Scotland openers make the running before rain frustrates in Barbados

Scotland showed that they mean business at this T20 World Cup with Michael Jones and George Munsey forging ahead to 90 without loss in an innings cut in half by heavy rain. But the weather eventually ruined their opening match against defending champions England. An untimely rain squall, followed by a damp spot on the pitch, delayed the start by 55 minutes after Scotland had won the toss and opted to bat. A much heavier storm arrived to halt proceedings again just two balls after the powerplay with Scotland reaching 51 for nought off the back of some assured hitting from Jones, who was unbeaten on 30 from 20 balls at the time, and Munsey, who had earlier been let off by a Mark Wood no-ball.By the time the skies cleared and the ground was mopped up sufficiently, the match had been reduced to 10 overs per side. Jones and Munsey added 39 runs in the remaining 3.4 overs after the restart to push their score to 90 without loss and England were set an adjusted target of 109 to win. But as soon as they finished, the rain returned for good and condemned the contest to a wash-out.

Scotland start swiftly…

Wood found some late inswing with the first ball of the match, which had Munsey on the hop immediately. But Munsey settled to pick up Wood’s fourth ball from outside off stump and power it over mid-on for four. Munsey had reached 16 when he skied a Wood delivery towards deep third with Jos Buttler running back from behind the stumps to take the catch. However, the sound of the no-ball siren dampened England’s celebrations as replays showed Wood had over-stepped by a considerable margin.Scotland were 34 without loss after that fifth over, then Jones swung Chris Jordan for an 87-metre six which smashed a solar panel on the roof of the stand beyond deep midwicket. It was the first of three consecutive boundaries, the next a four punched through the covers and another scything through midwicket, as Jones took 15 runs off the over to power his side to the end of the powerplay on 49 for nought. He and Munsey added just two more runs, however, before more rain arrived and halted play for the best part of two hours.

… And finish stronglyPlay resumed with 3.4 overs remaining in Scotland’s innings. With Jofra Archer and Wood unavailable with a new maximum of two overs per bowler, Adil Rashid was introduced to bowl the eighth over. Jones clubbed Rashid’s first ball over long-on for six and Munsey chimed in with a four and a six to push the scoring along.England kept the faith in Jordan’s renowned death bowling despite his expensive first over and Munsey thrashed the second ball of his next over the fence at backward square for six. Rashid was more miserly in the final over, conceding just four runs off the first five balls before Jones pulled the last ball through midwicket for four to take his side to 90 without loss.Scotland captain Richie Berrington enquires about the cut-off time•Getty Images

It wasn’t a chanceless innings after the restart with Munsey surviving an England review for caught behind off a googly in Rashid’s first over and Jones making his ground despite his bat sticking in the pitch as he ran over the crease to beat a direct hit when the Scotland duo took a second run off Jordan’s last ball. At that moment, the rain returned, but the 10 overs were completed, all to no avail as the showers set in.

Archer’s homecoming

Having waited so long to play international cricket in his birthplace of Bridgetown, Archer’s comeback continued with a two-over spell, the first going for 10 runs, all to Jones who pounced on some extra width to dispatch his third ball through the covers for four. Archer’s second over was much tighter as he deployed his leg-cutter and only conceded two singles, closing with a short, fast delivery which brushed Jones’ glove as he attempted to pull and, fortunately for the batter, didn’t reach Buttler behind the stumps.Archer’s appearance in the second T20I at home against Pakistan late last month was his first professional match in more than a year following a lengthy battle with injuries. There, he took 2 for 28 and hit speeds of 92mph/148kph which further soured this rain-affected match. Amid the rain restrictions, England could only wonder what more he might have done.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

City edged out the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa to sign the highly rated 18-year-old from Rosenborg last month and while some thought the midfielder would stay with Pep Guardiola's team this season, that is not going to happen. According to Fabrizio Romano, Championship side Middlesbrough are closing in on a loan deal for the teenager, and he himself is 'happy' to make the move.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nypan is viewed as one of the best rising stars in the game, evidenced by City forking out £12.5 million ($17m) to sign him in a Norwegian league transfer record. But as Guardiola's team are in a state of rebuild, guaranteed minutes may be hard to come by. So a move to Boro, where he could be a regular, is an ideal switch as it will also get him more acclimatised to English football.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In November 2022, Nypan became the youngest player ever to represent Rosenborg at 15 years and 322 days, when he made his league debut against Jerv. After that, he chalked up 70 appearances for the Norwegian giants, scoring 14 goals along the way, before joining City.

A começar pelas origens.

