Kane Williamson 95 in vain as Rohit Sharma bosses it in the Super Over

A fantastic game finally ended in heart-breaking fashion for New Zealand as they conceded the series

The Report by Alagappan Muthu29-Jan-2020
India won the Super OverA slow pitch and batsmen rising above it. Hamilton was a theatre of shot-making and at the end of a game where neither team had the edge until an astonishing Super Over, India came away deserving winners.Kane Williamson made this the classic it turned out to be, scoring 95 off 48 balls – 25 of those runs were made off the normally unhittable Jasprit Bumrah, at a time when the chase was becoming unbearably close – but his team-mates let him down. Walking off the field, with the equation reading two off three balls, he would have imagined – even having endured that bizarro World Cup final – the events that followed.Mohammed Shami, having started the 20th over giving away a six, beat Tim Seifert not once but twice with short and wide deliveries and then bowled Ross Taylor off the last ball of the match to force a tie.So Williamson had to take the field again. He had to summon the unreal form that helped him whack Bumrah for five fours in 12 balls in normal time. And guess what? He did. A six over square leg, made by his moving around in this crease. A four down the ground, thanks to a straight bat flying in the face of all that is holy in T20 cricket.New Zealand made 17 in the Super Over against the best death bowler in the world. And in the end, the very end, it still wasn’t enough. Rohit Sharma had to hit two sixes off the last two balls of a ridiculous game and even under that pressure one of India’s greatest white-ball batsmen rose to the occasion and sent his fans – including those in the dressing room – to utter delirium.Rohit’s Big BashIndia wanting to go hard while batting first is never more apparent than when Rohit, one of the greatest timers of a cricket ball ever, starts to look for the power shots. He nailed a cut shot in the first over, but that was just a batsman taking advantage of the width he was offered. The clearer indication of Rohit wanting to boss it came in the third over when he charged at Tim Southee. It resulted in zero runs but seeing a player who knows he can hit sixes without such luxuries go in search of them indicated both his and India’s mindset. They wanted a mammoth score. Rohit went on to become the first Indian to hit a half-century inside the Powerplay in a T20I, surging from 24 to 50 in the space of five Hamish Bennett deliveries that were whacked to the boundary back to back to back to back to back.KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma celebrate India’s thrilling win•AFP

The slow pitch slowdownSuch high-quality hitting made Hamilton seem like a batter’s paradise, but as soon as fielders could be put on its sizeable boundaries – Rohit had to clear 80m for a straight six – and New Zealand resorted to a consistent barrage of slower balls, the truth came to light. Even Rohit could only make only 15 off his last 17 deliveries before being dismissed by a change-up, Bennett’s knuckle ball giving him vindication.Ish Sodhi was excellent in these conditions. He changed his pace virtually every ball so that he wouldn’t be lined up. He stuck tight on off stump when he wanted to build pressure, and then dangled one wide outside to try and get wickets. There were even times when he bowled with a round-arm action. Anything to stay unpredictable as he finished his spell with only two boundaries. With Sodhi (4-0-23-0), Colin de Grandhomme (2-0-13-1) and Bennett recovering well (14 in his last two overs), New Zealand were battling back hard, but Ravindra Jadeja and Manish Pandey whacked Southee for 18 runs in the final over to swing the game in India’s favour again.Williamson’s gameVirtually all of his runs came in the period when it was extremely hard to bat, while dealing with an asking rate that rarely dipped below ten. To do something like that, you have to be very good, very prepared and very tuned in. The first bit is universally accepted. Williamson will go on to occupy the space next to the late great Martin Crowe in Kiwi hearts. The second and third – the effort he puts into them – were on bright display on Wednesday night.Especially in the battle against Bumrah.Prior to this game, the head-to-head went: 28 runs off 34 balls and a dismissal as well. At Seddon Park, it went topsy turvy. Williamson hit 36 off 16 and among them were shots of the highest, and purest, quality. In the penultimate over, for example, he hit a fast, searing pin-point yorker for four to fine leg. And all it required was a little roll of his wrists.Williamson has made a career out of this – of staying so cool in the middle that he is in a position to do the simple things right when it matters most. Remember that six off Pat Cummins in the 2015 World Cup? Or that run-out from silly mid-on to win the game against Australia? On Wednesday night, he coupled that by moving around in his crease and his former coach Mike Hesson, who was on commentary, suggested there was sound reason for it. Bumrah, when he bowls slower balls, likes to keep them outside off stump and away from the bat swing. Williamson read that trend and countered it brilliantly. So much so that he performed the role of aggressor in a partnership with de Grandhomme, who is supposed to be the lower-order dasher. Forty-four of the 49 runs for the fourth wicket came off the New Zealand captain’s bat – all the while maintaining a run rate of nearly ten an over.Kane Williamson blasted 95 off 48 balls•Getty Images

