Miller replaces Narine for West Indies

Nikita Miller, the left-arm spinner, has the task of filling Sunil Narine’s shoes at the World Cup after he was chosen as the replacement in West Indies’ squad

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jan-2015Nikita Miller, the left-arm spinner, has the task of filling Sunil Narine’s shoes at the World Cup after he was chosen as the replacement in West Indies’ squad.Narine withdrew from the tournament on Tuesday, little more than 48 hours after taking 6 for 9 in the Nagico Super50 final against Guyana, saying that his action still required more work after it was reported during last year’s Champions League T20.Miller, 32, has played 45 ODIs, the last of which came against England in March 2014 and has taken 40 wickets at 36.52. He is the second left-arm spinner in West Indies’ squad alongside Sulieman Benn. His call-up was approved by the ICC’s event technical committee, which has to rule on all replacement players which normally happen due to injury, and it was termed an “exceptional circumstance.”In the Nagico Super50, Miller claimed six wickets in four matches, along with a frugal economy rate of 2.32 across his 40 overs, but there were other spin options above him in the wicket-taker’s list which was topped by Narine. Veerasammy Permaul, another left-armer, claimed 11 wickets at 13.36 with an outstanding economy rate of 3.12.West Indies completed their tour of South Africa on Wednesday when they were heavily beaten in the final ODI at Supersport Park. Their opening World Cup match is against Ireland in Nelson on February 16.

Middlesex risk nothing against bottom club

Middlesex could not quell memories of declarations that went wrong as they set bottom-of-the-table Northants a target designed to ensure a dreary draw

As Shane Warne and Brian Lara locked horns, in the softest manner imaginable, netting against each other on the Nursery Ground, there was a possibility that onlookers would be lured away, into the ground proper. A potentially exciting climax was in store, surely a much worthier way to pass the time than a knockabout between legends.Sadly, they were probably better off watching the odd flash of diminished genius, as this encounter between Middlesex and Northamptonshire dulled into submission.Much of the unofficial chat around the day was that Middlesex would be looking for a lead of 300 and declaring after lunch. That came to pass, thanks largely to Eoin Morgan who, after a period of calm, brought out all his class and party tricks for 81.The equation was 304 in 56 overs. Northants were tempted to go for it – after all, what did they have to lose? But the wickets of Steven Peters and James Kettleborough, in the space of four overs deflated them. In the end, they settled for a draw – their second of the season. Peters was “happy enough”.”We’ve been on a pretty dreadful losing streak,” he said. “We had to stop the rot at some point and we’ve done that during this game.”We’ve just played better cricket, here, apart from the first morning where we didn’t bowl so well. Things like avoiding the follow-on were crucial; we could have found ourselves under-pressure again if we hadn’t done that.”Should Middlesex have offered a bigger carrot? Peters expressed surprise at the delay in Middlesex’s declaration. “Twenty or thirty runs less, with 10 overs more to bowl at us,” was his suggestion, especially given how the season has panned out for his side,At the half way stage of the season, Northants have just 42 points, without a single win. They were also a functioning batsman light after Rob Keogh dislocated and broke the same finger in his left hand. The finger itself may need to have a wire put through it to ensure it realigns and heals correctly. Had Northants’ pursuit of the follow-on target hit a snag, he was ready to don an extensive arm guard and a reinforced glove and tough it out. Were things to go awry for the visitors on the final afternoon, he would have done the same. But Peters also conceded the state of the pitch – a featherbed, with little to nothing for the spinners, despite it being the fourth day – along with the short boundary, meant that 270-odd in 70 overs would have been a risk.Middlesex skipper Chris Rogers confirmed that recent experiences of last innings chases had Middlesex thinking twice. A couple of weeks ago at Trent Bridge his side were on the receiving end of an assault from Alex Hales and then Rikki Wessels, as Nottinghamshire chased 385 in 74.5 overs. “Once bitten, twice shy, I think,” he said at the close. He stopped short of airing his frustrations about a track that provided the left arm spin of Ravi Patel with little encouragement. He did however bemoan the loss of impetus in key periods, most of which were within Middlesex’s control. One that was not, a period of 16 overs at the end of day two which was washed out, with Northants three down, no doubt helped the visitors. But it was the loss of power on day three with the ball that he felt hurt Middlesex’s chances of victory the most.”That really hurt us. At one stage I think we were certain to enforce the follow on. But Crooky played the innings of his life and all credit to him. We had an off-session. I don’t think we’ve bowled or fielded particularly well in this game.””It’s hard to criticise the bowlers because we’ve come across some pretty flat wickets. They’ve probably underperformed to their standards and they know that, but hopefully we can improve against Somerset.”Warwickshire’s victory over Nottinghamshire today means Middlesex are by no means out of the title race. However, the frustration of points dropped against a side that most teams in Division 1 have beaten, has Rogers frustrated and looking over his shoulder.”Everyone seems to be beating everyone at the moment so a few good results at the end of the season then you never know what might happen. In saying that, not beating Northants has cost us – these games are as crucial as beating the teams at the top of the ladder.”

