Spurs must ditch a star who’s earning more than Porro and Van de Ven

Ange Postecoglou’s first summer transfer window as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur saw them spend a hefty £212.3m, although they brought in some key players who have enhanced the squad.

They added four first-team players, as well as singing Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro on permanent deals after the duo were on loan at Spurs already.

Brennan Johnson was the most expensive deal the Lillywhites completed. They signed the Welshman on transfer deadline day for £47.5m from Nottingham Forest, becoming his boyhood club’s record sale.

They also signed James Maddison from Leicester City for a fee of £40m. He has had a successful season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, despite a tough time in recent weeks, scoring four and registering eight assists in the Premier League.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

Not only that, Spurs shored up their backline in the summer, completing the signing of Mickey van de Ven from Wolfsburg for a fee of £34.5m, and Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli for £17.2m.

With the 2024 summer transfer window around the corner, it gives Spurs the chance to refresh their squad further and push for a Champions League spot next season.

However, they might well also look to move on some of their current players, with one midfielder in particular seemingly set to leave the club.

What the future holds for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

The player in question here is Denmark international Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The 28-year-old midfielder has just over a year left on his current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and could depart this summer.

Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg reported in January that he could depart, with Hojbjerg being linked with a winter move away from North London. Juventus were thought to be one of the sides interested, and former club Bayern Munich also rumoured to be keen on the deal.

Caught Offside have more recently suggested that a deal for Hojbjerg could cost potential suitors a fee of around £20m. It's stated other Serie A clubs AC Milan and Napoli, as well as Atletico Madrid, are interested in bringing the Dane into their club.

Hojbjerg has struggled for consistent game time this season under Postecoglou. The 28-year-old has played 34 times in the Premier League. However, according to Sofascore, he has started just seven fixtures and plays an average of 36 minutes per game.

Pierre Hojbjerg.

Unsurprisingly, the Denmark international wants to play more football next season, hence his potential move away from Spurs. However, his large wage could create an issue when finding a new club.

Hojbjerg's salary at Spurs in 2024

Indeed, the 28-year-old midfielder is earning more money than some of Spurs’ biggest stars. Whilst he doesn't earn close to the £190k-per-week that captain Son Heung-min earns, or the £170k-per-week Maddison is on, he is actually one of the highest earners at the club, according to Capology.

Aside from Son and Maddison, there are just three players who earn more than Hojbjerg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; Timo Werner and Cristian Romero, who are both on £165k-per-week, and Kulusevski, who earns £110k-per-week.

Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz in action with Tottenham Hotspur'sPierre-EmileHojbjerg

Hojbjerg currently earns a weekly salary of £100k at Spurs, which is more than several of their biggest stars, including Pedro Porro, who earns £75k and Micky Van de Ven, who is on just £50k.

That's particularly poignant given their recent displays, both Porro and Van de Ven scoring in Tottenham's win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Should Spurs wish to shift Hojbjerg this summer, it could be a problem finding a club willing to match the £100k he earns. It may well be the case that the player needs to take a pay cut in order to find a permanent move this summer.

It is certainly in Spurs’ interest to sell the Dane. The £20m they want for him this year can be reinvested into another midfielder to strengthen in the centre of the park. They have been linked with Amadou Onana in a £45m move.

Leeds demanding millions more than market value to sell £35k-p/w loan star

Leeds United and their owners are playing hardball over the permanent sale of one of their loanees this summer, it has emerged.

Farke's side in hunt for promotion

Daniel Farke's Leeds side are two games away from promotion out of the Championship and back into the top flight, with a play-off semi-final second leg against Norwich City to come before a potential showdown at Wembley, where they will take on one of Southampton or West Brom.

They will have to make history to do so though, with Leeds never having been promoted via the play-offs, and their last failure coming against Derby County in 2019, though they secured automatic promotion the following season.

Their uncertainty makes squad planning difficult, a task made all the more tricky by the recent losses announced by the club, which amount to £33.7m, while they also have significant transfer fees still due to clubs. But now, reports suggest that they are looking to maximise what they have already, and won't be taken for a ride by clubs looking for cheap deals.

