Celtic news: Hoops secure deal for highly-rated in-demand Parkhead teenager

Celtic look to have secured the future of a bright young teenage star at Parkhead as Brendan Rodgers and his staff build for the long term in Glasgow's east end, according to reports.

Celtic latest updates: Lagerbielke stars, Yang disappointed

Celtic's stars are on international duty following a strong start to Scottish Premiership action, which has seen the Hoops climb to the summit of the league standings with seven draws and one loss from their opening eight encounters, enabling them to claim a seven-point lead over rivals Rangers in second.

Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke netted his first goal for Sweden during the break in a 3-1 victory over Moldova, as he rose high to power home from an excellent delivery from Jesper Karlsson.

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen after the victory, Lagerbielke reacted to what will be heralded as a landmark moment in his career, stating: "It’s a childhood dream to play here at Friends for the national team and then scoring a goal is a bonus. I’m very happy right now. I have scored a few goals in training and then there have been no goal gestures. When you get the chance, you have to try to take it. I think I made a good effort."

Hoops winger Yang Hyun-jun has been talking to Celtic TV about his start to life in Glasgow following his summer move from Gangwon FC and has reacted in honest fashion to his side's disappointing defeat at home to Lazio in the Champions League last week, as he said: "It was such an honour to play in the Champions League. It was a shame I couldn’t show all of my ability as I was feeling a bit nervous since it was such a big game."

Nevertheless, the South Korea international has shown signs of promise since moving cross-continent back in July and has registered one assist in his opening ten appearances for Celtic (Yang statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic contract update – Jacob Donnelly

According to a recent Celtic contract update from The Glasgow Times, Hoops youngster Jacob Donnelly has signed a pre-contract at the Scottish champions ahead of penning a three-year deal at Parkhead next summer on professional terms.

The report states that Celtic have managed to fend off competition from several clubs in England to tie down the midfielder, who will join the likes of Mitchel Frame by committing his future to the Hoops for the foreseeable future with the hope of being able to break into the first-team squad.

Offering up chances for young players to break through at Celtic is not something boss Rodgers is immune to at Parkhead when the opportunity presents itself.

Despite not seeing much evidence of that yet, more than likely due to the combination of a pressure-cooker environment and win-or-bust culture in Glasgow, Rodgers was responsible for introducing the likes of Anthony Ralston and Mikey Johnston to the senior picture during his first spell north of the border.

Rocco Vata, MacKenzie Carse and Kyle Ure are among other highly-rated talents at Celtic who look close to making a sustained breakthrough under Rodgers, and it will be intriguing to see who is given the opportunity to step up and stake their claim for a first-team berth in the near future.

Quadrangular A team series moved out of Vijayawada

It is understood that Bengaluru will host the rescheduled tournament with the league fixtures slated for August 23, 25 and 27

Shashank Kishore in Vijayawada19-Aug-2018The Quadrangular series between the A teams of India, Australia and South Africa has been shifted out of Vijayawada due to incessant rains. The change was confirmed by an Andhra Cricket Association official soon after four games were washed out without a ball bowled. ESPNcricinfo understands Bengaluru will now host the rescheduled tournament with the league fixtures slated for August 23, 25 and 27. The final will be played on August 29.Matches to be televised will likely be held at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, while the others are expected to take place at KSCA’s Alur facility on the outskirts of the city. Alur hosted the recently concluded second four-day Test between India A and South Africa A earlier this month. The ACA ground in Mulapadu, which was to host the fixtures, does not have a state-of-the-art drainage facility. Vijayawada has received intermittent rain over the past week. This forced the first set of matches to be abandoned on Friday despite there not being any rain for more than 24 hours in the build-up to the start. The ACA was confident of preparing the surface and outfield for Sunday, provided there was no rain, but there was a thunderstorm on Saturday evening. This resulted in water seepage that caused significant damage to the pitch and outfield. Sunday dawned with continuous drizzle, and although both teams made it out to the ground, they had to return to their hotel not long after making the hour-long trip. That the one indoor facility in Mangalagiri is an hour’s drive from Vijayawada has added to the players’ frustration, leaving them with little or no opportunities for match practice in the five days they’ve been in the city. They have been forced to remain indoors or undertake fitness sessions at a private gym.

Newcastle could limit the threat of Neto with "quality" teen gem

Newcastle United are back in action this evening as the Magpies face a trip to Molineux to challenge Wolves on matchweek ten of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Eddie Howe’s side will go into the fixture full of confidence based on their league form, travelling to the Midlands on a five-game unbeaten streak. However, Gary O’Neil’s side won't be easy to beat.

