City lose 2-1 to Aston VillaLewis speaks about poor confidenceFace Everton in their next gameFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?
Lewis has insisted that the City squad are still fighting to win matches, despite winning one game in 12 across all competitions. The young defender admits that things are not quite clicking for the side at the moment but believes the time for talking about their poor form is over and that they must now start performing. City slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa on Saturday and sit nine points behind leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand.

After the game, Lewis said: "Of course, there's leaders in the dressing room that are natural leaders.
"They can speak, everyone listens and everyone agrees. But when it comes down to it, it's not what is said in the changing room, it's affecting the pitch and what we're doing on the pitch.
"That's what needs to be solved. Nobody is going onto the pitch saying 'I'm not doing that', or 'I don't want to win'. It's difficult right now but we have to stick together."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Alarm bells are ringing at the Etihad and, should they not pick up maximum points from their next two games against Everton at home and Leicester away, fans will begin to question how far City could fall. As teams around them continue to pick up points, City could end up in danger of being dragged into a fight for Champions League qualification – a competition they have not been out of since they qualified in 2011 for the first time since 1968.

Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR LEWIS?
Lewis will be desperate to prove that he and his City teammates have not given up hope for their season. They could still win the FA Cup, Champions League and, with a miracle, the Premier League this season but there is serious work to be done for Guardiola's men to rebuild their form and confidence.
How much do the Blues players earn annually and who receives the most into their account?
Chelsea’s financial strength plays a crucial role in their ability to attract elite players and secure high-profile transfers. Supported by affluent ownership and a somewhat spendthrift transfer strategy, the club generates substantial revenue through diverse channels, such as sponsorship agreements, commercial partnerships, and matchday sales.
This financial power allows Chelsea to offer competitive wages and attractive signing bonuses, making the club a top destination for world-class talent. Their consistent participation in European competitions further boosts their appeal, reinforcing their status as a major force in the transfer market.
The Blues' inflated squad size is indicative of the fact that they are one of the biggest spenders in the league in terms of wage, but none of their players make into the top 10 highest-earning players in England. In fact, there are just two Chelsea players in the top 20 list.
So, who is the highest earner at Chelsea this season? And who is on the opposite end of the spectrum?
GOAL delved into the numbers from Capology and found out!

Goalkeepers
No surprises here as first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is also first on the list of the highest-paid Chelsea goalkeepers, followed closely by his deputy in Filip Jorgensen.
For someone who has played just one game for Chelsea since joining the club in 2021, Bettinelli earns perhaps a lot more than a third-choice goalkeeper might warrant, especially considering the wages of Sanchez and Jorgensen.
Finally, we have Finnish custodian Lucas Bergstrom, who earns the least among his fellow Blues goalkeepers.

Defenders
Three players who have featured sparingly for Chelsea, albeit for different reasons, are the club's highest earners not only in defence but across the entire squad. These include Reece James and Wesley Fofana, both of whom have struggled to overcome persistent injury problems, and Ben Chilwell, who has fallen out of favor under coach Enzo Maresca.
Other defenders, such as Marc Cucurella, Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, and Axel Disasi, also earn significant salaries. Meanwhile, Malo Gusto, Renato Veiga, and Josh Acheampong are among the lowest-paid defenders on the roster.

Midfielders
One might assume that Cole Palmer, arguably the team's standout player, would be the highest earner in the squad. However, he isn't even the highest-paid midfielder at Chelsea, with that distinction going to Argentine star Enzo Fernandez. In fact, club-record signing Moises Caicedo is higher up the ladder than Palmer, with the former Manchester City starlet ranking third on this list.
Much like Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka has been on the periphery under Maresca and isn't a part of his plans, yet he is earning over five million annually.

Among forwards, the highest-earning players are Christopher Nkunku and Pedro Neto, with the former earning in double digits annually.
Surprisingly, Joao Felix, Jadon Sancho, and Mykhailo Mudryk earn as much as, or even more than, striker Nicolas Jackson. Meanwhile, Noni Madueke and young forward Marc Guiu find themselves at the bottom of this list.

