Renegades take Melbourne derby thriller as Stars bottle chase

Melbourne Renegades conjured a rousing comeback victory to seriously dent crosstown rival Melbourne Stars’ already slim finals chances in a tense contest at a roofed Marvel Stadium.Chasing 163, Stars were cruising after an 88-run opening partnership between Joe Clarke and Tom Rogers. They still appeared well in the box seat needing 21 runs off 25 balls with seven wickets in hand before crumbling under pressure. With Stars requiring 12 runs off the final over, seamer Will Sutherland held his nerve and ran out Luke Wood on the fourth delivery. But Nick Larkin then hit a boundary and needed a six off the last delivery to force a super over.A composed Sutherland landed a wide yorker as Renegades again claimed the bragging rights in the Melbourne Derby after prevailing in a controversial contest at the MCG on January 3.Renegades seamer Kane Richardson finished with 2 for 17 in his 100th BBL game, as bottom-placed Stars’ finals chances have virtually been extinguished.Related

Fawad turns back the clock in Renegades return

Veteran spinner Fawad Ahmed’s last appearance with Renegades was eight years ago, but the 40-year-old returned as an injury replacement for experienced batter Shaun Marsh. He came into the attack in the sixth over, but was hit for six by Rogers. As he so often has done over his career, Fawad fought back and dismissed Rogers after Sutherland claimed a superb juggling catch around the boundary rope. With Stars starting to wobble, Fawad bowled a maiden in the 13th over and then came back in a pivotal 17th over where he conceded just four runs to ensure a tight finish. Fawad finished with 1 for 20 from his four overs but left the field in the dying overs with an apparent knee injury. Renegades will hope it is not serious after Fawad proved he has something left in the tank.Sam Harper continued his good form with another fifty•Getty Images

Stars fail to cash in on good fortune

Marvel Stadium’s roof was closed after oppressive weather in Melbourne with temperatures hitting 37 degrees Celsius when the match started.Off to a flier, Clarke received fortune when he hit the roof off a delivery from Sutherland to end the third over. Under the BBL’s playing conditions, a ball hitting the roof is deemed a six having once been a dead ball under old rules.Had there been no roof, Clarke probably would have provided a catching opportunity and he cashed in to plunder Renegades’ attack with a blistering half-century. Stars had more good fortune in the 16th over when Beau Webster hit a delivery straight up in the air before hitting the roof. But he couldn’t capitalise and holed out shortly later as Stars spiralled much like their infamous defeat against Renegades in the BBL grand final in 2019.The heartbreaking defeat has almost surely ended their finals chances in what has been another disappointing season for Stars.

Finch might need to move up the order

Aaron Finch has batted almost exclusively at No. 4 this season much like the role he had slotted into for Australia. He had batted quite well with a couple of half-centuries before going off the boil with three straight single digits heading into this match.Coming to the crease in the sixth over, Finch started aggressively in contrast to his fairly sedate batting this season, where he has been intent on being the glue of the innings. He smashed three boundaries in his first five deliveries capped by smacking legspinner Adam Zampa down the ground. But on the next delivery he was deceived by a slower delivery to hole out to long-on.Finch might need to return to opening, where he has had so much success during his long career. Renegades’ batting has been a mishmash this season and held together at the moment by Sam Harper, who smashed his third straight half-century in a purple patch. A late flurry from Jonathan Wells, who hit 44 off 24 balls, powered Renegades to a competitive total that looked beyond them.

Quieter derby for Zampa

During the last Melbourne Derby, chaos ensued when Stars skipper Zampa attempted to run out Renegades batter Tom Rogers at the non-striker’s end.Zampa was jeered by some of the 38,5000 fans at the MCG and the incident sparked global debate. It was a low-key outing this time around for Zampa, who led a shorthanded Stars attack without quick Nathan Coulter-Nile and allrounder Marcus Stoinis. He juggled his bowlers around with young seamer Brody Couch snaring the wickets of Martin Guptill and Rogers although he was expensive in his season debut. After missing out on Australia’s upcoming Test tour of India, Zampa had a point to prove and he claimed the key wicket of counterpart Finch through trademark guile.

