David Saker on Newlands controversy: 'The finger-pointing is going to go on and on and on'

The then Australia bowling coach has likened the team’s ‘monumental mistake’ to the underarm incident of 1981

David Saker, Australia’s bowling coach at the time of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, has said the controversy will continue to taint Australian cricket much like the underarm incident of 1981 has done.Related

Saker’s comments came in the wake of the publication of an interview in , where Cameron Bancroft – the player caught using sandpaper on the ball at Newlands – hinted that there was wider knowledge of the ball-tampering plan within the Australian dressing room beyond the trio of players sanctioned by Cricket Australia: himself, captain Steven Smith and vice-captain David Warner.Without going into details of what went on in the dressing room, Saker said there was no foreseeable end to the blame game surrounding the events at Newlands.”Obviously a lot of things went wrong at that time. The finger-pointing is going to go on and on and on,” Saker told and .”There was a lot of people to blame. It could have been me to blame, it could have been someone else. The gravity wasn’t as plain until it all came out.”Following the publication of the Bancroft interview, Cricket Australia had issued a statement clarifying it was still open to hearing and investigating any new information brought to light about the Newlands incident, whether from Bancroft or anyone else.Saker wasn’t sure what a reopened investigation would achieve.”I don’t think it’d be unfair. I just don’t know what they’re going to find out,” Saker said. “It’s like the underarm, it’s never going to go away.”

Man City open to signing "world class" ace with 44 Premier League goals

Manchester City are said to be open to completing the signing of a "world-class" player with 44 Premier League goals to his name, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man City transfer news

Pep Guardiola's side got their title defence off to a perfect start on Sunday afternoon, picking up a hard-earned but deserved 2-0 win away to Chelsea. Erling Haaland opened the scoring and Mateo Kovacic fired home against his former club, in an early warning shot to their rivals at the top of the table.

Savinho was involved on his league debut for the reigning champions, impressing before picking up an injury before half-time, but the Brazilian has been City's only signing of genuine note during the summer transfer window. That's not to say that others aren't being linked with moves to the Etihad in the coming weeks, though, including Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo.

The 23-year-old scored in his side's opening La Liga fixture against Real Mallorca on Sunday evening, but couldn't prevent them from drawing 1-1, and is seen as a potentially ideal replacement for the departed Julian Alvarez.

Meanwhile, City are also believed to be close to striking a deal for young attacker Divin Mubama, who was most recently at West Ham. The England Under-20 international would be viewed as one for the future, also increasing the club's homegrown quota.

Man City open to stunning move for "world-class" ace

According to a massive claim from Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester City are open to the idea of re-signing former hero Ilkay Gundogan this summer, in what would be a shock transfer. The German has reportedly asked to leave current club Barcelona and City are not ruling out the idea of bringing him back to the Etihad before the current transfer window reaches its conclusion.

This would be a stunning capture by City, in terms of its surprising nature, considering few have expected to see him return to the club. At 33, his best days are behind him, but he does still have plenty to offer as a squad player, possessing vast experience and a winning mentality.

Emre Can has hailed his Germany teammate as "world class" in the recent past, while Guardiola absolutely adores him as a player: "He’s so intelligent Gundo, so clever and competitive. Under pressure, he handles it without a problem. He’s one of the best players I ever trained in my career in terms of the whole package. He's top, top class."

While some may baulk at the claim, City's squad depth is actually lacking a little this season, so Gundogan could bolster Guardiola's options, already knowing the club inside out and winning so many trophies during his time there.

Whether a move actually materialises this summer remains to be seen, but there is definite sense in bringing the 44-goal former Premier League hero back for a short-term stint, and the move could well appeal to him after a relatively average spell at Barca.

Deadlocked: USMNT stars Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah and Tim Weah fail to make difference in lifeless AC Milan-Juventus draw

Pulisic, McKennie, Musah and Weah all play, but none could break the deadlock in the scoreless Serie A draw

  • Milan and Juve draw 0-0
  • McKennie, Musah start
  • Pulisic, Weah come off bench
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Two of the four USMNT stars were in their clubs' starting XIs, with Weston McKennie starting for Juventus and Yunus Musah in the AC Milan lineup. Christian Pulisic was named to the bench, reportedly due to fatigue, while Tim Weah, too, was among the substitutes.

Both Pulisic and Weah were tossed into the fray in the second half as both teams searched for an attacking threat. While there was plenty of hype leading up to the match, particularly in the U.S., the actual game itself never got particularly close, as both teams failed to score in a dull 0-0 draw in Milan.

    USMNT IMPACT

The match comes just days after the four USMNT players returned from national team duty, with all four shining particularly in the second leg of the CONCACAF Nation's League quarterfinal against Jamaica. Pulisic scored a goal and created an own goal, while Weah got a goal of his own. McKennie, meanwhile, assisted Pulisic's opener and Musah, ironically, teed up Weah for his second-half finish.