Leeds bargaining over loanee

Leeds will not be letting players leave on the cheap this summer if they can help it, as Borussia Monchengladbach are finding out. The German outfit are where Maximilian Wober has spent this season, after leaving Elland Road on loan six months after arriving at the club.

He has appeared 25 times in the German top flight, contributing two goals and three assists, and the powers that be at the club would like to keep him there on a permanent basis after an impressive campaign.

However, they are running into trouble because no option or obligation to buy the Austrian was included in the loan deal, which means that his performances have only made it more difficult for them to sign him.

According to Bild, it is now likely that his final game for the club will come against Stuttgart, because Leeds are demanding 17m euros (£14.5m) to make the deal permanent, 3m euros more than his valuation as per Transfermarkt.

For their part, 'Gladbach are only willing to part with 9m euros to make the deal permanent, but Leeds are hoping that a strong European Championship for the defender will see interest increase and incite a bidding war for the defender, who has three years left to run on his £35,000 a week contract at Elland Road.

Borrusia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus admitted keeping Wober would be a struggle: “We are having discussions with everyone involved, of course we would like to keep Max with us. But the demands are extremely high.”

Wober could be a useful option for Daniel Farke if Leeds makes it back into the Premier League. Should they remain in the Championship, the 49ers will be hoping to make a tidy profit on the defender, already making it clear they will not be made fools out of when it comes to their horde of loanees.

CPL 2020: Kieron Pollard's 28-ball 72 extends Trinbago Knight Riders' unbeaten run

T20 has evolved to the extent that teams now back themselves to chase two runs a ball over the last eight – or even last ten – overs of matches. Those sorts of chases, however, usually involve flat pitches and line-ups packed with hitting talent. On Saturday, Trinbago Knight Riders probably wouldn’t have backed themselves when Kieron Pollard walked to the crease on a slow Queen’s Park Oval pitch with 87 runs needed from 44 balls, and five wickets in hand. This was a Knight Riders line-up that lacked Sunil Narine at the top and Dwayne Bravo in the middle. This was a pitch on which Lendl Simmons, the batsman at the other end when Pollard came in, had hit three sixes but no other boundaries while scoring 31 off 26 balls.Simmons fell soon after Pollard came in, in the 15th over, for 32 off 29. That over, bowled by Mitchell Santner, and the 16th, bowled by Rashid Khan, brought the Knight Riders only six runs in total. That left them 66 to get off 24 balls.Only a handful of players are capable of pulling off such a task, and Pollard has shown repeatedly – despite having been written off on multiple occasions – that he’s one of them. This, given the modest support available to him from the other end, would be one of his best knocks if he could pull it off, and he did, laying waste to the Tridents’ death bowlers as if he were a 16-year-old ringer in an Under-12s game, launching nine massive sixes in a 28-ball 72 to ensure the Knight Riders stretched their perfect start to the tournament into their sixth game. He made 72 off 28 balls. When Pollard was at the crease, the batsmen at the other end, plus extras, combined to score 7 off 12 balls.Kieron Pollard clubs one over long-on•Randy Brooks – CPL T20 / Getty

