Todd Murphy prepares for Ashes baptism-of-fire after Nathan Lyon injury

Todd Murphy is expecting to face aggression on two fronts at Headingley this week: from the England batters and the crowd.Murphy, who made his debut in India earlier this year and played all four matches in the series, is in line to replace Nathan Lyon whose run of 100 consecutive Tests has been ended by the calf injury he sustained at Lord’s.That game concluded in front of a hostile crowd who had been angered by Alex Carey’s stumping of Jonny Bairstow, which extended into ugly scenes inside the Long Room when Australian players were confronted at lunch. With the series now moving to a venue known for its raucous atmosphere, there is unlikely to be any dampening of emotions from the home supporters, especially given the short three-day turnaround.Murphy played in front of some emotive and noisy crowds during his debut series in India but is expecting the experience to be quite different when he takes the field this time.”They made a lot of noise but were all quite friendly,” he said. “From speaking to the boys, this is probably the most hostile ground you get in England. I’m quite looking forward to it if I do get the opportunity, having grown up watching Ashes cricket. It’s going to be different and I’m sure they won’t hold back, so just embrace it and try to have a good time…everyone’s under no illusions it’s going to come pretty hard.”He is also prepared for England’s aggressive batting line-up to try to latch onto his inexperience. They had taken Lyon for four runs an over although had lost four wickets to stumpings against him in the process.”Think they’ll probably come even harder at me,” Murphy said. “Obviously I haven’t played a hell of a lot of Test cricket, there’s a challenge that presents itself. They keep taking the game on and I think it’s about trying to navigate through that, come up with a few different ideas that can help and try to keep creating chances.”Looking back on India, getting the opportunity to play Test cricket and being exposed to high-level contests only helps and think I took a lot of confidence from that experience. Trusting that if do get the opportunity, believe in myself that I can be good enough at this level.”Related

Since it became clear Lyon’s tour was over, the pair have chatted about the challenge ahead. Speaking after the fourth day at Lord’s, when he had hobbled out to bat, Lyon endorsed Murphy’s credentials.”I sat with Todd in the last session there and spoke about spin bowling as we do,” Lyon said. “I have a lot of confidence in Todd. He is a great kid. He is willing to learn along the way. His stock ball is good enough in international cricket. We have seen that in India.”It will be a different challenge with the England batters. If they do come at him, it provides Todd with a decent challenge. I have told him my phone is always on, it doesn’t matter if I am sitting in the changeroom with him or I am sitting at home watching it in bed.”Unlike in India, where Murphy operated with Lyon throughout then also had Matt Kuhnemann in the attack for the latter three Tests, this time he will be the lone frontline spinner – a role he has only held twice in his first-class career. Since that tour he has worked on strength and conditioning after feeling the effects of the increased workload, which was the reason he pulled out of an early-season county stint with Durham.”It’s going to be different outlook for me,” he said. “I had a really good chat with Nath, think it was day four or five of the last Test, and he just said trust what you’ve got, believe in it and don’t go away from it. Don’t expect yourself to do to much. My body’s feeling really good at the moment. I’m confident that the work I’ve put in post-India to get that right, hopefully can hold up.”There had been plans for Murphy to make a short trip to Paris and back in order for him to obtain the necessary visa to play for Durham should an opportunity open up, but his flight was cancelled at the last moment when he was at the airport. There was some consideration to him potentially getting a game while the Test series was in progress, although Lyon’s injury has now made that notion redundant, and whether he joins Durham for a late-season stint will now likely depend on his workload over the next month.

Newcastle now lead Man Utd in race for £25m ace who scored hat-trick at SJP

In what could see them get one over on Manchester United, Newcastle United are now reportedly ahead of the Red Devils in the race to sign an attacking addition who silenced St James’ Park earlier this season.

Newcastle transfer news

Having battled PSR constraints in the last two windows, rumours suggest that Newcastle could be ready to spend big again at long last. The Magpies have been linked with moves for the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Tammy Abraham in recent weeks, as those in Tyneside look to reinforce Eddie Howe’s attacking options once and for all.

Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt.

The former Bournemouth boss has been forced to make do with what he’s got throughout the current campaign, even as injuries have piled up once again. Now, when the summer arrives, he could finally welcome the reinforcements that he has so desperately needed to maintain a push for Champions League qualification.

Whether their spending comes with a sacrifice remains to be seen, however. There certainly won’t be a lack of suitors for Alexander Isak this summer and his sale, which could yet reach the £150m mark, would undoubtedly unleash PIF’s impressive spending power.

