In Focus: Brenet can offer new spark to right side of Celtic defence

As reported by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Celtic are chasing a highly-rated right-back who could be a long-term replacement for Swedish star Mikael Lustig.

What’s the story?

After completing the signing of Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen last week, the Hoops will undoubtedly be attempting to add more names to the squad this summer as they look to maintain their domestic success and become a force in the UEFA Champions League.

One man they’re interested in is Netherlands international Joshua Brenet of PSV Eindhoven. That’s according to De Telegraaf who say the Hoops are one of six clubs interested in signing him this summer.

Rated at £3.4m on Transfermarkt, he would certainly appear to be within reach resource wise of the Glasgow side, however the Dutch paper suggest competition could come from the likes of Serie A side Fiorentina and the English Premier League’s Watford.

Who is he?

Brenet is a 23-year-old right-back who has emerged as one of the brightest Dutch prospects in the position. He’s made over 100 appearances for PSV, helping them win Eredivisie in 2014/15 and 2015/16.

His form has been sufficient enough that he’s received international caps for the Netherlands, making his debut against Belgium in 2016.

With 23 European appearances to his name also, it’s clear he’s of the quality to be a success in the Scottish Premiership. He featured in the UEFA Champions League on four occasions last season.

With Mikael Lustig now 30 years old, the Hoops need to start thinking about a seamless long-term transition between the Swedish international and a successor and bringing in Brenet as competition initially seems like a great step forward in that regard.

With the versatility to also play on the left hand side of the defence with no dip in performance, he can also provide cover for the likes of Kieran Tierney.

Given his pedigree, this is likely a signing that would excited Hoops fans, the kind of player that can really help turn them into a European force next term.

West Ham fans don’t want club to sign Andre Gray

According to reports in The Mirror, West Ham United are lining up a £15m summer move for Burnley striker Andre Gray.

Irons manager Slaven Bilic is keen to bring in at least two new strikers this summer, and he could make a move for a player that scored nine Premier League goals in first top flight season.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that contract talks between the Clarets and the 26-year-old had stalled over his £70,000-a-week demands, and with just a year left on his current deal the Lancashire outfit could sell him in the coming weeks rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

West Ham supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, and the majority do not want the club to sign Gray.

While some described him as a “Championship player”, others want the east London outfit to show a little more ambition in the transfer market.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Replacing Alberto Moreno is vital for Liverpool; they cannot rely on Milner

Liverpool have turned down an £11m bid from Napoli for left-back Alberto Moreno, according to the Liverpool Echo.

What’s the story?

The Merseyside outfit are believed to be willing to sell the Spaniard, but they are standing firm on their valuation.

The Liverpool Echo claims that the Reds was £15m, and due to the level of interest, they are confident that someone will pay their asking price.

Moreno had a bit-part role under manager Jurgen Klopp last season, starting just two Premier League games and coming on as a substitute in a further 10.

James Milner, who traditionally plays in the middle of the park, assumed the left-back role instead.

Moreno joined the Reds from Sevilla in 2015 in a reported £12m deal.

Can Milner continue at left-back?

There has never been any questions over Milner’s work ethic, and when he was asked to move into an unfamiliar position he just got on with the job.

The 31-year-old did a decent enough job to keep the position throughout the season, but he began to tire towards the end of the campaign.

If Liverpool want to launch a serious title bid, as well as impress in the Champions League, they need a sharp and strong squad.

While Milner did well at left-back, he is on the wrong side of 30, and therefore trying to cope with pacy wide men will only get more challenging.

If Moreno does leave, it would make sense for Klopp to jump into the market for a recognised left-back.

In Focus: Arsenal boss Wenger playing a dangerous game with Sanchez

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that Alexis Sanchez will not be sold this summer, reports Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

Sanchez’s future at the Emirates remains shrouded in doubt as he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract.

Widespread reports have suggested that wage demands have played a big role in the stalemate, while the Gunners’ lack of Champions League football this season may also be an issue.

The Chile international recently told Radio Sport in his homeland that he wants to play in the elite European competition.

Arsenal can only offer the Europa League this season, but Wenger has played down the speculation that his star player could leave.