Rohit’s world”They probably deserved to finish the game off,” Virat Kohli said at the presentation. “I thought we were down and out. We were gone at one stage”But Shami found a way to dismiss Williamson off the third ball of the final over – caught behind trying to access his favourite third man area – then, with New Zealand needing one run off the last ball, worked up his pace and targeted Taylor’s stumps to force the tie.”We came up with the fact we had to try and hit the stumps,” Kohli said. “Otherwise it’s a single anyway and we’d lose the game.”Given a lifeline, India looked to their best six-hitter and Rohit did not disappoint. He could only mistime the first couple of balls he faced, trying to slog across the line, but when it was all on the line, he went back to his best self, the one that holds still at the crease and hits through the line. Southee made the mistake of bowling length – aka the perfect invitation to be whacked out of the ground – and Rohit took full toll.”I think Rohit was outstanding today,” Kohli said. “The first half and the last two balls as well. We knew if he gets one hit then the bowler is under pressure. He is such a clean striker.”After the presentation, Rohit was seen perched on one of the advertising boards, still in full gear, including the helmet, and virtually everyone in an India shirt went up to him and shook his hand. He just looked dazed, as if he couldn’t believe what he had just done, as if, after more than ten years in international cricket, he had surprised himself with how good he really is.

The "outstanding" 5 ft 11 star Leeds could sign to be a Byram upgrade

Leeds United took another step on the road to securing automatic promotion back to the Premier League with a big 3-1 win over Hull City on Monday.

The Whites needed a late penalty from Crysencio Summerville, who took the ball off Joel Piroe to take the spot-kick, and a stoppage time long-ranger from Dan James to secure all three points at Elland Road, after Fabio Carvalho cancelled out Sam Byram's opener.

Ipswich Town are currently one point ahead of the club, in first place, whilst Leicester City are one point behind Daniel Farke's side, with one game in hand on the top two.

Daniel Farke before a game with Leeds United.

Leeds will be looking to avoid the lottery of the play-offs in the post-season and that means that they have to keep churning out results over the next six matches to ensure that they finish in one of the top two places to land automatic promotion to the Premier League, having been relegated from the top-flight last summer.

The Whites reportedly already have allowed some of their focus to shift to the summer transfer window and how they could improve their squad, whether they are in the Championship or the top division.

Leeds interest in Championship star

According to a recent report from the Belfast Telegraph, Leeds are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Sunderland star Trai Hume at the end of the season.

The outlet claimed that the Whites are considering a swoop to snap up the Northern Ireland international to bolster their options at full-back ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

It named Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Leicester as the other English teams keeping tabs on his progress at the Stadium of Light, which means that there could be Premier League competition for his signature.

Trai Hume

Reigning Serie A champions Napoli, who were in the Champions League this season, are also said to be weighing up a move for the talented right-back, who has seemingly caught the eye with his performances on the pitch in the Championship this season.

The report did not, however, reveal how much Sunderland would demand for the defender, who they paid £200k for in January 2022, from the interested clubs.

