Spurs lining up move for “world-class” £310k-p/w Kulusevski upgrade

Tottenham Hotspur will not play any football this weekend due to the FA Cup semi-finals, so will have a rest ahead of a crucial home clash against Arsenal in the Premier League in just over one week.

While Champions League qualification is hanging in the balance – Spurs lie three points off fourth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand, one month of Premier League action remaining – Ange Postecoglou will likely have held some form of internal discussion to map out an initial transfer strategy.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

Having been one of the busiest clubs in the market since the Australian was selected to lead the revival, Tottenham have improved and the fresh faces have made their presence known, but the canyon that the division's top three sit at the other side may well be narrowed with the right moves in several months.

Daniel Levy is worth his salt and with the streamlined strategy suggestive of success, the club's latest top target might be the one to go for.

Spurs' search for a forward

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have registered a 'concrete' interest in Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry, with the recently-usurped Bundesliga champions open to selling the former Arsenal product.

Gnabry, aged 28, has long been a central figure in a team of trophy specialists but has been afflicted with injuries this season and might welcome the chance for a new chapter.

Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry

His contract isn't up until 2026 but there is a good chance that, if Tottenham can present an exciting package, the versatile forward would be willing to listen to an offer.

Serge Gnabry's season in numbers

Bayern signed Gnabry from divisional rivals Werder Bremen after activating his €8m (£7m) release clause, two years on from his departure from Arsenal, having made 18 appearances for the Gunners, scoring once and supplying two assists.

His move to Bayern has been a stunning success, winning every trophy on offer over six years of service and, in total, scoring 86 goals and supplying 52 assists across 235 fixtures.

The £310k-per-week winger might have endured an injury-riddled campaign but he has still demonstrated respectable levels in the final third and boasts five goals and one assist from just eight starting appearances in all competitions.

Of course, his overall Bayern record highlights his prowess – only last year, the Germany international posted 17 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.

In the Bundesliga last season, as per Sofascore, Gnabry clinched 19 goal contributions from just 22 starts, completing 82% of his passes, creating 11 big chances and averaging 1.1 key passes per game.

Serge Gnabry and Eric Dier.

While he's been unfortunate on the injury front this season, Bayern are clearly in need of a reshuffle after losing out in the Bundesliga title race for the first time in a decade, and Gnabry could be one of the long-time servants shown the exit as the soon-to-return Julian Nagelsmann gets to work and competes against a new superpower in Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen.

Having been hailed for his "world-class" quality by pundit Rio Ferdinand in the past, Tottenham would only be too happy to relieve Die Roten of his signature…

How Serge Gnabry could fit in at Spurs

Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner are express options down the flanks and have found success this season through their speed and directness, while Dejan Kulusevski operates on the other end of the spectrum and focuses on technical quality and ball retention, albeit guilty of slowing proceedings down, thus benched for the past three league matches.

Principally playing from the right, Gnabry could prove to be a massive upgrade on Kulusevski, offering a far more reliable goal threat and offering a level of creativity that ensures he's not serving as a one-dimensional outlet.

Gnabry would offer the closest thing to a complete collection of these aforementioned Lilywhites, having been described as "lightning quick" and "tailor-made for big transition moments" with a "clinical finish with both feet" by former Werder Bremen boss Alexander Nouri.

While he's found a position of lesser importance in Bayern's first-team this season, Gnabry has retained his potency in front of goal and currently ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 12% for total shots and pass completion, the top 10% for tackles and the top 16% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.

What does this tell us? Well, arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Gnabry would likely provide a steady goal threat – possibly the sharpest from any of the current wide options, barring Son – with Kulusevski, by contrast, ranking in just the bottom 42% for goals per 90, as well as the bottom 27% for shots, the top 35% for pass completion, the top 10% for tackles and the bottom 36% for blocks.