Sky Sports quotes the Frenchman as saying:

“The decision has been made and we will stick to that. The decision is not to sell. I don’t give too much importance to things that are translated, you know. The whole interview that I got didn’t really mean that.”

Manchester City and Chelsea have been among the clubs rumoured to be interested in Sanchez, but it is Paris Saint-Germain who are in the driving seat to sign him, according to The Telegraph.

Is Wenger making the right call?

If the Arsenal manager sticks to his word and refuses to sell Sanchez, then there could be trouble ahead.

The 28-year-old’s current contract will expire at the end of the upcoming season, so if Wenger does not accept a bid this summer, his player could leave for nothing in a year’s time.

A player of Sanchez’s calibre should not be allowed to leave a club without a substantial fee coming in return.

In addition, Wenger’s stubbornness could backfire on the pitch, as the Chilean may take a stand and refuse to play if he is denied a move away from the club.

Even if he does play, the mood of the dressing room could change as they know that Sanchez may not be fully committed to the cause.

West Ham United fans worried Neymar move will result in Lanzini exit

Not many people would think that Neymar’s future has an impact on West Ham United, but the club’s fans fear that it will in a negative way.

Barcelona confirmed in a statement on their official website on Wednesday that the Brazilian has informed them that he wants to leave the club.

Paris Saint-Germain are widely expected to seal the attacker’s signature in a world-record €222m (£198m) transfer, which would leave Barca with a vacancy.

Mundo Deportivo claim that the Spanish giants hope to sign Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho as a replacement by Monday, but so far the Reds have refused to sell.

It was recently stated by Bleacher Report that the Merseyside outfit could turn their attention to West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini if they lose Coutinho before the end of the transfer window this month.

When the news of Neymar’s desire to leave was confirmed by Barcelona, supporters of the Hammers began to worry that their star player could be off.

Everton fans impressed with Keane, Pickford performances in Europa tie

Everton have now played four competitive fixtures this season, which is allowing the club’s summer signings to find their feet.

The Merseyside outfit have recruited eight new players during this window, with the latest arrival being Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City.

Thursday night’s Europa League playoff tie against Hajduk Split came too early for the midfielder, but a number of new faces were on show.

Among them were Cuco Martina, Davy Klaassen, Wayne Rooney, Michael Keane and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The match ended in a 2-0 victory for Ronald Koeman’s men thanks to goals from Keane and Idrissa Gueye.

The result gives Everton a strong advantage heading into the second leg, and plenty of fans were quick to praise the team.

Keane and Pickford in particular impressed the supporters, who believe that the reported combined fee of around £60m for the pair was worth it.

Everton will next be in action on Monday night when they face two-time Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur fans delighted Harry Kane is back scoring goals

Tottenham Hotspur have a had a mixed start to the English Premier League season with one win, one draw and one defeat in their opening three matches.

After becoming one of the top team in the countries last term, that’s not the start to the season Spurs fans were hoping for and concerns about their ability to find consistent form at Wembley Stadium are growing.

One of the key reasons they’ve not been reaching their full potential is the lack of goalscoring from key man Harry Kane. The English striker didn’t find the net once in August, seemingly unable to find the chances that made him such a success last term.

However, fans believe that could be about to change after he hit a brace just one day into September, for England against Malta in Friday night’s World Cup Qualification match.

Will breaking his short scoring drought give him the confidence and the platform to go on and bang in the goals for Spurs on a regular basis now?

Spurs supporters took to Twitter to share their delight he is back on form and ready for next week’s English Premier League action…

Two big questions need answering after a rejection filled Chelsea transfer window

Deadline day had become a dull affair recently. Clubs had seemingly become more professional, slicker at getting their summer business done in good time rather than scrambling around for last-minute deals.Throw more money into the mix, though, and things change. This summer’s market has been bizarre, it’s been shocking, and it’s been over the top. None of that prepared us for a deadline day of madness, involving Manchester City’s attempts to sign Alexis Sanchez, Aresnal’s efforts to replace him by throwing silly money at Monaco, only to be rebuffed in unclear circumstances by Thomas Lemar, and Chelsea’s odd day.It started off with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opting to sign for Liverpool after turning down the chance to join the Blues yesterday,Âand it ended with Ross Barkley rejecting the Stamford Bridge club, too.