'It would be incredible' – Antony urged to seal return to Real Betis by former team-mate as Man Utd outcast continues fight for Old Trafford exit

Antony's former Real Betis team-mate has urged the Spanish club to re-sign the Brazilian from Manchester United this summer. Antony enjoyed an impressive loan spell in the last six months of the 2025-26 campaign and is reportedly keen on returning to Spain. The winger is clear on his stance as he do not intend to play for any other club other Betis.

The Red Devils are having a tough time offloading Antony, one of the members of the 'bomb squad', in the summer transfer window as the winger is reportedly adamant about returning to Spain and playing for Betis, where he enjoyed a memorable spell in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

Antony was recently approached by Benfica, while Saudi Pro League clubs were also keen on signing the Selecao star, but the 25-year-old rejected all the bids. Betis are dragging it later into the window so they can secure a loan move on their terms at a time when the Red Devils will have no other option but to release him.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking to , 21-year-old Real Betis right full-back Angel Oriz, who played alongside Antony last season, has urged the Spanish to bring back the winger. He said: "I think playing with Anthony or someone of his level was incredible for me. I think he made things much easier, and in the end, I just had to give it to him and run up the field because he did the rest.

"The truth is, playing with him again would be incredible. And I hope that during this transfer window, he can make it happen and continue bringing joy to the Betis fans, which will surely be incredible."

Manchester United misfit Sancho has been the subject of a £20m offer from Roma but he has yet to commit to the prospect of moving to Italy, per Sky Sports. He has not communicated a desire to make the switch as of yet, as his former club, Borussia Dortmund, are continuing to monitor developments.

United have told Sancho that he has no future at the club and if he does indicate a willingness to move to Roma, they will press ahead with a deal. The ex-England international spent last season on loan at Chelsea but the Blues paid a penalty fee to send him back to Old Trafford.

Reports suggest that Sancho does not actually have a huge amount of suitors, and the winger may instead be loaned out again, given the dearth of options. That will become a more likely prospect if he says no to the prospect of moving to Italy.

Americans Abroad: Christian Pulisic's Milan kick off in Coppa Italia, Johnny Cardoso looks to make first impression and Chris Richards and Crystial Palace face test vs Chelsea

GOAL looks at the biggest storylines among Americans Abroad, including Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah seeking to right some wrongs

The English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, and domestic competition in Italy and Germany kick off this weekend as European football returns in full swing. For Americans Abroad, it's a chance to start a crucial season on a high note.

It's an opportunity for players who transferred this summer to make great first impressions, and for those looking took secure spots on the USMNT's 2026 World Cup squad to send a message to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah return to the pitch for AC Milan in the Coppa Italia, while new manager Max Allegri looks to make a lasting impression on the club. In Spain, it's time for Johnny Cardoso to prove himself to his new Atletico Madrid teammates. For a player who is so highly rated at the club level, but still a mystery internationally, it will be a fascinating season under Diego Simeone.

Meanwhile, the first American to lift silverware this season, Chris Richards, takes the pitch on Sunday with Crystal Palace. After their Community Shield win over Liverpool last weekend, they'll look to start things on top against Chelsea.

GOAL looks ahead at some of the biggest storylines to follow among Americans Abroad this weekend.

Richards and Palace take on Chelsea

Coming off their Community Shield victory over Liverpool, the Eagles face another member of the "big six" in England on opening weekend. Chelsea overhauled their roster this summer and are considered Premier League contenders, so it's a big opportunity for both Richards and Palace to prove themselves – again.

In two meetings last season, the clubs split. In all-time head-to-head meetings, Chelsea have won 20 and drawn twice, with just four wins for the Eagles.  For Richards, it's an opportunity to establish himself early on in the campaign as one of the top defenders in the league.

He'll be tasked with taking on Chelsea's blistering attack that features Cole Palmer, Neto, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap and more. Chelsea is coming off a title-winning FIFA Club World Cup. Palace, meanwhile, won the FA Cup in the spring, and the Community Shield last weekend. This one should be good.

Pulisic and Musah seek fresh start

Christian Pulisic is reportedly set to be fit in the race for Milan's competitive debut on Sunday, when they take on Bari in the Coppa Italia. These two teams haven't met in nearly 15 years, with their last competitive match coming in 2011 – a 1-1 draw in Serie A.

The Serie B side will look to pull the upset on Sunday. For Pulisic and Musah, it's a chance to right some wrongs from last season. Milan made it to the final of the 2024-25 Coppa Italia, but fell to Bologna 1-0 , and missed out on European competition this season as a result.

