WICB announce franchise-based T20 league

The West Indies cricket board is preparing to launch its franchise-based Twenty20 league in 2013 and they have finalised an agreement with Verus International, a Barbados-based merchant bank, for funding the competition. The league is likely to comprise six Caribbean city-based franchises with the majority of players from the West Indies. As part of the arrangement, the WICB will receive annual funding for additional retainer contracts for players. The board currently funds 20 annual retainer contracts.”A significant number of players at the regional level will benefit through greater financial stability both from playing in the league and from year-round retainer contracts while having an international platform on which to showcase their skills and talent,” Dr Julian Hunte, the WICB president, said.”Most importantly, the league will bring a huge financial injection into the Caribbean and create significant job opportunities across the region in a wide cross section of sectors.”Ernest Hilaire, the former chief executive of the WICB, had initially revealed that a “commercial Twenty20” league in the Caribbean was in the works in September. Last month, Hilaire’s successor, Michael Muirhead, said negotiations for staging the inaugural Caribbean Premier League were on track and that “might mean that the regional T20 cricket tournament might have to be done away with”.

Maxwell vows to keep his natural flair

Glenn Maxwell has been a valuable impact player for Victoria over the past two years, and now he has a chance to prove himself at international level

Brydon Coverdale15-Aug-2012If you mention the name Glenn Maxwell to the casual Australian cricket fan you can expect one of two responses. Either they’ll think they’ve heard him commentating on the radio (no, that’s Glenn Mitchell and Jim Maxwell), or they won’t know the name at all. But the more dedicated followers of Australia’s domestic cricket are well aware of Maxwell, and have no doubt kept an eye on his progress since February 9 last year. That was the night when Maxwell rewrote the record books with a 19-ball half-century for Victoria against Tasmania, the fastest fifty ever scored in Australia’s domestic one-day history. He demolished a pretty good attack featuring Ben Hilfenhaus and James Faulkner, and most impressively set Victoria on the path to victory having come to the crease with 66 runs needed at more than ten an over. It was his sixth one-day game for Victoria. He had not yet made his first-class debut.Soon, Maxwell will have the chance to prove his talent at international level. He has been in Darwin over the past week, training with the Australia squad as they prepare to fly out for a one-day and Twenty20 series against Pakistan in the UAE, and he is also expected to be part of the squad for the World T20 in Sri Lanka next month. And don’t expect anything different from Maxwell when he walks out in the national colours.”I won’t change too much when I play for Australia,” Maxwell told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ll still keep my natural flair but also rein it in when I need to and really be that rock if it’s needed. I’m looking forward to getting some opportunities in the batting order and looking forward to doing what the team needs from me in the right situations, whether that be quick runs or saving our arses.”Sometimes, as the chase against Tasmania showed, the two are one and the same. Not that he has coasted solely on that performance since then. A month later he made his first Sheffield Shield hundred, an unbeaten 103 from 118 balls against South Australia, and as a T20 player he has earned contracts from the Delhi Daredevils and Hampshire. In his third county match this year, his 66 not out from 32 balls delivered a crushing victory over Kent. And yet, it is for his offspin and athletic fielding as much as his batting that Maxwell has earned a call-up from Australia. His presence in the T20 squad can be seen as a like-for-like swap for Steven Smith, who has had his chances at international level without quite grasping his opportunities. Both are impact players, thrilling to watch but at times unpredictable. Australia’s T20 captain, George Bailey, is excited by what Maxwell can offer in the World T20 in Sri Lanka.”Maxy is someone who in terms of the 15 for the World Cup just comes with a really specific skill set that we really like,” Bailey said. “He’s performed well in the IPL, he’s been over playing in England, he’s played a lot of cricket. He’s an outstanding fielder, an outstanding athlete.”When he strikes the ball he’s one of the best strikers going around. He can win a game off his own bat. He’s really destructive, which we love to see. He’s flexible – he can bat close to the top or in the lower order. And he’s a handy offspin bowler, and that was an area where we felt we needed a bit more cover.”Maxwell, 23, will be one of three spinners in Australia’s squad for the Pakistan one-dayers and T20s, along with Smith and Xavier Doherty for the ODIs and Doherty and Brad Hogg for the T20s. A useful man to bowl through the middle overs, Maxwell is looking forward to working in what he expects to be favourable conditions in the UAE.”The good thing with the UAE and the conditions we’ll get there is that I probably can be considered a frontline bowler and be a real go-to option to bowl eight to ten overs in a one-day game,” he said. “It will depend on team balance and what they need, if they want to play extra quicks, I’m not sure if the conditions will suit that. I think they’ll play a few spinners, so I reckon I’ll have a good chance of playing a few games over there.”And if he shows what he showed that night in Hobart, especially when Australia move on to World T20 in Sri Lanka, even the most casual Australian cricket fan will know the name Glenn Maxwell. Because his namesake, Jim, will have just shouted it.

