Man Utd chasing move to sign £25m ace who’s starred after leaving Man City

Desperately in need of fresh faces under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United are now reportedly chasing a former Manchester City gem who has become a star player since leaving the Etihad.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils have expectedly had a mixed start under Amorim, who was always unlikely to make an instant impact from the off given just how great a task he has on his hands. Opening his tenure with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town, the former Sporting Club boss has since defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-2, thrashed Everton 4-0 at Old Trafford and suffered defeat in his first real test against Premier League title contenders Arsenal.

What has instantly become clear in the last four games is just how much work there is to be done at Old Trafford. Manchester United simply must get things right on the transfer front with Amorim in charge. Names such as Viktor Gyokeres and Nico Williams have already been linked to the Premier League giants and they must ensure that whoever arrives perfectly slots into their new manager’s system.

The attacking duo aren’t the only ones stealing the headlines as of late, either. According to Bild via Sport Witness, Manchester United are now chasing the signature of Felix Nmecha, who has become a Bundesliga star since leaving Manchester City in 2021.

Having sent scouts to watch the midfielder in Borussia Dortmund’s recent 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich, Manchester United may hope to fend off the equally-interested Newcastle United and Chelsea in 2025. The deal won’t come cheap, however, with Dortmund reportedly set to demand an “immoral sum of money” to part ways with Nmecha, who they signed for £25m.

The Red Devils may well act with plenty of caution too, given that the last ex-Manchester City graduate who went on to star at Borussia Dortmund before completing a move to Old Trafford was big-money flop Jadon Sancho.

"Creative" Nmecha could partner Ugarte

As things stand, Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation has seen Bruno Fernandes take a step back into a deeper midfield role alongside Manuel Ugarte, with Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho pushing on into the two advanced roles. But the new manager is seemingly just making do with the options at his disposal, making reinforcements all the more important.

The arrival of Nmecha would hand Ugarte a more natural partner and allow Fernandes to push on into the more advanced role in what would crucially get the absolute best out of the Manchester United captain.

Nmecha certainly seems ready to finally make his mark in the Premier League after being denied at Manchester City, having started seven of Dortmund’s Bundesliga games so far this season, scoring twice and assisting once from midfield. It’s a rise that’s been coming since his Wolfsburg days too, when U23 scout Antonio Mango described the midfielder as “creative”.

Potentially attempting the task that Sancho left incomplete, Nmecha could come back to haunt Manchester City by joining their arch rivals in 2025.

Sreesanth retires from Indian domestic cricket

This announcement brings the curtain down on a career that had just recently restarted

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Mar-2022S Sreesanth, the controversial right-arm swing bowler who won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup with India, has called time on a career that began 20 years ago. The 39-year-old, who represented his country 90 times across all three formats, finished with 169 international wickets.Sreesanth announced his retirement on Twitter. “With much sadness but without regret, I say this with a heavy heart: I am retiring from the Indian domestic (first-class and all formats) cricket. For the next generation of cricketers..I have chosen to end my first-class cricket career. This decision is mine alone, and although I know this will not bring me happiness, it is the right and honorable action to take at this time in my life.”This announcement brought the curtain down on a career that had just recently restarted after Sreesanth overturned a life ban from the sport for his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal. He was one of three Rajasthan Royals players to be punished, but in 2019, the Supreme Court set his sentence aside, which prompted the BCCI to reduce his ban to seven years, a period that ended in September 2020.

That made Sreesanth eligible to play domestic cricket again, and he returned in January 2021 as part of the Kerala T20 squad. Sreesanth played most of the white-ball games last season, but has announced his retirement just one first-class game into 2021-22.Even as a raw talent, Sreesanth was eye-catching, the highlight of it being the delivery he bowled to hit Sachin Tendulkar’s stumps in the Challenger Trophy. His outswinger was a thing of beauty, not to mention that he was the architect of one of India’s greatest Test wins. Fresh from a tour of the West Indies, where he handed Brian Lara a duck, Sreesanth, then 23, picked up a five-for that gave India their first Test win in South Africa. All that skill came with its set of quirks, best exemplified when he hit Andre Nel for a six and began dancing in front of the bowler, waving his bat around.

