Bid submitted: Man Utd lodge offer to sign the “English Neymar”

Manchester United’s esteemed Carrington academy is always one of the names thrown about when people discuss the topic of which Premier League club has the best youth setup. It is a debate that has raged on for years, and there is no right or wrong answer.

United’s academy has produced some sublime players over the years, from the Busby Babes to the Class of ‘92. Currently, the Red Devils have several academy graduates making waves in their first team, including Marcus Rashford and 2022 FA Youth Cup-winning duo Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Arsenal’s Hale End also boasts some exceptional players. They are responsible for the likes of one of England’s best current talents, Bukayo Saka. The Gunners also produced the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson, who are in their first team at the moment.

Another notable academy is at Cobham, where Chelsea greats such as John Terry were produced, as well as current players Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount, with the latter now at United.

However, one of the country’s best behind-the-scenes talents at the moment was produced by Tottenham’s academy. He is tipped to do big things in professional football, but there have recently been rumours linking him with a move away from the club this summer.

Man Utd target Spurs academy star

Spurs’ exciting young talent, Mikey Moore, made his debut for the Lilywhites’ first team at the back end of last season, but has recently been linked with a transfer during the summer window.

According to a report from Football Insider, the Red Devils are one of two clubs to make an offer to Spurs to purchase Moore this summer, who can sign his first professional contract next month when he turns 17.

Mikey Moore makes his Tottenham debut

The other interested parties are believed to be United’s bitter rivals, Manchester City, and German giants Borussia Dortmund. The Champions League runners-up believe the teenage sensation is a “huge” talent. He could follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens as young English talents to switch to the Signal Iduna Park.

Why Moore would be a good signing

There is no doubt that Moore is one of the best young talents, not only in England, but in European football. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him as the “English Neymar”, and it is clear to see why when looking at his statistics and playstyle.

Last season for Spurs’ Under-18s side, Moore played 14 times. His record was astounding, scoring 16 goals and registering nine assists. He was rewarded with his Premier League debut, a one-minute cameo against Man City, before playing two minutes in the final game of the season against Sheffield United.

In terms of Moore’s profile, he is a versatile attacker who can play anywhere across the frontline. He is a slick dribbler, using a low centre of gravity to slalom past defenders, as well as being a superb finisher. David Hytner of The Guardian explained that the youngster is a player who can “quicken the pulse”, especially when he takes on a defender, “gliding past them as if they are not there”.

This was further evidenced by Harry Brooks, a professional football coach working with academy and senior players, who was recently in conversation with The Athletic. Brooks explained that Moore is a “beautiful close-control dribbler” who is known to be “the go-to guy” when his side is attacking.

Kulig compared him to Neymar for good reason. In fact, you can see a further example of why that is with the goal below, against France at the Under-17 European Championship.

Note the way Moore receives the ball on the half-turn and lets it run across his body before he even takes his first touch. The youngster then bursts into space past three defenders before sharply changing direction. He has lightning-quick feet, which helps him to evade the final defender with a clever dummy, opening up space for a shot which he scored from. It is certainly a goal similar to something Neymar would score in his prime.

The 16-year-old has bags of potential and heaps of expectation around him, although having previously been called “down to earth”, it must not be something he allows to get to his head. It may be no surprise that United are looking to lure the attacker to Old Trafford with his first professional contract.

Moore has all the tools to become one of the all-time great England players, and it is certainly an encouraging start to his young career. Perhaps we will see him rise to the top of football in front of the Stretford End in the coming years.

Contact made: Liverpool eyeing "unbelievable" £60k-a-week ace this summer

Liverpool have made contact with an "unbelievable" Premier League player over a summer move to Anfield, according to a fresh transfer update.

Slot eyeing new signings for Liverpool

The Reds have had a lowkey summer in the transfer market to date, with Arne Slot easing into his new surroundings after replacing Jurgen Klopp while Euro 2024 takes centre stage.

That's not to say that constant rumours aren't emerging regarding new signings, with France and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman linked with a move to Anfield ahead of next season. The 28-year-old is seen as an ideal colleague for Darwin Nunez by bringing out the best in him with his trickery and end product out wide.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

Liverpool are also believed to have made an enquiry about the availability of Real Madrid's prodigiously talented teenager Arda Guler, who is currently impressing for Turkey. However, the reigning European champions are reluctant to sell him permanently, so the best the Reds could hope for may be a loan move.