Similarly to this evening’s visitors, Wolves have hit form of late, with the Old Gold unbeaten in their previous four games, including a statement victory over Manchester City at Molineux late last month.

Newcastle United team news against Wolves

Despite building confidence in the Premier League, Newcastle faced defeat in the Champions League earlier this week, as Borussia Dortmund left St James’ Park as 1-0 winners, after a lacklustre display from the Geordies.

The result wasn’t the only negative for Howe to dissect from the defeat, as the Englishman saw his squad depleted due to two new injuries sustained on the night, with Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy forced to prematurely withdraw.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of the Wolves fixture, Howe revealed that Isak suffered a groin injury during the fixture that will leave him out of contention for this evening’s game.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie relayed the extent of Murphy’s injury, which has been revealed as a shoulder dislocation that may require surgery, while away from the midweek woes, Elliot Anderson will be out for eight weeks with a back injury.

It’s trialling times for Newcastle on the injury front, but with a trip to Wolves on the horizon, there are other concerns that Howe will have to consider in order to get a result from the Midlands side.

The stats that show that Lewis Hall should start against Wolves

When assessing the threat of Wolves, it’s impossible to divert around the presence of winger Pedro Neto, who has had a flying start to the 2023/24 campaign with seven goal contributions from nine appearances.

The Portuguese whiz leads the assists chart alongside Kieran Trippier with six so far, though his ability to create is the least of Newcastle’s issues, with his pace and direct approach on the flank a terrorising scenario for Dan Burn to prepare for.

As per FBref, Neto averages 2.22 successful take-ons per 90 this season, and is rapidly quick, as highlighted by the havoc he consistently causes on the wing for defenders to attempt to limit.

While Burn is a strong figure in terms of his ability to win the ball, the Englishman is far from blessed with pace, which could prompt Howe to make a swift reshuffle at the back to pardon the danger of Wolves’ star man.

Once lauded as “quality” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Newcastle’s summer capture, Lewis Hall, could have the traits to match the presence of Neto this evening.

Identified as a player that can bring “dynamism” and “pace” by scouting site Breaking the Lines, Hall is the faster of the Geordies’ two identifiable left-backs, while his talents span way beyond his speed.

jesper-lindstrom-lewis-hall-newcastle-united-transfer-news-premier-league

Last season, the 19-year-old was given a chance to show his worth at Chelsea in the Premier League, during which he showcased his defensive strengths by averaging 2.6 tackles per game and a win rate of 59% of his total duels, via Sofascore.

The teen is a defender capable of eliminating danger and is a competent and combative force at the back, and also brings an added threat on the overlap, to where he averaged 1.7 key passes per game for the Blues last term.

In deploying Hall over Burn, Howe could spare his first-choice left-back the embarrassment of chasing Neto for 90 minutes, giving the loanee a chance to show his worth at Molineux.

Arsenal: BBC pundit suggests "amazing" player should join for one reason

BBC pundit Stewart Downing has suggested that an "amazing" player should join Arsenal for one key reason.

Who will Arsenal sign in January?

After sealing summer deals for club-record signing Declan Rice, defender Jurrien Timber, forward Kai Havertz and goalkeeper David Raya, who all cost north of £200 million in total, it is believed that the Gunners could be busy yet again in January. Indeed, reports in the media have suggested that a new striker could well be in the offing, with the likes of Brentford star Ivan Toney, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez all linked in the last month.

Arsenal have just Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah to turn to as natural striking options, with Havertz brought in as a sort-of makeshift option from Chelsea in the summer. However, the German has scored just one league goal for Arteta so far. Injuries to both Nketiah or Jesus would arguably spel trouble for Arsenal, prompting some calls for them to sign a centre-forward.

Club legend Emmanuel Petit, speaking before deadline day, even urged them to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak as an alternative to Jesus and Nketiah.

"Alexander Isak is tall, aggressive and has great technique," Petit said (via The Mirror). "He wants to score every time he gets the ball but he needs to be more precise in his game. Physically and technically, he has a huge presence on the pitch.

"If one day someone can tell me that he plays like Thierry Henry, maybe I will believe them, but for the moment it’s really too soon to say that. He's a good striker and he's someone that Arsenal would be very happy to have because he brings different qualities.

"Jesus and Nketiah play in a similar way, they are different in terms of movement, but physically, technically and in their finishing they are not far apart."

As well as a new striker, Arsenal have been tipped to move for Wolves winger Pedro Neto in 2024.