It, therefore, remains to be seen how viable a deal is for Leeds irrespective of the division they are due to be in next season. If the Whites are promoted to the Premier League, though, they could use that to tempt the full-back into making the move to Elland Road.

Farke could now land a big upgrade on current right-back Byram, who is out of contract at the end of this season, by securing a deal for Hume.

Sam Byram's Leeds season in numbers

The German boss brought the Leeds academy graduate back to Yorkshire for a second spell at the club, having also worked with him during their time together at Norwich, on a free transfer from the Canaries last summer.

Byram penned a one-year deal at Elland Road and has been a reliable performer when called upon throughout the season, at both left-back and right-back.

In four years at Norwich, the defender only played 54 matches in all competitions for the Norfolk-based outfit, with various injury issues, but has already racked up 32 appearances for Leeds this term.

As you can see in the table above, 29 of those games have come in the Championship as the versatile ace has provided Farke with defensive quality on the left and the right flank.

Byram, who scored the opening goal against Hull on Monday by bundling the ball in at the back post, has chipped in with two goals and one assist in those matches, with only one 'big chance' created for his teammates.

Sam Byram

Despite his solid performances in the Championship, his aforementioned injury issues with Norwich and the fact he turns 31 in September mean that it could make sense to shake hands and part ways in the summer.

His contract expires at the end of this season and Hume could be brought in as a natural successor to Byram, whilst being an upgrade on the 30-year-old gem who also has room to improve at the age of 22.

Why Trai Hume would be a Sam Byram upgrade

The Northern Irish whiz has been in fantastic form in the Championship for the Black Cats so far this season, and has outperformed the current Leeds man.

His progressive play on the ball could, firstly, make him a smart addition for Leeds from a stylistic perspective, given Farke's possession-based system.

Hume ranks within the top 16% of full-backs in the division for progressive passes (4.91) per 90, and the top 18% for pass success rate (81.6%), which shows that the 5 foot 11 dynamo looks to play forward to progress play for his side and is efficient at doing so in comparison to his positional peers.

The 22-year-old star, who was once hailed as "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting, also has fantastic defensive qualities that could make him a big upgrade on Byram.

As you can see in the table below, the Black Cats titan has outperformed the English defender in almost every key defensive metric in the Championship this season.

Hume wins possession back for his team more frequently, through tackles and interceptions, and wins a higher percentage of his duels with opposition attackers, on the ground and in the air, which shows that he is a more effective and efficient defender.

Like Byram, the young enforcer also has the versatility to be deployed at left-back or right-back. This means that the Leeds target could be the perfect signing to replace the former Norwich ace, given that he can operate and provide cover on either side.

Therefore, Farke must push to secure a deal for the talented defender to improve his squad during the summer transfer window, as Hume could offer more quality at the back with his fantastic defensive skills whilst also having room to develop at his young age.

Man Utd set to hold talks over deal to sell £275k-p/w forward

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a swoop for Crystal Palace's Dougie Freedman to become their new head of recruitment ahead of the summer.

The Independent have reported that the Red Devils want to snap up the sporting director from their Premier League rivals to immediately take over as their recruitment chief.

They are currently waiting for Dan Ashworth, their prospective technical director, to complete his gardening leave before officially joining from Newcastle United, which is why they are keen to bring Freedman in as soon as possible in the meantime.

Dan Ashworth for England.

If they snap up the Palace figure, he could have a big deal to oversee almost instantly as the club are reportedly set to hold talks over a sale of one of their forwards.

Latest Manchester United transfer news

According to HITC, the Red Devils want to cash in on Jadon Sancho for good this summer at the end of his loan spell with Borussia Dortmund. The report claims that both parties are in agreement that a permanent exit at the end of this season is the best solution, after the England international fell out with manager Erik ten Hag.

They state that Dortmund are keen to keep him in Germany for the 2024/25 campaign, and potentially beyond, as they would be interested in another loan deal with an option to make it permanent in the summer of 2025.

