Replacing Alberto Moreno is vital for Liverpool; they cannot rely on Milner

Liverpool have turned down an £11m bid from Napoli for left-back Alberto Moreno, according to the Liverpool Echo.

What’s the story?

The Merseyside outfit are believed to be willing to sell the Spaniard, but they are standing firm on their valuation.

The Liverpool Echo claims that the Reds was £15m, and due to the level of interest, they are confident that someone will pay their asking price.

Moreno had a bit-part role under manager Jurgen Klopp last season, starting just two Premier League games and coming on as a substitute in a further 10.

James Milner, who traditionally plays in the middle of the park, assumed the left-back role instead.

Moreno joined the Reds from Sevilla in 2015 in a reported £12m deal.

Can Milner continue at left-back?

There has never been any questions over Milner’s work ethic, and when he was asked to move into an unfamiliar position he just got on with the job.

The 31-year-old did a decent enough job to keep the position throughout the season, but he began to tire towards the end of the campaign.

If Liverpool want to launch a serious title bid, as well as impress in the Champions League, they need a sharp and strong squad.

While Milner did well at left-back, he is on the wrong side of 30, and therefore trying to cope with pacy wide men will only get more challenging.

If Moreno does leave, it would make sense for Klopp to jump into the market for a recognised left-back.

Three changes Wenger needs to make after Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

Arsenal picked up another three points in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, however, they only did so by the skin of their teeth.

Gunners fans faced a nail-biting finish to the game with the Gunners, at times, looking like they would be dropping more points in the Premier League.

It took a penalty deep, deep into stoppage time at the end of the game to bail them out and it was that man Alexis Sanchez who took responsibility for converting it to score his 17th goal of the season in Arsenal colours.

A good result then, but a far from convincing performance and some changes could do with being made ahead of an important FA Cup clash with Southampton this weekend.

Here are THREE changes we think Wenger should make ahead of that one…

Giroud out, Sanchez up top

Make no mistake, Olivier Giroud is a fantastic talent and his goals have, at times, kept Arsenal going over the last four or five weeks. For us, though, there’s no substitute for playing Alexis Sanchez through the middle, his best position and one he can influence the game from most.

Giroud looked listless on Sunday and couldn’t really get himself into the game at all.

Sanchez has 14 goals through the middle this season and although he’s contributed three from six on the left flank, Arsenal have other creative options there.

Wenger needs Sanchez in and around the box, waiting to pounce on opportunities.

Play Iwobi in a different position

Alex Iwobi has been getting most of his game time in an Arsenal shirt on the right or left wing but his most impressive performance by far this season came when he was played through the middle in attacking midfield.

That was against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day and after a frustrating outing on Sunday, he should get a chance to take his place behind the striker again and effect the game from a central position.

If that can be accommodated with a rejig of the Arsenal front four then Wenger should try it. Even putting Iwobi back on the left-hand side would be more welcome than having him on the right again.

The young Nigerian has three assists and a goal from that flank.

He has undoubted talent but to unlock his potential Wenger must play him in his best position.

Bring back Bellerin

Hector Bellerin did not start on Sunday after struggling with fitness but did appear late on from the bench. Bellerin is an important figure on the right-hand side for the Gunners and his struggles with injuries this season have undoubtedly impacted on the team’s general performance.

If he’s fit enough for the bench, he’s likely fit enough to play from the start, so Wenger should show no hesitance in sticking him in the XI against Southampton.

The Saints are likely to provide a tougher test than Burnley and Wenger will need his absolute strongest XI to take the field. Don’t forget, Southampton have already dumped the Gunners out of the EFL Cup this season.

Three January solutions for Newcastle following bitter injury blow

As is usually the case in football, when you are down at the bottom of the league, little seems to go your way.

This is especially true for Newcastle United at the moment, who recently lost goalkeeper Tim Krul for the rest of the season to injury.

With largely untested deputy Karl Darlow also struggling for fitness, manager Steve McClaren must surely be looking to the January window when he might be able to bring in reinforcements.

Here are THREE potential keepers that should be on his radar as he looks to plug a major hole in his squad.

Stephane Ruffier

An option is of course to go out and splash the cash on a player who would fill in for Krul during his absence and then compete with him for the number one jersey on his return.

One such possibility would be Stephane Ruffier. The Saint-Etienne stopper has been a Ligue 1 stalwart for nearly a decade now and his consistency has seen him regularly feature around the fringes of the French national side.

