Tony Palladino and Duanne Olivier dig in to deny Glamorgan

Glamorgan were denied their second win of the season by the Derbyshire tailenders at Swansea, where Tony Palladino and Duanne Olivier batted out the final 14.3 overs to earn a draw

ScorecardGlamorgan were denied their second win of the season by the Derbyshire tailenders at Swansea, where Tony Palladino – who faced 108 balls for his unbeaten 30 – and Duanne Olivier batted out the final 14.3 overs to earn the visitors a draw. When Derbyshire lost their eighth wicket, Glamorgan were favourites to win but, with stubborn resistance and some good fortune, the visitors held out.Glamorgan had resumed at their overnight score of 201 for 3, making rapid progress in the opening session as 107 runs were scored in the first hour at the rate of six runs an over. Kiran Carlson and Usman Khawaja shared a record partnership of 289 for the fourth wicket, the highest for any wicket for Glamorgan against Derbyshire, surpassing the previous record set by Mark Cosgrove and Michael Powell.Khawaja was to the first to reach his century, and he also became the first Glamorgan batsman to score successive hundreds in his fist two games for the club. Carlson reached his landmark shortly afterwards before racing to his next fifty from only 20 deliveries. Both batsmen surrendered their wickets in the quest for quick runs, and after David Lloyd had struck a brisk undefeated 43, Glamorgan declared to leave Derbyshire a target of 325 from a minimum of 63 overs. The visitors were soon in trouble as Harvey Hosein had his middle stump uprooted in Michael Hogan’s first over, then Ben Slater was lbw to Andrew Salter – also in his first over – with Derbyshire struggling at 18 for 2.Much depended on Derbyshire’s best batsmen Wayne Madsen, and he responded with some aggressive shots, notably against Salter, whom he struck for three fours in one over. However, Alex Hughes was the next to go when he edged Hogan, who had changed ends, to second slip.Derbyshire resumed after tea on 77 for 3, with 40 overs remaining, but there then followed a flurry of wickets. Ben Godleman was the first to go when he chipped Prem Sisodiya to midwicket, before the 19-year-old debutant took the vital wicket of Madsen, who was caught at backward point. When Matt Critchley became Hogan’s third victim, Derbyshire had slumped to 93 for 6, but Gary Wilson and Palladino provided stubborn resistance for 15.2 overs. Wilson faced 72 balls before he was lbw to Lukas Carey for 26, a decision he clearly didn’t agree with, as he stalked back to the pavilion.Hamidullah Qadri quickly followed for a pair in the game to give Hogan his fourth wicket – but there was further frustration for Glamorgan as Olivier joined Palladino to defend on a fourth-day pitch that offered little to the bowlers.

Phil Hay shares injury news he’s heard from Leeds on “exceptional” player

Leeds United have been given a timely boost ahead of their trip to Southampton this week and one player could make his long-awaited return from injury problems.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United?

In the lead-up to Leeds United's trip to St Mary's Stadium to face Southampton, Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has given an update on the future of out-of-favour star Helder Costa, who is still on the books at Elland Road despite much speculation swirling over his future.

Cited by Leeds Live, Farke detailed: "Nothing has changed. Helder's wish was for him to move. Everything is professional. We are working on a solution but he's not in our plans. I think Helder had a great career in English football and he's a good guy but he won't be involved."

The German coach also gave some insight into new signing Ilia Gruev's next steps at Elland Road, saying: "It's normal that you need time and with the language, he's fluent but you need to understand every football phrase. He starts for Bulgaria and he's a top player. Ampadu, Gray, Kamara have impressed, it's not like an urgent case. I much prefer this step-by-step situation. He is always ready to go, a humble guy. I'm more than happy."

In conversation with Sports Illustrated, Leeds United loanee Robin Koch, who is currently situated at Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, has spoken about his connection with his parent club despite leaving for Germany in the summer transfer window, saying: “In my three years at Leeds, I have felt very comfortable so far and have developed further as a footballer and as a person. The club really means a lot to me. But it was time for me to make another change in terms of sport."

Despite the upheaval at Elland Road over the last few months, Leeds are unbeaten in their last six Sky Bet Championship matches and have kept four clean sheets in succession.