For Pulisic, it will be his first competitive minutes since May after he opted out of playing for the USMNT in the Gold Cup. Over the past two weeks, he picked up a slight knock that held him out of Milan's final two preseason fixtures, but he is available for selection on Sunday, paving the way for him to make a statement performance to begin the campaign.

Musah, meanwhile, was a regular participant in all five of Milan's preseason matches, and he started the final three. He's been linked with a move away this transfer window, with Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Napoli reportedly interested. But as things stand, he's still a Milan player.

After a rather disastrous 2024-25 season across all competitions, Sunday is Milan's chance to start things on a high – it's win or bust. The should be looked at as favorites, under Allegri, to compete for the Coppa Italia.

Cardoso looks to make first impression

In Spain, Cardoso and Atletico Madrid kick off their La Liga campaign against Espanyol on Sunday, and this is an major moment for the young midfielder.

He has big shoes to fill in the middle of the park following the exit of Rodrigo De Paul, who was signed by Lionel Messi's Inter Miami earlier, and a lot will be asked of him by manager Diego Simeone. The 23-year-old featured in their last two preseason friendlies, both victories, but he still has competition for a spot in the XI.

Atleti take on Espanyol to begin the season – a club who have been a struggle for them to beat in recent years. Their last four matches, dating back to 2022, have all been draws, as Simeone's men failed to get over the line against the Catalan club.

Cardoso, meanwhile, will look to make a good impression and put some of his USMNT woes behind him. He has yet to find his footing on the international stage and is searching for a starting spot under Simeone so that he can continue to show Pochettino why he warrants a selection in the build-up to the World Cup.

Former Liverpool and Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho was among the goal-scorers during a bleak evening for Neymar and Santos. The one-game ban means Neymar, who has scored three goals in 11 Brazilian Serie A fixtures this season, will miss their next fixture against Bahia on Sunday and the 33-year-old admitted after the defeat it was one of the worst results of his illustrious career.

WHAT NEYMAR SAID

Speaking to reporters after the game, Neymar said: "I'm completely disappointed with our game. The fans have the right to protest in all sorts of ways, obviously without physical violence. But cursing and insulting people today is perfectly acceptable.

"I feel incredibly ashamed; I've never experienced anything like this in my life. I'm crying out of anger, at everything. Unfortunately, I can't help in every way. Today was terrible; that's the reality.

"To sum it all up: it was sh*t. It's a disgrace to play that kind of game wearing a Santos jersey. Everyone needs to put their head down, go home, and think about what they want to do. With today's attitude, if we have to do what we did on the field, we won't even need to show up again on Wednesday."

Revealed: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta met with Eberechi Eze a MONTH before hijacking Spurs move for Crystal Palace ace

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta reportedly met with Eberechi Eze a month before sensationally swooping to snatch the Crystal Palace ace right out of Tottenham’s grasp in a blockbuster £68 million ($91m) raid. The move, which comes just days after Kai Havertz was ruled out with a knee injury, has sent shockwaves through North London, leaving Spurs supporters fuming over another missed target.

  • Arsenal snap up Eze from Palace

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to Arteta and Berta held a secret meeting with Eze a month ago, long before Tottenham thought they had the deal in the bag. The forward was immediately convinced by Arteta’s vision and the prospect of lining up at The Emirates. The Gunners didn’t make a move at the time, having just splashed £63m ($85m) on Viktor Gyokeres, but the groundwork was already in place.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tottenham believed they had Eze locked down after ten days of talks with Palace, agreeing on a package worth £55m ($74m) plus add-ons. On Wednesday morning, the deal was said to be virtually complete, with Eze’s personal terms also sorted. But Palace, reluctant to lose their talisman ahead of their Conference League play-off clash with Fredrikstad, delayed signing off on the deal. That hesitation opened the door for Arsenal. By Wednesday afternoon, Arsenal stormed in with a straight £60m offer, plus bonuses matching Eze's release clause of £68m, blowing Spurs’ negotiations out of the water.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arteta hadn’t planned to push for another attacker so soon, but the serious injury to Havertz forced a change of strategy. With Gabriel Jesus still sidelined and only Gyokeres fully fit, Arsenal needed another attacking outlet. Eze’s flair, versatility, and Premier League experience made him the perfect solution.

    WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM?

This is not the first time Tottenham have been left red-faced in the transfer market. Earlier this summer, they missed out on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, another creative English midfielder who was high on their wishlist. Even attempts to sweeten the Eze deal by offering Richarlison as part of the package couldn’t shift Palace’s stance. To make matters worse, Spurs are also tracking Manchester City’s Brazilian winger Savinho, but City are digging in their heels and refusing to sell.