Dockrell can't force final day win

It ended in stalemate with two weary – and, ultimately, wary – teams shaking hands on a draw after 11 sessions of cut and thrust cricket and one of cat and mouse.

ScorecardGeorge Dockrell was disappointed he couldn’t bowl Somerset to victory•Getty ImagesIt ended in stalemate with two weary – and, ultimately, wary – teams shaking hands on a draw after 11 sessions of cut and thrust cricket and one of cat and mouse.A draw was not what either team anticipated for most of this terrific match and, for much of the final day, it seemed the least likely result. But with Surrey unable to maintain their early momentum in pursuit of an always daunting victory target of 305 and Somerset kept at bay for 34 overs by the skill and determination of seventh wicket pair Rory Hamilton-Brown and Gareth Batty, winning proved just out of the question. It went almost all the way, mind. Batty’s dismissal with 11.4 overs remaining rekindled Somerset’s interest – especially as a second new ball was coming into view. But there was to be no shifting Hamilton-Brown – or the loyal Jon Lewis, for that matter – and the visitors finally accepted the inevitable with two deliveries remaining. Surrey finished on 239 for 7, 66 runs away from what would have been a remarkable victory and with their young captain undefeated on 70, having faced 161 balls during an innings that spoke volumes about his growing maturity as a batsman.Hamilton-Brown was the final individual winner of a match full of outstanding performances. For Surrey, fast bowler Stuart Meaker was the star of the show, finishing Somerset’s second innings with the stunning career-best figures of 8 for 52 from 21 high octane and high quality overs. “He’s a phenomenal bowler who keeps doing it for us,” said Hamilton-Brown. “I just hope the England selectors don’t take notice!”They will not be able to avoid Meaker if he keeps bowling as he did here – and, no-one will be more delighted, of course, than Surrey’s captain if and when the call does come.As for Somerset, their first innings batting was just what a team missing injury victim Marcus Trescothick would have wanted with Arul Suppiah and James Hildreth hitting splendid centuries. And, while there was no hundred in this game for Nick Compton, the country’s leading run-scorer again showed his class.Today, though, most eyes were on the visitors’ 19-year-old left-arm spinner George Dockrell. The Dubliner bowled his team to victory on the final afternoon of the season’s opening match, against Middlesex, and he went mighty close to repeating the trick here.Coming onto to bowl immediately after lunch with Surrey going well and only one wicket down, Dockrell quickly settled into a wonderful rhythm. Even better, he soon struck three times in the space of 11 balls to remove Jason Roy, Jacques Rudolph and Zander de Bruyn through a combination of bounce, turn and flight.Suddenly, Somerset were in command. And they stayed that way as Peter Trego won lbw decisions against Tom Maynard and Chris Jordan to leave Surrey tottering at 148 for 6.On and on Dockrell bowled, twirling and toiling his way through 32 overs unchanged. But with Hamilton-Brown and Batty taking root, Somerset could not get the one more wicket they desperately wanted before tea.Thereafter, the cat and mouse began. Dockrell went over the wicket, bowling into the rough outside leg stump, to see whether Surrey would chance their arm, try for victory and do something silly. It was not to be – but the ploy meant that the runs dried up almost completely until a point was reached when Somerset could once again attack with impunity. It almost worked, too, with Dockrell getting rid of Batty with his arm ball. But neither the young spinner nor Vernon Philander could apply the killer blows.Given that Somerset are seriously depleted by injuries, and considering they lost the services of another bowler this afternoon when seamer Craig Meschede hurt his shoulder in holding the catch that removed De Bruyn, the visitors had good reason to feel more than satisfied with their performance here.Dockrell, though, was thinking about what might have been. “I’m a little bit disappointed, to be honest,” he said. “It was a spinning wicket and not to be able to bowl them out is a little disappointing. But as game, it had everything and either side could have won going into the final day.”As for Hamilton-Brown, he felt Surrey “lost the right to win the game on the first day” when they bowled poorly and set Somerset on their way to a first innings total of 512. And the run-chase? “Batting was always going to be tough on the last day and I thought going into it that if we came out with a draw then we would have got out of jail.”