What has Phil Hay said about Patrick Bamford?

Taking to social media platform X, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has given an update on the state of play regarding Patrick Bamford's fitness, stating: "Injury latest – Bamford is an option this weekend and expected to travel with the squad."

Leeds United boss Farke has elaborated on Bamford's availability, stating via BBC Sport: "Team training this week was massively beneficial for him and he's definitely also a topic for the squad on Saturday. It's much improved. Two weeks back in training, he's definitely a topic to travel."

On a side note, the German manager also confirmed that Wilfried Gnonto's surgery on an ankle knock has come and gone without a hitch and he will be back in contention after the next international break.

Bamford, who has previously been labelled as "sensational" by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, has been a major asset for Leeds United during his time at Elland Road despite some poor runs of form more recently, registering 51 goals and 21 assists in 151 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

Having yet to appear for Leeds this term, the Grantham-born ace will provide a boost to Farke, who will hope to lean on Bamford's goalscoring expertise in the English second-tier over the coming months.

Ancelotti compared Bellingham to KakaBellingham better 'without the ball'Kaka played for six years under AncelottiWHAT HAPPENED?

Ancelotti has been comparing AC Milan and Real Madrid star Kaka to current Los Blancos hero Jude Bellingham ahead of his team's Champions League tie with Union Berlin. The Italian has spoken about working with both players and claimed that the England international is better 'without the ball' than the legendary Brazilian.

AdvertisementWHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

Speaking to reporters, Ancelotti said, "Kaka got into the box a lot with the ball. He didn't have as much quality to get there without the ball, like Bellingham. We play without a fixed nine and in the box there is more space to finish. With Kaka the system was different, but in general, Kaka was very good on the ball and Bellingham's movement off the ball is very effective."

The former Brazil star played under the tutelage of the Italian manager for six years at AC Milan before the duo left the club in 2009. Together in Milan, they won multiple trophies including Serie A and Champions League titles. In 2009, Kaka headed to Real Madrid while Ancelotti joined Chelsea.

Spurs: BBC pundit drops claim on Tottenham interest in "exciting" player

BBC pundit Alan Hutton has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could sign an "exciting" player on loan in the January transfer window.

Who could Spurs sign in January?

The Lilywhites's exceptional start to the new season, we believe, may well be one or two injuries away from a total collapse. Spurs lack significant depth in some key areas of the squad, like centre-back, where both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have formed a brilliant partnership.

Only Eric Dier would come in if either one of Van de Ven or Romero were to become unavailable, as he is currently the only senior option. As a result, there are rumours the likes of Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, Juventus star Gleison Bremer, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba are candidates to join in January.

Brentford's Ivan Toney and in-form Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy have also been mentioned as possible replacements for star striker Harry Kane, despite the fact Spurs have been thriving in the Englishman's absence. A left-winger as an alternative to Dejan Kulusevski is also a possibility, with Tottenham reportedly eyeing up a move for Al-Ittihad forward Jota.

Jota transfer update

The Portuguese, who Postecoglou knows well from his time at Celtic, could well return to Europe from Saudi Arabia, and Spurs are credited with a serious interest in signing him, according to the recent Jota transfer news. He was a star player for Celtic, and it is believed that Spurs' manager would love a reunion with him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (90min).

Hutton, who features regularly for the BBC as a pundit, has told Football Insider that a loan deal for Jota could well be possible.

He will be on massive wages, you would have thought, but if he were to join on loan, Spurs would only have to pay part of that. Ange [Postecoglou] obviously knows him really well and knows what he is capable of.

I think that is a position where Tottenham probably could have a little bit of competition, the likes of Son and Kulusevski play on the outside, but I think he could add something to it. I think he has got the quality to play in the Premier League, he is at a good age, he is still getting better and it is always a little bit easier when you know the manager because you feel like you are onto a winning start already. What a player he could be.”

Hutton has always been a big fan of Jota, having also said this to Football Insider on the player back in 2022 during his time at Celtic.

"What he's done this season has been incredible, for him to come from his parent club, where he's not really been playing. Benfica are a big club in their own right, but to come to another club where there's a lot of pressure, to perform at such a young age, he's stood up to that task.