Revealed: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta met with Eberechi Eze a MONTH before hijacking Spurs move for Crystal Palace ace

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta reportedly met with Eberechi Eze a month before sensationally swooping to snatch the Crystal Palace ace right out of Tottenham’s grasp in a blockbuster £68 million ($91m) raid. The move, which comes just days after Kai Havertz was ruled out with a knee injury, has sent shockwaves through North London, leaving Spurs supporters fuming over another missed target.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to Arteta and Berta held a secret meeting with Eze a month ago, long before Tottenham thought they had the deal in the bag. The forward was immediately convinced by Arteta’s vision and the prospect of lining up at The Emirates. The Gunners didn’t make a move at the time, having just splashed £63m ($85m) on Viktor Gyokeres, but the groundwork was already in place.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tottenham believed they had Eze locked down after ten days of talks with Palace, agreeing on a package worth £55m ($74m) plus add-ons. On Wednesday morning, the deal was said to be virtually complete, with Eze’s personal terms also sorted. But Palace, reluctant to lose their talisman ahead of their Conference League play-off clash with Fredrikstad, delayed signing off on the deal. That hesitation opened the door for Arsenal. By Wednesday afternoon, Arsenal stormed in with a straight £60m offer, plus bonuses matching Eze's release clause of £68m, blowing Spurs’ negotiations out of the water.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arteta hadn’t planned to push for another attacker so soon, but the serious injury to Havertz forced a change of strategy. With Gabriel Jesus still sidelined and only Gyokeres fully fit, Arsenal needed another attacking outlet. Eze’s flair, versatility, and Premier League experience made him the perfect solution.

    WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM?

This is not the first time Tottenham have been left red-faced in the transfer market. Earlier this summer, they missed out on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, another creative English midfielder who was high on their wishlist. Even attempts to sweeten the Eze deal by offering Richarlison as part of the package couldn’t shift Palace’s stance. To make matters worse, Spurs are also tracking Manchester City’s Brazilian winger Savinho, but City are digging in their heels and refusing to sell.

Hampshire stumble in small chase as Notts sense opportunity

Visitors five down and still 85 from victory after Pennington, Paterson rock top order

ECB Reporters Network19-May-2024

Joe Clarke’s fifty helped give Notts a chance of victory•Getty Images

Hampshire’s opportunity to notch a first win of the season is in the balance after a fast-moving third day of their Vitality County Championship match at Trent Bridge left them with still much work to do.Chasing a modest 169 to win, Hampshire ended the day still 85 runs away from their target at 84 for 5 and probably a man short unless Tom Prest can bat with the injured shoulder that has kept him off the field since tea on day one.Nottinghamshire had been bowled out for 209 in their second innings by tea, with veteran quick Kyle Abbott and offspinner Felix Organ taking three wickets each after Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes had made half-centuries.But Hampshire then slumped to 44 for 5 as Dillon Pennington and Dane Paterson led a determined effort with the ball by the home side before Fletcha Middleton and James Fuller saw out the final overs to calm their nerves.Still eight runs behind at 33 for 1 overnight, Nottinghamshire stumbled into early trouble as the pattern of the first two innings repeated itself.Against a ball that was only 15 overs old, they lost wickets in each of Abbott’s opening three overs. Will Young edged to wicketkeeper Ben Brown from a ball that lifted and left him, Ben Slater was pushed back in his crease to be leg before and Tom Moores saw his off stump uprooted by one angled in from wide by the veteran South African seamer. At 44 for 4 – effectively 3 for 4 – Nottinghamshire were in a difficult spot that could have turned worse still had Clarke not been dropped on 17 at 65 for 4. It was Michael Neser at first slip – substitute for the injured Prest – whose hands let him down, a second such error of the match by the Australian and a fifth for Hampshire overall.Clarke punished the mistake by passing fifty for the fourth time this season as he and Haynes added 96 for the fifth wicket before the former was out for 57, gloving a catch to Brown after being tempted by a short delivery from Mohammad Abbas.Haynes completed his half-century from 111 balls, but against the spin combination of Liam Dawson and Organ on a three-day old pitch Nottinghamshire’s hopes of building a substantial lead unravelled.Organ struck the first blow as Haynes was caught at short leg via an inside edge on to pad, picking up a second when Lyndon James, trying to help one round the corner, gave an easy catch to short fine leg.Dawson then claimed two in consecutive overs as Olly Stone’s paddle sweep looped up gently for James Vince to catch running across from slip before Dillon Pennington was trapped leg before. Organ wrapped things up by having Calvin Harrison stumped, leaving Hampshire needing 169 to win. With Nick Gubbins missing the match on paternity leave and Prest unlikely to bat, it was never likely to be a straightforward task against the Nottinghamshire attack, even with 127 overs at their disposal.Knowing the potency of the new ball so far in this contest, Hampshire made no attempt to hurry yet still found themselves two down for 15 inside the first 10 overs, thanks to two superlative catches.Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed took the first, plucking the ball out of the air one-handed at mid-on as Ali Orr mistimed his shot horribly against Pennington, who picked up his second wicket soon afterwards. This time Harrison produced the athleticism, using every inch of his 6ft 4ins plus a fully extended right arm to grab the ball a good eight feet off the ground. Organ, the man out, had aimed a rather wild slash at a ball wide of off stump but was nonplussed nonetheless that it had not cleared the cordon. It was enough for Nottinghamshire to sense an opportunity and they took full advantage of Hampshire’s frailty.Skipper Vince, on whom much seemed to rest, fell for 6, leg before to a full delivery from Paterson that he was trying to work to leg, Dawson hit James straight into the hands of short cover and Brown lost his off stump to a swinging delivery from Paterson, leaving Hampshire 44 for 5 and facing a fight for survival.