Jadon Sancho

However, United either want a sale this year or an obligation to buy at the end of any loan deal, which is a potential sticking point in negotiations. HITC add that the two clubs are now set to hold talks to discuss the former Manchester City's starlet future beyond the end of his current loan over the coming weeks.

The £275k-per-week outcast was described as "not important" by ten Hag earlier this term due to his unavailability after a falling out with the boss, which led to his return to Dortmund.

How is Sancho getting on at Dortmund?

Sancho rejoined the German giants during the January transfer window but has yet to rediscover his best form back in familiar settings over the last couple of months. The 23-year-old whiz registered eight goals and 11 assists in 24 Bundesliga starts during the 2020/21 campaign for Dortmund prior to his move to Old Trafford, which is a goal or an assist every 1.26 starts on average.

His statistics for the German side so far do not suggest that Ten Hag will regret how he handled the situation. In fact, his form may make it easier for United to sanction an exit, as it does not appear as though the young winger is ready to make an impact in the Premier League any time soon.

Ben Stokes takes top two spots in poll of cricket's greatest performances

Ben Stokes’ heroics at Headingley and Lord’s this summer have been voted as the sport’s greatest performances in half a century, in a poll conducted to mark the 50th anniversary of the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA).More than 1000 cricket fans were surveyed by the PCA and NatWest ahead of tonight’s PCA Awards in London, at which Stokes has been shortlisted for the prestigious Players’ Player of the Year award. And Stokes’ masterful 135 not out in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, which followed on from a vital spell of 3 for 56 in Australia’s second innings, has sealed top spot in the poll, ahead of his unbeaten 84 in the World Cup final against New Zealand, with which he carried England into the decisive trophy-winning Super Over.”When you are out there and trying to win the game you are in such a bubble you don’t let anything else get into that bubble,” Stokes told the PCA, as he recalled the events of that one-wicket win at Headingley.”Obviously, you are aware of the atmosphere and the situation and the crowd but then when I eventually hit the winning runs it, the feelings I had, just went and it was ‘oh my god, this is incredible’.”I was actually in the moment like everyone else was at that time, taking in the atmosphere, taking in the noise and looking around because everybody who was there in that ground on that day lived the same emotions as I did throughout that whole day, so to be able to take it all in and share that moment with them out there was pretty cool and something I’ll never forget.”Stokes’ twin performances pushed Andrew Flintoff’s matchwinning heroics at Edgbaston in 2005 into third place on the poll, with Ian Botham’s original Headingley miracle, his 149 not out in 1981, in fourth spot.Stuart Broad’s 8 for 15 against Australia, at Trent Bridge in 2015, was named at No.5, and Stokes even featured for a second time in the top ten, courtesy of his remarkable 258 from 198 balls at Cape Town in January 2016.In addition to voting on their favourite performances, the respondents to the survey also indicated an uplift in interest in cricket thanks to the events of a memorable summer. Fifty-four percent of female respondents said they were more inclined to follow cricket on television or radio, while 46 percent are likelier to attend a match. Among 16 to 24-year-olds, 54 percent showed a greater interest in playing the game.Reflecting on his memories of England’s World Cup win, Stokes added: “It will be something I will look back at in 15-20 years’ time and truly understand and appreciate what those two occasions meant and what they did for cricket.”We did not just want to win the World Cup and the Ashes this summer, we wanted to win over the country in terms of what we do with our cricket. We wanted to reach out to new fans, we wanted more people to take up cricket on what we could potentially achieve.”We have won the World Cup and had a brilliant summer which is what we wanted but I am also 100 percent convinced we have created new fans, inspired the next generation of England players and got people watching cricket again to a bigger extent than any of us could have imagined.”The PCA/NatWest Greatest Cricket Performances1. James Neesham fashions New Zealand's third straight win

The allrounder’s career-best 5 for 31 handed Afghanistan their third straight defeat