Faheem Ashraf is likely to miss at least the next three games for Islamabad United in the PSL after splitting the webbing between his index finger and thumb on his left hand during their five-wicket loss to the Lahore Qalandars on Wednesday night.”Faheem suffered a laceration to the base of the left thumb. Suturing was completed in the ER, he was given antibiotics and paracetamol and discharged into our care,” United physio Jason Pilgrim said in a statement.Ashraf injured his hand while fielding at short fine leg during the fifth over of the chase, bowled by Hasan Ali. Ashraf had, by then, bowled his first two overs and bowled Fakhar Zaman before he walked off to get five stitches on his hand. He missed a major chunk of the game while getting medical attention and wasn’t allowed to bowl again but seeing the nature of his injury as an extraordinary circumstance, the umpires and match referee allowed Ashraf to bowl his remaining two overs – the 14th and 17th of the innings – while going off the field in between and after because he couldn’t field at all.Ashraf conceded a combined 21 runs in those two overs and finished with 4-0-31-1. United now have to fill his position in the lower middle order with either Muhammad Musa or Akif Javed.Ashraf has been one of the main players for United since 2018, having played 36 games until Wednesday with an impressive bowling average of 18.88 – the second-best in the league – and he is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the league with a tally of 51 wickets and holds the tournament’s second-best bowling figures, of 6 for 19. Over the last two seasons, his batting played a role in increasing the depth in their line-up.United are among the few teams disturbed by the postponement and shift of the PSL from Karachi to Abu Dhabi. Their roster of local players remains intact but most of their first-choice overseas players, who were around before the postponement, are not available for different reasons. They bought Usman Khawaja to replace Alex Hales, but they are also missing out on Lewis Gregory and Phil Salt, and even South Africa’s Janneman Malan, who couldn’t get an NOC from his home board.
She praised the performances of India’s debutants in Bristol, especially fellow opener Shafali Verma

Smriti Mandhana: Verma’s maturity a positive for India
India batter Smriti Mandhana believes that more opportunities to play Tests can help cultivate a better understanding regarding approaching the closing stages of each session in a day’s play.Mandhana’s views came after stumps on the rain-affected third day of India’s one-off Test against England in Bristol, where she fell for 8 in her second innings on the stroke of lunch, with her side following on after being bowled out for 231.In her first innings, Mandhana made 78 before her wicket became part of a collapse that started late in the final session of the second day, as India slipped from 167 for 0 to 183 for 5 – in all they lost all 10 wickets for 64. On the opening day, England, too, had suffered a collapse after tea losing 4 for 21 before the close.”I think that will just be an excuse to give,” Mandhana said when asked about the trend around a flurry of dismissals coming about towards the end of sessions in the match. “But we can consider for sure that we aren’t used to batting beyond 50 overs that much. But I wouldn’t say I got out because of lack of experience in Test matches because I threw my wicket away in the last session of yesterday.”But, definitely, I think a slight pressure of ending the day being not out, that might play a bit of a part [in the loss of wickets in a heap] and that will come with experience. The more we play Test matches, the more we’ll get used to the conditions – one over before lunch or one over before the day’s end and all those sessions, so we can be more mature about [approaching them] and not take pressure.”Related