He's scoring at an incredible rate despite only ranking in the top 12% for shots taken, meaning that he is excellent at snatching his chances. Moreover, the German is crisp in possession and boasts some impressive defensive metrics; Bayern are not known for their defensive work but are still organised and strong in preventive sequences, and Gnabry seeks to contribute in this regard.

For Postecoglou, whose system is steeping hard-working movements, fluidity and sharp-edged attacking intent, this is a player who would only thrive, and presented with a proposal promising an influential role, he might just be tempted, especially if promised Kulusevski's place as the regular starter on the right.

While some might think that a return to the rigours of the Premier League could weaken Gnabry's constitution, he has hardly struggled to perform against English opposition, bagging against the Gunners in the Champions League this season and, as Spurs supporters will acutely recall, decimating Mauricio Pochettino's side and plundering four goals in a 7-2 demolition in north London back in 2019.

£20m Spurs man could be the latest to prove Ange wrong after Dier revival

Ange Postecoglou’s side could surely make good use of this talented defender’s skill set.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 19, 2024

Gnabry is still only 28 and has honed his qualities over many illustrious years in Bavaria – just maybe, Tottenham might offer a package that convinces him to try his hand in England once again, taking Postecoglou's project to the next level.

Aston Villa can ease Cash blow by starting gem who’s "got everything"

The fact that Aston Villa are fourth in the Premier League with just eight games to go really does highlight the progress made this season.

However, in truth, the Villans have been a much more complete side ever since Unai Emery took over in November 2022.

Not only has the Spaniard been able to get the best out of every individual, but he’s also successfully juggled the recent injury crisis at the club, which proves that man-management is one of his key strengths.

Unfortunately, the boss received more bad news this week in regards to another setback to a player on international duty, but luckily, the boss has a promising talent ready to step up to the challenge.

Matty Cash’s latest injury update

The March international break is a period that all club managers fear, as they all hope each member of the squad returns fully fit and unscathed.

However, unfortunately for the boss and the Villa faithful, an injury to Matty Cash while playing for Poland in the past week has left an already thin position extremely weak.

Matty Cash.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the number 2 is set to face up to three weeks on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, which isn’t terrible considering he will be fit for the crucial end of the season.

Nonetheless, despite Cash missing crucial games against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City, Brentford, and Lille, there is one exciting gem who could finally be handed a chance to shine.

Aston Villa struck gold selling ace who’s now worth 6x less than Cash

The former Villa star has suffered with injury since leaving the club in 2022.

ByTom Lever Mar 26, 2024 Emery may opt for a young talent over Ezri Konsa

Ezri Konsa has often been the first-choice preference to Cash at right back throughout the season, but this time around, Emery may look to the youth for inspiration, with Kaine Kesler-Hayden ready to step up.

If the Spaniard did opt to use the 20-year-old, the Villa number four would slot into his usual role, alongside Pau Torres at right-centre back.

Ezri Konsa

Kesler Hayden started the season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, where he played 27 times, but due to the lack of depth at right back, the boss recalled the youngster in January.

With Konsa a centre half by trade, Emery wanted to have a natural right back in the squad to be called upon, but what gives the number 29 an advantage, is that he has similar characteristics to Cash, with the manager saying:

"We have added Kaine [Kesler-Hayden], we needed one player with his characteristics as a right full-back, the only player to play like that is Matty Cash and now with Kaine we have two."

As you can see by the table above, the former Plymouth ace is an extremely well-rounded full back who can attack and defend with confidence and security, even if deployed at left-back like he was against Sheffield Wednesday.

According to journalist Jonny Leighfield, Kesler-Hayden has “got everything,” being further described as “a player who like to do his damage up the other end of the pitch,” and the statistics from that game definitely support that.

Although it may be a risk to throw Kesler-Hayden in at the deep end, especially as he’s not played a minute since returning to his parent club, he has all the attributes to succeed in that high-octane right-back role under Emery.