Blues take points in rainy draw

New South Wales denied Queensland first-innings points in their match at the SCG, which finished in a severely rain-affected draw

ScorecardNew South Wales denied Queensland first-innings points in their match at the SCG, which finished in a severely rain-affected draw. The Bulls needed to score 270 to take two points from the game, but instead they will enter the final round of Sheffield Shield matches level on points with Victoria and Tasmania, and four shy of the competition leaders Western Australia.Joe Burns scored 90 for Queensland and was almost single-handedly keeping them in the contest as wickets fell at the other end. Trent Copeland picked up 4 for 69 but it was Scott Coyte who delivered the points to New South Wales when he collected the last two wickets in consecutive deliveries, the first of which was Burns caught at second slip.Steve Magoffin was then bowled first ball to give two points to the Blues, who cannot make the final. New South Wales started their second innings and reached 0 for 15 as the match petered out to a draw

Patterson four overwhelms Worcestershire

ScorecardAndrew Gale set up the easiest of Yorkshire victories at New Road and left Worcestershire stranded at the foot of Group A after their fourth defeat in five Clydesdale Bank 40 games.Steven Patterson took four for 28 in the Royals’ laboured progress to 155 for 9 and Gale continued his good form in the competition as Yorkshire eased home by seven wickets with 21 balls to spare. The Yorkshire captain made 56 and lifted his aggregate to 285 from five innings after sharing in successive half-century partnerships with fellow-left handers Gary Ballance and Adam Lyth.Rotherham-born left-arm spinner Shaaiq Choudhry secured Worcestershire’s first success when Ben Scott stumped Ballance for 27 and Moeen Ali’s off-spin accounted for Gale with a tumbling catch at mid-wicket by Jack Shantry.Yorkshire never had to rush and Lyth was able to bat within himself until he took an unnecessary risk in going for a second run which would have completed a half-century. He was comfortably beaten by Alexei Kervezee’s return from deep square leg.Worcestershire were hopelessly short of runs despite James Cameron’s third successive CB40 half-century and an eye-catching innings by 17-year-old schoolboy Aneesh Kapil. Kapil, who later bowled five overs at a lively pace, joined Cameron in a stand of 88 in 20 overs, which was all that stood between the home side and total collapse.Struggling at 30 for 4 after two wickets each for Yorkshire’s new-ball pair, Patterson and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, they folded again as soon as Kapil departed, lbw for 44 when pushing forward to the fourth delivery in a second spell by Adil Rashid.Kapil who played for Wolverhampton in the Birmingham League at the age of 13, was unfazed by registering a duck for his club team only 24 hours before he was called up for a competitive debut in the county side.A flamboyant stroke-maker, he hit four of the dozen fours that Worcestershire mustered in the entire innings, and fortunately for Yorkshire, a glaring let-off, when Hannon-Dalby put down a simple opportunity at short third man, cost them only two runs.Similarly a let-off for Cameron – Ballance spilling an awkward chance at mid-wicket – was quickly brushed over. One run later, the Zimbabwean-born left-hander fell for 51, driving to mid-off as Patterson struck twice in his second spell.Along the way, Cameron hoisted Rashid for a straight six but managed only two fours as Yorkshire, despite missing a contingent of first-teamers, took an unshakeable grip on what became a one-sided contest.