Sreesanth’ star would rise even higher by 2007, at the T20 World Cup, where he took six wickets and the all-important title-winning catch. He went on to play two games at the 2011 ODI World Cup, including the final, and ended his career with two World Cup medals – an achievement only a handful of players can boast of.”Today is a difficult day for me, but it is also a day of reflection and gratitude,” Sreesanth’s statement on Twitter read. “Playing for Ecc, Ernakulam district, varies diff. league and tournament teams, Kerala state cricket association, BCCI, Warwickshire county cricket team, Indian airlines cricket team, Bpcl, and ICC has been a tremendous honor.

“During my 25 years career as cricket player, I’ve always pursued success and winning cricket games, while preparing and training with the highest standards of competition, passion and perseverance. It has been an honor to represent my family, my teammates and the people of India.”Overall, Sreesanth took 87 Test wickets and finished with a bowling average of 37.59. In ODIs, he took 75 wickets at an economy of 6.05. In his ten T20Is, he took 12 wickets. While fighting it out against the BCCI to have his ban revoked through the 2010s, Sreesanth also dabbled in the entertainment industry, appearing in regional cinema, reality TV shows and dance events. In 2016, he also contested the Kerala assembly elections but lost. Most recently, Sreesanth did not make the shortlist for the 2022 IPL auction despite putting his name in.

Brett D'Oliveira century has Worcestershire sitting pretty on fine day at New Road

Captain scores second ton in as many games, Pollock and Barnard chime in with fifties

ECB Reporters Network21-Apr-2022Brett D’Oliveira struck his second century in two games since becoming Worcestershire club captain on the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with injury-hit Sussex at New Road. The 30-year-old followed up his unbeaten 134 against Leicestershire at the Uptonsteel County Ground with another superb knock of 106 not out to steer his side to 338 for 5 by the close.Opener Ed Pollock’s rapid 77 got the innings off to a flying start and then D’Oliveira and Ed Barnard, who made 75, pressed home the advantage during a fifth-wicket partnership of 166.Sussex stuck to their task on a wicket which was not straightforward for batting with some movement all day. But they were left to regret Tom Alsop at first slip dropping D’Oliveira on 19 off Henry Crocombe.Worcestershire ended the day in a position of strength and looking to press on for maximum batting points in the morning.D’Oliveira took over as skipper from Joe Leach this summer and is thriving on the extra responsibility. He is the first member of his famous cricketing family to be Worcestershire’s official captain, a feat not achieved by grandfather Basil or father Damian.D’Oliveira has been described as the “heartbeat” of the team by head coach Alex Gidman and was told to make no changes to his approach after taking on the leadership role.Sussex were decimated by injuries and handed a debut to all-rounder, Grant Stewart, and pace bowler, George Burrows.Stewart, 28, has made the temporary switch from Kent and has played six T20Is for Italy while Burrows, 23, has moved to Hove on a short-term contract after being released by Lancashire last summer.Steven Finn, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, George Garton, Dan Ibrahim and Jack Carson are all sidelined along with Jofra Archer, while fellow England bowler, Ollie Robinson is unavailable as he requires dental treatment after suffering a tooth infection.D’Oliveira, opted to bat on winning the toss and New Road looked a picture in warm sunshine with a sizeable crowd watching cricket at the ground in April for the first time in three years. It is just seven weeks since the ground was under several feet of water due to the flooding of the adjacent River SevernWorcestershire chose an unchanged side to that which impressed in coming so close to forcing victory in the opening game away to Leicestershire.Pollock had scored a superb century in the second innings of that match, his first County Championship appearance, and he again looked in excellent form when opening with Jake Libby. He had a slice of good fortune on 36 when he aimed a big hit against Stewart and the ball was helped over the boundary for six by Burrows fielding at fine leg. But Pollock continued to play with great freedom and brought up a half-century off only 47 balls.Libby played a solid support role during an opening stand of 85 but then was the first of three wickets to fall in four overs. He nibbled at a delivery from Sussex captain Tom Haines and Alsop clung onto a low, sharp chance at slip. There was warm applause for Pakistan Test star, Azhar Ali, as he made his way to the wicket on his home debut for Worcestershire.Haines struck again when Pollock, on 77, forced a delivery off the back foot and was caught at backward point. He faced just 74 deliveries and hit one six and 14 fours.Jack Haynes flicked a delivery from Burrows off his legs into the hands of square leg and, after making 20, Azhar was lbw to one angled back into him by Haines at 133 for 4.D’Oliveira blossomed after his let-off and a back foot cover drive for four off Jamie Allen was one of several sumptuous strokes reeled off by the 30-year-old.Barnard had been the ideal ally when launching a recovery with D’Oliveira at Leicester and the pair combined well again during the afternoon session today, the allrounder showing his class with a delicate late cut for four off Tom Clark. After tea, the fifth-wicket pair consolidated Worcestershire’s position and increased their partnership to 166.The second new ball brought about a breakthrough when Barnard was lbw to Stewart for 75.D’Oliveira was made to work hard for his runs in the 90s but a single off Crocombe took him to three figures off 216 balls with 11 boundaries. Haines ended the day with figures of 17-3-46-3.

