Short ruled out of final ODI with McDermott called up

Queensland batter Ben McDermott has been called into Australia’s ODI squad after Matthew Short was ruled out of the third match against West Indies in Canberra on Tuesday due to a low-grade hamstring injury.Short suffered the injury during Sunday’s series-clinching win at the SCG. He made 41 with the bat but was unable to field after suffering the injury while batting. There are no spare batters left in Australia’s squad after Travis Head was sent home to rest following the first ODI at the MCG. McDermott scored a stunning 146 not out for Queensland in a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania on Saturday. He will link up with the Australia squad in Canberra on Monday.Related

McDermott has not played an ODI for Australia since the tour of Pakistan in March-April 2022. He made his first and only ODI century on that tour. He did play for Australia in the recent T20I series in India following the World Cup and made 54 off 36 in the final T20I in Bengaluru.Australia will also be without Josh Hazlewood in Canberra as he is set to remain in Sydney before linking up with the T20I squad in Hobart ahead of Friday’s first T20I against West Indies.Spencer Johnson has also been called into the squad while Xavier Bartlett is likely to return to the side after being rested from the match in Sydney following his stunning debut in Melbourne.Australia’s selectors will likely need to add at least one more batter to the T20I squad given Head has been rested from the entire series and Short will be in doubt with his hamstring injury.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Napoli had previously rejected Galatasaray’s earlier offers due to concerns over the payment structure. However, the Serie A side appears more receptive now that bank guarantees have been delivered. Osimhen has already agreed to the move, with Galatasaray pushing to complete what would be a record-breaking deal for Turkish football. Napoli, for their part, are looking to reinvest the proceeds into a major squad overhaul this summer.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

If completed, the move would become the most expensive transfer in Turkish football history by a massive margin – Orkun Kokcu became the most expensive Super Lig signing on Sunday when he joined Besiktas from Benfica for a reported €25m. Galatasaray have made Osimhen their top priority for the window after he scored 37 goals in 41 games for the club in the 2024-25 season during his loan spell.

Ashes: MCC bans one member, suspends two others over Long Room fracas

One MCC member has been expelled from the club, and two further individuals have been handed lengthy suspensions, following the confrontations in the Long Room at Lord’s in the wake of Jonny Bairstow’s controversial stumping in this summer’s Ashes Test. The sanctions were handed out more than three months after the incidents on the final day of the second Test, on July 2, which Australia eventually won by 43 runs to take a 2-0 series lead. The flashpoint occurred as the players left the field for lunch, shortly after Bairstow had been dismissed by Alex Carey as he walked out of his crease at the end of an over, having allowed the delivery to pass through to the keeper.Footage emerged of several MCC members heckling Australian players as they walked through the Long Room at the lunch interval, with Usman Khawaja and David Warner caught in heated exchanges on their way to the away dressing room. At the time, sources told AAP that at least one person attempted to trip up Warner and Steve Smith as they walked up the stairs.Related

Such was the febrile atmosphere within the pavilion, MCC chief executive Guy Lavender was forced to address the members at the interval to remind them to respect the visiting team. An official “unreserved apology” was issued to Cricket Australia, who subsequently requested MCC to launch their own investigation, stating their players and staff had been “verbally abused, with some being physically contacted”.While details of the disciplinary process are to remain “confidential”, Thursday’s update from MCC revealed sanctions for life, four-and-a-half years and 30 months, respectively.”The actions of the three individuals in the Pavilion on the day in question fell well below the behaviour expected from our Members,” read the statement. “The penalties set out above are the consequences of breaching the Club’s Code of Conduct.”An appeal process has already been concluded.