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu08-Jun-2019
As it happenedWhile some of his team-mates were having the time of their lives in the middle in the 2015 World Cup, James Neesham watched semi-final against South Africa from the Eden Park grass banks. He later fell out of love with cricket and was talked out of retirement. Then, he himself conceded that he hadn’t started his maiden World Cup well. After leaking 45 in five overs against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Neesham led New Zealand’s pace assault in Taunton, returning 5 for 31 – his best figures in professional cricket – to bask in the company of Richard Hadlee, Shane Bond, Tim Southee and Trent Boult. No other New Zealand seamer has claimed five wickets in a World Cup.Lockie Ferguson fell one short of joining that elite list, but was equally central to New Zealand dismissing Afghanistan for 172 and securing their third successive victory in the tournament. Ferguson’s Flash-like pace netted him 4 for 37, including the wicket of Rashid Khan who was bowled off the helmet. The blow was so nasty that Rashid failed two concussion tests and did not bowl in the chase. There was no Mujeeb Ur Rahman either – he was dropped – and Afghanistan were forced into using part-time legspinner Rahmat Shah. In stark contrast, New Zealand didn’t need Mitchell Santner at all.James Neesham is clapped off the pitch at the end of the Afghanistan innings.•Getty Images

Despite the unavailability of their premier spinners, Afghanistan made New Zealand’s batsmen work hard for their runs in the chase. Aftab Alam, who had replaced the rested Dawlat Zadran, hit a hard length with his very first ball and had Martin Guptill lobbing a bat-pad catch to point for a golden duck. Colin Munro, who had kept his place in the side, ahead of a fit-again Henry Nicholls, had a promising start, but he wound up slicing a catch to third man for 22 off 24 balls.Watch on Hotstar (India only) – Full highlights of the matchThis brought Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, and familiar nervy running into focus. Williamson survived a run-out chance on 22 after responding slowly to a single. That Hashmatullah Shahidi couldn’t effect a direct hit or fling a more accurate throw to the keeper saved Williamson. Mohammad Nabi then teased the New Zealand captain with his donkey drops and drift, making him overhit the ball and lose his shape in the process.Rahmat, meanwhile, scratched Taylor’s outside edge with his first ball and continued to trouble the batsman with his turn and dip. Afghanistan had deployed a square gully and point for Williamson, blocking his favourite dab to third man. They steadily built pressure on New Zealand, but Williamson and Taylor absorbed it and bed in to put their side on top. Taylor played all around a dipping full-toss from Alam and was bowled for 48, snapping a vital 89-run stand, but Williamson had progressed to a 77-ball half-century.Williamson ushered New Zealand home in the company of Tom Latham, who had earlier snapped up five catches behind the stumps – just one short of tying the all-time ODI record. The exalted company Neesham keeps•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

It was Afghanistan opener Hazratullah Zazai who had set the early pace with almighty leg-side hoicks and baseball swings. He was reprieved twice – on 16 and 18 – and went after anything that was remotely close to his body. Noor Ali Zadran, who had replaced the injured Mohammad Shahzad at the top, rolled out some exquisite front-foot drives at the other end to push Afghanistan to 61 for 0 in the Powerplay. Then, it was time for Williamson to #UnleashtheNeesh. Neesham dangled a wide ball – possibly wider than a set of stumps outside off – and Zazai took the bait, carving a catch to sweeper cover. Just like that Afghanistan lost 4 for 4, with Neesham collecting three in three overs. He fooled Rahmat Shah with one that held up in the pitch while splice-jarring bounce got the better of captain Gulbadin Naib.Mohammad Nabi and Naijibullah Zadran, too, were bounced out by Neesham as Afghanistan were teetering at 109 for 6. After finishing a career-best spell, Neesham drew warm pats on his shoulder from his seniors Williamson and Taylor. Job well done.No. 4 Shahidi, however, found a way against seam and bounce and held on limpet-like either side of a rain delay. Ferguson had blasted out Noor Ali and welcomed Shahidi with a 147kph ball that rocketed past the outside edge. Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme gave him no swinging room either, but Shahidi ground his way to an 84-ball half-century.However, with his partners appearing and disappearing, Shahidi, too, swung for the hills and added 20-plus stands with wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhil and No.11 Hamid Hassan. Aftab Alam contributed with 14 off 10 balls, helping take his side past 150. Shahidi, though, was the last man dismissed as Afghanistan left nearly nine overs unused in their innings. New Zealand ultimately closed out the game with 17.5 overs to spare, handing Afghanistan their third straight defeat.