Transfer triangle! Liverpool ready to hijack Newcastle's move for Hugo Ekitike after Alexander Isak approach as initial talks opened with Eintracht Frankfurt

Liverpool's renewed focus on strengthening their attacking options has gained urgency after their attempt to sign Newcastle's Isak met resistance. They have seemingly made public their willingness to offer up to £120m ($161m) for the Swedish forward, but Newcastle’s firm stance that the striker is not available has complicated matters. Moreover, the player himself has not communicated his desire to leave the club, but if Liverpool continue to push, there might be a change in the scenario, as revealed by The report also claims that the Geordies are determined to make their own statement by landing Ekitike, having held positive talks.

With both Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz potentially on their way out, Liverpool have made acquiring a top-tier centre-forward a priority. Ekitike fits the bill after his impressive output last season – 22 goals and 12 assists across 48 appearances in all competitions – played a key role in Frankfurt securing a third-place finish in the Bundesliga.

    THE EXPLANATION

Rodgers can forget Scales by unleashing Celtic's "powerful" star instead

Will Celtic secure their spot at Hampden once again?

As the Hoops chase a sixth treble in just nine seasons, they’ll welcome Hibernian to Parkhead in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.

Well, David Gray’s side certainly cannot be taken lightly, considering they’re unbeaten in 13 top-flight matches, Hibs’ longest sequence in a single season for 75 years, a run that features a 2-1 victory over Celtic at Easter Road a fortnight ago, while 7,000 Hibees will make the trip to Glasgow for what promises to be a fantastic occasion.

Brendan Rodgers has won all 19 Scottish Cup ties he has ever been part of as a manager, hoisting the trophy aloft three times to date, and if he’s going to keep that streak going, the boss will have to cope without an “absolutely pivotal” member of his defence.

Liam Scales' injury latest

After Auston Trusty was forced off in Paisley, he was replaced by Liam Scales, who Rodgers said “came in and did really well”, albeit with the Irishman now set to miss the weekend clash after injuring his cheekbone.

Liam Scales

Regardless, Scales has rather lost his place in the starting lineup to Trusty this season, as the table below outlines.

Pairing

Matches started together

Carter-Vickers & Trusty

22

Carter-Vickers & Scales

12

Trusty & Scales

10

Total matches

Despite primarily being out of favour, Scales was introduced at halftime of the League Cup Final in December, after which Rodgers described the Irish international as “brilliant”, adding the decision to introduce him as a substitute was made because “we looked so clunky and couldn’t get through the pitch… I didn’t like that”.

Scales has therefore been unfortunate to be an unused substitute on 12 occasions this season, while he will once again miss out on some much-needed game time come Sunday, having been “absolutely pivotal” to the Celts’ success not too long ago, in the words of his manager.

As alluded to earlier, Hibs come into this tie as the most in-form team in the country, moving up to third in the Premiership following last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Hearts in the Edinburgh derby.