Arsenal – Ivan Toney update

Speaking on the future of Toney, who has been centre to claims he's likely to depart Brentford in the new year, BBC pundit Downing has suggested to the broadcaster that he should join Arsenal to get the England international preference over Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

“When I was at Middlesbrough with Capello and doing alright, he was a fan of how I played,” said Downing to Five Live, as transcribed by HITC.

“He actually made a straight point to me, ‘you need to leave and play for a team that is further up the league. Europa League or Champions League’. I actually laughed at him and thought ‘that’s easier said than done. I am trying. How am I going to get them clubs?’ I know it does play a big part. If Ivan Toney does come back and say he goes to Arsenal, starts playing Champions League, winning the Premier League or threatening every season.

“Then Gareth (Southgate) will be under pressure to start him ahead of Ollie (Watkins). 100% – I am sure Ollie knows that as well. If he continues to score goals and gets Villa into them Champions League or Europa League spots, then he gives himself a hell of a chance.”

The future battle between Toney and Watkins will be an interesting one, especially considering Toney should be in top form when he returns from his ban. Called "amazing" by Thomas Frank, the striker netted 20 league goals last season.

Spurs: Johan Lange is a big fan of "special" star, Tottenham may go for him

Tottenham's incoming new sporting director Johan Lange is said to absolutely love one player, and Spurs could go for him in January as a result.

Will Spurs sign anyone in January?

Lange will commence his role under Chief Football Officer Scott Munn on November 1, but reports suggest that the Lilywhites have already been busy plotting ways to strengthen Ange Postecoglou's ranks at Spurs. Having failed to bring in a second centre-back after Micky van de Ven in the summer, Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, Juventus star Gleison Bremer, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba are all reported transfer targets to reinforce Postecoglou's backline.

As well as this, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could well depart north London amid a lack of starting roles, meaning Spurs could sign a replacement for the Dane. Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, who has since become a regular starter for Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge, has been named as one of Tottenham's rumoured transfer targets to succeed Hojbjerg.

Despite their free-scoring start to the season, Tottenham may also look to bring in a new striker to replace Harry Kane once 2024 comes around; leading to reported interest in the likes of Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord) and Ivan Toney (Brentford).

Kalvin Phillips transfer update

Another player who Spurs have been linked with as a potential replacement for Hojbjerg is Man City and England international star Kalvin Phillips. On a reported £150,000-per-week (SpotRac), the former Leeds star has found life difficult at Eastlands since his multi-million pound move in 2022. He was recently handed a couple of more chances by Pep Guardiola, who praised Phillips after a second-half performance against Nottingham Forest.

England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

“He played really good today," said Guardiola after City's 2-0 win

"For the type of game that we needed, defensively and keeping the ball and run, he was amazing."

However, the return of Rodri from suspension looks set to relegate Phillips to the side once again, with January coming as a possible way out. Juventus and Newcastle are said to be admirers of his, while Spurs' incoming transfer chief Lange is also a "big fan". As a result, if Hojbjerg departs, Spurs could well make a move. That is according to reliable journalist Matt Law of The Telegraph, who shared an important update on Phillips' future at City.

Former Leeds midfielder Andrew Hughes, speaking to The Athletic, once called him a "very special" player.

"He’s one-paced but he’s made that work for him and, in the end, it doesn’t matter. I’ve been lucky enough to watch training at Leeds and you see it with the midfielders — out early before the main sessions and making sure whichever team they’re going to be playing, they know where to take the ball and where to pass the ball. It’s about intelligence.

"The only way to get someone who can cover and do the same job perfectly is to spend £50 million, at least, that’s what a player like him costs. Rather than talking about how other players match up, you just have to accept he’s very special.”

Eoin Morgan hopes England learn from pressure of decider

The England captain said he isn’t a fan of bilateral one-day series because they are often decided before the end

Andrew McGlashan15-Jul-20182:00

Are England or India favourites to win the series?