Furthermore, with Cash’s injury, there’s not a better time to hand the prospect and opportunity to cement himself in the side, and based on his loan spell, he deserves a chance.

No Hojlund in predicted Man Utd lineup vs Everton

Manchester United will look to put their poor performance in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City behind them this week, with a completely different task ahead of them on Saturday.

At The Etihad, Erik ten Hag’s team had just 27% possession, three shots, and an xG of just 0.25, which shows how underwhelming they really were on the day.

Nevertheless, Sean Dyche’s Everton will provide an alternative test, but United do know how to defeat the Toffees, as proven by their 3-0 victory earlier this season.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what starting lineup Ten Hag could pick to walk out of the Old Trafford tunnel this weekend.

1 GK – Andre Onana

Andre Onana has featured in every single Premier League game this season, and he will make his 28th appearance of the campaign tomorrow.

2 RB – Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot

The Portuguese right-back has really made the position his own in recent months, and he will look to build on his impressive performance against Man City where he was United’s “best player,” as per StatmanDave.

3 CB – Raphael Varane

Raphael Varane will make his 19th Premier League start of the season against Everton, keeping his spot from last week.

4 CB – Jonny Evans

Varane’s partner this weekend will be Jonny Evans, after the duo formed a formidable partnership at the Etihad.

The 36-year-old made four clearances, three tackles, and two interceptions, but he should have less defending to do this time around if United can muster up more possession than they did against City.

5 LB – Sofyan Amrabat

Sofyan Amrabat

Victor Lindelof started at left back last week but struggled massively, with a pass accuracy of 70%.

Sofyan Amrabat is the only other option for the role, and he should come into the side, in spite of his error – as Rodri robbed him of possession on the edge of the box – for Erling Haaland's goal last weekend.

6 DM – Casemiro

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Casemiro has started every game since returning from injury against Newport County, and he will feature once again against the Toffees at the base of the midfield.

7 DM – Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo

18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo made his Premier League debut against Everton in November, and he will look to impress against them once again this time around.

8 RW – Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes and Facundo Pellistri

The fact that Bruno Fernandes is the captain, the main creator, and has never missed a game for United through injury confirms his place in the team.

9 AM – Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen for Manchester United.

The second change from last weekend is Christian Eriksen coming into the side for Scott McTominay.

The “sensational” ace, as per football creator Liam Canning, will bring technical class and creativity to the United team, as shown by his four key passes against Fulham two weeks ago.

10 LW – Alejandro Garnacho

Whether it’s on the right or the left, Alejandro Garnacho has been unbelievable this season, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

He will look to cause havoc against the Everton backline tomorrow afternoon.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite the interest from PSG, Huijsen seems to have set his heart on a move to the Bundesliga. According to , both Huijsen and his father are inclined to secure a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen. The presence of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen's head coach, is a significant factor in this preference. Alonso is renowned for his ability to nurture young talent, making Leverkusen an attractive destination for Huijsen.

Huijsen's appeal lies in his versatility and promise. At 19, he has already shown maturity and skill during his loan at Roma, making him a coveted asset. PSG's interest in Huijsen is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate their defence. With other targets like Leny Yoro reportedly heading towards Real Madrid, securing Huijsen becomes even more critical for the Parisian club. However, it remains to be seen if they can present a convincing sporting project to Huijsen which will force the youngster to change his mind.

Sheffield Wednesday flop has become a goal machine after leaving for £0

Sheffield Wednesday's main issues this season have centred on their lack of potency in front of goal, the Owls only managing to find the back of the net a meagre total of 24 times in the Championship from 31 games played.

The problems at Hillsborough have only become more apparent as the season chugs along, Wednesday in danger of being cut adrift in the relegation battle with five points separating them and Huddersfield Town occupying the spot directly above the bottom three.

Winning 2-0 on Friday night versus Birmingham City has at least offered up a slither of positivity, but Wednesday will still be rueing their decision to get rid of one lethal striker when they did who has since gone on to recapture his goalscoring best away from South Yorkshire.