Patriots’ allrounders come to the foreBefore Pollard’s innings, a different T20 game took place, and it would be prudent to note at the outset that Pollard played a key role in that game too. With Dwayne Bravo absent, he assumed the role of slower-ball specialist, mixing up his pace, changing his angles constantly – going over and around the wicket every alternate ball against the left-handers – sending down four overs – including the 16th and 20th of the Tridents’ innings – and conceding only 27 runs. That apart, though, the most influential performers were the Tridents’ allrounders. They’d begun sluggishly with the bat, but Ashley Nurse, Rashid and Santner – spin bowlers primarily, but excellent hitters at the death too – clattered a combined 39 off 18 balls to give them a more than fighting total of 148.Jason Holder, the Tridents’ premier allrounder, had failed with the bat, but he got his short ball to behave unpredictably off the pitch and delivered a double-wicket maiden in the second over of the chase. Rashid then bowled a single-wicket maiden, and the Knight Riders ended their Powerplay 27 for 3. Santner, for his part, used his seam-up variation cleverly and kept forcing the batsmen to hit the ball where he wanted them to hit it.Nurse had made an important contribution with the bat, but his one over went for 13, with Simmons launching two half-volleys for big sixes. When not handed freebies on a platter, though, Simmons struggled to score quickly, and with the rest of the top order utterly failing to get going, the Tridents were soon in a seemingly unassailable position. Seemingly.Enter PollardHayden Walsh, the Patriots’ fourth spinner, was also having a pretty good game. When he dismissed Akeal Hosein in the 13th over, his figures read 2.4-0-12-1. Not bad at all. But his first ball to Pollard was a sign of what was to come. It may have been a pretty good wrong’un to most other batsmen, but Pollard’s reach allows spinners only the smallest margin for error, and he slog-swept it for an emphatic first-ball six. When the 17th over began, Pollard had only hit two sixes – the other a ridiculously effortless loft over long-off, off Rashid – in 13 balls. By the time it ended, he had hit four more. With each, Pollard made the young legspinner doubt himself a little more, and by the time the over ended he was firing in quickish darts with little spin on them. That isn’t to say he would have held Pollard back if he’d bowled differently, of course. The contest now took on an entirely different complexion, and the next over brought the Knight Riders the sort of luck a winning team often needs in T20. Sikandar Raza had sacrificed his wicket off the first ball, just to get Pollard on strike, but only two runs came off the next three balls as Raymon Reifer tied Pollard and Khary Pierre down with his left-arm angle and changes of pace. The fifth ball was a pretty good ball too, a slower bouncer, but a top-edge got Pollard four runs. Then came a leg-side swipe off a blockhole ball on the stumps – it was a bit of a miscue, off the inside half of the bat, but all that mattered was that it sped away for four. It also brought up Pollard’s fifty, off 22 balls. The Knight Riders needed 31 now, off 12 balls, and there was nothing fortuitous about Pollard’s next two significant interventions. Holder had set a field for the wide yorker, and he got his line right and his length almost right – but almost isn’t enough sometimes. He erred in both line and length next ball, and Pollard launched him for another big straight six. There was still one final twist, of course. Pollard lifted the first ball of the final over beyond the long-on boundary to bring the equation down to 9 off 5, but was run out next ball, Holder firing in a spectacular throw – no bounce, straight into the keeper’s gloves – from long-on, to catch him short of retaining the strike. It could have gone either way, but the big error came from the bowler, Reifer, who sent down a wide and possibly high full-toss with 7 needed off 3. Pierre slashed it over point for six, and all but sealed a wildly improbable win.

English clubs to grill WebbPGMOL chief to be called on over poor refereeing Arsenal and Man City left furious after Sunday's clashWHAT HAPPENED?

Premier League referees have come under scrutiny after just five rounds of the league in the current 2024/25 campaign due to some controversial decisions that have left top English clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City angry. Per The Times, the clubs are now planning to call on Professional Game Match Officials Ltd chief Howard Webb and vent out their frustrations.

The report further claimed that both Arsenal and Manchester City are furious with Michael Oliver's way of conducting the mega Premier League clash between the two title rivals at Etihad on Sunday. While Arsenal are unhappy with Oliver's decision to show a second yellow card and send off Leandro Trossard in the first half for kicking the ball, after Jeremy Doku got away without punishment for doing a similar thing earlier, the Cityzens were left astonished by the official in the buildup to Riccardo Calafiori's equaliser.

DID YOU KNOW?

Earlier PGMOL had stopped Anthony Taylor from refereeing in any of the 10 matches that were held last weekend after officiating in Chelsea's feisty win at Bournemouth where Taylor had handed a Premier League record 14 yellow cards. The official was subject to severe social media abuse in the wake of the match.

The Premier League will be back in action this weekend with Newcastle United kicking off the game week with a blockbuster clash against reigning champions Manchester City on Saturday.

Celtic could save millions by unleashing "exceptional" 6 ft 2 colossus

Celtic may look to use the upcoming summer transfer window to bolster their playing squad with new signings ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Hoops won the domestic double of the Scottish Premiership and the SFA Cup this season but they could go in search of more silverware next term.

