Rangers can sign a Roofe upgrade in Cutrone

Rangers are reportedly interested in signing an Italian striker this summer who could be a big upgrade on Kemar Roofe in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad at Ibrox.

According to Football Scotland, the Light Blues have been offered to chance to sign Patrick Cutrone, who has struggled immensely during his time in England.

After netting only three goals for Wolves in 28 appearances, the 24-year-old has spent time out on loan with Fiorentina, Valencia and Empoli, where his disappointing form in front of goal has continued, with just eight goals in 72 appearances across those spells.

However, he was prolific during his time at AC Milan, hitting 43 goals in 67 appearances for their academy side before establishing himself in the first team, where he managed 27 goals in 90 appearances before his £23m move to Wolves in 2019.

Upon his signing at Wolves, then-manager Nuno Espirito Santo was full of praise for Cutrone, saying: “His characteristics, he’s a fighter, and we appreciate it. He’s been working very well for the team. He’s a player that brings a lot of energy when he goes on the pitch.”

This suggests that he is simply suffering from a lack of confidence, and if he were given regular opportunities at Rangers, it would surely only be a matter of time before he rediscovers his goalscoring touch.

Should Cutrone make the move to Ibrox and replicate the form he showed at Milan, he could prove to be a significant upgrade on Roofe, who managed 16 goals in 36 appearances for the Gers last season.

However, he has picked up five separate injury issues during his two years at Ibrox and has far too often been unavailable when Rangers needed him most.

Cutrone, who reportedly earns £63k per week at Wolves, is also five years younger than Roofe, so he could be a much better long-term option in Van Bronckhorst’s side. Also, he has only missed a handful of games in his career through injury, so he could be a much more reliable member of the squad.

Given that Alfredo Morelos’ future is still in doubt, attacking reinforcements at Rangers could still be required, so Ross Wilson should definitely consider bringing Cutrone to Ibrox.

Rangers interested in Theo Bongonda

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s pursuit of reinforcements in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that Rangers are one of four clubs eyeing up a potential swoop for Theo Bongonda ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He Tweeted: “After confirmation with his agent Fouad Ben Kouider, nothing has yet been decided in Théo Bongonda’s file where #Fenerbahçe, #Olympiakos and #RangersFC joined with #AlAin interested clubs by the attacker of #KRCGenk. To be continued.”

Ross Wilson is plotting a swoop for the winger and it has been reported that Genk want a fee in the region of €7m (£6m) for his services this summer. Although, it remains to be seen whether or not the Scottish giants will firm up their interest with a bid.

Ryan Kent 2.0

By securing a deal to sign Bongonda before the end of the window, Rangers can land their new Ryan Kent to be a wing wizard in the Premiership.

The DR Congo international has been in sensational form for Genk in the Belgian Pro League in recent seasons and has shown that he has the quality to make a huge impact in the final third on a consistent basis.

Last season, he scored 12 goals and set up two – creating seven big chances – whilst playing out wide on the right as a left-footed player. This came after he found the back of the net 16 times and provided eight assists – creating ten big chances – in 2020/21.

Bongonda is a gem capable of scoring and creating goals at an impressive rate from the wing, cutting in onto his stronger foot as an inverted winger much like Kent is for the Gers.

The English attacker is a right-footed player who typically lines up on the left and he has racked up 12 goals and 17 assists in the last two Premiership campaigns combined. He has proven himself in a Light Blues shirt and produced many moments of magic for the fans to enjoy over the years.

In a swoop for the Genk attacker, Rangers can now find a clone of the ex-Liverpool man to play on the right side of the front three. This would leave Gio van Bronckhorst with two magical wingers capable of scoring and creating goals at will, which is an exciting prospect for the Dutch head coach and the supporters ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Man City identify Serge Gnabry as Sterling replacement

Manchester City have identified Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry as a direct replacement for Raheem Sterling, should the latter leave the Premier League champions this summer, according to reports shared by City Xtra.