Centre-back reinforcements feel like a must for Slot ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, especially with Joel Matip moving on. Nottingham Forest star Murillo has emerged as a rumoured target for the Merseysiders. The 21-year-old started 32 matches in the Premier League last season and has even been likened to a "prime Roberto Carlos", such is his ability.

Liverpool make contact with "unbelievable" ace

According to HITC, Liverpool have contacted Newcastle United over the potential signing of Anthony Gordon this summer, seeing him as a strong target to bring in.

In the report, the Reds are described as being "very keen" on the England international, with Slot wanting to "add to the club’s attacking pool", especially with the futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah somewhat uncertain.

Gordon's stock has risen significantly since he traded Everton for Newcastle last summer, with the winger standing out as one of the Magpies' star players during a tough campaign for them on the whole.

The 23-year-old ended the season with 11 goals and 10 assists in the league, with one of his strikes coming at home to Liverpool last August, prior to Nunez's late heroics earning Klopp's side a dramatic 2-1 win at St James' Park.

Gordon's impact in a Newcastle shirt has not been lost on many, including teammate Bruno Guimaraes, with the Brazilian saying of him back in March: "He has been amazing, he is so quick and when we get the ball to him we know he is going to do something special. No one at the club deserves to be in the England squad more than him. He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists."

Still only 23, there is still so much more to come from Gordon, and it could be that he is an upgrade on Diaz, whose end product has come in for criticism at times. The Colombian remains an excellent option for Liverpool, but if he does suddenly depart, £60,000-a-week attacker Gordon could end up being the ideal replacement.

Howe personally wants "amazing" Copa America player at Newcastle

With the summer transfer window now open, Eddie Howe personally wants Newcastle United to sign a creative midfield target who is now open to a summer exit, according to reports.

Newcastle transfer news

There's no doubt that Newcastle need a number of improvements if they are to make their return to European qualification next season, having finished a frustrating seventh in the last campaign. Already acting on that front, the Magpies have signed Lloyd Kelly on a free deal following the expiry of his Bournemouth contract at the end of last season.

Those at St James' Park will hope that the central defender is only the start, however, with links to the likes of James Trafford and Crysencio Summerville emerging in recent weeks suggesting that there's plenty more to come from Newcastle this summer. Summerville would be a particularly exciting arrival following an excellent season in the Championship with Leeds United, albeit one that was not rewarded with promotion.

The Leeds man isn't the only attacking player potentially lined up though, with the Magpies also turning their attention towards London. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Howe now personally wants Newcastle to sign Andreas Pereira from Fulham if the Tyneside club lose midfielders this summer.

"Exceptional" Newcastle bid for "superb" winger could "happen very quickly"

The Magpies were linked with a move earlier this month, but are now reportedly helped by Pereira's willingness to leave Craven Cottage in pursuit of the highest honours in the coming months. The Brazilian has enjoyed a resurgent spell in London following a period to forget at Manchester United and even earned a call-up to Brazil's Copa America squad as a result this summer.

"Amazing" Pereira can help fill potential Guimaraes void

Among the clubs who reportedly need to sell to maintain their innocence against the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, Newcastle may be left with little choice but to part ways with Bruno Guimaraes this summer. And if that is to be the case, the arrival of Pereira, alongside others, would be more important than ever in pursuit of replacing their star's all-round quality in midfield.

The numbers show just how difficult it will be to replace Guimaraes, but Pereira would at least replace part of his creative output for Newcastle, having managed just one less assist than his compatriot last season.

One man who won't want to see Pereira complete a move to Newcastle, however, is Marco Silva. The Fulham boss was full of praise for his midfielder last season, telling the club's official website back in 2022: "He has been outstanding this season. I know a lot of people had doubts when I decided to sign him but I knew his qualities and his character.

"Even last season we had a conversation about his future but it wasn’t the right moment for him to join us. He’s a key player on and off the ball and with set pieces. Two assists this afternoon. A top professional who is enjoying himself at the moment in a white shirt. The three midfielders all played an amazing game today."

Liverpool ready to offer big salary to get "world-class" ace for just £25m

Liverpool are prepared to offer a "world-class" player a huge salary in order to sign him ahead of a European giant in the summer transfer window, according to an exciting new update.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds continue to be linked with some eye-catching signings in the coming weeks and months, not least Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, who grew up supporting them as a youngster. Talks reportedly took place with the England international, although it remains to be seen if a move will come to fruition with the Magpies trying to sell other players instead to comply with PSR.