Eoin Morgan hopes the deciding one-day international against India at Headingley will go some way to replicating the winner-takes-all pressure of next year’s World Cup.England levelled the one-day series with a convincing 86-run victory at Lord’s, having been comprehensively beaten in the opening match at Trent Bridge.Morgan questioned the value of bilateral series because it can be difficult to manufacture the sort of situations that can occur in tournament play. So the match on Tuesday is the closest he will get to a scenario that could develop at the back-end of the round-robin stage of the World Cup – should England still need victories to quality – and certainly in the semi-finals and final if they reach that far.Last year, England stumbled in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy, when they were beaten by Pakistan in Cardiff, having progressed out of their group unbeaten.”I am not a huge fan of bilateral series – having a game like this is crucial for us,” Morgan said. “I prefer a tri-series and the context. Every game brings something different with significance on it.”England have only played one ODI tri-series, a breed of competition that has largely died away since the early 2000s, in the last 12 years – involving Australia and India ahead of the 2015 World Cup.Therefore, if teams want to test themselves with plenty on the line, they need to make the most of deciding matches in bilateral cricket when they occur.Since the 2015 World Cup, after which England began their climb up the one-day rankings – they are now No. 1, a position they will retain regardless of this series result due to their victory at Lord’s – six series that have involved them have gone to a final match with the prize undecided (although against Pakistan in the UAE they were 2-1 up ahead of the final match). In five series that have been locked at either 1-1 or 2-2 going into a deciding match, England have won three and lost two. Their most recent experience was successful, beating New Zealand by eight wickets in Christchurch earlier this year to take that series 3-2. The defeats in deciders came earlier in the development of this side, against Australia in 2015 and South Africa in 2016.This series against India is one of the tougher challenges England’s powerhouse one-day side has faced over the last couple of years and is being viewed as a true test of their tag as World Cup favourites. Morgan acknowledged that being able to beat them would carry considerable weight.”They are a really strong side, as we saw in periods [at Lord’s], and particularly at Trent Bridge, so to beat them in series would be quite significant – very significant.”As they did in the T20 series, England learned quickly from a poor display against Kuldeep Yadav in the opening match, when he claimed 6 for 25. Although he took three wickets at Lord’s, he conceded 68 runs, as Joe Root scored an excellent century to anchor the innings after Morgan went against type by batting first.”We started better against him,” Morgan said. “And the more we face him, the easier he got to pick. But you still have to play him well. I thought Joe was quite significant in that – his rotation of strike, his calm head.”We emphasised the need to be clear on your plan and then sticking to it, and that’s what we did. Our plans are always about positive thinking, and we didn’t veer away from that.”England have called James Vince into their squad for the deciding match, with Dawid Malan and Sam Curran released to play for England Lions against India A at New Road.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester City forward Robinho has been jailed for nine years after being ordered to serve the prison sentence in Brazil, having been found guilty in an Italian court in 2017. Brazil coach Dorival Junior, who is currently in England preparing for a friendly at Wembley, has spoken out about the situation and attracted criticism for his comments about the former forward.

    WHAT DORIVAL JUNIOR SAID

He said: "As the coach of the national team, I have an obligation to speak out. First, I think it's a very delicate situation. Robinho was my player [at Santos in 2010], a fantastic person, such a professional … I didn't have the opportunity to work with Daniel [Alves], but we all know his story within football. It's a difficult time for us to express any and all situations.

"First, I think about the families of the people involved. Especially the victims involved in these episodes, which happen in our country and around the world and which, suddenly, are not addressed. They are hushed up because people don't have a voice. If there was a type of crime that was proven, it must be penalized.

"As much as it hurts my heart to talk about this, about a person with whom I had an exceptional relationship, I care much more for the victims, for the families, as well as for their families too. I know how painful it must have been for each of them to go through a moment like this.

"I don't wish this on anyone, I feel for everything they will go through from then on in their lives, everyone who is involved, what I can do is help them with prayers, nothing more."

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT DORIVAL JUNIOR

Brazil midfielder Ary Borges responds to the coach's words on social media: “This is unbelievable, it really is."

Palmeiras president Leila Pereira has also spoken out about how the media has handled the rape convictions of Robinho and Dani Alves. She told UOL: "Nobody says anything, but I, as a woman here at the head of the delegation, have to take a stand on the cases of Robinho and Daniel Alves. It's a slap in the face for all of us women, especially the case of Daniel Alves, who paid for (his) freedom. It is important for me to position myself. Each case of impunity is the seed of the next crime."

Commentator Natalia Lara applauded Pereira's speech and also criticised Dorival's words in an interview with Sport TV. She said: "Dorival Junior’s speech hurts my heart. Because there is no 'if'. Robinho was sentenced to 9 years in prison. There is no 'if', Dorival. He was convicted. Brazilian football needs to stop being lax and talking about rape. Because it hurts the victim's skin. It doesn't hurt for you, Dorival. It hurts for us, it's a slap in the face, as Leila Pereira so rightly said. Yes, she has the courage to speak, something you didn’t have.”

Brazil midfielder Kerolin also spoke out in a post on X: "How long will women continue to suffer these and other types of crimes and the people who commit them go unharmed?!?!"

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Robinho's rape conviction follows that of former Brazil international Dani Alves. The ex-Barcelona star was sentenced to four years and six months in jail in February 2024 after being found guilty of raping a woman in a nightclub. Alves has appealed the conviction and will be released if he can pay bail of €1m (£853,000/$108m) and give up his passports.