The Lowdown: Sterling linked with exit

The England international has been at the centre of strong links away from the Etihad Stadium, with a move to Chelsea heavily speculated.

With the World Cup at the end of the year approaching all the time, the 27-year-old has indicated his willingness to leave Manchester, with game-time crucial in the build-up to the tournament.

Having entered the last 12 months of his City contract, the attacker is expected to command a fee in the region of £45m.

The Latest: Gnabry to Man City?

As per reports shared by City Xtra, Gnabry will rise to the top of Pep Guardiola’s summer wish list, should Sterling complete his proposed move to Chelsea.

The Germany international has also entered the last 12 months of his current contract and is reportedly reluctant to sign a new deal keeping him at the Allianz Arena.

As a result, it has been suggested that Bayern would be willing to cash in on the 26-year-old for around £40m.

The Verdict: Great replacement

Replacing Sterling would not be an easy feat for City, given his haul of 131 goals for the club, but as far as replacements go, they won’t get much better than Gnabry.

The German has been described as a ‘world class’ player by Rio Ferdinand and an ‘unbelievable finisher’ by Owen Hargreaves in the past (via Daily Mail).

When looking at the two wingers’ statistics, the comparisons are also remarkably similar. Compared with positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year, Sterling ranks in the 92nd percentile for non-penalty goals, whereas Gnabry comes in even higher in the 97th percentile.

Furthermore, the England international and Bayern Munich star both netted 17 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions last season

This helps to illustrate how good a replacement Gnabry would be for City if Sterling leaves the Etihad.

Aston Villa set for disaster over Bale

Aston Villa have already made two great new signings in the summer transfer window, with Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos both making the move to the Midlands ahead of next season.

However, it is unlikely that the incomings will stop there, with numerous players being linked with the club, including Luis Suarez and Ben Foster more recently.

One player who has been now linked with a chance to stand out in Steven Gerrard’s team next season is Gareth Bale, with the club reportedly monitoring the former Real Madrid star’s situation as he becomes a free agent after completing a nine-year stint in the Spanish capital.

The Welshman has won five Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles and three UEFA Super Cups during his time with Los Blancos, but with his contract expiring, he will now look for a move to continue playing elsewhere.

Bale has scored 106 goals and contributed 67 assists in 258 appearances with the Champions League holders, equating to a goal contribution every 105 minutes, but in more recent years he has been getting less and less game-time.

In the 2021/22 season, the 32-year-old made just seven appearances in all competitions, with one goal and no assists, but he was still picking up a whopping £528k-per-week despite his lack of input in Real Madrid’s successes.

Villa’s interest in the Welshman is a concern, as they should be building for the future of their forward line instead of finding a stop-gap for a short-term solution which could ultimately cost them millions in wages with little return on investment.

Not only are his wage demands concerning, his availability and fitness should also be a cause for trepidation, with the 32-year-old sustaining eight injuries last season alone with Real Madrid, all while being dubbed a “controversial” figure.

Bale did make a return to the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan in 2020/21, again finding it difficult to stay fit as he sustained three injuries, missing 31 days and eight matches and making just 20 league appearances in total.

Villa could easily repeat the nightmare which unfolded with the signing of Ross McCormack, whose wages shot up to £70k-per-week when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2019 despite not playing a league match for the club in two years prior to their promotion. They could be on a similarly wasteful path by offering Bale a high salary.

Ultimately, Gerrard and Johan Lange should carefully assess whether the winning mentality of Bale, as evidenced be his aforementioned trophy haul, is worth the large salary and almost inevitable fitness issues which could see him sidelined frequently. It is definitely a huge risk for Villa.

Kesler-Hayden can be Villa’s next Cash

Aston Villa might already boast one of the top young right-backs in the Premier League in Matty Cash, but Steven Gerrard may soon have competition for the Poland international in Kaine Kesler-Hayden.