Mandhana’s half-century in the first innings was pivotal to India putting on their highest opening stand in the format in response to England’s 396 for 9 declared. Ninety-six runs in that record 167-run opening tally came from 17-year-old debutant Shafali Verma. On the penultimate day of the Test – the standard length of women’s Tests is four days – Verma got India off to a brisk start in their second innings, having fallen 15 shy of their follow-on mark. After Mandhana’s dismissal, Verma pressed on to bring up her fifty off just 63 balls. In doing so, she became the first Indian, and the youngest player from any country, to make half-centuries in both innings on Test debut in women’s cricket.”It’s quite impressive to watch her bat from the other end,” Mandhana said of Verma, who is also her designated opener partner in T20Is. “I think we both are very similar [in our approach] to keep things simple, so we don’t really discuss much about batting in the middle. The way she changed her game and the kind of maturity she showed at this stage of her career, it’s very positive for Indian cricket going forward. Her shots, in T20Is I’ve always watched them from the other end. It’s amazing what she does. I hope she keeps going the way she is.”Smriti Mandhana was left frustrated by her dismissal on the third day•Getty ImagesMandhana, who had played only two Tests before, made her debut in the format at age 17, in the Wormsley Test in August 2014. In the India XI for the Bristol Test, she is one of the six players with prior Test experience. On Friday, she praised the performances of India’s five debutants – Taniya Bhatia, Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Sneh Rana, and Verma.”All the debutants have really got onto a good start,” Mandhana said. “In general, everyone was excited to play this Test match, and not just the debutants because we all are playing after a very long time, so I think it is a really special match. But all the debutants have really stepped up – Deepti, Shafali, Pooja and even Taniya with the catch [of opener Lauren Winfield-Hill in the first innings] – everyone has done a lot of contribution.”Mandhana got off the mark in her second innings with a cracking punch off fast bowler Katherine Brunt that went for four through backward point. But her 13-ball stay ended in the fifth over when she edged a wide, fullish delivery from the same bowler to be caught by Natalie Sciver at second slip.”Really disappointed,” she said when asked to review how the day had ended for India, on 83 for 1, forced into early stumps due to rain. “But, of course, before the game stopped, before lunch, I got out, so definitely disappointed.”I would have loved to stay there and come back fresh tomorrow to bat again, but that’s what the day’s cricket is, so we’ll take it. But Shafali and Deepti stitched in a good partnership at the end, so I think at the end we were in a good position.””The conditions changed slightly [on day three],” she said. “It was just windy, but it wasn’t swinging that much that it was not playable or something. It was good conditions to bat on still even if conditions were cloudy or overcast.”We just needed to take a few minutes initially. Of course, I lost my wicket, but I wouldn’t say that it was a very good ball. I think I gave away my wicket because it wasn’t that great a ball.”
Sri Lanka’s last innings on a horror tour of England was perhaps their most abject yet, but rain saved them the indignity of a whitewash. Under cloudy Bristol skies, Sri Lanka nosedived in the early overs, continued to plummet once the fielding restrictions were relaxed, and never seriously threatened to scramble out of the pit of tragicomedy, where they have wallowed more or less since the start of the (preceding) T20 series. This time, they were 166 all out in the 42nd over. Dasun Shanaka produced the only competent innings, finishing 48 not out – most of those runs having come in the company of the tail. Rain had caused a stoppage during Sri Lanka’s own innings, but returned in force during the innings break to make an England chase impossible.Although the pitch held no real terrors, England’s bowlers extracted seam movement and bounce – particulary in the early overs – to skilfully exploit the substantial technical shortcomings of Sri Lanka’s top order. Both openers were out largely due to poor footwork, and two middle-order batters were bounced out playing wild hook shots. Although Sri Lanka were 33 for 3, then 42 for 4, then 63 for 5 (and on in such fashion), there was no concerted effort to hunker down and rebuild – several batters getting out playing expansive strokes. With his brother having claimed a five-for on Thursday, it was Tom Curran who was England’s most penetrative bowler, his 4 for 35 gutting the middle order after Chris Woakes and David Willey had prospered with the new ball. Tom Curran was accurate, used the short ball well, and frequently got a touch of away-movement to the right-handers.Willey and Woakes claimed two wickets apiece, and Jonny Bairstow was excellent behind the stumps, taking diving catches to dismiss Pathum Nissanka and Chamika Karunaratne, and pulling off a stumping when Dushmantha Chameera dragged his back leg marginally out of his ground against Adil Rashid.Sri Lanka’s collapse began in the third over, when after a couple of decent early boundaries, a flat-footed Kusal Perera dragged Woakes back on to his stumps. Avishka Fernando was out soon after, falling over to the off side as Willey swung one into his pads – the not-out decision overturned on review. Nissanka then edged Willey behind, and Woakes bounced out Dhananjaya de Silva, who had played the short ball reasonably well in his previous innings, at the Oval. Also out to the hook was Wanindu Hasaranga, making it three times out of three this series he has fallen to that shot. This time, the bowler was Tom Curran (Sam Curran dismissed him this way in the second ODI, and Woakes got him in the first). There wasn’t much to say about the remainder of the innings, as Shanaka hung around and struck a few late boundaries to take Sri Lanka limping across the 150 mark. Rain, which had caused a delay of the toss, also caused a stoppage when Sri Lanka were eight down. No overs were lost. But a much heavier downpour at the break left the outfield sodden, and the match was abandoned at around 4.15pm local time.
Ipswich Town sent out a statement when picking up the services of Kalvin Phillips recently, gaining a new central midfielder on loan that once cost Pep Guardiola's Manchester City an eye-watering £45m to snap up.
Now, Kieran McKenna is tasked with breathing life back into the stuttering ex-Leeds United man's career, but he will have to sit out this weekend's Premier League tie, as the Tractor Boys travel to the Etihad to face his parent employers.
Ipswich might not be done there with exciting new additions in the centre of the park, however, as this EFL starlet is now being eyed up by the newly promoted outfit.
Ipswich's search for a midfielder
As reported by journalist Mike McGrath earlier this week, the Suffolk side are looking at Sheffield United youngster Ollie Arblaster this summer, alongside a whole host of other top-flight clubs.
Brentford and Southampton are also named as suitors keeping a close eye on the South Yorkshire-born talent, who scored his first-ever senior goal for the Blades recently in the division below under Chris Wilder's tutelage.
Impressing out on loan in the lower depths of the EFL with Port Vale in the past, this could be Arblaster's breakout campaign, with Portman Road his potential next onward destination.
What Arblaster could offer Ipswich
Of course, the youngster could well want to remain loyal to his hometown club for the time being, but the bright lights of the Premier League could also be too tempting, having got a taste for the elite division with the Blades last season.
Phillips was also a wide-eyed talent with the world at his feet once upon a time, playing for one of the Blades' rivals in Leeds, with the potential for Arblaster to become an even bigger name in the game, when compared next to the Man City dud.
Of course, the 20-year-old midfielder would find it hard to instantly break into the Tractor Boys first-team, owing to the fact Sam Morsy and Massimo Luongo are rock solid as a holding duo for McKenna.
Yet, Arblaster could be viewed as the type to catch a tiring Premier League defence off-guard, in place of the older heads at Portman Road from off the bench, with the Blades youth product excelling more as an attacking option centrally, than a defensively sound presence.