Amid uncertainty over his future at Liverpool, Van Dijk has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich. However, reports that there is no substance to these rumours. The 33-year-old, whose contract with Liverpool expires this summer, is not currently under consideration by the Bundesliga giants, with no talks or negotiations having taken place recently.

The report further adds that the Reds are trying to persuade Van Dijk to extend his stay at Anfield, with the club optimistic that their captain will not leave this summer. However, last week, the Dutch centre-back admitted he wasn't sure where his future lies.

He said: "As long as I am calm to you guys then there is no need to panic, whatever may happen in the future. If I was worried you would see me playing a little bit worried and that is not the case.

"Maybe I will run this fully down and then if there is still no news, I don't know. I don't know at this stage (what will happen). But I don't want to create any anxiety or anything like that, I just keep my head down and focus on hopefully winning the next 10 games.

"That is my full focus: to be there for the manager, the players, the fans. So let's see what it brings and I am sure by the end of the season there will be news. But what kind of news I am not sure."

DID YOU KNOW?

According to reporter Christian Falk, Liverpool have already lined up a three-man shortlist to replace Van Dijk, should the Dutchman leave this summer. Per the report, Liverpool are keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck, Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and Wolfsburg's Konstantinos Koulierakis.

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR VIRGIL VAN DIJK?

Liverpool's season has turned from terrific to terrible in the matter of a week. Last week, they were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, losing to Luis Enrique's side on penalties at Anfield in the second leg. On Sunday, they crumbled to a 2-1 loss against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

They are currently 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with just nine games to go. Their next game is a Merseyside derby against Everton on April 2. However, Van Dijk admitted that every game from here on would be a test, and that he knows a considerable lead shouldn't be taken for granted.

For one more time, thousands made the journey to the MCG for Shane Warne. It was a chance to farewell one of the game’s greats at the ground he graced on so many occasions: the scene of his 7 for 52 against West Indies, the Ashes hat-trick and the 700th Test wicket among them.It was also about more than cricket, just as Warne was. His legacy will live on far and wide across so many walks of life as shown by the galaxy of names from sport, music, television and film to make tributes either in person or via video on an emotional evening. From Greg Norman to Kylie Minogue to Robbie Williams to Chris Martin to Ed Sheeran. His charity work was also strongly featured and there will be a United Nations conservation grant put in his name after recent work he had started to undertake.Related

Facing Shane Warne: the magic and the theatre

Shane Warne's magic was made for television

In praise of Shane Warne, cricketing genius

Yet, it was what Warne achieved in those 22 yards that shaped and defined him. As a symbol, there was a cricket pitch laid out in the middle of the VIP section on the ground complete with stumps at either end. Many of the public had heeded the request of Warne’s family to come decked out in cricket gear, while his other sporting passion – Aussie Rules – which had been his first dream, was also well represented. This was an event worthy of Warne and the life he lived, tragically cut short at just 52.His father, Keith, who gave the first address of the family, quoted the line Shane had used himself: “I smoked, I drank, and I played a little cricket.”That last bit led to him being one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Century in 2000, produce countless match-winning performances, and to be termed “the greatest” by former England captain Nasser Hussain, who was part of the player panel that delved into his immense on-field feats [and aura of Shane Warne] plus the character behind the scenes.Mark Taylor, Warne’s Australia captain from 1994 to 1999 – which were among Warne’s peak years – and a crucial hand in so many dismissals at first slip, said, “He made slow bowling fashionable again, he made it cool.”Merv Hughes, a fellow Victorian, formed a close bond with Warne on both sides of the picket fence. “As good as he was on the cricket field, he was five times better off it,” he said. “One of the most loyal people you know. He did what he did because of who he is – I feel sorry for people who never met him.”Fans gather around Shane Warne’s statue outside the MCG•Getty Images