It’s then that the Magpies could turn towards a player who has already impressed at St James’ Park, taking advantage of the edge that they have over Manchester United in pursuit of his signature.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle now lead Manchester United in the race to sign Justin Kluivert from Bournemouth, who value their forward at just £25m this summer, with the Dutchman reportedly a fan of their project.-

The son of former Newcastle man Patrick Kluivert, the 25-year-old has enjoyed an excellent season on the South Coast and even has two hat-tricks to his name – including one at St James’ Park. Taking home the match ball in a stunning 4-1 victory, Newcastle’s interest in his signature should come as little surprise.

"Amazing" Kluivert has finally found best form

For some time, the jury was still out on Kluivert, who had big shoes to fill thanks to his father’s legacy. A permanent move from Ajax to AS Roma never truly looked like working out and the loan moves which followed to the likes of Valencia, OGC Nice and RB Leipzig also failed to hit the heights.

For a moment, Kluivert was on course to miss out on what many believed to be a destined journey to the top. And then came Bournemouth. On paper, a player who struggled in the Serie A and Bundesliga always seemed unlikely to star in the Premier League, but Kluivert has done just that in his second season – scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

With two match balls to his name already, the Dutchman has 10 more league games to add to his tally and earn even more impressive praise in a season that could simply be the beginning of a star finally realising his potential.

Praised for his goalscoring exploits in a 5-1 thrashing of Nottingham Forest, with Andoni Iraola even describing his disallowed effort as “amazing”, Kluivert is certainly one to watch.

Sammy urges WI batters to show more 'intent to score'

“It’s not just about looking for boundaries but looking for scoring opportunities and keeping the strike rotating”

Deivarayan Muthu21-Jun-20233:38

Daren Sammy: ‘We want to throw the first punch’

Daren Sammy, the West Indies head coach, is wary of the threat posed by the new ball in the early-morning conditions in Zimbabwe, but has called for more intent from his batters. In West Indies’ opening game against USA in the World Cup Qualifiers at the Takashinga sports club in Harare, they had a sedate powerplay, managing just 41 runs for the loss of both their openers Brandon King and Kyle Mayers.”We don’t have say in how the toss goes, but whenever we bat, that new ball poses a challenge,” Sammy told CWI media. “You’ve got to make sure that the opposition don’t get too much ahead when that new ball comes. I thought we could have had more intent because that’s one of the things we are talking about as a batting group – intent to score. And when I say intent to score, it’s not looking for boundaries but looking for scoring opportunities and when you do that, you could score off good balls and get rotation of strike going.”Again, it’s a work in progress and we have to bowl well and keep creating opportunities. We dropped a couple of catches and that could affect us in the bigger scheme of things. But I’m quite happy with the way we’re going; the last six games that we have played we’ve taken steps in trying to play the brand of cricket we want to move forward with it. Again, it’s sticking to our guns, sticking to the plans that we have, and believing and committing to the execution.”Related

Despite King and Mayers scoring nothing or next to nothing, and despite Shamarh Brooks unavailable because of illness, West Indies regained lost ground through their middle order. Shai Hope, who has slid down to No.4 since taking charge of the ODI side, and Johnson Charles, who had replaced Brooks, led a quartet of half-centuries as West Indies posted 297, which proved 39 too many for USA. Though none of the batters could kick on and score a century, Sammy was pleased with the progress of the line-up.Under Sammy and Hope, West Indies are looking to adopt a more aggressive approach and on Sunday, they had batting all the way down to No.11, with allrounder Akeal Hosein slotting in there. It was this depth that perhaps prompted the likes of Hope and Nicholas Pooran to keep playing their shots.Daren Sammy: “I have full confidence that my men will go out and do themselves and the region proud”•Peter Della Penna