The 19-year-old earned rave reviews on loan with Swindon Town and MK Dons last season and looks to have a big future at Villa, so fans might not have to wait too long until they see him starting in the first-team.

The academy graduate did feature in the infamous 4-1 FA Cup defeat against Liverpool in January 2021, when the pandemic forced the Villans to play an academy side, but the right-back may soon find himself lining up alongside the likes of Philippe Coutinho.

Last season saw him sent to Swindon in League Two for the first half of the campaign, where he made 21 appearances, contributing one goal and two assists, before those at Villa decided he needed to test himself at a higher level.

He was sent to League One promotion hopefuls MK Dons, helping Liam Manning’s side to a playoff spot with one goal and one assist in 17 appearances.

During his time with the Robins, local reporter Johnny Leighfield sang his praises, saying:

“He’s just a cut above. He’s got a brilliant turn of pace and a player who likes to do his damage up the other end of the pitch.

“He’s got everything about him to play either Championship or Premier League football regularly.”

It would not be a surprise to see the teenage defender earn a Championship loan next season, although Gerrard might be keen to assess the youngster in pre-season to see if he could compete with Cash for a starting spot first.

Kesler-Hayden may struggle to usurp the Polish full-back, however, as he was one of the standout performers for Villa last season, averaging a strong 6.91 rating from WhoScored after appearing in every Premier League fixture, contributing four goals and five assists.

The former Nottingham Forest man may only be 24, but Villa fans can be safe in the knowledge that they have Kesler-Hayden coming through as a potential replacement for Cash in the future.

Predicted Spurs XI, team news v Norwich

Tottenham Hotspur know a point will secure them a place in the Champions League next season as they travel to Norfolk to face Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Antonio Conte has transformed the north London outfit since arriving in November as Nuno Santo’s replacement and in recent weeks, their hard work on the training pitch has come to fruition.

Last week, Spurs defeated arch-rivals Arsenal and then Burnley to move into that fourth spot with everything in their own control. Now they go up against a side already banished to the Championship.

After an illness scare in midweek, it will be interesting to see what sort of side the Italian head coach names, here’s what we are predicting…

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

In goal, Hugo Lloris is expected to remain, given he is the no.1 choice and the club captain. And with the Lilywhites still without Cristian Romero, there should be no changes to the backline either.

That means Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez continue in a back three, with Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal on either flank as wing-backs. Sergio Reguilon is also still absent through injury.

In midfield, it would be a surprise to see any changes, so Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg partners Rodrigo Bentancur again.

But further up the pitch, we could see the one and only change to the starting XI as Dejan Kulusevski comes in for Lucas Moura.

The £18m-rated Brazilian, described as a “nightmare” by Dier in the past, just hasn’t offered as much threat as the Swede since he arrived on deadline day in January.

He comes back into a front three involving Heung-min Son and Harry Kane, who was a big doubt heading into kickoff due to illness. There’s no way he misses a game of this nature.

Predicted Spurs XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris; Davies, Dier, Sanchez; Sessegnon, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Emerson; Son, Kulusevski; Kane

AND in other news, Conte must ruthlessly axe Spurs’ £34m-rated liability today, he’s been “horrendous”…

NSWE keen on bringing "monster" to Villa

Aston Villa made an approach for Lucas Moura on deadline day, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Two in

NSWE and Johan Lange were busy on deadline day, bringing in two more players for Steven Gerrard.

Defensive midfielder Leander Dendoncker arrived from Wolves in a deal worth £13.5m, with centre-back Jan Bednarek joining later in the day on loan from Southampton. That took Villa’s summer business to seven players signed at a cost of £63m, but it looks as if the club wanted more.

The Latest: Villa interest

Romano took to Twitter on Friday to provide an update on Tottenham forward Moura.

He stated that Villa and Newcastle made a move for the Brazilian on Thursday and added that ‘there are chances for a free move’ with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Verdict: January?