Jordan Rhodes' numbers at Wednesday

Jordan Rhodes' name is one that needs no introduction to avid fans of the EFL, the seasoned striker bagging 220 career goals predominantly switching between the comforts of Championship and League One football.

Rhodes' time playing for Wednesday didn't quite go to plan for the notoriously prolific Scotsman however, who was going through a rare barren patch of his career when relocating to Hillsborough.

Joining Wednesday off the back of an underwhelming time playing for Middlesbrough – where Rhodes would only muster up six goals from 24 appearances – the veteran attacker could never successfully exorcise his demons from the Riverside Stadium when donning a brand-new Owls strip.

The 6 foot 1 centre-forward, who once stole the headlines for bagging 35 goals in just one season for Huddersfield Town, only managed a paltry three goals from 20 games for Wednesday before being shipped out to Norwich City after one unconvincing season.

Rhodes has shown that there is life still in him at 34 years of age however with Blackpool this campaign, the Owls desperate for an attacker in the Scotsman's mould currently who can win games singlehandedly by firing in a vital strike.

Jordan Rhodes' numbers at Blackpool

The intimidating talisman has found his goalscoring groove again for the Tangerines this season on loan from Huddersfield, finding himself in a golden boot race in League One even as his career nears to its conclusion.

Only two strikes off the top of the charts – currently occupied by Barnsley sharpshooter Devante Cole with 17 goals – Rhodes could well spearhead Blackpool to a playoff spot regardless of any personal accolades with 15 goals next to his name from 25 third-tier appearances.

1. Devante Cole – Barnsley

17 goals

2. Jamie Reid – Stevenage

16 goals

3. Alfie May – Charlton

16 goals

4. Jordan Rhodes – Blackpool

15 goals

4. Colby Bishop – Portsmouth

15 goals

Rhodes cutting a revitalised figure at Bloomfield Road this campaign has seen his manager Neil Critchley single him out for praise, describing the Tangerines hero as "outstanding" last year when commenting on the 34-year-old netting a hat-trick versus Reading.

Letting Rhodes leave the building on a free transfer now feels like a colossal error from those at Hillsborough, but nobody could have predicted the ageing centre-forward would go on to soar to these heights again during the twilight of his playing days.

The 34-year-old will hope his loan club in Blackpool can achieve promotion up to the Championship as a direct result of his exploits in front of goal, with Wednesday in grave danger of dropping out of the second tier in contrast.

Spurs in pole position to seal "electric" Johnson upgrade in late move

Tottenham Hotspur have already added Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin to their first-team squad this month and they are reportedly looking to complete a third deal before the end of the January transfer window.

Tottenham in pole position for attacker

According to Football Insider, Spurs are in pole position to secure a swoop for a young winger, who would not arrive at the club until the end of the season.

The report claims that the Lilywhites are currently leading the race to seal the signature of Club Brugge starlet Antonio Nusa, who The Guardian claimed is valued at £25m, but are set to face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

It states that they need to raise funds, potentially through the sale of Miguel Almiron, to sign the attacker and that they have held internal talks about a move for him, which means that Daniel Levy could face a battle to land a late in the window agreement for the talented ace.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

Spurs have jumped ahead of their rivals by offering to send him back to Brugge on loan for the rest of the season, as he is keen to remain at the club until the summer.

Ange Postecoglou could now land an upgrade on Brennan Johnson, albeit for the 2024/25 campaign, by beating Newcastle to Nusa's signature this month.

Brennan Johnson's struggles this season

Spurs signed the Wales international from Nottingham Forest last summer and the winger has not been able to provide consistent quality out wide.

The 22-year-old whiz has contributed with one goal and four assists in 18 Premier League appearances and 15 starts for the Lilywhites so far this term.

Johnson has found the back of the net once from an Expected Goals of 3.47 and has registered four assists from an Expected Assists of 1.85.