“I listened to the captain after the post-match,” Sammy said. “He said ideally you may want one of them to score a big hundred, but he was happier that performances came from different batsmen in the group. You look at Brandon King, who has been playing well, didn’t get a score, Kyle Mayers didn’t get a score, so it’s good signs for us that even though we were under pressure we came back strongly and ideally you would want one of those to convert it into a hundred and we, as a team, celebrate the milestones after.”But yeah the guys have prepared well and they are hitting lots of balls and they understand the direction the team wants to go in as a batting group. It is early doors, but the fact that mindset is getting towards what we want to do as a team I believe that you will see improvement in days to come.”West Indies’ next game is against Nepal, who had strung together an improbable series of wins to make it to the World Cup qualifier. In their first match of the tournament, they brushed UAE aside by six wickets. Nepal’s head coach is Monty Desai who was previously with West Indies as their batting coach under Phil Simmons. Sammy made it clear that West Indies are not taking any opposition lightly in a cut-throat tournament, which allows just two teams to qualify for the World Cup later this year in India.”Yeah, I guess [in] the first match against the USA, we got the ‘W’ that we wanted, which was the win,” Sammy said. “Great start to the tournament, but we have so much left in the tank. The guys came out and you could see they were not happy with the way they played, which is a good sign for us. We keep challenging ourselves and yeah in the end we have a few things we have to continue. But it’s a work in progress – trying to find the identity of our cricket moving forward.”But, yeah, I was pleased with the victory. You come [up] against Nepal, a team who is on the rise and they’ve been playing some good cricket, so again we respect all our oppositions, but we focus on the things that we want to do as a team and focus on the brand of cricket we want to play. And it all boils down to our preparation, which we’ve been doing well and then on game day the execution. I have full confidence and belief in the boys – or men rather – that they will go out and do themselves and the region proud.”

LPL Season 4 to have IPL-style auction for the five squads

Babar Azam, David Miller, and Shakib Al Hasan are among the stars who have signed up ahead of the auction

Madushka Balasuriya23-May-2023 • Updated on 29-May-2023Babar Azam, David Miller, Shakib Al Hasan and Wanindu Hasaranga are among the big stars already signed up for the fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), which will have a player auction this year, making it the third men’s franchise league and fourth overall – after the IPL, SA20 and WPL – to have one.The auction, where the five franchises will be allowed to spend a maximum of US$ 500,000 each, is scheduled for June 14*. The player registration portal was opened last week, and Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that over 500 players have already registered. The tournament will run from July 30 to August 20.An additional $500,000 was made available to the franchises for the direct signings prior to the auction, which took the total purse available for franchises up to $1 million – a sharp increase from the $350,000 in previous seasons.Babar Azam, Shakib Al Hasan among direct signingsHere’s a list of players who have already been signed up by the five franchises using the additional $500,000.ESPNcricinfo LtdAll players signed will be contracted for up to three years, with franchises getting the right to “retain or release players on mutual consent” at the end of every year. Slots created through player releases or non-availability will be filled through an annual mini-auction. Franchises will also be allowed to trade in specifically designated windows, though the exact details of this have not yet been released. How the auction will workEach team will have a squad for 20-24 players, inclusive of a mandatory six overseas players and 14-19 domestic players. As mentioned earlier, each team will have a purse of $500,000 at the auction. Any money not spent from the pre-signing kitty cannot be carried over to the auction. The teams will also have a right-to-match option for their players, and the money for that has to come from within the auction kitty.Bidding will take place between two teams at any given time, with a third team allowed to join the bidding only once one of the first two teams has withdrawn from the process. An “accelerated” auction process will take place after the first 70 names have been presented for bidding. This process will see franchises nominate 15-20 players, including unsold players, who will go under the hammer.IPL-style player categories, base pricesPlayers will be categorised into two groups – capped and uncapped. Each capped player will be able to register themselves under base prices ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 in $10,000 increments.Uncapped players will be classed with a base price of $20,000 – those having played a minimum of 50 first-class matches; $10,000 – a minimum of 25 first-class matches, or a minimum of 18 matches in the LPL or any other equivalent T20 franchise league; and $5000 – those who do not meet any of the aforementioned criteria.LPL to be played in its intended window for the first timeThis will also be the first edition of the LPL to be held in its intended July-August window, with the first three iterations taking place in December – the first two times because of Covid-19, and the last time as a result of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. But, despite being in its fourth season, the tournament will still have just the five teams taking part. Of the five sides, two – Colombo Strikers and Kandy Falcons – have had changes in ownership this year, and the former has changed from Stars to Strikers. And, unlike last year, this year’s tournament will take place only in Colombo and Kandy, with the Hambantota leg scrapped.Samantha Dodanwela, the tournament director, attributed the failure to include a sixth team – something being discussed since the conclusion of the first LPL – and the removal of games in Hambantota, to a shortened window created by Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka, leading into the LPL, and the CPL, which begins four days before the LPL final.”This year, the window was shortened because we will be playing Pakistan – we have to wait until that series is over – and then we have to release players for the Caribbean Premier League which will happen on the 25th [16th] of August,” he explained.Dodanwela added that another team could be added for the next edition of the tournament.*The article was updated after SLC confirmed the LPL auction date.