It was a strange transfer window for Chelsea, who can count some good signings. Despite rejections and apparent power struggles behind the scenes, the Blues still managed to attract sought-after talent like Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata to the Bridge, whilst others like Davide Zappacosta – rumoured to be moving from Torino to ChelseaÂ- and Danny Drinkwater could turn out to be very clever signings indeed should the deals get over the line.

But the window was also marked by rejections. It’s strange, for the champions, managed by a respected coach and playing Champions League football again next season, to be in such a position. As well as Barkley and Chamberlain, Dominic Solanke decided to choose Liverpool over staying with the champions, whilst Fernando Llorente has joined Tottenham despite prolonged interest from Conte.

There’s no other word for it but ‘weird’. It’s strange that Chelsea can have a transfer window where players like Danny Drinkwater and Alvaro Morata can look like signings to strengthen a title-winning squad, whilst at the same time have so many failures and blows to look back on. It’s also an odd state of affairs when players like Chamberlain and Llorente would choose Liverpool and Tottenham over Chelsea. After all, they’ve turned down the champions for clubs who probably won’t have the same chance of winning the league next season.

And so, despite Chelsea’s successes this window, it’s legitimate to ask exactly why they’ve been turned down so much by players opting for clubs that don’t seem as glamorous as the Blues.

The transfer window has been an overall success for Chelsea, but their squad still looks thin given their Champions League commitments. And with rumours that Antonio Conte hasn’t been happy with his club’s business all summer, two questions still remain about Chelsea’s window: why exactly have so many players opted to reject the club and go elsewhere, despite Chelsea being champions, and just how angry is Conte about the whole situation?

Mourinho insists Man United midfielder has a role to play this season

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has insisted that club captain Michael Carrick will play his part for the Red Devils this season.

Carrick signed a new 12-month contract with the 20-time English champions in the latter stages of the 2016-17 campaign, before being appointed club captain following Wayne Rooney’s departure.

Carrick has not played a single minute of Premier League football this term, however, with Marouane Fellaini, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera all battling for midfield positions.

Mourinho has hailed the form of Matic and Fellaini, but the Portuguese has said that Carrick is still an important player at the Theatre of Dreams despite his lack of action.

Mourinho told reporters, in quotes picked up by Man United’s official website:

“We gave Michael Carrick a contract because we think he’s a good player and an important player. He’s just in a team where I think, in this moment, Matic and Fellaini are in the best form that I have ever seen them.

“I never saw Matic playing so well. I never saw Fellaini playing so well. He [Carrick] is in a team with these two guys, playing absolutely phenomenal.

“For Carrick and for Ander, it’s just patience because their time will arrive. They are going to be important players for us, for sure. That’s the team, that’s the squad. We cannot play with [only] 11 guys.”

Carrick joined Man United from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2006 after two impressive seasons at White Hart Lane.

During his time at Old Trafford, the defensive midfielder has made more than 450 appearances, landing five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League trophy in the process.

The Red Devils will continue their 2017-18 Premier League campaign with a trip to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Villa fans react negatively to club’s Twitter post on record-breaking midfielder

Gareth Barry became the Premier League’s all-time leading appearance maker on Monday night when he turned out for West Bromwich Albion against Arsenal.

Indeed, 633 Premier League appearances saw Barry move ahead of Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs as the veteran midfielder made history at the Emirates Stadium.

Two of Barry’s former clubs – Aston Villa and Everton – have both paid tribute to the 36-year-old on social media, and the posts were certainly well received by the two sets of supporters.

On Tuesday morning, however, Villa went another step further in an article which argued that Barry was the club’s greatest player of all time.

As expected, the post brought a reaction from the Villa supporters, and it was not too positive as many argued that former centre-back Paul McGrath should be considered as the club’s finest ever player.

Barry made 365 of his 633 Premier League appearances at Villa, scoring 41 times in the process, but the now Championship club’s supporters do not agree that the midfielder is the best player to have ever pulled on the Villa shirt.