Brian Lara, who had Warne’s measure at times during their immense tussles, including the 277 at the SCG in 1992-93, remembered the first impressions after West Indies had been dismantled at the MCG the game before. “We were in a panic from Melbourne to Sydney, thinking it was all over… that’s when we knew that we had met someone very, very special,” he said. That performance at the ‘G was also recalled in a letter Shane’s brother, Jason, had written to him a few weeks afterwards – dated February 5, 1993 – which showed the extraordinary faith in his ability to change the game.”I can’t tell you how proud of you I was [when] I first saw it on Teletex,” Jason wrote of the haul. “Well done, keep it up. Loads of hard work at the nets now could set you up for the rest of your life. Don’t let the chance slip by enjoying the limelight and resting on your laurels. That comes in 10 years’ time when you [have] re-written all the record books.”Now’s the time to put everything, and I mean everything, into it and make it work for you. So come on, make some more sacrifices and give people the opportunity in 20 years’ time to say, remember Shane Warne, we’ll never get another leggie like him. He was the best spinner Australia have ever had.”Allan Border was Warne’s captain in that West Indies Test, having a few months earlier thrown him the ball in Colombo in what would lead to his first match-winning performance. When the panel was asked by Mark Howard, Warne’s friend and fellow broadcaster, what they would say to him, Border, his voice cracking, said: “Thank you for making my captaincy… it revitalised my captaincy towards the end of my time. I was lucky to have two years with Shane, and I’d just thank him for that.”Allan Border and Mark Taylor share their Warne stories at the state memorial•Getty Images

For so many, including a vast number of those in the stands at the MCG on Wednesday night, Warne was the cricketer who did wondrous things. But he was a son, a brother and a father. The final addresses of the night came from his three children – Brooke, Summer and Jackson – with heart-rending speeches.”You lived 100 lives, Dad,” Summer said. “You never took anything for granted and you made sure you lived every day to the fullest.”Jackson said there had never been any disappointment he did not follow his dad into cricket but recalled one successful outing. “In one of the first games of cricket I ever played, you told me, ‘Just go out there and have fun because when you’re happy, good things will happen.’ So that was the mindset I had for that game. I ended up taking a hat-trick and that’s a memory I will never forget. You were so proud of me. Although I didn’t go down the cricket path, you didn’t mind. You just wanted the best for me.”A few moments later, the trio was on the second tier of what was previously the Great Southern Stand, for the closing moment of the memorial as it was officially renamed the Shane Warne Stand.”He went from being a wide-eyed boy with dreams to be a citizen of the world and left no one behind. He was a champion in every way. And now, every time we look into the great southern stand we will think of Shane,” MC of the event Eddie McGuire said.A few chants of “Warnie, Warnie” could be heard from the crowd. For one more time, the MCG rose and cheered for Shane Warne.

Club ready to pay £8m+ for Southampton ace told to find new club in January

Southampton could be set for a welcome windfall as one of their stars is attracting concrete interest ahead of the January transfer window, with Russell Martin seemingly happy to let him leave.

Southampton expected to be active in January

The Saints signed 15 new players over the summer as they looked to adapt to life in the Premier League, but that is yet to bear fruit as they sit rock bottom.

With just one win to their name all season, Southampton are already five points from safety and threatening to be cut off from the other 19 teams in the division. Their most recent defeat, a 3-2 loss to table-topping Liverpool, clearly showed their problems as all three goals stemmed from mistakes from Martin’s side.

First, they lost the ball inside their own penalty area, before Alex McCarthy misjudged a race with Mohammed Salah and to rub salt in the wound, summer signing Yukinari Sugawara handled the ball inside the box to concede a spot kick which Salah duly converted to seal all three points.

Things are not likely to get any easier immediately for the St Mary’s side, with games against high-flying Brighton, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham in their next four before a trip to Fulham, all of whom are in the top half of the Premier League as things stand.

