Xavier Doherty's chance to go all the way

Xavier Doherty’s sudden elevation to the Test squad will only turn into a trip to Brisbane if he can out-bowl Nathan Hauritz at the SCG this week. Doherty, the left-arm spinner, will go head-to-head with the incumbent Hauritz when Tasmania play New South Wales from Wednesday.Having gained a full-time spot in the Tigers’ line-up this season, Doherty jumped into a one-day debut two weeks ago. He is on the verge of another big leap after being picked in the huge 17-man squad for the opening Test, but has to make the final cut when the outfit is trimmed to 12 or 13.”I guess it’s probably come down to that given the fact that they will cut it back by the end of the week,” Doherty said in Sydney. “They are obviously looking at something this week, I guess this week’s performances probably won’t hurt too much.”Like most people, Doherty, 27, was surprised by the elevation. “I guess it wasn’t that long ago that I was not even carrying the drinks for Tassie,” he said. “It comes as a bit of a shock and it’s a nice shock.”Usman Khawaja was on the tour to England for the Pakistan Tests during the winter but didn’t get a game. It has made him even more desperate to play.”Just getting a baggy green one day would be a dream,” he said in Hobart. “I never try to put too much pressure on myself. If it is meant to happen it happens.”Khawaja will be jostling with Callum Ferguson and Steven Smith in Australia A’s match against England, although the tourists will have their four best bowlers preparing in Brisbane. Ferguson, who is back after a knee reconstruction, is in his first ODI squad after impressing in 26 ODIs.”After 11-and-a-half months of rehab, I really didn’t expect to be here right now,” Ferguson said. “There’s a lot of uncertainty when you hurt your knee like I did. I’m just thrilled to be back playing cricket.”Ryan Harris is battling a persistent knee injury and doesn’t expect to play at the Gabba, but he insists he’ll be ready when needed. “In all honesty I don’t think I’ll be included in that first Test,” he told AAP. “But if someone goes down and things change, I will be ready to go. That’s going to be my role – to be ready if anything goes wrong.”Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said Phillip Hughes was disappointed to miss out, but the team did not need cover for the openers Simon Katich and Shane Watson. “We would consider him in a middle-order position,” Hilditch said, “but at the moment we think the two young players from Australia A we picked are in a bit better form and ready to go.”

Manchester United: Sky Sports relay Nemanja Matic news

Sky Sports have relayed news live on TV regarding Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic and his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.

The Lowdown: Matic’s Old Trafford career

Matic made the move to United back in 2017 from Chelsea in a deal worth over £40m. Since then, the holding midfielder has gone on to make more than 180 appearances for the Red Devils, with 27 of those coming this season.

His current contract still has over 12 months left to run, however, Matic has now announced that he will leave the club over the coming months.

The Latest: Sky Sports relay on-air news

United shared the news on their official website, with Sky Sports News sharing the update live on TV.

They labelled it as ‘significant if you support Man Utd’, describing the midfielder as ‘the first out of the door’ at Old Trafford.

The Verdict: First of many?

Erik ten Hag looks set to come in to replace Ralf Rangnick in the summer and may well have plenty of key decisions to make on a number of players.

United have five players who will be out of contract at the end of June, including Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is also in doubt.

Matic’s departure could prove to be the first of many in a major Old Trafford shake-up under Ten Hag, and a new defensive midfielder could now be a priority heading into the summer.

Kenya slump to third defeat

Baroda Cricket Association XI handed Kenya their third successive defeat in the tri-series as the hosts fell short by 32 runs in their chase of 257 in Nairobi

Cricinfo staff03-Aug-2010
ScorecardBaroda Cricket Association XI handed Kenya their third successive defeat in the tri-series as the hosts fell short by 32 runs in their chase of 257 in Nairobi.Pinal Shah, the captain, and Yusuf Pathan put on 98 runs for the fourth wicket after Baroda were in trouble at 90 for 3. Both batsmen hit aggressive sixties before Shah fell to offspinner James Ngoche. At 227 for 4, with Pathan at the crease, Baroda were poised to score 300. However, Pathan’s dismissal to Ngoche triggered a collapse and Baroda lost their last six wickets for 29 runs. Ngoche took three of those six wickets, finishing with 4 for 59 off eight overs, as Baroda were dismissed with 26 balls remaining.Kenya had been reduced to 33 for 3 in their chase when Collins Obuya and Jimmy Kamande came together. The duo added 125 runs with Kamande being particularly watchful, taking 99 balls for his 68. Once Obuya fell for 86, however, the target of 257 proved beyond the other batsmen, and Kenya finished on 224 for 8 off 50 overs.