Should Moura’s situation remain the same in January, then it could be worth Villa revisiting their late summer interest. Philippe Coutinho was the club’s only attacking addition over the summer, with Villa selling Trezeguet and Anwar El-Ghazi and loaning out Bertrand Traore. [Transfermarkt]

Therefore, you’d like to think that there is room for Moura, dubbed a ‘monster’ by international teammate Raphinha, as he can play on either wing or in a second striker role.

He has plenty of experience in England with 204 appearances for Spurs, a 100% win record against Aston Villa from five games and could be available on the cheap, so it could be a wise move.

Madras' Srikkanth

The former India captain’s average may be below 30, but his daredevil batting and his quaint mannerisms made him a cult favourite in his hometown

Samarth Shah21-Dec-2017I grew up in Chennai in the 1980s. It was better known as Madras back then. Then, as now, the phrase “super star” automatically meant only one person in the city: Rajinikanth. Ordinary stars were popular, but I cannot even begin to describe the crazed adulation reserved for the venerated super star. Yet, there was a phase in Madras when another man, in a totally different field, actually approached super stardom. That man was Krishnamachari Srikkanth.Srikkanth was by no means the first top-flight cricketer from Madras. Indeed, his fellow Madras Iyengar, fellow College of Engineering, Guindy, graduate, and fellow tongue-twisting name bearer, Srinivas Venkataraghavan, took over 150 Test wickets. Including 35 wickets – more than anyone else in the world – in 1971, that most momentous year in Indian cricket. But Venkat was a tidy off-spinner in an era before television became commonplace in India. In his book “Idols”, Sunil Gavaskar used the adjective “patient” to describe Venkat. He was a highly respected figure in Madras cricket circles, and played club cricket in the city well into the 1990s, when not on ICC umpiring duty. But Venkat was no super star. He lacked the impetuosity, the eccentricity, the glamour, and the charisma. In general, a batsman has a better chance of becoming a heart-throb in India. An attacking batsman who charged the likes of Marshall, Ambrose, Imran, Akram, and Hadlee, while being watched live by millions on the small screen, had little choice but to become a heart-throb.He also had little choice but to fail more often than succeed, when employing such daredevilry against all-time great skill. Hence, the rest of India and the world saw Srikkanth as another in a long line of mediocre batsmen opening the innings with the great Sunil Gavaskar. Neither his Test nor his ODI average reached 30. But measuring Srikkanth’s batting with an average is like measuring Rajinikanth’s acting by number of Academy Awards. What Madras saw, and what little kids in Madras tried to emulate, was the twirling of the blade, the sniffling of the nose, the recitation of Sanskrit slokas between deliveries, and the completely unique batting stance with feet spreadeagled 40 inches apart. Just like in Rajinikanth’s movies, the plot was secondary. The twirling of his sunglasses, the brushing back of his mane, the lighting of his cigarette mid-air, was what people came to watch. Perhaps to the outside world, Srikkanth was the Little Master’s understudy. But, to Madras, Srikkanth was taking the fight to the opponents, while Gavaskar was taking lessons. In Madras in the 1980s, they spoke with broad grins of Srikkanth top-scoring at Lord’s in the World Cup final of 1983 against Clive Lloyd’s mighty West Indies, and of his Man of the Final innings at the MCG in the 1985 World Championship of Cricket versus Pakistan. But they also spoke amid giggles of the utterly quaint things he did in his career. From being run-out while fidgeting about outside his crease on Test debut at Bombay in 1981, to nonchalantly replacing the bails after being hit-wicket (nobody appealed!), to forgetting his Sanskrit slokas for a minute as a streaker invaded the pitch at Lord’s in 1986.They marvelled at what a cricketing maverick he was, even while not batting. He took two five-wicket hauls in the same ODI series versus New Zealand in 1988, despite only taking 25 wickets in total in his ODI career. As captain, he sent Chetan Sharma in at No. 4 in the midst of a steep 250+ chase versus England at Kanpur in 1989. And in his final Test, versus Australia at Perth in 1992, he equalled the world record for the most catches by an outfielder in an innings. If Rajinikanth was adept at song, dance, romance, as well as martial art, then Srikkanth’s versatility wasn’t far behind.Srikkanth was actually the most successful batsman in India’s first two decades of limited-overs cricket. He was the first Indian to 4000 ODI runs, won more Man of the Match awards than any other Indian ODI cricketer of his time, and his four ODI hundreds were the most by any Indian, for a period of time. Navjot Sidhu eventually surpassed him when he scored his fifth hundred in 1994.Srikkanth’s Madras fanbase didn’t care about any of that. A rousing square-drive off Andy Roberts, or a hooked six off Malcolm Marshall, could sustain the Madras cricket fan for a decade. Rajinikanth, after all, is not known as much for garrulous oratory, as he is for a quip here or a joke there. The gossip magazines in Madras had more important things to talk about than run aggregates and hundreds. They needed to discuss Srikkanth’s addition of an extra ‘k’ to his name, so he could make it 9 letters long, for numerological reasons. They felt the need to weigh in on his decision to marry an Iyer lady, across caste lines. It is impossible for a matinee idol or a cricket star in India to leave home without being mobbed by fanatical followers. And so it was with Srikkanth in Madras. He was my grandfather’s favorite cricketer of the era. My grandfather was thrilled to see him in the flesh at a Rotary Club charity event at the Chola Sheraton hotel, just before the Indian team left for Australia in late 1991. Despite the event lasting several hours, my grandfather didn’t get a chance to talk to his favorite player. Undaunted, at the conclusion of the event, he followed Srikkanth into the men’s room, where he then advised India’s opening batsman to eschew the reverse sweep. Apart from that, his technique and shot-selection were immaculate, apparently.