Date changes for India-Pakistan and eight other World Cup games

Revised schedule finally released with less than two months to go before the start of the tournament on October 5

Nine matches in the upcoming ODI World Cup have had their dates or start times changed, the ICC has finally confirmed, including the India-Pakistan fixture in Ahmedabad, which will now be played – as reported earlier by ESPNcricinfo – on October 14 instead of October 15. The changes were confirmed by the ICC with less than two months to go before the start of the game’s showpiece event.Pakistan, Bangladesh and England are the most affected: while three games of Pakistan have been shifted, Bangladesh and England have had two changes each in their schedule, aside from having their originally-planned day-night fixture on October 10 converted to a day game. As a result of the change in the India-Pakistan game, Pakistan’s match against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad has been moved from October 12 to October 10, to give them an adequate gap leading into their India match. But the Australia-South Africa match in Lucknow has also been brought forward a day and will take place on October 12 instead of October 13. The England-Afghanistan game in Delhi, which was originally scheduled for October 14, will be played on October 15. New Zealand’s match against Bangladesh in Chennai has been changed from a day game on October 14 to a day-night fixture on October 13.The double-header scheduled for November 12 – Australia vs Bangladesh in Pune and England vs Pakistan in Kolkata – will now be played on November 11, following concerns raised by Kolkata police to the Cricket Association of Bengal about holding a match on the same day as the Hindu festival of Kali Puja.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The league stage of the World Cup will now end with India playing Netherlands in Bengaluru on November 12, instead of November 11.The World Cup starts on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad, and culminates in the final on November 18, also in Ahmedabad. The semi-finals will be played in Mumbai and Kolkata on November 15 and 16 respectively. The ICC also announced that tickets for the event will go online from August 25.The schedule of the 2023 ODI World Cup was released after a long delay on June 27, just 100 days before the start of the tournament on October 5 in Ahmedabad, whereas the schedules for the last two tournaments in Australia and New Zealand (2015) and England and Wales (2019) were out more than 12 months in advance. It later emerged that the local police in Ahmedabad had raised concerns over providing adequate security on October 15, the original date of the India vs Pakistan game, which is also the first day of Navaratri, a major, nine-day Hindu festival.Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, had, however, dismissed that as the reason. “If security was an issue then why would the match go there [to Ahmedabad] – 14-15 is not the problem,” he had said after a BCCI meeting on July 27. “Two or three boards have written in, asking to change based on the logistical challenges. There are some matches where there is only a two-day gap, so it will be difficult to play and then travel next day [and then play again].”

Brighton plotting summer swoop for "unbelievable" £20m Watson alternative

After missing out on Tommy Watson on deadline day, Brighton & Hove Albion are now reportedly plotting a summer move to sign an alternative attacking option for Fabian Hurzeler this summer.

Brighton transfer news

For the first time in a long time, a Brighton manager suddenly finds himself under pressure and facing criticism at The Amex following his side’s humiliating thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest. Having initially made a sensational start, Hurzeler has struggled to maintain his side’s form since November and last weekend’s defeat summed up his side’s struggles in one miserable afternoon.

The Seagulls rarely act irrationally, however, and the 31-year-old still seems likely to remain in the technical area with a harsh and early lesson learned against Forest last time out.

Brighton submit £13m bid to sign "exciting forward", they've had a response

The Seagulls are looking to bolster their squad before the transfer deadline.

What far from made Brighton’s week any better, meanwhile, was their failure to sign Watson. After reportedly submitting a bid worth £13m to sign the Sunderland teenager, there may have been plenty of hope that they’d get their man. The Black Cats remained stubborn, however, and those in Sussex were left feeling frustrated.

Whether the Seagulls try their luck once again this summer remains to be seen. Instead, reports suggest that they may turn their attention towards another Championship talent.

According to TeamTalk, Brighton are now plotting a summer swoop to sign Tom Fellows from West Bromwich Albion ahead of Premier League rivals Everton in a deal which could be worth as much as £20m.

As ever, promotion to the Premier League could be key to deciding any potential deal. If West Brom earn promotion, then any sale would be far less tempting as they look to navigate instant survival. Failure to earn such an achievement in the current campaign, meanwhile, would arguably leave the door ajar for Brighton or Everton to come calling.