Newcastle transfer news: Botman & Carlos

Craig Hope has dropped some Newcastle United transfer news involving both Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

The Lowdown: Wanted men

Both Botman and Carlos were subject of strong interest at St. James’ Park in the January transfer window, as they reportedly made a bid for the former, while they pushed hard to try and sign Carlos after failing with Botman.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-4/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Nonetheless, they ended up signing Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion instead, who has been superb, but that may not stop them looking for another central defender in the summer.

The Latest: Hope update

Replying to a Magpies fan on Twitter, The Daily Mail journalist Hope has revealed that the North East club sent officials to watch Lille’s clash at Stamford Bridge, but could now be looking at alternative options to Botman and Carlos:

“Sven Botman is interesting. They watched him when Lille played at Chelsea recently but there’s also now a suggestion they’re looking at other options.

“I’d say Diego Carlos is looking less likely given age & fee, it felt like one for January only.”

The Verdict: Botman over Carlos

If the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium were only to bring one of the players to Tyneside, then Botman should be the one that they go for.

The Lille centre-back is currently averaging more interceptions and clearances than Carlos is for Sevilla in their respective domestic leagues, while offensively, he has scored more goals, made more assists, and averages more dribbles and key passes at a higher success rate (WhoScored).

Crucially though, Botman is also seven years younger than Carlos at just 22, and so has a much higher ceiling.

Nonetheless, either would help elevate the quality of the backline, but if the Toon had to go for one, then Botman’s their man.

Hampshire give themselves a shot at revival

In an intriguingly balanced match on a testing pitch, Hampshire have a platform from which they might just lift their spirits after a woefully poor beginning to the season with a win over the First Division leaders

Jon Culley at Trent Bridge18-May-2010
Scorecard
In an intriguingly balanced match on a testing pitch, Hampshire have a platform from which they might just lift their spirits after a woefully poor beginning to the season with a win over the First Division leaders. It is an unsteady platform, for sure, represented by a lead of just 35 runs, but after losing four of their first five matches in the Championship, to be in with a chance at the half-way stage in this one must feel like progress.Much will depend, of course, on how they bowl on day three, given that a big target on the last day could be a daunting prospect for a batting line-up lacking Michael Carberry as well as Michael Lumb and Dimitri Mascarenhas. Variable bounce is likely to be a factor on a dry, cracked pitch. They will look again to Jimmy Adams, who missed out by four runs on a first century of the campaign but was the fulcrum nonetheless of a steadfast performance from Hampshire, whose record contrasts with Nottinghamshire’s four wins from four.It could be a good moment, too, for Neil McKenzie, the former South African Test batsman, to properly prove his value to the county after a slow start to his Hampshire career. The way in which he ended a run of low scores with a first half-century in the Championship perhaps signalled a timely return to form. Two partnerships were pivotal on day two, the first of which saw Adams and Chris Benham add 115 after the loss of nightwatchman James Tomlinson left them 39 for 2.At the start of it, Darren Pattinson bowled superbly, maintaining excellent control, finding movement off the pitch as well as through the air and beating the bat repeatedly. He looked a bit like the Pattinson of two years ago, before he earned his solitary and controversial Test call-up. James Whitaker, the England selector, was looking on, as he often was then, although it would be a surprise if he is mentioned in dispatches this time.Charlie Shreck was no less impressive and when he and Pattinson gave way, Andre Adams and Paul Franks kept up the pressure. In an enthralling contest, the Hampshire pair were made to work for their runs.Indeed, their application was impressive, in particular from Jimmy Adams, who grafted for 153 balls to get to 50, although he should have been caught at second slip off his namesake’s bowling on 37, Neil Edwards spilling the chance.Benham, who had a painful blow on the elbow facing Adams the bowler, survived a difficult chance to the wicketkeeper off Pattinson on 20 soon after lunch.Adams at last found an opportunity to attack when Nottinghamshire introduced Samit Patel’s left-arm spin an hour into the afternoon session. His next 46 runs came much more briskly, all bar six of them in boundaries, but Nottinghamshire regained the initiative again when Shreck broke the stand by bowling Benham. Then Franks, who had been turned down in a vigorous appeal for lbw moments earlier, found some extra bounce and movement to Adams, who was caught behind off a thin contact and walked without waiting for the umpire’s verdict.Franks, whose all-round talents saw him accelerated into the England one-day side a decade ago only for a knee injury to blunt his progress, has been in and out of the Nottinghamshire side in recent years but seems to be thriving again now, with Mark Ealham’s retirement offering the chance to forge a permanent place. Full of confidence, he struck again four balls later in the same over, James Vince hitting him straight to Steven Mullaney at midwicket. Vince is a young man who might interest Whitaker and company at some stage, but not on this occasion. With his quick demise, Hampshire were five down and still 102 adrift. Nottinghamshire sensed a chance to take the upper hand decisively. But McKenzie and Nic Pothas had other ideas. Adding 74 in 23 overs, they swung the balance again towards Hampshire before, Pattinson, with the new ball, trapped McKenzie leg before with a fuller delivery.Adams, whose last spell was his best, dismissed Pothas and mopped up the tail to finish with 4 for 56, but not before Sean Ervine had eked out a valuable unbeaten 31 for a lead of 35.