Lynn's stunner, and the importance of teamwork

We asked readers what their favourite catch in the IPL was

20-May-2015Sanjay N M
Matthew Hayden’s catch in the 2010 final was a game-changer, not only because it was the crucial wicket of Kieron Pollard, but also due to the odd fielding position that MS Dhoni had set. Chennai Super Kings went on to claim their first title, and followed it up with another in the 2011 edition. The catch that established CSK as the best IPL team ever.Bidwan Baruah
I believe Kieron Pollard’s stunning catch against Rajasthan Royals to dismiss Kevon Cooper in IPL 2014 was the best of all. It had agility, flexibility, presence of mind and above all a touch of magic!David Hussey’s catch to dismiss Paul Collingwood in 2010 comes very close, but I rank this higher because Pollard took two unbelievable catches within this single catch; each of them was very, very tough, while Hussey’s was a combination of juggling and presence of mind.Rijul Shah
The best catch to me is of David Hussey’s to dismiss Paul Collingwood in Delhi Daredevils’ match against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2010. To pull off a blinder at the boundary ropes, at the third attempt. Special Effort. Special.Koushik Ganapathi
There are many. But to point out one, it has to be the combined effort from Ajinkya Rahane and Johan Botha in the fifth edition of the IPL. Chasing 171, Pune Warriors were reeling at 112 for 8 with three overs to go. The ball goes in the air. Johan Botha at long-off takes the catch and loses his balance and is about to go over the boundary rope. But what makes it spectacular is that he relays the ball to Ajinkya Rahane, who is running in from long-on.A similar effort was pulled off in the 2015 edition by another Royals duo, Tim Southee and Karun Nair. The Botha-Rahane stunner has to be rated better, since Botha had to throw the ball quite a distance with minimum time to react. It also implies the essence of the game is teamwork in every aspect and it’s not just the skill that is needed at the highest level.Swapnil
No doubt the best catch was from Chris Lynn to dismiss AB de Villiers in the 2014 IPL edition, with RCB needing six from three balls. AB hits the ball and it seemed like it would go all the way but Lynn pulled off a stunner at deep midwicket as if defying the laws of physics and this ultimately helped Knight Riders win the match by two runs.