The 29 year old would bring experience and is well accustomed to playing in front of big noisy crowds at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

It is believed that Ruffier, who has spent his entire career in France so far, would like to try his hand elsewhere.

Newcastle would in theory be buying a keeper who is entering his best years. It may not necessarily be a straightforward deal however, as he remains first choice for his current side and they would need to have a replacement in mind to do business in January. The two clubs would also need to agree on a fee, possibly of around £7.5 million.

Victor Valdes

The long-running saga over the future of David De Gea meant that Manchester United went about collecting goalkeepers over the last year or so.

With De Gea now firmly reestablished as the number-one choice, a bit of a queue has formed behind him. Victor Valdes though, is not even in contention having fallen foul of Louis Van Gaal for supposedly refusing to play in the reserves .

The Spaniard won virtually everything in the game during a 12-year spell at Barcelona and a more battle-hardened stopper would be difficult to come by. The breakdown in relations with the manager should have seen him make a quick exit but a move to Turkey collapsed.

It is possible Valdes is content to sit with his feet up, or at the very least wait for a chance to return to Spain. If he could be motivated to move to the north east however, it could prove an absolute masterstroke as there is no disputing his credentials and he would represent a low-risk, short-term solution.

Sam Johnstone

Young English keeper Sam Johnstone is also at Old Trafford, but unlike Valdes he is early in his career. However, similarly to his team-mate, his chances of first-team football appear slim.

He is currently third choice behind De Gea and Sergio Romero but the club have refused to allow him to go on loan after Van Gaal and Valdes burnt their bridges.

At 22 Johnstone could represent a sound investment for The Magpies if they could bring him in. He is highly rated at Old Trafford but with De Gea now committed for the foreseeable future, the England youth international may well need to move on to have any chance of establishing himself as a Premier League player.

His lack of experience could prove the main barrier to any move as Johnstone has yet to feature for a team above the Championship.

Come January, his current manager plans to review the decision not to loan him out so it is possible that Newcastle could peruse a temporary switch with an option to buy at that stage.

Brehme's death comes just over a month after the passing of another Germany icon in Franz Beckenbauer. says Brehme was "deeply affected" by the loss of Beckenbauer, who coached him for the German national team. After hanging up his boots, Brehme moved into coaching himself, taking charge at Kaiserslautern and Unterhaching before spending a year at Stuttgart in an assistant role.

Lothar Matthaus famously described Brehme as the most talented footballer he played with, and he will forever be remembered for the lasting impact he made on the game.

Ex-defender frustrated over lack of opportunitiesWill not apply for any more managerial jobsArsenal legend wants to be involved in footballWHAT HAPPENED?

Since his retirement from the game in 2011, Campbell has attempted to get his managerial career up and running. However, he spent less than a year in charge of Macclesfield, avoiding relegation from League Two on the final day of the season. He was then appointed manager of League One side Southend United, but his job was made more difficult by financial issues and his team were relegated as they sat second bottom of the table when the season was stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Campbell's disappointing record as a manager comes despite his excellent experience as a defender. The former centre-back won two Premier League titles and four FA Cups during a glittering career that saw him represent the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal, Portsmouth and Newcastle. He also made 73 appearances for the England national team.

Campbell has been vocal about his frustration due to the lack of high-profile job offers over the years, saying in 2018 that he is "one of the greatest minds in football".

WHAT SOL CAMPBELL SAID

Campbell has since decided that he will not be pursuing more managerial jobs, saying at the Web Summit in Lisbon: "For me, it is about getting opportunities to fail. Some of my peers have had jobs and it's not worked out and then they have had opportunities again straight away, they've always had a lifeline. That is a nice position to be in. I am not in that position, I would love to be, but those situations are not coming to me.

"I would love to be involved in football and have chances, but that is not happening. You have to look at football in a different way and that is what I am going to start doing and hopefully it will work out and I will be able to help players, just in a different way."

The 49-year-old will likely look for other jobs within football other than head coaching roles. He added: "I love coaching, so I am going to go back into football in a meaningful way. I have had to go away, studied at Harvard. I want to be in football in a meaningful way. It won't be on the sideline."

Cabinet reshuffle teased with 'Here We Go' catchphrase Further transfer lingo employed to announce appointments Football fans unimpressedWHAT HAPPENED?

While the political world set about dissecting the ramifications of Sunak's cabinet reshuffle on Monday, keen-eyed football fans were quick to notice some familiar language on the Conservative Party's social media feeds.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) trailing the reshuffle employed Fabrizio Romano "Here we go" catchphrase along with the message that the tagline: "Rishi Sunak strengthens his team." James Cleverly's appointment as Home Secretary about an hour later was announced as a "huge move." While further transfer lingo such as "agreement reached" and "confirmed" were to follow.