This suggests that the young forward has been very wasteful in front of goals with the opportunities that his teammates have created for him, whilst his fellow attackers have outperformed the quality of chances that he has provided them with.

The stats that show why Nusa could be an upgrade on Johnson

Spurs could land an upgrade on the underperfoming winger by signing Nusa, whose form for Brugge this season suggests he has the potential to be an exciting signing.

As you can see from the table above, the 18-year-old whiz, who analyst Ben Mattinson claimed has "electric" pace, has outperformed his xG and been let down, slightly, by his teammates in front of goal this season in the Pro League.

Johnson has two more league assists than Nusa despite his chances culminating in a lower xA number, and has two fewer goals than the Brugge star despite being provided with 1.05 more xG.

These statistics suggest that the Norway international, who has registered three assists in three European Championship qualifiers for his country, could be far more effective than the current Spurs attacker in the final third based on their respective form this season.

If Nusa can translate his form over to the Premier League then he could be far more ruthless with his finishing and have the quality to create better opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net, which is why the young whiz would be an upgrade on Johnson for Postecoglou.

At the age of 18, he is also four years younger than the Welshman and could be a fantastic long-term signing who could develop and improve over time.

George Bartlett century sets Somerset for return to top

George Bartlett made the most of being dropped first ball to score a career-best 137 as Somerset fought back against Surrey at Guildford.Bartlett was put down by Rikki Clarke at slip off Matt Dunn and made Surrey pay as Somerset, who will return to the top of the first division if they win, were bowled out for 344. Surrey openers Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman negotiated two overs before stumps and will resume on 0 for 0.It was Bartlett’s second hundred of the season after he scored 133 against Nottinghamshire and was made in front of ECB Technical Director Andy Flower, the former England coach.Somerset had struggled against the new ball and would have been 35 for 4 had Clarke clung onto the chance to remove Bartlett straight away.Instead, he shared stands of 95 with Tom Banton and Steve Davies and 73 with Craig Overton before Morne Morkel, armed with the new ball, had him caught behind in the 84th over.It was an outstanding effort by the 23-year-old, who was born a few miles from Guildford in Frimley, as Somerset once again showed the battling qualities which have already earned them three Championship wins this season.Banton, who had come into the side after Azhar Ali pulled out with a throat infection, gave Bartlett excellent support and hit Ryan Patel – who took four wickets in five balls in this fixture last season – for three successive boundaries as the fourth-wicket partnership took shape. But after lunch Banton went 24 balls without scoring and then edged Matt Dunn to gully for 44. Bartlett, however, found another reliable partner in ex-Surrey man Steven Davies who contributed 41 before Dunn, the pick of the Surrey attack, went around the wicket to hit off-stump with a ball which held its line.Bartlett reached his third first-class century in the last over before tea by glancing Clarke off his hip for his 13th boundary. He also lofted Gareth Batty over long on for six and played fluently again after tea, straight-driving Morkel to the boundary to bring up his career-best. The South African, though, had his revenge in the next over when Bartlett feathered an edge as he pushed forward. He faced 213 balls and hit 19 fours.Surrey wrapped up the rest of the innings quickly. Clarke returned to pick up Craig Overton, who played on for 40, and his brother Jamie, who made 20, in successive overs while Morkel had Tim Groenewald and Jack Brooks caught behind as the last four wickets fell for 24 in 5.3 overs. Morkel finished with 4 for 64.It was a strong finish to the day for Surrey, who had dominated the first hour too, as they look for their first win of the season in defence of their title. After winning the toss, Somerset had started solidly enough but, on 21, skipper Tom Abell edged Morkel low to second slip, where Dean Elgar took a good catch. Marcus Trescothick had struck a couple of boundaries with the confidence of old but on 18 he was caught behind trying to guide Clarke down to third man. Somerset lost their third wicket when Dunn trapped James Hildreth in front, but the major part of the day was dominated by Bartlett.