Wolves: Lage must unleash Dion Sanderson

In the early days of the January transfer window, Wolves made the decision to recall defender Dion Sanderson from his loan spell with Birmingham City in the Championship.

During his time at St Andrew’s, the 22-year-old made 16 senior appearances for the club across the Championship and Carabao Cup, keeping six clean sheets in the process.

As a product of Wolves’ youth system, Sanderson had completed two previous loan spells before making the move to Birmingham, with Sunderland and Cardiff City also having him in their respective squads.

At Wolves, the defender has made 46 appearances for the under-18 side and 27 for the under-23s, but he only has one appearance for their first team, which came during their fourth round Carabao Cup clash against Aston Villa in 2019.

Now that he has returned to Molineux, this could be his chance to show to Bruno Lage, the rest of the coaching staff and the Wolves fans that he has what it takes to be a regular figure for the Old Gold instead of going out on loan again.

Time to unleash Sanderson

Wolves are temporarily without Romain Saiss after he recently jetted off to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Moroccan has been a significant player for Lage this season, having started all 19 of their league games and earned himself a solid overall performance rating of 7.02/10 from WhoScored, making him their second-highest rated player. However, the 31-year-old’s absence could pave the way for Sanderson to take his place in the team for the time being.

In addition, with fellow Wolves defender Willy Boly having a worrying injury record, this could also persuade Lage to give Sanderson the chance to prove himself in the first team at Molineux.

Having been labelled a “Rolls Royce” of a player by Sunderland manager Lee Johnson during his time at the Wearside club, the 22-year-old could end up saving Wolves and Jeff Shi millions in potential transfer fees if he proves to be a useful option by impressing on the pitch.

However, his lack of Premier League experience could deter Lage from giving him a chance to play given how Wolves haven’t exactly been firing on all cylinders in terms of their attack, with just 14 goals scored in 19 games. They have instead relied on their sturdy defence to see them through games this season, with just 14 goals conceded, and that is the standard Sanderson must meet if he wants to make a first team breakthrough at Molineux in 2022.

Leeds: Whites not in for Ronaldo Vieira

Leeds United are not looking to sign former midfielder Ronaldo Vieira this month, according to The Mirror’s David Anderson.

The Lowdown: Italian reports

The Whites are looking to bring in two midfielders before the end of the month, with numerous updates emerging from Italy regarding Vieira.

The 23-year-old has recently returned to Sampdoria’s matchday squad following a lengthy period out through injury, with reports towards the end of 2021 suggesting Vieira was ‘ready to return home’ with his bags packed.

A recent story went as far as to say Leeds are ready to sign Vieira over the coming weeks, however, it doesn’t seem as if that will materialise after all.

The Latest: Anderson’s post

Anderson took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to provide an update on the Englishman.

This is what he had to say, revealing the Whites are not making a move for Vieira.

“I know Leeds fans would rather hear who they are trying to sign, but it is my understanding that they are not attempting to re-sign old boy Ronaldo Vieira.”

The Verdict: Correct call?

Leeds currently have Kalvin Phillips and Jamie Shackleton out injured, leaving them with just two out-and-out midfielders available.

Vieira’s last competitive appearance came way back in February though, so it wouldn’t make sense to bring an injury-hit midfielder to rescue Leeds’ injury-hit squad.

There’s no denying that the Whites need additions in the middle of the pitch before the month is out, however, they need to be the correct ones in both the short and long term, so it seems to be the right move to not pursue Vieira going off his recent injury woes.