Away from scoring on the opening day as Wilder's men convincingly brushed Preston North End aside 2-0, Arblaster also shone in the following 2-2 draw with Queens Park Rangers, with an impressive five key passes registered in the score draw.
The 20-year-old ace could well go on to become Ipswich's next Darren Ambrose if everything clicks into place, with the former Tractor Boys icon once a raw talent himself in the middle of the park.
The club hero burst onto the scene at Portman Road back in the early noughties, netting eight strikes from 29 games during his first full league campaign in the senior mix.
Unlike both Ambrose, and now Arblaster, who have made the transition to men's football seem rather seamless, Phillips wouldn't instantly become a world-beater at Elland Road.
It wouldn't really be until Marcelo Bielsa's arrival to West Yorkshire that Phillips would be transformed into a player deemed worthy of a £45m price tag, having had to fight for his place in the senior side beforehand.
The "incredible" Ipswich target – as he was labelled by Wilder last season when cutting his teeth in the top flight – will have to battle it out for a space at the Tractor Boys too.
But, the future looks extremely bright for the Blades academy product, as does Ipswich's in the top division with McKenna continuing to strengthen.

Will play alongside local star Sandeep Lamichhane for Kathmandu Kings XI
ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jul-2021Shahid Afridi and local superstar Sandeep Lamichhane will reunite as team-mates in the Everest Premier League, Nepal’s domestic T20 tournament. Legspinner Lamichhane made his international T20 debut alongside the legendary Afridi when they were part of an ICC World XI team that took on world champions West Indies in a hurricane relief exhibition match at Lord’s. The duo will represent Kathmandu Kings XI in the competition that will run from September 25 to October 9 at Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.”Welcome on board with Kathmandu Kings XI,” Lamichhane told Afridi in a video message at the launch of the team’s campaign. “All the boys are really excited to see you here on the field. And I personally know you are going to have a great time during your visit to Nepal. Can’t wait to see you joining the team.”