Under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, all four are expected to be key players. Pulisic is, of course, the USMNT's best player, with his form in Milan this season further confirming that. McKennie and Musah, meanwhile, are carving out roles in midfield, with the latter serving as a versatile weapon under Pochettino.

As for Weah, he made his first appearance under the Argentine in the USMNT's second leg against Jamaica, and his goal served as a good example of what he can bring to the team with the new boss at the helm.

    GOAL'S RATINGS

    Weston McKennie (5/10):

Was chucked into a newer role, playing much higher due to the absence of Dusan Vlahovic. That often left a bit of a hole up top without that regular striker, although McKennie did have a few good runs in there.

    Yunus Musah (5/10):

Much like he has with the USMNT, started on the right-wing opposite Rafael Leao on the other side. Didn't really add much to the attack, but did help right-back Emerson Royal contain Juve wonderkid Kenan Yildiz for most of the match.

    Christian Pulisic (6/10):

Brought in to replace Ruben Loftus-Cheek as Milan turned to their best attacker so far this season. Unfortunately for them, Pulisic couldn't quite turn the tide. He had a few tidy moments on the ball, but nothing particularly decisive.

    Tim Weah (6/10):

With no recognized striker in the starting XI, Thiago Motta turned to Weah late to give the team a designated attacking player up top. Given only 10-ish minutes to work, though, Weah only had a handful of touches.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neither side will be particularly happy with the draw given the tight race at the top of Serie A. Inter, for the moment, sit atop the league with 28 points, with Napoli, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Lazio and Juve all within three points at the moment. Milan, meanwhile, are now nine points back in the Scudetto race, although the Rossoneri do have a game in hand.

Contact made: Liverpool eyeing "unbelievable" £60k-a-week ace this summer

Liverpool have made contact with an "unbelievable" Premier League player over a summer move to Anfield, according to a fresh transfer update.

Slot eyeing new signings for Liverpool

The Reds have had a lowkey summer in the transfer market to date, with Arne Slot easing into his new surroundings after replacing Jurgen Klopp while Euro 2024 takes centre stage.

That's not to say that constant rumours aren't emerging regarding new signings, with France and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman linked with a move to Anfield ahead of next season. The 28-year-old is seen as an ideal colleague for Darwin Nunez by bringing out the best in him with his trickery and end product out wide.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

Liverpool are also believed to have made an enquiry about the availability of Real Madrid's prodigiously talented teenager Arda Guler, who is currently impressing for Turkey. However, the reigning European champions are reluctant to sell him permanently, so the best the Reds could hope for may be a loan move.

Centre-back reinforcements feel like a must for Slot ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, especially with Joel Matip moving on. Nottingham Forest star Murillo has emerged as a rumoured target for the Merseysiders. The 21-year-old started 32 matches in the Premier League last season and has even been likened to a "prime Roberto Carlos", such is his ability.

Liverpool make contact with "unbelievable" ace

According to HITC, Liverpool have contacted Newcastle United over the potential signing of Anthony Gordon this summer, seeing him as a strong target to bring in.

In the report, the Reds are described as being "very keen" on the England international, with Slot wanting to "add to the club’s attacking pool", especially with the futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah somewhat uncertain.

Gordon's stock has risen significantly since he traded Everton for Newcastle last summer, with the winger standing out as one of the Magpies' star players during a tough campaign for them on the whole.

The 23-year-old ended the season with 11 goals and 10 assists in the league, with one of his strikes coming at home to Liverpool last August, prior to Nunez's late heroics earning Klopp's side a dramatic 2-1 win at St James' Park.

Gordon's impact in a Newcastle shirt has not been lost on many, including teammate Bruno Guimaraes, with the Brazilian saying of him back in March: "He has been amazing, he is so quick and when we get the ball to him we know he is going to do something special. No one at the club deserves to be in the England squad more than him. He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists."

Still only 23, there is still so much more to come from Gordon, and it could be that he is an upgrade on Diaz, whose end product has come in for criticism at times. The Colombian remains an excellent option for Liverpool, but if he does suddenly depart, £60,000-a-week attacker Gordon could end up being the ideal replacement.

vivendo. Pude me destacar e acredito que consegui conquistar a confiança do
Crespo.

Aston Villa ready to accept bid for £100k-p/w star alongside Luiz and Duran

Aston Villa are reportedly ready to accept offers for another star player this summer alongside Douglas Luiz and Jhon Duran.

Luiz to Juventus, Duran to Chelsea updates

After qualifying for the Champions League in Unai Emery’s first full season in charge at Villa Park, NSWE and Monchi are once again ready for a busy summer transfer window.