Sunak's spell as prime minister has seen an upgrade in Downing Street's social media game, with music-backed videos detailing his latest work a regular feature. Sunak is a fan of Championship side Southampton fan and has been spotted at St Mary's on occasion. Though few saw a major government reshuffle being themed on transfer guru Romano coming. And many were less than impressed.

WHAT THEY SAID

"Fabrizio Romano wants his catchphrase back," ordered one account.

"Who is in charge of the social media team? You're an official government page, not a football team announcing a deadline day transfer deal," grumbled another.

The man himself eventually replied, his shocked-face emoji clearly implying he was not in on the plan.

Man City player ratings vs Southampton: Bayern Munich beware! Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are clicking back into gear

The Premier League champions closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to five points with a dominant 4-1 win on the south coast

Manchester City warmed-up for their Champions League quarter-final meeting with Bayern Munich by cruising to a 4-1 win over the Premier League's bottom side Southampton as Erling Haaland marked his return to the line up with two goals.

Haaland missed last week's win over Liverpool, but showed few signs of rust against the Saints, netting either side of half-time as City closed the gap on leaders Arsenal back to five points.

Jack Grealish and Julian Alvarez were also on the scoresheet and Kevin De Bruyne brought up a century of Premier League assists in a virtuoso display for Pep Guardiola's side, whose only disappointment will have been their failure to keep a clean sheet after Sekou Mara netted for the home side.

Mostly a spectator, and had no chance with Mara's consolation goal.

    John Stones (6/10):

Might as well be listed as a central midfielder given his positioning, and neat passing suggested he could one day play there permanently. Substituted early in the second half.

    Manuel Akanji (5/10):

Struggled with the pace and trickery of Sulemana at times, though Stones' positioning did leave him rather exposed.

    Ruben Dias (7/10):

Looks to be getting back to his best after finally earning back his place in Guardiola's preferred line up.

Khawaja knows he could be squeezed out

Usman Khawaja might be one of Australia’s most in-form players in any format, but he does not necessarily expect to be part of the starting XI for the World Twenty20 in India

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-20162:23

‘Any series win is good’ – Khawaja

Usman Khawaja might be one of Australia’s most in-form players in any format, but he does not necessarily expect to be part of the starting XI for the World Twenty20 in India. Khawaja opened the batting and scored 33 from 25 balls in Australia’s win over South Africa in the third T20 in Cape Town on Wednesday, a win that secured them a 2-1 series victory. But in none of the three games did Australia use the same opening combination, instead testing all options ahead of the World T20, with David Warner set to stay down the order. In game one, Khawaja opened with Aaron Finch, in game two it was Finch and Shane Watson, and in game three Watson and Khawaja were used as the opening pair.Khawaja only made his T20 international debut this summer but has been consistently scoring runs in every format at almost every level this season. However, Watson’s all-round value and the experience of Finch, the No.1-ranked T20 international batsman in the world and until recently Australia’s captain, could mean Khawaja misses out.”We’ve got world-class players in our team,” Khawaja said after the third match in Cape Town. “Finchy didn’t play today and he’s one of the best T20 players in the world, so we’ve got a lot of batting depth and strength.”Finchy was there before I was, when I came into the team he was T20 captain. He’s been there and done it, I was the player coming in. I sort of expect him to come back into the team. Then Watto’s been such a great player for Australia, in particular with the white ball. His white-ball form lately has been great. He offers a lot with the ball too.”The dynamics are pretty simple. We’re pretty good mates off the field. I’ve known Finchy since I was a kid, we’ve been playing cricket together since we were kids, we’re the same age. Obviously I play with Watto at the Thunder so it’s a good relationship.”In the win at Newlands, Watson made 42, captain Steven Smith top scored with 44 at No.3, and Warner in his new middle-order spot managed 33 at No.4 to help Australia to victory. Most members of the squad were used in at least two of the three matches in South Africa as Australia sought to settle their preferred XI ahead of the World T20.”First and foremost we won the series,” Khawaja said. “We wanted to go into the World Cup on a winning note. It’s always a little bit tougher when you haven’t. The fact that we won is a big bonus. I think everyone just about in the squad has contributed somewhat in the last three games, which is nice.”Australia play a warm-up match against West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday, ahead of their opening match of the tournament proper against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Friday next week.