Lamichhane was on his way back to London to take part in the Hundred and the Blast but had to return to Nepal because of visa issues despite having successfully arrived and nearing the completion of his quarantine.Lamichhane and Afridi have played against each other in the past in the Afghanistan Premier League and Pakistan Super League.”This will be my first visit to Kathmandu,” Afridi said. “I am very excited and looking forward to visiting.”The first question Afridi was asked by the press was how many sixes he was going to hit. Afridi laughed and said, “That depends on the bowling on the day, but I will try my level best to entertain the people of Nepal.”Covid-19 came at the worst possible time last year for cricket in Nepal, just as they were gearing up to see their biggest signing yet, Chris Gayle. Pokhra Rhinos had managed to secure the services of Gayle last year, but the tournament didn’t go ahead because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has been reacting to a “huge” Glasgow Rangers update from Ibrox following the club’s poor start to the season under Philippe Clement.
Clement coming under Rangers pressure
The Gers, in what is Clement’s first full season in charge in Glasgow, haven’t made the best of starts to the campaign. An opening day draw against Hearts in the Scottish Premiership was then followed by an early Champions League exit at the hands of Dynamo Kyiv, and prior to the international break, Rangers were beaten by rivals Celtic, who already gave a five-point advantage.
As a result, there have been rumours about Clement’s long-term position in charge at Ibrox, with reports even claiming he is “fighting for his job” following the Glasgow derby defeat.
Rangers figurehead Philippe Clement could be gone from Ibrox within months
This would be a massive call by those high up at Ibrox.
ByHenry Jackson Sep 6, 2024
Rangers have been playing their home games away from Ibrox due to work going on to their Copland Road Stand. There were delays which resulted in the club playing at Hampden Park, however, it has been confirmed in recent days that Rangers will return to Ibrox after the international break against Dundee in the League Cup. Their first league game back at Ibrox will be against Hibernian at the end of the month.
Robinson makes Rangers claim after Ibrox update
Sky Sports pundit Robinson, talking to Football Insider, spoke about Rangers’ defeat to Celtic before stating it is “huge news” regarding their Ibrox return date.
“You look at their recent record in the Old Firm, if you’re not beating the boys across the City then that’s where the problem starts. They can pick up as many points as they want in the rest of the season, but if you’re not beating their biggest rivals in the Old Firm, that’s where the issue is.
“I think it’s huge news that they’re going back to Ibrox, I think that whole situation was handled poorly, but the fact that they’re going back will play a huge part in the rest of the season. They’ve got to close that gap on Celtic, their recent record in Old Firms is poor. “In the final third I think Celtic have got better attacking options that Rangers have, I don’t think they’re far away on a game-to-game basis but it’s every game they’re getting beat which is the problem. You watch the games, they’re in the games but they’re still getting beaten.
“They’ve got the edge at the moment to Celtic and Rangers have got to close that gap. I think the thing for Philippe Clement is he’s a good manager if given the time and the players, and the most important thing, the budget. I think Michael Beale was a huge mistake for Rangers, they gave him a lot of money and he signed a lot of players who didn’t produce and the results weren’t there.”
Aside from Chelsea, Manchester United were the busiest of the traditional 'big six' sides in the summer transfer window.
Erik ten Hag welcomed in a number of exciting players, including Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, while also clearing out the squad of several players deemed not good enough to help the team get back to the top of the game, such as Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek.
Erik ten Hag
However, while the club made decent money on some of their departures, one of their most prominent sales from last summer is now worth considerably more to their current side and even outperformed Marcus Rashford last season.
Rashford's recent form
In the 2022/23 campaign, very few players in European football, let alone in the Premier League, were more dangerous than Rashford.
For example, in his 56 appearances that season, he scored a whopping 30 goals and provided 11 assists, meaning that he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.36 games. This red-hot form understandably earned him a bumper new £375k-per-week contract, including bonuses.
However, while he was a goalscoring phenom two seasons ago, he took a massive step back last year and could only muster a return of eight goals and six assists in 43 games, or an average of a goal involvement once every 3.07 games, which is an enormous dropoff.
Even worse than that, the 60-capped international only scored seven goals and provided just three assists in 33 Premier League matches, which equates to a substandard average of a goal involvement every 3.3 games.
Unfortunately for the 26-year-old, he hasn't looked much better this year either. In his four games so far, including the Community Shield, he's failed to score or assist a goal.
Overall, things are not looking great for the Manchester-born winger at the moment, and the fact he was outperformed by a former United squad player in the league last season certainly doesn't help.
Anthony Elanga's recent form
The former United ace in question is Swedish international Anthony Elanga, who, after failing to stake a claim in the first team, was sold to Nottingham Forest for just £15m last summer.
Anthony Elanga
Since making the move, the 22-year-old dynamo has shown the three-time European champions exactly what they're missing by becoming one of the most important players in Forest's squad.
For example, in just 39 appearances last season, the "brilliant" winger, as dubbed by former United defender Wes Brown, scored five goals and provided nine assists. This means he produced the same number of goal involvements as Rashford in fewer matches, equating to an average of one every 2.78 games.

However, when we look at just his Premier League performances, things start to look even more impressive, as all 14 of his goal involvements came in his 36 appearances in the competition, meaning he averaged one every 2.57 games in the most demanding league in football.
This outrageous output for a team that was battling relegation for much of the season understandably caught the attention of other clubs. According to a report from Sky Sports News, Newcastle United had a £50m offer rejected on deadline day last week.
Therefore, the Tricky Trees now value their £15m purchase at more than £50m, and based on his performances at the City Ground, who can blame them?
