Guarani x Ponte Preta: clubes promovem treino aberto à torcida

A vida continua. CBF continua. É uma instituição maior do que todos e hoje de maneira especial, com a eleição do Rogério para presidente – finalizou.

Can Ponting lead Australia out of their spin woes?

ESPNcricinfo previews the game between Australia and New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup

The Preview by Sriram Veera24-Feb-2011Match FactsFebruary 25, Nagpur
Start time: 09:30 local time (04:00 GMT)
Where are the runs hidden?•Associated Press

Big PictureIt’s almost as if there is malicious glee that follows Australia’s so-called decline. Ashes lost? Yay! Ricky Ponting accidentally breaks a TV set? What irresponsible behaviour! Australia are struggling against spinners? Wonderful! In some ways, it’s human nature to gloat at Goliath’s fall. At the centre of the storm is Ponting, trying hard to regain his batting form, trying to hide the Ashes blot in his CV with another World-Cup triumph. In Australia’s previous victorious campaigns, Ponting has led from the front with the bat but this time a question mark hovers around that possibility. Australia’s campaign in this edition of the World Cup could well revolve around Ponting’s form at No. 3. He got couple of hard-earned fifties in the warm-up games and looked to be slowly progressing towards recovering his touch. The bowling is led by another ageing campaigner, Brett Lee, who is scripting a remarkable comeback. Much has been written about Australia’s attack which stands out for its naked violence. The feeling is that they will either scythe through the opposition or fail to control the run-flow on these batting tracks. On the other side, there is New Zealand, who are playing this game under the grim background of the Christchurch earthquake. “For a lot of the guys, coming to training has allowed them to take their mind off things,” Daniel Vettori said. New Zealand have had a poor build-up to the World Cup, but they started the tournament with a crushing win against Kenya. Their batting line-up looks quite strong with the likes of Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor and Scott Styris and it’s their bowling which looks a bit iffy. Will their seamers be able to adapt to these tracks? Much will depend on spinners Vettori and Nathan McCullum, who is likely to open the bowling with the new ball. New Zealand will hope that the pitch will take some turn and they can poke at Australia’s vulnerability against spin on these slow tracks. It should be an interesting battle.Form guide (Most recent first for the last five completed games)
Australia: WWWWL
New Zealand: LWLLL
Watch out for… Shane Watson’s revival began here in India during the inaugural edition of the IPL. He adapted brilliantly and transformed himself into a smashing opener and took that form and confidence to the international stage. On Indian tracks, he likes to get on the front foot and scythe through the line. With Brad Haddin yet to learn the art of converting starts and with Ponting yet to get a regain his form completely, much will depend on Watson to set a solid platform.Nathan McCullum is not a bowler who causes sleepless nights to batsmen but he could play a crucial role if Vettori decides to give him the new ball. He is accurate and spins the ball just enough to pose some problems. How he handles the pressure of bowling against Watson, Haddin and co might well decide how New Zealand fare with the ball.Team newsNew Zealand have chosen their playing 12. Kyle Mills, Kane Williamson, and Luke Woodcock will miss out.New Zealand (probable): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Jesse Ryder, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 James Franklin, 6 Scott Stryis, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Hamish Bennett, 11 Tim SoutheeAustralia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Steve Smith, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Jason Krezja, 10 Brett Lee, 11 Shaun Tait..Stats and trivia Ricky Ponting is the player who has played the most World Cup games. He has played 40 matches, going past Glenn McGrath’s 39 appearances. He has also led Australia 23 times, the second-highest by any World Cup captain, after New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming (27). Australia are yet to lose a World Cup game under Ponting. In the game against Zimbabwe, Ponting became the fourth batsman in the World Cup to be run out on five occasions. The others are: Inzamam-ul-Haq (9), Asanka Gurusinha (6) and Javed Miandad (5) Australia have faced New Zealand 123 times and have won 84 games. In India, these two teams have played against each other seven times, with Australia victorious in all seven.Quotes”Nothing really changes from any team you’re playing in the subcontinent, you try and bowl straight at the wickets and you know you’re going to have to score a lot of runs. There’s no mystery to what we’re going to try to do, but the key when you come up against these big teams and big players is having the presence of mind to execute time and time again. That’s the toughest thing when you’re coming up against good players.”

Newcastle: Exciting Lucas Paqueta claim

Newcastle United fans would be ‘licking their lips in anticipation’ if the club reunited Lucas Paqueta with Bruno Guimaraes.

That’s according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about Newcastle’s summer target.

The lowdown

According to French outlet Le10Sport, Newcastle saw a £34million bid for Paqueta rejected last year following the takeover at St James’ Park. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder has more recently claimed that the Magpies are ‘in with a great chance’ of landing the Brazilian this summer.

Paqueta’s future is uncertain, with sources indicating that he’s told manager Peter Bosz that he’ll make his decision this month.

Guimaraes, who played with the former AC Milan star at the Stade Gerland before his £40million switch to Newcastle, has offered his recommendation.