There could be plenty of incomings and outgoings in the Midlands, with plenty of rumours regarding the futures of Douglas Luiz and Jhon Duran at this moment in time. The Brazilian midfielder has now agreed personal terms with Juventus ahead of a player-plus-cash swap deal. Villa could receive Weston McKennie, Samuel Iling Jr and a €20m fee for Luiz.

Meanwhile, there has also been speculation that Villa and Chelsea have agreed on a £42m fee for Duran. However, it doesn’t look as if Villa will stop there when it comes to player sales. There have been rumours of a move to AC Milan for right-back Matty Cash, but it looks as if another defender is no longer wanted at the club.

Aston Villa ready to sell Diego Carlos

According to Football Insider, Villa and Emery are now ready to accept an offer for centre-back Diego Carlos during the current transfer window.

It is stated that Villa need to raise funds to comply with PSR before the end of the month, and alongside Luiz and Duran, Carlos is ‘another first-team starter who could leave Villa Park this summer to help balance the books despite featuring heavily last season’.

Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

Carlos, who picks up £100,000-a-week in the Midlands, joined the club from Sevilla during Steven Gerrard’s time as manager back in 2022. Since then, the Brazilian has gone on to make 41 appearances for the club, the majority of which came last season due to an injury-hit 2022/23 campaign.

The 31-year-old came in for praise from Gary Neville last season after Villa’s 2-0 win over Arsenal back in April, describing him as a “man mountain” at the back.

“He’s been Villa’s best player in the first half Diego Carlos, he’s been immense. Diego Carlos, outstanding in that first half. Clean sheet, he’s been outstanding. In the first half, he was a man mountain.”

Aston Villa hold talks for dream £25m Gallagher partner

After sorting out PSR concerns Emery can shape his squad with talented new members.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 13, 2024

Alongside Carlos, Villa have Pau Torres, Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and the returning Tyrone Mings as centre-back options, so if they can bring in a figure more than the £26m fee they paid Sevilla two years ago, Villa could see it as good business, making this one to watch over the coming weeks before the June 30 PSR deadline.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Tottenham Hotspur star has been on fire this season, scoring 10 goals across all competitions. However, his performance against Xabi Alonso's men came under scrutiny as BILD journalist Walter M. Straten criticised the striker for going missing.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Analysing Kane's performance against Leverkusen, the journalist wrote: "Lots of effort, too little success. Harry Kane is hanging around alone up front. What good are three goals against Kiel if he doesn't even get a shot on goal in a big game like yesterday? Fairness dictates that we shouldn't unleash the Kane-can't-win-a-title curse now. Leeds demanding millions more than market value to sell £35k-p/w loan star

Leeds United and their owners are playing hardball over the permanent sale of one of their loanees this summer, it has emerged.

Farke's side in hunt for promotion

Daniel Farke's Leeds side are two games away from promotion out of the Championship and back into the top flight, with a play-off semi-final second leg against Norwich City to come before a potential showdown at Wembley, where they will take on one of Southampton or West Brom.

They will have to make history to do so though, with Leeds never having been promoted via the play-offs, and their last failure coming against Derby County in 2019, though they secured automatic promotion the following season.

Their uncertainty makes squad planning difficult, a task made all the more tricky by the recent losses announced by the club, which amount to £33.7m, while they also have significant transfer fees still due to clubs. But now, reports suggest that they are looking to maximise what they have already, and won't be taken for a ride by clubs looking for cheap deals.

Leeds bargaining over loanee

Leeds will not be letting players leave on the cheap this summer if they can help it, as Borussia Monchengladbach are finding out. The German outfit are where Maximilian Wober has spent this season, after leaving Elland Road on loan six months after arriving at the club.

He has appeared 25 times in the German top flight, contributing two goals and three assists, and the powers that be at the club would like to keep him there on a permanent basis after an impressive campaign.

Leeds plan to sell £45,000-a-week player this summer

However, they are running into trouble because no option or obligation to buy the Austrian was included in the loan deal, which means that his performances have only made it more difficult for them to sign him.

According to Bild, it is now likely that his final game for the club will come against Stuttgart, because Leeds are demanding 17m euros (£14.5m) to make the deal permanent, 3m euros more than his valuation as per Transfermarkt.

For their part, 'Gladbach are only willing to part with 9m euros to make the deal permanent, but Leeds are hoping that a strong European Championship for the defender will see interest increase and incite a bidding war for the defender, who has three years left to run on his £35,000 a week contract at Elland Road.

max-wober-leeds-united-injury

Borrusia Mönchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus admitted keeping Wober would be a struggle: “We are having discussions with everyone involved, of course we would like to keep Max with us. But the demands are extremely high.”

Wober could be a useful option for Daniel Farke if Leeds makes it back into the Premier League. Should they remain in the Championship, the 49ers will be hoping to make a tidy profit on the defender, already making it clear they will not be made fools out of when it comes to their horde of loanees.