“Jota's that player fans want to see. He's exciting, he takes people on, he makes things happen, he scores goals and ticks all the boxes."

Wolves: Nuno struck gold on £12m star who was sold for 241% more

Wolverhampton Wanderers have endured a trialling time since the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo in 2021.

Three managers have had the unenviable task of attempting to eclipse the former's achievements but have failed dramatically.

The Portuguese manager took Wolves back to the Premier League and led them on a European journey, reaching the Europa League quarter-finals in the 2019/20 season, but those preceding him have led the Old Gold in the opposite direction.

Looking down the table rather than up, their plight at the bottom of the league table hasn't been helped by the Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions imposed onto the club as Wolves were forced into selling their prized assets before they were able to spend this summer.

While a grey cloud is hanging over Molineux currently, the arrival of Nuno in 2017 and the astute recruitment that followed, proved to be the catalyst for their recent success.

nuno-espirito-santo-wolves

With the backing of super agent Jorge Mendes, the Old Gold were able to attract some of Portugal's brightest young talents as Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves shocked the footballing world when they swapped Champions League football for the Championship.

Those two signings, in particular, demonstrated their ambitious intent, inspiring them to win the title at a canter.

How much did Wolves sign Diogo Jota for?

Signed on a season-long loan spell from Atletico Madrid in 2017, Jota quickly showcased his explosive finishing attributes, notching up an impressive ten goals before January as Wolves exercised the option to make his move a permanent one at the end of the season.

Securing the services of the 21-year-old for around £12m (€14m) would prove to be one of the best pieces of business the club has ever done.

The Portuguese, who possessed boundless amounts of talent, settled in quickly to the physical demands required in the Championship and during his stellar 2017/18 campaign – in which he recorded 23 goal contributions in 44 appearances – Jota admitted that he's adapted to his game to suit the second tier and is coping with the rough treatment.

He said: "I tried to adapt my game. In Portugal we don’t have a physical game like here."

With his ferocious physical attributes and phenomenal technical attributes coming to life in the second tier, Jota would soon translate those performance levels into the Premier League as Wolves qualified for Europe on their top-flight return while Jota chalked up nine goals and five assists in 33 appearances.

In the following campaign, his impact in the final third would slow down with only seven goals in 34, however, that drop in form didn't warn Jurgen Klopp away from his talents.

Prior to his move to Liverpool, the enigmatic German admitted in an interview with BBC Sport: "He's been on my list for two or three years" and Klopp's dream of working with the player would come true.

How much did Wolves sell Diogo Jota for?

Wolves desperately tried to hold on to Jota but when Liverpool came calling with a £41m bid in the summer of 2020, it was impossible for 33-cap international to turn down the opportunity to play with world-class players.

Seeing Jota depart would have been a bitter pill to swallow for Nuno and perhaps a contributing factor to their drop down the table, but the sale of the Portuguese did make them 241% increase on their initial £12m investment.

diogo-jota-liverpool-match-opinion-aston-villa-premier-league

Now an integral part of the Liverpool side aiming to challenge for the Premier League title, Klopp's admiration for the player has only grown stronger since he made the switch to Merseyside.

How good is Diogo Jota now?

Lauded as "exceptional" and "so valuable" to the Reds by his manager, Jota has used the competition from the likes of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez as fuel to shine in the face of adversity, exemplifying his talents through his ability to make a decisive impact despite restricted game time.

Diogo-Jota-celebrating

The £140k per-week star is brilliant at combining his movement in the box with explosive finishing to provide a consistent source of attacking output.

Indeed, according to FBref, he ranks in the top 1% against his positional peers across Europe for non-penalty goals, top 4% for assists, top 8% for touches in the attacking penalty box and despite his 5 foot 10 frame, uses his sublime jumping power to place within the top 7% for aerials won, all per 90.

Since Jota departed Wolves, it's no surprise to see their output in the final third take a dramatic tumble, and Liverpool's improve exponentially.