Southampton’s next five Premier League games

Brighton (Away)

Chelsea (Home)

Aston Villa (Away)

Tottenham (Home)

Fulham (Away)

The Saints are expected to be active in January despite their numerous summer additions, with a move for Romano Schmidt having already been mooted on the south coast.

St Mary’s exits may be needed to balance the books though, and now one man could be on the chopping block.

Belgian side willing to pay £8m+ for Southampton striker

That comes as reports in Belgium claim that Champions League side Club Brugge are ready to shell out to sign out-of-favour Southampton man Paul Onuachu permanently in January.

The striker has been out of favour since his arrival on the south coast and spent last season out on loan with Turkish side Trabzonspor, where he found the net 17 times in 25 appearances.

However, his chances under Martin have been few and far between; the striker started his first game of the season against Liverpool and was not even part of the squad for the first five games of the campaign.

It was claimed that the Saints were “prepared to keep him” if no suitable bid came forward, hardly a ringing endorsement of Martin’s faith in the striker, and his reluctance to start the Nigerian has proved that yet further.

Now, they and he may be offered a way out. After Onuachu was “told to find a new club” by the Saints, Club Brugge have shown an interest provided that they can get a deal done for “an amount under ten million euros” [£8.3m], though of course negotiations could drive that higher.

Onuachu, meanwhile, is keen to leave the south coast side permanently and “is already looking forward to a return to the Jupiler Pro League”, where he starred for Genk before joining the Saints in 2022.

Out of contract in 2026, Southampton may not get a better chance to minimise their losses on the forward, who they paid £15m to sign in 2023, while those funds could be used to battle relegation.

Fernandinho tentou duas vezes.

GOLEIROS SEGURAM O PLACAR ZERADO
Precisando do resultado, o Avaí se lançou com tudo para o campo de ataque, principalmente depois dos 15 minutos. Antes disso, o Brusque tentou algumas subidas e levou perigo, mas sem conseguir balançar a rede.

Liverpool in contact over move for £50m+ attacker who may replace Salah

Following a frustrating yet resilient draw against Fulham, Liverpool are reportedly in contact over a potential deal to sign an in-form La Liga winger who could replace Mohamed Salah in the summer.

Liverpool transfer news

Down to 10 for the majority of the game against Fulham following Andrew Robertson’s misplaced touch and then misplaced challenge on former Liverpool man Harry Wilson, the Reds did well to climb from behind twice to earn a point against the impressive Cottagers. Most notably, it was Diogo Jota who made his return from injury to do what the likes of Darwin Nunez haven’t been doing by clinically equalising deep into the second-half.

Whilst their title charge continues to rumble on in front of the Anfield crowd, however, concerns are still growing over the futures of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As things stand, all three are set to depart as free agents at the end of the season and whilst reports have been positive regarding Van Dijk and Salah in recent weeks, both stars are yet to put pen to paper on extensions. Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is seemingly holding his cards close to his chest.

As well as Diaz: Slot must drop Liverpool man who lost 75% duels

The Liverpool manager must take the central midfielder back out of the starting XI.

1 ByDan Emery Dec 14, 2024

Losing any of the three stars would be a disaster for those at Anfield, but they’re at least preparing for the worst. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are in contact with intermediaries over a potential move to sign Barcelona star Raphinha. The Brazilian has been in the form of his career this season and has attracted the interest of the Reds alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

At this point, Barcelona have reportedly dismissed any idea of selling their star even among their consistent financial difficulties, but whether Liverpool change their minds if Salah leaves in the summer remains to be seen.

"Amazing" Raphinha one of few who could replace Salah

One of the best Premier League players of all time, replacing Salah will be mission impossible for Liverpool whether it’s this summer or in a couple of years. The Egyptian can do it all at what is a rare consistent rate. To find another player capable of leading the goalscoring charts and assist charts whilst avoiding injury issues seems merely a fantasy for Michael Edwards and Liverpool. But Raphinha, recently valued at £52m, certainly ticks a few boxes on that front.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

The former Leeds United star is enjoying the season of his career, scoring 17 goals and assisting a further 10 in just 23 games in all competitions. Any notion that Barcelona should sign Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams to replace him is almost laughable these days.