Arsenal can sign their own Rodri in swoop for £51m maestro

Arsenal next take to the field against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday as they crashed out of the FA Cup in the third round to Liverpool, ensuring they have the weekend off.

Perhaps the defeat could be a blessing in disguise as it could allow Mikel Arteta to focus all his attention on trying to win either the Premier League or Champions League.

With the January transfer window closing this coming Thursday, the Spaniard will be spending the next few days working hard on trying to bring a new signing or two to the Emirates, and according to reports, it looks as though he is pushing to sign a Spanish midfielder…

Arsenal’s search for new signings

Last January, Arteta signed Jorginho, Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard as they looked to end their 19-year wait for a league title.

Unfortunately, the Gunners endured an end-of-season collapse and Manchester City won the league for the third straight season.

The Spaniard has yet to make a signing this month, but adding in a fresh face or two could give the club the boost they need in order to establish themselves as genuine title contenders.

According to Bild’s Bayern Insider podcast (via the Standard), Arsenal are currently pushing hard to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi before the end of the window.

Martin Zubimendi.

Arteta has seemingly held talks regarding a move for his compatriot, and despite interest from Bayern Munich, it looks as though the north Londoners are doing everything they can to lure him to England.

He will not come cheap, however, as the player currently has a £51m release clause in his current deal with the La Liga side, and if Arteta is to bring him to the club before next Thursday, he will have to break the bank to do so.

Latest Arsenal transfer news: Euro winner closing in; striker nears N5 exit

With a month remaining in the transfer window, Arsenal are busy lining up their transfer targets.

ByHal Fish Jul 31, 2024

If the manager does secure his signature, Zubimendi could turn out to be his very own Rodri, as the duo showcase similar traits, and it could be a stroke of genius considering how well the current Manchester City gem has performed since joining the club.

Martin Zubimendi could be Arsenal’s own Rodri

Zubimendi was hailed by the Spanish national team manager Jose Luis de la Fuente as among the finest defensive midfielders in the world alongside the City maestro, saying:

“For me, they are the best midfielders in the world in their position. And they are perfectly compatible.”

According to WhoScored, both Zubimendi and Rodri count aerial duels as one of their strengths, while they also excel at blocking the ball, suggesting that they offer something similar to their respective teams.

This season, the Sociedad midfielder has completed 57 tackles and interceptions, won 50% of his challenges and currently holds an 84.9% pass success rate, which demonstrates his defensive abilities off the ball along with showcasing his skills at dictating the play.

Rodri is certainly a class above when it comes to passing, however, as he currently holds a 92.8% pass success rate while making 52 tackles and interceptions along with winning 60.7% of his challenges, proving that Zubimendi still has some work to do, despite the obvious comparisons.

The duo can provide a reliable attacking threat from the heart of the midfield as Zubimendi (five goal contributions) and Rodri (seven goal contributions) both aim to push forward on a regular basis, which could be a bonus for Arteta.

The City sensation is at the peak of his powers currently, helping his side win five major trophies during 2023, including the Champions League and Premier League.

Zubimendi is three years his junior, but he is already showing signs that he could develop into Rodri 2.0 should he move from Spain to England.

Martin Zubimendi has excelled at Real Sociedad

Zubimendi's ability to operate across a wide range of roles led U23 scout Antonio Mango to describe him as a “special talent” back in October 2022, and since then, his development has led to clubs such as Arsenal and Bayern Munich looking to sign him.