Adil Rashid could be persuaded back to Test cricket, says Trevor Bayliss

Could Adil Rashid be persuaded to make a return to Test cricket on the strength of his white-ball form? Don’t rule it out, is the message from Trevor Bayliss, after describing Rashid’s recent performances against Australia and India as “the best I’ve seen him bowl” since he took over as England’s head coach in 2015.Rashid claimed 20 wickets at 23.95 in England’s nine-match ODI campaign this summer (and a further five in four T20s), including arguably the collector’s item of his career to date – a big-ripping legbreak to bowl Virat Kohli in the series decider at Headingley, a ball that turned so sharply the India captain was left open-mouthed in astonishment. An unusually hot and dry summer has enhanced the conditions for spin bowling in England, and India have already responded by drafting the left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav into their Test squad after his own starring role in the limited-overs campaign. The chances of Rashid following suit would still appear to be slim, given that he retired from red-ball cricket earlier this year, saying that “his heart was not in it” after picking up ten wickets at 50 in seven Championship appearances last summer. He had not played a Test match for England since 2016-17, when he finished as England’s leading wicket-taker in India and Bangladesh with 30 scalps in seven Tests, and was overlooked for the home series against South Africa and West Indies, as well as the subsequent Ashes tour. However, England’s selection panel has been overhauled since the winter, and as Bayliss pointed out, the new National Selector Ed Smith set a precedent for Test selection on white-ball form with his very first squad.Against Pakistan in May, Jos Buttler returned to England’s Test team as a direct consequence of his hot run of form for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, and made an immediate impact with two half-centuries, including a match-defining 80 not out in the second Test at Headingley.Asked if England would urge Rashid to consider and follow Buttler’s example in Test cricket, Bayliss replied: “Possibly,” but added that the ball remained in the player’s court.”This year is probably the best we’ve seen him bowl,” Bayliss said of Rashid. “He’s bowled well in one-day cricket over the last few years but his control and his consistency this year has been top class and probably the best I’ve seen him bowl since I’ve been here.”That’s a decision he’s got to make,” he added. “I’m not sure whether Ed Smith’s had a chat with him or not. Could he get picked in the Test team on white-ball form? Well, it’s already been proven this year it’s happened once. So, look I’m sure he’ll be up for discussion definitely.”The desire to lure Rashid back to the fold is a reflection of England’s ongoing struggle to find a Test-class spinning option. In the wake of Moeen Ali’s loss of form during the Ashes, England blooded three new caps in their first four Tests in 2018, with Mason Crane and Jack Leach both suffering injuries that left Dom Bess as the man in possession by the end of the Pakistan series.Bess, 20, let no-one down with his attitude against Pakistan – not least with the bat, in making vital runs in both Tests, including a maiden fifty at Lord’s. However, he didn’t claim a wicket until the final day of the series, and Bayliss hinted that, all things being equal, he would likely defer to his senior Somerset colleague, Leach, whose broken thumb had given him his opportunity in the first place.”I think at this time of their careers that’s probably right,” said Bayliss.” I think Bess has got a lot of his career in front of him. But Leach was the one who was identified a couple of years ago and has done well over the last few seasons. I think if he shows any form at all, having a left-arm spinner in there would be of benefit.”A return for Moeen cannot be ruled out, however. Like Rashid, he finished the one-dayers flushed with confidence after out-performing his Indian counterparts in the decisive moments of the series, and with Ben Stokes set to miss the second Test due to his court case in Bristol, Moeen’s allround qualities may well bring him further into the frame.”He’s a confidence player and that’ll be a decision we have to make before that first Test. Do we take in two spinners for some of these games? Is it a bit drier this year and if we do we need to decide who those two are going to be.”The spin situation aside, Bayliss believes that England’s plans for the first Test, starting at Edgbaston on August 1, are fairly clear-cut. Dawid Malan’s timely runs for England Lions against India A ensure that the top-order that finished the series against Pakistan are all in a decent vein of form – not least the Test captain Joe Root, whose back-to-back hundreds against India were a timely statement of intent.”He was not necessarily out of form but he had a lack of runs I suppose in the last month or two,” said Bayliss. “Sometimes you get into a bit of a rut when the runs aren’t coming so to actually get that confidence back and play as he has done in the last two innings has been fantastic for Joe but also for the team as well.”