Clarke insists on living in the moment

Michael Clarke has insisted he is living in the moment as Australia’s Ashes-winning captain rather than looking beyond the Boxing Day Test, because he knows how quickly perceptions can change as the result of success or failure. Clarke has endured an up-and-down 2013 that featured an awful tour of India, both on field and off, before a tumultuous Ashes tour of England on which the coach Mickey Arthur was sacked and the team lost 3-0.However, the Australians have turned their year around by regaining the Ashes within three Tests at home, ensuring Clarke’s legacy as an Ashes-winning captain. Australia’s challenges next year will include visiting South Africa to play the No.1 Test team in the world, before playing away against Pakistan, hosting India and then playing a World Cup at home.”I aim to win this Test match, probably because I’ve seen both sides of this game,” Clarke said. “I know how quickly you can be praised by the media and I also know how quickly you can be criticised. I’m not silly enough at 32 years of age to look past tomorrow to be honest because I know a couple of ducks and my job’s on the line or a couple of losses and I’m under the same pressure.”That has been my advice to a lot of players who come onto the international scene. It’s very easy to say don’t look too far ahead. But it’s so crucial in this world, and that’s where we sit as a team now. Two months ago, we were the worst Australian cricket team to ever tour India. Two months on, I think Ricky Ponting might have said, in an article the other day, it could be the greatest ever Ashes win by an Australian cricket team. So two months, things can change. I’ll make sure I stay focused on this Test match.”Clarke has previously said that he believed he might be dropped as captain if Australia failed to regain the Ashes in Australia, but instead his position is as secure as it ever has been. Clarke’s ongoing back injury could determine how long he continues to play but he said he was enough of a realist to know that continued success or failure of the Test team would determine his own captaincy future.”Until the selectors decide to drop me I guess, or I decide to retire,” he said of his captaincy tenure. “One or the other. Hopefully, retirement comes before getting dropped. That’s the sport we play. That’s the world we live in now. If you don’t perform well as an individual player, you’ll be dropped.”If the team doesn’t perform well then generally in our sport the captain’s accountable and he’ll probably be dropped. All I can do is continue to give my best. If somebody comes along who’s better than me or my best is no longer good enough then I’ll no longer be needed here.”The Australians are likely to enter the Test with the same XI from the WACA, which would be the first time in nine years that they would have played the same side for four consecutive Tests. James Faulkner remains with the squad despite fracturing his thumb in the WACA nets in the lead-up to the Perth Test, while Doug Bollinger and Nathan Coulter-Nile are also with the group as standby bowlers.”At this stage we’ve got the same 12 for this Test match and we’ll announce the 11 at the toss,” Clarke said. “But at this stage everyone seems fully fit. I haven’t looked at the wicket yet … I think it’s more about assessing the conditions tomorrow morning before we announce our 11.”

Mominul ton leads Bangladesh fightback

Mominul Haque and Tamim Iqbal exhibited patience and character to shore up Bangladesh, and by the end of the day secure a 114-run lead

The Report by Mohammad Isam24-Oct-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMominul Haque was part of a record third-wicket partnership for Bangladesh•AFPSmart stats

Mominul Haque became only the second Bangladesh batsman after Tamim Iqbal to hit centuries in two consecutive Tests. Tamim hit two hundreds in consecutive Tests against England in 2010.