Brendan Rodgers may want to land a domestic treble, adding the League Cup on top of the other two trophies, as well as more success in Europe.

Celtic are already reportedly looking at transfer targets to potentially arrive at Parkhead this summer, and are said to have an interest in a central midfielder.

Celtic's interest in £4m midfielder

The Daily Express' Charlie Gordon recently claimed that the Scottish giants hold an interest in Lausanne central midfielder Alvyn Sanches this summer.

Stoke City and Coventry City, from the English Championship, are also said to be admirers of the 21-year-old starlet as the three sides possibly prepare to compete with each other for his signature.

Gordon reported that the Swiss side are looking for a fee in the region of £4m for the midfielder, who is also attracting interest from unnamed clubs in Europe.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers watches on.

Instead of splashing out £4m to sign the young maestro from Lausanne, Rodgers could save Celtic millions by unleashing Bosun Lawal in the first-team next season.

He just spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Fleetwood Town in England and could now be ready to step up and make his mark in the first-team for the Bhoys.

Why Brendan Rodgers should unleash Bosun Lawal

The 21-year-old ace came up through the B team at Celtic as a centre-back but emerged as a defensive midfield option for Fleetwood this season and caught the eye with his fantastic displays.

Lawal only turned 21 last month and is the same age as Sanches, who has been touted at a price of £4m, which means that both players are midfielders with long-term potential to improve and develop.

As you can see in the table above, the 6 foot 2 colossus outperformed Sanches at league level this season with his contributions in and out of possession.

Lawal has the physical attributes to dominate opposition players on a regular basis, whereas the Swiss gem lost the majority of his battles, and he contributed with more goals and 'big chances' created combined when in possession.

These statistics indicate that the Ireland international, whose U21 coach for his country Jim Crawford hailed as "exceptional", has the potential to be a better option than the Lausanne star for Celtic, as he can win possession back and win more battles for the team as well as having a greater influence at the top end of the pitch.

If he can translate his League One performances over to the Premiership then the young colossus could be a terrific player for Rodgers and a dream alternative to signing Sanches.

Celtic in talks to sign "gifted" £6m star who could be Jota 2.0

The Hoops are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the midfielder on a permanent deal.

ByDan Emery Jun 4, 2024

This would, therefore, save Celtic millions as they would not need to splash out £4m on the Swiss maestro or millions on another transfer target, as Lawal could step up to be a first-team addition when he returns from his loan for free.

Deal close: Newcastle think they’ve clinched move to sign £30k-p/w player

Newcastle United think they are close to wrapping up a deal to sign a £30,000-a-week Premier League player.

Newcastle transfer rumours

2023/24 was not as prolific a season as some at Newcastle may have hoped for. The Magpies secured a Champions League berth in 2022/23, but thanks to an injury crisis midway through this past campaign, the north-east outfit were forced to settle for 7th place in the Premier League.

Manchester United's victory in the FA Cup means that the Toon have missed out on Europe, but Eddie Howe and co. are no doubt keen to improve their squad over the summer as they prepare to once again fight for a place in the top four next term. While the summer transfer window is not yet officially open, they have already been linked with a number of players who could help Newcastle push back into the Champions League places.

Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a move to sign Brajan Gruda from Mainz 05 in a deal that would be worth €20m (£17m) in the coming months. Reports also suggest that the Magpies are looking to sign extra quality to boost Howe's attacking options. Newcastle are thought to be plotting a move to sign Jarrod Bowen from West Ham United this summer, as well as showing an interest in Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Elsewhere, it was claimed earlier this week that Newcastle officials have travelled to London to seal a free deal for Tosin Adarabioyo, whose current Fulham contract is coming to an end.