Ahead of the revamped Club World Cup this summer, City star Foden has made it clear he and his team-mates want to win the inaugural edition of this competition; with the England international keen to put in some good personal performances of his own.

Ahead of the start of the tournament, he told FIFA: "Yeah, very excited. Obviously, it’s the best of the best teams all around the world. Obviously, it’s going to be something new for us that we have not experienced before but, like I said, it’s really good to have this competition, I think, to even get ready for this season. So, it’s like a great warm-up for this season and, yeah, hopefully, we can compete against the best teams and, yeah, try and win it.

"It’s definitely a bit of that, yeah. Obviously, speaking to a few of the lads, we’ve spoken about that – being the first on the trophy would be nice. So, that’s definitely the aim and, with the players that we have and the quality that we have in the team, I am pretty sure we’re more than capable of doing that. So, yeah, just looking forward to it."

When asked what his and City's goals were, he added: "Obviously, to win it, but I feel that my personal goal would be just to enjoy it, compete against the best players, and try to perform to the best of my ability. I think that’s me."

Foden has endured a difficult season, something that was in stark contrast to his superb 2023/24 campaign – where he was named the Men's PFA Players' Player of the Year. After notching 40 goal contributions last term, he chalked up just 16 this season, with the England international sometimes left out of Pep Guardiola's team. It is clear that the 25-year-old wants to put things right as soon as possible, though.

49ers must axe Rangers dud who Ferguson said could "become a big player"

Glasgow Rangers avoided embarrassment by coming back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 in a dramatic Scottish Premiership clash with Dundee on Saturday.

The Light Blues needed two long shots from Tom Lawrence and James Tavernier to get back level, before Cyriel Dessers secured all three points late on.

It was Lawrence’s first goal for Rangers since October of last year against FCSB in the Europa League, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will still be at Ibrox next term, as his contract is due to expire this summer.

The Rangers players who are out of contract this summer

The English forward is one of three senior first-team players who are out of contract at the end of this season, alongside Ianis Hagi and veteran defender Leon Balogun.

As per Transfermarkt, Lawrence and Hagi are both valued at around £1.7m and would, therefore, not depart as hugely valuable assets if they were to move on for nothing. Balogun, meanwhile, turns 37 this summer and is valued at just £115k.

Rangers have some big decisions to make because their Romanian attacking midfielder has contributed with three goals and seven assists in 21 Premiership matches, whilst Lawrence has scored four goals and provided two assists in 15 league outings.

Despite both players being out of contract, there is a Gers dud who is worth even less than them, and the 49ers investment group, part of the takeover that has been agreed in principle, must ruthlessly ditch him this summer – Ross McCausland.

Why Rangers must finally sell Ross McCausland

The Northern Ireland international came up through the academy at Ibrox and emerged as a first-team regular early on in Philippe Clement’s reign in the 2023/24 campaign.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global gam

McCausland, who turns 22 this summer, has failed to kick on after making his breakthrough at senior level, though, and has been an unused substitute in 15 of his last 23 appearances in the matchday squad in all competitions.

As you can see in the table above, the Northern Irish winger has not impressed Clement or Barry Ferguson enough to earn regular game time, and he has made little impact on the pitch with the opportunities that have come his way.

The lightweight, who has lost 91% of his aerial duels in the Premiership this season, is 22 this year and has only fallen further down the pecking order, rather than progressing, since his first-team emergence, which does not suggest that he is on the right path to being a star for Rangers.

That might come as a surprise, particularly to Ferguson who had been impressed with him before even arriving back at Ibrox. Speaking in an interview in 2023, he noted that McCausland “has a great opportunity to become a big player for Rangers.” Sadly, that has not come true and is unlikely to.

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

At the time of writing (31/03/2025), McCausland is valued at £1.3m by Transfermarkt and this means that he is worth even less than Hagi and Lawrence, despite having a contract through to the summer of 2027.

This illustrates his struggles on the pitch this season because he is deemed to be worth even less than players who are set to be free agents later this year.

Rangers have sealed a "jackpot signing" who could be their new Nacho Novo

It is now down to the 49ers to finally and ruthlessly ditch the young dud, because he is not showing signs of progress at Ibrox, when the summer transfer window opens for business, with a view to replacing him with an upgrade by dipping into the market.

O histórico desse quesito no Allianz Parque começou positivamente.

Copa do Brasil-2015 (classificado)
Fluminense 2 x 1 Palmeiras – Maracanã (semifinal)
Palmeiras 2 (4) x (1) 1 Fluminense – Allianz Parque (semifinal)