Meanwhile, Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has also been backed to seal a summer move to Anfield, although that would only happen if Alisson moves to the Saudi Pro League, which clearly wouldn't be the preferred outcome.

Valencia goalkeeperGiorgi Mamardashvili.

Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier has also been mentioned as a potential addition for Liverpool, although Chelsea are also thought to be rivalling the Reds for his signature. The 21-year-old scored 16 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances last season, and could add firepower to an attack that has suffered plenty of criticism of late, in terms of wasteful finishing from Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, in particular.

The Merseysiders have made an enquiry regarding the availability of Real Madrid teenager Arda Guler, too, but sealing his signature on a permanent basis could be difficult, considering how highly he is thought of at the reigning Champions League holders.

Liverpool ready to offer "world-class" ace huge salary

According to Sport [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are potentially leading the race to sign Bayern Munich ace Joshua Kimmich for just £25m this summer, and are willing to offer him bigger wages than fellow suitor Barcelona.

It is stated that the Reds "may have taken the lead" for the Germany international due to their willingness to splash out on his salary. He is currently earning a whopping £318,000 per week at the Bundesliga giants, who need to sell or risk losing him for free next year.

Kimmich is an outstanding footballer who has enjoyed such a glittering career, winning eight Bundesliga titles and one Champions League crown, among numerous other trophies, so he could be a signing of real intent by Liverpool.

The 29-year-old is an elite player who is capable of excelling at both right-back and in central midfield, and German legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has waxed lyrical over him, saying: "It is no exaggeration to say that Joshua Kimmich is the very embodiment of world class. There's only one Joshua Kimmich and we're very glad he plays at Bayern."

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has described Kimmich is "absolutely phenomenal", and he could add so much experience, providing competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, but perhaps most likely being brought in as a midfielder primarily.

Liverpool could sign “formidable” £50m Nunez partner

A number of top Premier League outfits have been named as admirers for this trophy-laden star.

1 ByAngus Sinclair Jun 29, 2024

That being said, he is now 29 years of age, and increasing the extortionate wages he is already on seems unlikely. It feels more sensible that Liverpool will target a younger option in the middle of the park instead, as was the approach with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch last summer.

Watch out Bruno: Man Utd plotting to sign Cole Palmer 2.0 in £51m "genius"

With the INEOS era now in full swing at Manchester United, the immediate task for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co appears to be righting the wrongs of over a decade of scattergun recruitment at the club, having far too often spent erratically in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Arguably, there has been just one unequivocal success story of the last ten years or so on the transfer front – Bruno Fernandes – with the former Sporting CP man having swiftly solidified his place as the club's talisman, chalking up 79 goals and 66 assists in just 233 games for the club in all competitions.

With just two games missed through injury across that four-and-a-half-year spell – both of which came back in May – the Portuguese genius has been United's 'Mr Reliable' for a significant period now, often shouldering the creative, attacking burden on his own at times.

That reliance on the 29-year-old has perhaps not always been a healthy one, however, with the club now eyeing a potential rival or competitor who can keep Fernandes on his toes…

Latest on Man Utd's search for a midfielder

According to Spanish newspaper AS – via Sport Witness – United are in the mix to sign RB Leipzig and Spain star, Dani Olmo, with the 26-year-old having been heavily linked for a departure following his sparkling form at Euro 2024 this summer.

Dani Olmo

As per the piece, the former Dinamo Zagreb playmaker does have a €60m (51m) release clause in his current deal, although this is set to expire today (20 July), thus ensuring any interested party would likely have to negotiate a fee with the Bundesliga outfit.

Why Dani Olmo could thrive in the Premier League

As indicated in the graphic above, Olmo was a central part of La Roja's European triumph in Germany, registering five goal involvements from just six outings, while also averaging 1.8 key passes and 2.3 successful dribbles per game as a marker of his creative influence.

Lauded as a "technical genius" by journalist Josh Bunting amid that form on the international scene, the Leipzig star has unsurprisingly caught the attention of Europe's elite clubs, with rivals Manchester City also said to be plotting a move this summer.

If United can win the race for his signature it could allow Erik ten Hag to finally acquire a worthy alternative to Fernandes in an attacking midfield role, with a certain Donny van de Beek – who recently departed for Girona – having tried and failed to dislodge the Red Devils' skipper.