The latest

O’Rourke says supporters would relish the chance to see the pair rekindle their partnership in the north east. He believes it could be the stuff of ‘dreams’ for the Toon.

“It would definitely be something that would have a lot of Newcastle fans licking their lips in anticipation of what they can do,” he tells GMS.

“Bruno Guimaraes has already established himself as a big fans’ favourite at the club and he linked up really well with Paqueta at Lyon.

“If those two could be reunited, they could be a dream pairing for Newcastle going forward.”

The verdict

It’s clear that the bond between the two players is incredibly strong. Paqueta told Guimaraes following his January move that he would miss him ‘so much, on and off the pitch’.

In reply, Guimaraes described Paqueta as the ‘brother’ he never had and said it had been a ‘huge pleasure’ to play alongside him.

That connection materialised on the field in a 1-1 draw between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain at the start of the year as Guimaraes provided a ‘beautiful assist’ for his team-mate.

If £50,000-per-week star Paqueta does decide to leave, his former midfield partner will surely do all he can to persuade him to pick Newcastle.

Spurs: Paratici "will look at" Adama Traore

Tottenham Hotspur could be back in for Wolves star Adama Traore this summer according to football.london journalist Alasdair Gold.

What’s the story?

During a Q&A for football.london, the journalist revealed: “I would imagine that Fabio Paratici will look at him again as he’s a big fan but I think, after an explosive first week or two, Traore has reverted to type at Barcelona and he’s struggled to get minutes outside the Europe League matches and when he has there have been no assists or goals.

“Dejan Kulusevski is a far, far better player for me and fits Conte’s system perfectly. The only thing Traore would bring at Tottenham is a different option from the bench with his pace and strength and he won’t be as expensive with just a year left on his deal, but he’s had yet another season of proving that his end product is very rarely there. I still think the idea of him as a wing-back is bizarre, and those who have seen his defending at Wolves tend to agree.”

Paratici could strike gold for Spurs

Having looked at him considerably as a potential signing in the January transfer window, Spurs watched on as Barcelona came in and lured him back to his native Spain.

While things haven’t worked out so well in Catalunya – Traore has managed just two assists in nine La Liga games – a return to the Premier League with Spurs and Antonio Conte could be the change needed to spark him into life.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp once hailed him as “unplayable” following a previous performance against the Anfield side, while Rio Ferdinand has even described him as a “machine” and someone who’s “been scaring defenders”.

The £50k-per-week Spaniard’s sheer pace could give Spurs a different dimension to the likes of Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski, and with his ability to play further forward as part of the front three, or as a potential wing-back, he would Conte some much-needed choice.

Furthermore, Traore would have just 12 months left on his contract this summer, as Gold rightly points out, and that should play into Spurs’ hands.

It’s very likely that Wolves may look to cash in on the Spaniard on the cheap and ensure that they actually reap some sort of transfer fee rather than losing him on a free next summer, and given his abundance of Premier League experience, he would represent a shrewd signing for Spurs.

Afghanistan lose Latif's services

Afghanistan have suffered another blow as Rashid Latif, who took up the post of batting coach last month, has resigned less than a week after head coach Kabir Khan was dumped by the Afghan Board

Cricinfo staff23-Aug-2010Afghanistan have suffered another blow as Rashid Latif, who took up the post of batting coach last month, has resigned less than a week after head coach Kabir Khan was dumped by the Afghan Board.Latif reportedly officially offered his resignation through an email to the board, and like Khan cited interference with his coaching role as the main reason behind his decision. “Kabir also left his job because of the same reason. I was not free to impose my ideas on the team. From team combination to the match strategy, the Afghan board officials want to dictate everything,” said Latif.Hamid Shinwari, the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s chief executive, struck back by telling the that the board “received Rashid’s resignation and fully respect his choice, but are shocked to receive a long list of new demands just 25 days after signing a contract with him.”The ACB had issued a press release explaining that Latif would take over the coaching role after Khan’s departure, but Shinwari suggested that Latif had asked the ACB to either re-hire Khan as coach or double his own salary and increase his benefits if he were to take up the role. The ACB’s response was that they could not afford his demands, and so the senior national side now find themselves without a coach.Shinwari explained that the ACB was in contact with the ICC and had requested help in hiring a new coach, who would join the national squad prior to the team’s Kenya tour in October this year. Afghanistan’s problems could run even deeper than a search for a new coach, however, as Latif added that he had given a comprehensive plan to the Afghan Cricket authorities for the development of the game at the grassroots level which included the establishment of academies and grounds, but his suggestions had been ignored.Latif explained that he had also wanted the Afghan team to practice more at home, but the board seemed not to like the idea. “Since I had a good training session with the Afghan cricketers in Jalalabad, hence I wanted more training sessions in Jalalabad and Kabul, but the authorities want to hold camps in Sharjah. With this attitude the Afghan cricket would go nowhere.”Raees Ahmadzai, a regular in the national team, has raised similar concerns in his blog for . “We wanted to do something for Afghanistan and we worked our hardest to make it happen,” wrote Ahmadzai. “We had hoped that this was a legacy that Afghanistan’s future cricket stars would embrace. We had built it with the hope we were starting a legacy, but unfortunately, the structures that need to be in place for grassroots cricket to really take off are still nowhere to be seen in Afghanistan.”The investment in grassrooots cricket in Afghanistan still hasn’t happened,” he added. “We do not have any professional grounds, proper academies in Kabul, or a club cricket structure to put young Afghan cricket enthusiasts through. With the ICC pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the ACB, plus the investment from the US embassy in Kabul, $350,000 from Etisalat and $200,000 from Supreme Group, we should be in a much more advanced position.”Ahmadzai went on to express his sadness that Afghanistan still had not played any one-day internationals against Test nations despite gaining ODI status more than 18 months ago and lamented the fact that “the incentive for the youth to play is slowly diminishing.”