"Unbelievable" Fellows is Premier League-ready

In pursuit of Watson, Brighton were eyeing a future star rather than a player likely to make an instant impact at 18 years old. Fellows, now 21 years old and often stepping up for West Brom, is the opposite of that. The right-midfielder is ready for the Premier League with or without the Baggies and could be handed the perfect summer route by the Seagulls.

Compared to a player who reportedly attracted £50m+ interest from Saudi Arabia towards the end of the transfer window, Fellows has proven exactly where he belongs and could soon join Mitoma at The Amex as a result.

The young winger has earned impressive praise throughout the current campaign, including from West Brom forward Karlan Grant who told BBC Sport in August: “He’s an unbelievable young player. As soon as he does that step-over, I know the ball’s going to be arriving at the back stick and there’s going to be chances.”

Fellows’ 10 assists this season have, of course, proved Grant right since his August prediction with chances arriving time and time again courtesy of the talented winger destined for the Premier League.

Chelsea must axe "ridiculous" star who’s worth millions more than Ferguson

Chelsea’s attackers have arguably been a little bit underwhelming so far in the Premier League this season. The exception to that is Cole Palmer, who has once again stood out with 14 goals and six assists in the top flight.

He has been well-supported by a few of the Blues’ attackers. Nicolas Jackson has played well, with nine goals and five assists, and Noni Madueke has ten goal involvements, with both players the only other Chelsea attackers to score more than five goals.

However, a couple of players have underperformed, including Joao Felix and Pedro Neto, who have only managed one goal each in the Premier League. Thus, it might not be a surprise that the Blues are targeting a late move for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.

Why Chelsea want Ferguson

A report on Friday confirmed that the Blues have joined the race to sign Ferguson before Monday’s deadline. At this stage, it is not clear whether or not they want to do a loan deal or make a permanent move for the Irishman. However, he is valued at £40m by the Seagulls.

Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.

It has been a really tough season in 2024/25 for the 20-year-old. He has played 15 times across all competitions but has only found the back of the net once. That strike came at home in a 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, he has shown great promise at first-team level for the South Coast outfit. The striker has scored 17 times and grabbed five assists in 80 games for the club, although has only played 3542 minutes in that time.

So, with that in mind, the Blues would certainly be adding someone who has a natural eye for goal. Although he has struggled this season, it is important to remember Ferguson is just 20 years of age and has years to go in his development as a professional.

It remains to be seen if the Blues will sign Ferguson, but for £40m they could certainly do worse. In fact, one of their current players is worth far more than the striker, who cannot get into the side this season under Enzo Maresca.

The player worth more than Ferguson

The Chelsea star worth more than the Brighton forward is Christopher Nkunku. Things have not really worked out for the French forward at Stamford Bridge since his £52m move from RB Leipzig in 2023.

Christopher Nkunku scores for Chelsea

His record, on the face of things, is not too bad. The former PSG star has played 43 times in that famous Blue shirt, scoring 16 times and registering four assists.

However, seven of those goals have come in the Conference League, including two goals and an assist in the 8-0 win over FC Noah this season.

Nkunku has been disappointing in the Premier League in 2024/25, with five goals and one assist in 30 appearances. With that being said, he is competing against Palmer and Jackson for a spot in the side, which is far from easy given their form.

The Frenchman, once described as “ridiculous” by Statman Dave during his time at Leipzig, was linked with a move back to Germany earlier in the transfer window. He had agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich, as reported by Florian Plettenberg on the 18th of January.

ESPN reported that the Blues would want at least £50m for Nkunku if he were to leave, and there are certainly positives for his departure. Not only does it work better for him, given he can play regular football elsewhere, but it means Chelsea can also reinvest the money into a deal for Ferguson, which is better suited to their squad.

For all parties, it seems worth Nkunku leaving Stamford Bridge. He is worth £10m more than Brighton’s asking price for the Ireland striker, and that certainly benefits the Blues given they can add a more suitable profile to their squad.