What makes Olmo such an exciting option is also his apparent likeness to a current Premier League sensation in the form of Chelsea's Cole Palmer, with the Spaniard and the boyhood United fan said to share a number of stylistic and statistical similarities, as per FBref.

As can be seen above, it is Palmer – who scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists in the Premier League last season – who unsurprisingly comes out on top, but Olmo notably boasts a similar return with regard to assists per 90, as well as in relation to progressive passes and progressive passes received, indicating his ability to create in the final third.

The latter man did actually only end 2023/24 with four goals and five assists in Germany's top-flight, although considering that came from just 17 starts – while Palmer started 29 games for the Blues – it is hardly the worst return.

Of course, those at United may have concerns over Olmo's injury record in recent times, yet as seen this summer, when he is fit and firing the 5 foot 9 sensation can prove almost impossible to contain.

Fernandes, it must be said, may need to watch out.

Rahmat Shah's 103* trumps Paul Stirling's 128 as Afghanistan go 2-0 up

Better support with bat and ball ensured Rahmat Shah’s unbeaten 103 trumped Paul Stirling’s 128 as Afghanistan took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. A third-wicket partnership of 184 between Rahmat and Hashmatullah Shahidi carried Afghanistan to a seven-wicket win with 28 balls remaining, after Ireland had set them a target of 260.The only comparable partnership for Ireland was a fourth-wicket stand of 106 between Stirling and Curtis Campher, which came up in just 100 balls and featured excellent use of the sweep from both batsmen, particularly off Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan. The partnership left Ireland in good shape to mount a slog-overs charge, but they lost steam following the dismissal of Campher, caught at short extra-cover off Rashid. They only made 49 off the last 51 balls of their innings, and lost five wickets while doing so.Three of those wickets, including that of Stirling in the 45th over, went to the fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq, who finished with figures of 4 for 42 from his ten overs. Afghanistan’s other bowling star was Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who picked up three wickets including the key dismissals of Kevin O’Brien and Andy Balbirnie with the new ball, which left Ireland 20 for 2 at one stage. Stirling began rebuilding the innings in the company of Harry Tector, who made a watchful 24, before Campher joined him in the 25th over of the innings.Paul Stirling goes big down the ground•Abu Dhabi Cricket

Stirling celebrated his hundred – his 11th in ODIs, equalling William Porterfield’s Ireland record – by paying tribute to Roy Torrens, the former Ireland player and team manager who died yesterday, pointing to the sky after removing his helmet. Stirling had tweeted that Torrens’ passing was “crushing news”, describing him as “Irish cricket to the very core but an even better man”Afghanistan’s chase began brightly, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz following up his debut hundred in the first ODI by clattering 31 off 26 balls, including two sixes off Simi Singh’s offspin. Barry McCarthy and Campher struck in successive overs thereafter, though, to leave Afghanistan in a bit of bother at 48 for 2 in the ninth over.Rahmat and Shahidi counterattacked, hitting four fours and a six between them in their first four full overs together. Shahidi then slipped into a lower gear even as Rahmat kept finding the boundary with pristine drives to keep the required rate well under control. He brought up his half-century off 49 balls, at the start of the 23rd over.It took Shahidi another ten overs to get to that milestone, off 68 balls, but having done so he opened out significantly, hitting Craig Young for back-to-back fours in the 38th over to bring up Afghanistan’s 200, and repeating the dose off Simi in the 42nd over before holing out to long-off to fall 18 short of a century. There was no such trouble for Rahmat, who brought up the landmark for the fifth time in his ODI career, before giving a chance, put down at point by a diving Tector off McCarthy. By then Afghanistan only needed 21, and their captain Asghar Afghan ensured they’d finish in a hurry, hitting McCarthy for 6, 6, 4 in the 45th over and ending up unbeaten on 21 off 13 balls. While Afghanistan have now wrapped up the series with a game to spare, the final fixture on Tuesday will not be treated as a dead-rubber, with 10 World Cup Super League points still on offer.

On Thursday, BCA secretary Ajit Lele confirmed Hooda had been suspended for the rest of the season. “The Apex Council decided to suspend him for indiscipline,” Lele said. As part of the review, the BCA had sought clarifications from both Pandya as well as head coach and the team manager. “It was decided by the Apex council that Deepak Hooda has caused disrepute to the organisation and will not be considered to represent Baroda in the current domestic season,” the BCA said in a media release.Irfan Pathan, the former India allrounder and Baroda captain, had said BCA’s first response against Hooda was both “shocking and disheartening”.