Leeds handed potentially big injury blow

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch will be sweating on the fitness of young striker Joe Gelhardt ahead of this weekend’s clash with Watford after he hobbled off in Monday’s appearance for the U23 side…

What’s the latest?

The 19-year-old striker was in action for the youth team earlier this week as he looked to build up match fitness for the first-team squad but he was withdrawn just after half an hour in their win over Crystal Palace.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites’ initial belief was that the forward had suffered a dead leg and whilst they had no major concerns, he would be assessed on Tuesday morning.

A back spasm made him unavailable to start against Wolves before the international break and now Marsch will be anxiously hoping that this knock isn’t serious.

Another potential blow

This could potentially be another gutting blow for the American, having already lost his only senior striker Patrick Bamford to a recurring problem and at the weekend, he was also without Pascal Struijk, who was nursing a new hamstring issue.

The BBC believe Bamford could miss the remainder of the season, leaving the former RB Leipzig and Salzburg man hugely light on options, so to be sweating over Gelhardt is a cause for concern heading into a big encounter against the Hornets, who are fighting for their lives in that final relegation spot, eight points behind Leeds.

Marsch is keen to “expand” the youngster’s role in the squad. Speaking to the YEP recently, he said:

“With Joffy we haven’t been able to get him the rhythm and training and everything the way that we have wanted, which has meant that he’s played more of a reserve role, but I thought he came on the game and gave a real boost and was clear with the role and was dangerous at times.

“We certainly…I think you have to consider expanding his role more and more and more within the team and we need him to train.

“The plan will be that he plays with the 23s on Monday and hopefully gets more good game minutes and keeps adapting to the style of play we want.”

A little over half an hour is perhaps a little under the American’s expectations, so even if it is a dead leg and he’s passed fit to feature at the weekend, it’s hard to see him starting, given the aforementioned verdict.

Once described as a “human wrecking ball” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, the Liverpool-born attacker has proven his ability at this level in small spurts by scoring at Stamford Bridge in an eight-minute cameo, delivering an assist against Arsenal and bagging an injury-time winner against relegation rivals Norwich City.

Marsch will now be sweating on his availability ahead of Saturday’s clash.

AND in other news, Marsch could finally axe “headless” Leeds flop by signing “crazy” £14.4m-rated dynamo…

Ojha backs batsmen to match mammoth score

Pragyan Ojha, the Indian left-arm spinner who toiled for 46 overs for one wicket on an unresponsive SSC pitch, believes that India should be able to bat their way out of trouble, with three days remaining in the Test.”It’s a very good wicket to bat on,” Ojha said. “You have seen it for the last two days. Once you’re set, you can just bat on. These guys [the Sri Lankan batsmen] have showed that as long as you can avoid silly mistakes, you’re going to get a good score.”In reply to Sri Lanka’s 642 for 4 declared, India made a positive start in the final hour of the second day, reaching 95 without loss. Virender Sehwag raced away to an unbeaten fifty, and the Sri Lankan attack – sans Murali and Malinga – didn’t cause many problems. Ojha doesn’t expect too much wear and tear on the pitch in the coming days.”The way things are going, I don’t think our batsmen will have any problem,” Ojha said. “The wicket is rock-solid, and I just hope that our guys bat on and on.”Ojha and his bowling mates haven’t had a great time on the trip so far, and the pitch at the SSC didn’t give them much chance either. “There wasn’t much turn for me,” Ojha said. “It was coming on to the bat with the new ball and the old ball wasn’t doing much.”As a bowler, especially as a spinner, all you can do is to do the basics right, keep it tight and just make the batsmen struggle for each and every run. They shouldn’t [be allowed to] get it easily.”This was the seventh straight time that India lost the toss in Tests. In Sri Lanka it becomes a big factor for touring teams, because the hosts are very good at ruling out a defeat once they win the toss in a home Test. “I think winning or losing the toss is not in our hands,” Ojha said. “We would have liked to bowl second. If we would have got the amount of runs the Sri Lankans have got, it would have been different.”