As noted by John Greechan of Edinburgh News, Hibs boast ‘the ideal blend of forward firepower’ required to cause Celtic problems, while manager Gray says his team have had a “fantastic week” and are full of confidence.

Thus, without Scales’ extra recovery pace as the Hoops aim to deal with Martin Boyle, who former Celtic and Hibs manager Neil Lennon believes will be the visitors’ primary danger man, Rodgers will instead need to call upon that man Trusty once again.

Auston Trusty's start to life at Celtic

Celtic paid a reported fee of around £6m for Trusty’s services last summer, arriving from Sheffield United.

Well, this move has certainly panned out well, with Jack Tanner of Football League World noting that the American international has been ‘brilliant’ in hoops, while Matthew Lindsay of the Herald labels his Champions League performances as ‘outstanding’.

Trusty started each of Celtic’s last nine Champions League fixtures, including both legs against Bayern Munich, making 34 appearances for the club overall, establishing himself as Cameron Carter-Vickers’ first-choice partner, as noted by Matthew Elder of the Scotsman.

The “powerful” American – as hailed by Rodgers – did suffer a head injury against St Mirren last Saturday night, thereby substituted before the half-hour mark, requiring ‘a few stitches’.

He is expected to be available for Sunday, however, making him the perfect man to lineup in the centre of defence once again, amid the absence of Scales.

Rodgers can totally forget Jota by unleashing Celtic star who's "on fire"

Ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie against Hibernian, Brendan Rodgers should unleash Celtic’s “on fire” winger who’s outperforming Jota.

What Mathys Tel is now thinking about signing for Tottenham permanently

It is no secret that Tottenham Hotspur wish to make Mathys Tel’s stay indefinite after his initial loan move from Bayern Munich, but it is now believed that manager Ange Postecoglou has been given a real bit of encouragement as he looks to make it happen.

Likelihood of Mathys Tel staying at Tottenham uncertain

While Postecoglou is convinced that Tel is staying at Spurs for the long-haul, there is still uncertainty surrounding the 19-year-old’s future in north London.

£400k-per-week forward has privately refused to rule out joining Tottenham

Spurs appear to have been given a transfer boost.

Tel put pen to paper on a potential six-year contract at Tottenham, if the club opt to trigger the £45 million buy-option in his temporary deal, but German media have reported that his stay is certainly not a foregone conclusion.

Tel is believed to still be keen on a move to Man United, and he could even decide to remain at Bayern for the 2025/2026 season.

“There were also talks with Manchester United who were interested in Mathys Tel’s signature,” wrote Bundesliga insider Christian Falk on his own version of the Dailybriefing recently.

“Tel was certainly open to the move, but United weren’t prepared to pay the loan fee Bayern Munich were demanding at the time (€5m). So, you see, there was a huge difference to the offer Tottenham came to the table with. Whether Tel stays with Bayern beyond the summer or moves on, it’s entirely up to him. If he can make the step to United, he would like to do it.”

The versatile teenage attacker has already impressed in flashes since his switch to N17, so much so that sections of supporters are extremely keen to see Tel don Lilywhite next term and beyond.

While a summer move to Old Trafford or staying at Bayern hasn’t been ruled out yet, a report by GiveMeSport has shared some good news for Spurs in regard to Tel’s future.

Tottenham given "significant boost" in permanent Mathys Tel deal

As per journalist Dean Jones, writing for GMS, Tottenham have been handed a “significant boost” as they eye a permanent deal for Tel.

This comes in the form of him being very happy with life in London right now, with Tel apparently giving “indications” that he is interested in making his Hotspur Way stay permanent behind-the-scenes.

Mathys Tel

As such, Spurs are now growing increasingly optimistic about signing the forward indefinitely this summer, with Tel’s new-found stance giving Postecoglou’s side a real reason to be confident.

This follows on from Postecoglou’s comments, stating that Tel is “100 per cent” wants to be in north London.

“Yes, 100 per cent. I am more than 100 per cent sure because he took so much time, was so diligent about finding out everything,” said Postecoglou when asked if Tel really wanted to join Spurs in January.

“He had other options so it gave me more confidence that we are getting the right kind of mentality, the right kind of player.”
