red card being overturned.

    Andy Robertson (6/10):

Played with his usual level of passion and tenacity, and also saw plenty of the ball down the left flank even after Van Dijk's dismissal, though if his end product wasn't great.

    Midfield

    Dominik Szoboszlai (6/10):

Started very brightly, looking more than capable of making something happen with his passing and forays forward, but his threat was unsurprisingly curbed after the red card. He never stopped fighting, though, and deserved to end up on the winning team.

    Wataru Endo (6/10):

Used the ball well and covered a huge amount of ground in a desperate attempt to keep Newcastle at bay before being taken off, exhausted, just before the hour mark.

    Alexis Mac Allister (6/10):

Put himself about, making numerous interceptions and challenges before running out of steam in the closing stages.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Mohamed Salah (6/10):

Saw so little of the ball for long periods but he worked tirelessly for the cause and his effort was rewarded when Nunez finished off his late through-ball emphatically.

    Cody Gakpo (5/10):

Had a half-chance shortly before the break but never looked like scoring at any stage, so it was no surprise to see him subbed.

    Luis Diaz (5/10):

The unlucky forward to be withdrawn immediately after the red card. It was a real shame, too, as Diaz had gone closest to scoring for Liverpool, after a characteristically mazy dribble into the area.

    Subs & Manager

    Joe Gomez (7/10):

Came on in place of Van Dijk and did enough to suggest that he should prove a decent replacement for the now-suspended Dutchman.

    Harvey Elliott (6/10):

Replaced Endo shortly after the interval and injected some much-needed energy to a flagging midfield.

    Diogo Jota (6/10):

Somewhat surprisingly dropped to the bench after netting against Bournemouth last week but was introduced in the 58th minute and added a different dimension to the forward line.

    Darwin Nunez (9/10):

Only took over up front for the last 13 minutes of the game but earned Liverpool an incredible victory with two absolutely fantastic finishes that will do wonders for his confidence after starting the first three games of the season on the bench.

    Jarell Quansah (N/A):

Brought on alongside Nunez late on and didn't look overawed at all.

    Jurgen Klopp (8/10):

Credit it where it's due, Klopp's bold and offensive substitutions paid off spectacularly, and you could see how much this victory meant to him at full-time. Sensational.

Palmeiras tenta evitar pior início no Campeonato Brasileiro desde 2015

New manager, same Chelsea? Blues must not panic despite slow start under Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea's long-standing problems reared their ugly head in the hugely disappointing defeat at West Ham, but patience is needed at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea were never going to be a quick fix, but after taking an encouraging – if tentative – step forward in securing a creditable point against Liverpool on the opening day, the Blues took two large strides backwards as they were humbled by West Ham in their second outing of the season on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino's first defeat as head coach has left more questions than answers, as whatever potential his side might have to achieve tangible success remains clouded – despite an eye-watering £346 million ($442m) spend this summer alone.

So, where do the Blues stand after just two games played, as chronic issues begin to pinch once again? GOAL assesses the situation at Stamford Bridge…

GettyLacking cohesion

It was inevitable that it would take some time for Chelsea to click at the beginning of this season amid this summer's unprecedented upheaval. There were the early signs of synergy in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool, with almost everything flowing through the brilliant Enzo Fernandez.

However, as the Argentine toiled against West Ham, any semblance of cohesion between his team-mates seemed to disintegrate. While Raheem Sterling shone, there were calamitous breakdowns in communication in defence for all three goals conceded, while Nicolas Jackson was isolated up front.

Pochettino's men actually dominated the ball and passed with accuracy, but there was an element of not playing to each other's strengths and without incisiveness – with runs wasted and the ball often sent backwards.

However, time heal all wounds, and it's clear the manager is yet to settle on his strongest line-up – especially following Moises Caicedo's £115m ($146m) arrival from Brighton.

Of course, there's no guarantee that throwing money at the problem is the solution. Chelsea learned that the hard way last season, and with the squad still bloated as the transfer window ticks down – the cause of many of their problems as they completely lacked a togetherness last season – they cannot afford to repeat their mistakes.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesInjury problems won't go away

"I don't think you should blame everything on luck that's for sure. I think we can have a look and see what we can do better. Obviously, I've been here a few weeks so I haven't got the answers completely. But clearly, we want to always try to improve and that's an area that we can probably improve."

Those were the words of former Chelsea manager Graham Potter in October 2022, when he was queried on the club's troubling fitness record in recent times. Fast-forward 10 months and the situation is much the same, if not worse.

Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Armando Broja, Marcus Bettinelli and, most recently, Carney Chukwuemeka, all find themselves on the treatment table with the 2023-24 campaign in its infancy.

Indeed, compatriots Fofana and Nkunku were ruled out with long-term knee injuries before a ball had been kicked, while James and Chukwuemeka were sidelined for a number of weeks either side of the West Ham defeat in matchweek two.

Having eight players out injured is arguably tantamount to a crisis, and Pochettino and his fitness coaches face a huge challenge in preventing avoidable injuries going forward. Chelsea clearly cannot afford to be without their best players at this early stage of their development as a team.

Getty ImagesUnable to shake the goal-shyness

Chelsea's inability to create chances and score goals became infamous in 2022-23. Indeed, the Blues ranked 15th in the Premier League for goals scored throughout 2022-23; a damning statistic. The 3-1 reverse at the London Stadium will have undoubtedly set off alarm bells for those supporters who watched Chelsea struggle in front of goal on a regular basis last term, then.

Granted, they created openings at will against an offensive-minded Liverpool side who had gaps in the midfield and a leaky defence on the opening day, although they were let down by some profligate finishing.

That creativity was nowhere to be seen against a more defensive-minded West Ham side despite them monopolising possession, in a display that was emblematic of many of their very worst performances last season. They finished the match with an xG of 2.49 from 17 shots taken, including Enzo's missed penalty, while West Ham's was just 1.8.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: "Teams like us, we need to get the right balance. We should have won the game with our first half. To find the space to create clear chances [is difficult] but overall it is this type of game that is difficult to explain. You had the possession, you create and maybe you were the better side, but in the end you lose."

So what is the solution? Jackson looks capable of becoming a prolific striker once he has gotten off the mark, but Chelsea's cause obviously hasn't been helped by the untimely serious injury to Nkunku – a player who contributed 70 goals and 56 assists in just 172 appearances for RB Leipzig. The Blues were relying on him.

Despite all the money spent, it's perhaps unsurprising that they're on the lookout for a creative player who can play at No.10 or out wide.

Getty ImagesContinuing battle to get wins

In terms of the surviving members of last season's squad especially, this is not a group of players who are not used to winning games, so it's hardly a shock to see them failing to get over the line despite the raft of new faces.

To understand just how deep-rooted an issue this is when it comes to fostering a winning mentality, it's worth noting that Chelsea have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games (D5 L8), and are winless in six since a 3-1 win at Bournemouth in May (D3 L3).

Thankfully the fixture list has been kind to the Blues, with games against presumed relegation-strugglers Luton Town, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth to come either side of a home Carabao Cup tie against AFC Wimbledon. Beyond that, Aston Villa will provide a stern challenge, but victories will be expected against Fulham and Burnley.

Things become much trickier in late October, but Pochettino will see the preceding weeks as absolutely crucial in building confidence, getting points on the board and drawing that winning ruthlessness out of his players.