Mominul’s 376 runs in this series are the highest by a Bangladesh batsman in a two-match Test series and the second highest ever by a Bangladesh batsman in any Test series. He is just four runs short of beating the 379 runs that Habibul Bashar scored in a three-Test series against Pakistan in 2003.

The 157-run partnership between Mominul and Tamim was Bangladesh’s highest for the third wicket in Tests.

Tamim faced 218 deliveries for his 70 runs in this innings; this was his slowest innings of fifty-plus runs in terms of strike-rate.

This was only the seventh instance of Bangladesh scoring 200 or more runs before the fall of their third wicket in a Test innings.

The unbeaten 57-run partnership between Mominul and Shakib Al Hasan was Bangladesh’s tenth fifty-plus partnership of the series. This equals Bangladesh’s record for the most fifty-plus partnership in a series. Before this, Bangladesh had ten fifty-plus partnership in a home-series against England in 2010.

Mominul Haque and Tamim Iqbal exhibited patience and character to shore up Bangladesh, and by the end of the day the home side had secured a handy 114-run lead in Mirpur. Mominul remained unbeaten on 126 after raising his second successive Test century. The pair chipped away at the 155-run deficit, and in the process laid to rest the unsettling trend of Bangladesh batsmen throwing their wickets away in the third innings of a Test match. Their record 157-run partnership for the third wicket ensured New Zealand were chasing the game at the end of the fourth day. Though the stand was broken in the final hour of play, Mominul will have the company of Shakib Al Hasan as Bangladesh head into the final day’s play.New Zealand made a promising start, but were unable to replicate their discipline from the first innings. Neil Wagner ran in hard and had both Anamul Haque and Marshall Ayub caught in the slips. On their first full day fielding under the Dhaka sun, he and his fellow seamers struggled to put pressure on the batsmen. The fielders were running low on energy as well, exemplified by Ish Sodhi’s keeling over on the boundary in the 66th over, and letting a cut from Mominul go through him.Tamim and Mominul hardly forced the issue, their interest fixed on orthodox Test match batting, extending the bowlers’ wait for a mistake. There were occasions when Mominul showcased his dominance from the first Test when he scored 181. New Zealand had not learned from Chittagong and continued to be either too short or too full, especially outside the off-stump and Mominul took full advantage, and became only the second batsman from Bangladesh to score back-to-back Test hundreds.More than his shots or the milestone, Mominul’s calm in trying conditions – exhibited best when he wasn’t flustered despite being stuck on 99 for ten deliveries – caught the eye. Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, packed the off side and asked his bowlers to bowl wide of the off stump, trying to prey on the batsman’s nerves. Mominul did play away from his body twice, but would not be tempted when McCullum ran up and had a word with him. He waited, and when the ball was pitched up, drove straight, to collect the four that gave him a second Test century. He found excellent support in Tamim, who played within himself and concentrated on preserving his wicket, as would be expected of a senior batsman. He struck just four boundaries in his 218-ball innings. This was his second slowest fifty and has never scored so many runs with so few boundaries. The last time it happened was in Colombo on a thick, grassy outfield in March. He was careful with balls outside off stump, reining in his usually extravagant cover drives, and collecting his runs by tucking the bowlers on the leg side when the bowlers strayed on his pads. He looked gutted when Ross Taylor leapt up and clung safely to a top-edged cut, lingering before making the walk back.In the morning, New Zealand could only add 18 runs to their overnight total as they were bowled out for 437. Ish Sodhi was slow to react to BJ Watling’s call for a single and Mominul Haque scored a direct hit to break the 93-run ninth wicket stand. There were no heroics from the tenth-wicket stand, as Boult was trapped leg before by Abdur Razzak two overs after the ninth wicket fell.Shakib was the better of the two left-arm spinners though, finishing with 5 for 103 while Razzak took two for 96 in 23 overs. Debutant seamer Al-Amin Hossain and Nasir Hossain took a wicket each but Sohag Gazi and Rubel Hossain remained wicketless.