Now, a fresh update on Newcastle's hunt for incoming names has been provided by inews. The outlet references the aforementioned links to Adarabioyo, stating that “concrete progress” has been made on a move for the highly-rated stopper, adding that Manchester United have also shown an interest in the defender. However, Newcastle are thought to be ahead in the race, and "an agreement could come as early as next week".

inews also states that Newcastle believe a deal for defender Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly has been "clinched" amid interest from league rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Kelly joined the Cherries in 2019 and has since featured 141 times for the south coast outfit across all competitions. The 25-year-old, who earns £30,000 a week, has been a mainstay in Bournemouth's backline during his five years at the club and has previously earned high praise from former manager Gary O'Neil.

"I thought Lloyd was incredible. I think he had a 12-week ankle injury followed by a six-week calf injury," said O'Neil last year.

"Didn't have much time in between, and then came back today having not trained much, to play left-back against one of the best wingers in the world [Salah]. I thought he showed everything, the potential he has to be a top defender. I thought it was a very, very impressive performance against a top attacker."

However, Kelly is set to be out of contract at the Vitality Stadium come July 1, with Newcastle looking poised to snap up the versatile defender.

ECB chairman Colin Graves says ICC can 'recut the pot'

Adds a fresh finance model needed to keep all countries ‘sustantainable’

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Aug-2020The ICC might believe it had already somewhat levelled the monetary playing field with its fresh revenue distribution model in 2017, but Colin Graves, the outgoing chairman of ECB, says the global governing body can “recut the pot” to make it a much more equitable for the 12 Full Member countries. In 2017 the ICC Board, on which Graves sits, approved a new finance model that replaced the controversial arrangement worked out by the Big 3 comprising BCCI, ECB and Cricket Australia. As per the 2017 finance model, for ICC earnings estimated at $2.7 billion for the 2016-23 rights cycle, BCCI would get $405 million and ECB $139 million. Each of Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa, Pakistan Cricket Board, New Zealand Cricket, Sri Lanka Cricket, Cricket West Indies and Bangladesh Cricket Board would get $128 million. As for the smaller countries: Zimbabwe Cricket would get $94 million with Cricket Ireland and Afghanistan Cricket Board drawing about $40 million.Since then those figures have been revised slightly with all countries getting lesser money due to shifting global economy affecting ICC revenues. That, though, has had lesser impact on BCCI, ECB and CA, which rely on the lucrative media rights derived from bilateral and domestic T20 cricket leagues primarily. The rest of the Test-playing countries have failed to secure long-term broadcasting contracts which has increased their reliance on the annual payout from the ICC, which comes twice a year in January and July. This level of disparity would endanger the product of international cricket, according to a revealing paper submitted by Cricket West Indies to the ICC board in 2017. The author of that paper was CWI chief executive officer Johnny Grave. “The gap between wealthier and less wealthy cricket nations is widening and will contribute to less wealthy nations being less competitive, therefore devaluing the international cricket product,” the CWI paper said.Graves believes there is a solution though. “I think there’s a way to do that,” Graves told Sky Sports at lunch on the first day of the final Test of the England-Pakistan series, being played in Southampton. “I sit on that ICC Board at the present time and have done for the last four years and I think the ICC could look at the way that they share the money out from their pot. Because I’m not being unkind: the ECB, BCCI and Cricket Australia are not reliant on the ICC pot. They are reliant on their own pot.”And I think the ICC could recut that pot in a different way with all those countries to make sure they are all sustainable because we need all the countries sustainable going forward. Everyone of them.”As it happens the 2017 finance model is not part of the ICC constitution. In a paper on the new governance structure in 2017, the ICC stated the details of a financial model will “be determined by the Board from time to time in a manner that may allow each member to receive a different level of distribution”.Graves’ term as ECB chairman comes to an on August 31. However, he remains one of the contenders for the ICC chairman’s position which is yet to be filled after Shashank Manohar stepped down in June.Graves on ICC chairman electionThe current 16-member ICC Board has failed to reach a consensus on the chairman’s election process with debate surrounding whether there should be a two-third majority or just simple majority during voting process.Without giving away too much Graves said he would make a final call based on the support he got at the ICC Board. “That’s not up to me. At the end of the day the way the election goes you have to be nominated so if I don’t get nominated then I will be nowhere near it anyways. When the nominations happen I’ll have said to everybody I’ll look at it and see where I am.”