Since making his debut for the Basque club during the 2018/19 season, the 24-year-old has gone on to make 173 appearances for Sociedad and has firmly established himself as a key player for the club in recent seasons.

Zubimendi is at his best playing in a more deep-lying role in front of the centre-backs, yet he is comfortable playing in a central-midfield role, as evidenced by the fact he has scored four goals in La Liga this term, doubling his best-ever tally with just under half of the season to go.

Indeed, the Spain international even ranks fourth among the squad for goals and assists in the top flight (five), indicating how much he has improved this aspect of his game, while he also ranks third for accurate passes per game (40.1), third for interceptions per game (1.2) and sixth for accurate long balls per game (1.6).

His performances have led to the midfielder gaining international recognition as he has earned four caps for Spain since making his international debut back in 2021, and it is likely that he will be a member of their Euro 2024 squad this summer.

By this time, Arteta will be hoping Zubimendi will be an Arsenal player, and the Rodri-esque gem could certainly slot in their midfield with ease.

The manager appears to be building a squad for the future and a midfield three of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Zubimendi would make for a formidable force, no doubt about it.

This trio could offer everything from defensive stability to a solid attacking threat, and if the Gunners are serious about building a dynasty that could challenge the Man City/Liverpool hegemony of recent seasons, signing a talent such as Zubimendi is imperative to this goal.

He may cost a lot, but the 24-year-old could be worth every single penny and go a long way to the club challenging on both the domestic and European scenes.

Will he join the club this month? Only time will tell.

Klopp must unleash Liverpool’s £40k-p/w "elite talent" alongside Diaz

Liverpool turn their attention away from the Premier League this weekend as they prepare to travel to The Emirates to face Arsenal in the FA Cup.

The Reds may not have wanted to face one of their direct rivals in the top-flight in the third round of the competition but that is the size of the task they now face this evening.

Jurgen Klopp's side head into this game off the back of an impressive 4-2 victory over Newcastle United last time out in the Premier League at Anfield.

The German tactician may now want to make some alterations to his XI from that game to provide some of the players on the fringes of the squad with a rare opportunity to start.

With that in mind, Klopp must now unleash Harvey Elliott from the start against the Gunners to produce an exciting link-up with Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz's season in numbers

The Colombia international could start out on the wing with the England U21 international as part of the midfield three on his side of the pitch behind him.

Diaz has not been a consistent contributor at the top end of the pitch for the Reds this season with a lack of goals and assists in the top-flight.

The 26-year-old forward has produced three goals and one assist in 19 top-flight appearances and 14 starts, which is one goal contribution every 4.75 games on average.

However, the exciting attacker has won a penalty, in the win over Newcastle, and provided an assist, against Burnley, in his last two matches.

He will now be hoping to contribute to a goal for the third game in a row this evening and starting Elliott just behind him in midfield could help with that.

The statistics that show why Elliott should start

The 20-year-old whiz has only started two matches in the Premier League so far this season but his form in the cup competitions has been particularly impressive.

Elliott has started all six of the club's Europa League games and showcased his progressive talent from a midfield or wide position for Liverpool.

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.

The £40k-per-week dynamo currently ranks within the top 14% of midfielders within the competition for progressive passes (7.16) and the top 6% for progressive carries (3.33) per 90.

This shows that he has the quality to progress his side up the pitch on a regular basis, through passes or carries, and this is why the young gem could be perfect behind Diaz.

The "elite talent" – as he was once dubbed by scout Jacek Kulig – can constantly provide the forward with the ball in advanced positions by progressing possession forward to the attacking players from deep areas of the pitch.

Elliott also made nine key passes and created three 'big chances' in three EFL Cup appearances earlier this season, which shows that the former Fulham prodigy can also provide excellent creativity from midfield to link up with Diaz.

Therefore, Klopp must now unleash the Reds youngster from the start against Arsenal this evening, and it would be an opportunity for him to stake a claim for more starts in the Premier League.