– Primeiro pensamento é utilizá-lo no comando do ataque. Um jogador diferente, referência em campo. Passados os treinamentos, podemos optar por utilizá-lo em uma posição mais no meio de campo. Temos que ver os treinamentos, mas o primeiro pensamento é no ataque.

Big boys kick off big week

Big Picture

After 72 league matches – mismatches, in some cases – we’re into the final week of the IPL. The most important week. The week Chennai Super Kings have negotiated five times previously, with more success than failure; they’re the only team to progress past the league stage in every edition of the IPL so far, losing once in the semis, finishing runners-up twice (including last year), and winning the title in 2010 and 2011. Of the 10 playoff matches they’ve contested, they’ve won seven. They will go into the first qualifier knowing just how to win these big games, and with the cushion of having a second chance at making the final should they need it – both huge pluses. But, in Mumbai Indians, Super Kings face the only IPL line-up that is arguably even stronger than their own. While the two teams match-up on the batting front – both in terms of proven performers and power-hitting – Mumbai hold the clear edge in the bowling department. This season, especially, Mumbai’s bowlers have been lethal as a unit (as opposed to Lasith Malinga being the single biggest threat), with Mitchell Johnson swinging it at pace, Harbhajan Singh striking consistently while being economical, and Pragyan Ojha and Dhawal Kulkarni providing reliable support. They’ve already demolished Super Kings’ line-up once this season, rolling them for 79 – the tournament’s lowest total – at the Wankhede. Both teams are coming off losses after seemingly letting their guard down in inconsequential matches, but before being tripped up in Dharamsala Mumbai had five comfortable wins in a row. Super Kings, on the other hand, have an up-and-down record of late after posting an record-equalling seven consecutive IPL victories earlier in the tournament. That has prompted talk of them having peaked too early. Both teams have injury concerns to key players: Albie Morkel and Sachin Tendulkar. If Morkel is fit, he is likely to slot in as one of three overseas seam-bowling allrounders for Super Kings. If Tendulkar is fit, Mumbai will have to take a tough call – his replacement, Aditya Tare, has made two handy contributions, scoring rapidly as opener for a team that has got off to slow starts more often than not. Ambati Rayudu, who has 196 runs in 16 matches at 17.81, could be the one to miss out.

Form guide

Chennai Super Kings: LWLWL (most recent first)
Mumbai Indians: LWWWW

In the spotlight

M Vijay has had a woeful IPL 2013 so far. He came into the tournament having enjoyed much success in India’s home Test series against Australia, but his form has fallen away rapidly. More than his stats – 271 runs at 22.58 in 13 games – it has been the manner in which he has batted that has inspired very little confidence: he has swung and missed, scratched around, and hardly ever dominated the bowling. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday, Super Kings seemed more interested in allowing Vijay to bat his way back into form than going after the steep target in the eight-over shootout. The team, and Vijay, will be quietly hoping for a repeat of last year, when he followed up a forgettable league stage with 113 off 58 balls in the qualifiers.Lasith Malinga, by his standards, has had an average IPL. He has not been in contention for the purple cap at any point, and is only third on Mumbai Indians’ bowling charts in terms of wickets taken. But his record of 17 wickets at 21.05, with an economy rate of 6.71, is far from poor and it would be silly to underestimate him; it is still likely to be Malinga who causes the most telling damage if he gets those killer yorkers right.

Stats and trivia

  • Mumbai are comfortably ahead in the head-to-head against Super Kings, winning eight off 13 games. In their last six encounters, Super Kings have won only once. But, revealingly, Super Kings have won both the playoff games between the two
  • On Saturday, Malinga became the first bowler to 100 IPL wickets. Harbhajan Singh and Albie Morkel, with 73 wickets apiece, are joint-third behind Malinga and Kings XI’s Piyush Chawla for the most wickets taken for a single team in the IPL

Quotes

“I have been given the role of bowling in the Powerplays. But the only instruction I was given was to stick to whatever I have been doing so far, not think too much and try to remain as blank as I can. The coach and captain told me that whatever I have done on the cricket field so far has brought me into the IPL and the same will take me forward in my career.”
