Adam Armstrong could benefit from Southampton signing "first-class" PL star

Southampton are now staggeringly 19 games unbeaten in the Championship after a thumping 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend. Russell Martin's Saints are on song and look like a tough nut to crack at the top end of the division.

The south coast side are now within touching distance of the top two places in the division, with the whole squad playing their part against the Owls – four different goalscorers chipping in against Danny Rohl's beleaguered away side to secure a comprehensive win.

Yet, although Adam Armstrong got on the scoresheet himself for the high-flyers in the victory, the prolific Southampton man could be supercharged even further with this potential addition in through the door at St Mary's this month.

Southampton going after Premier League winger

talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook revealed on social media late last month that the promotion-chasing Saints were interested in bringing David Brooks to the club on loan, with a further development recently only adding more fuel to the fire over a potential deal.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT in the past few days, journalist Dean Jones confirmed that Martin's side are going after Brooks with the transfer 'one to genuinely keep an open mind about' from a Southampton perspective.

A deal to bring in the current AFC Bournemouth winger could see Armstrong moved back to a far more comfortable centre-forward position, Martin shoehorning his star-man into a right-wing role owing to Che Adams' upturn in form.

Acknowledging that this decision to play the Saints number nine out wide recently has made Armstrong a 'bit annoyed' when speaking to BBC Radio Solent directly after the Wednesday demolition job, bringing in Brooks could see Martin opt to start the exciting Cherries attacker there instead to link up with Armstrong up top.

Southampton forward Adam Armstrong.

If Adams also decides to move on from St Mary's this transfer window, it's a win-win deal for all involved.

Why Brooks would benefit Armstrong

Brooks and Armstrong could make the Southampton attack even more terrifying for Championship defences to attempt to thwart, 4-0 and 5-0 wins on their own patch becoming customary now even without the additional firepower of the Welsh winger in the side.

David Brooks

During his last full campaign at this level for the Cherries, the slick attacker managed to contribute to 11 goals in total with five goals and six assists tallied from 32 games.

With those numbers in the Saints set-up now, Brooks wouldn't be far off the likes of Samuel Edozie and Ryan Fraser who both have five and seven assists next to their name respectively in an attack just oozing strength in numbers.

Yet, the 26-year-old can stand out from the pack making the short trip across the South Coast from Bournemouth to Southampton if signed.

Boasting a promotion to the Premier League on his Cherries CV could make him a worthwhile buy alone, alongside glowing comments from previous managers who single out how dazzling Brooks can be on his day.

At the peak of his powers in the top flight during the 2018/19 season – helping himself to five goals and seven assists across a breakthrough season – the then Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe praised Brooks for his "intelligent" play on the ball after scoring in a 2-0 win over Brighton. Further praise would be forthcoming during Scott Parker's time at the helm, the former midfielder labelling Brooks as "first-class".

Armstrong being unleashed back in a lone striker role is a no-brainer move, the 26-year-old becoming more of an assist machine than a goalscoring one in recent weeks but could well be the prolific finisher Southampton require to mount a more aggressive charge for the automatic promotion spaces.

Finding the back of the net an astounding 70 times at second-tier level during his career to date, Martin will hope the goals continue to flow with Brooks next to him in the team with a promotion to celebrate come the end of the season as a result.

Imran Khan rejects PCB's new domestic model

Imran Khan, the Pakistan prime minister and patron of the PCB, has rejected the board’s new proposed domestic cricket model, insisting that departments should have no role in the game

Umar Farooq27-Mar-2019Imran Khan, the Pakistan prime minister and patron of the PCB, has rejected the board’s new proposed domestic cricket model, insisting that departments should have no role in the game. The PCB put together a model in which department teams such as HBL, WAPDA and PIA would remain relevant stakeholders alongside regional sides – although initially even the PCB had decided to strip departments of their playing rights. But this idea was knocked down by Imran, who does not want departments in the system in any capacity. He has instead directed the PCB to rework the structure to include just six provisional teams – two from Punjab, and one each from Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan and Gilgit-Baltistan.Imran was a strong advocate of a domestic structure with only regional sides for much of his playing career, enamoured especially by the Australian Shield Cricket structure. There are many now – as there were then – who believe such a model will not work in Pakistan, where the population is nearly nine times that of Australia. The prime minister believes that the sizeable talent in the country must not be allowed to go to waste, with it being the PCB’s responsibility to provide a conducive environment for that talent to flourish. He was also concerned about the exodus of cricket talent over the years. With all this in mind, a PCB task team worked out a plan to reduce the number of regional teams in the system, but also kept the departments alive, making them sponsor of the regional teams and in effect, giving them a significant role in the domestic circuit.A presentation on the new model was prepared by Haroon Rasheed, the PCB’s director of domestic cricket. A team of PCB officials then called on Imran for a briefing. While the model came close to what Imran had asked for, the role of the departments in any capacity was instantly ruled out.The proposal was based on a structure that included eight regional teams, either from a city or from a province, while the various departments like HBL, WAPDA and PIA – long the backbone of Pakistan’s domestic cricket – were constituted to finance each region. The idea behind this proposal was to make each region self-sufficient, with funding from both the PCB as well as the departments. The PCB confirmed such a meeting had taken place, but sought to downplay any rift between the prime minister’s objectives and the PCB’s, telling ESPNcricinfo they had been proceeding in accordance with Imran’s directives. There are currently 16 teams on the domestic circuit playing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy – eight from the regions and eight departments. The new model aimed to cut down the number of top-tier teams to just eight, with only the regional sides allowed to play first-class cricket.

Renegades hit by Nabi loss as Afghanistan call back allrounder

The Renegades had expected Nabi to be available for the finals if the club made it that far

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2019Melbourne Renegades have suffered a big blow ahead of their BBL semi-final against Sydney Sixers with Afghanistan calling Mohammad Nabi back for a training camp. The Renegades had expected Nabi to be available for the finals if the club made it that far, but a camp ahead of the series against Ireland later this month will now take precedence. It leaves them without a key allrounder with Nabi having played an important role in the middle order and with his offspin which has often been used in the Powerplay. He has taken eight wickets in the competition with an economy rate of 7.38 alongside being the team’s third-highest run-scorer with 228 in 13 innings.”We’re disappointed to lose a player on the eve of the finals series but we understand the rules around international call ups and know there can be some unpredictability around when players are called into camp,” head coach Andrew McDonald said.”Nabi has been a valuable contributor throughout the season and his skills with bat and ball as well as leadership abilities will be missed. We are proud of the way we have been able to cover the absence of key players throughout the season and we’re confident in the depth of our squad. There is now an exciting opportunity for someone to come into the team and play an important role for us.”One option the Renegades could use to replace Nabi’s batting is to recall Cameron White who is expected to have recovered from a hamstring injury. However, White would not be able to cover Nabi’s overs. It has yet to be confirmed where the second semi-final will be hosted, but the likely scenario is that the Renegades will be away at the SCG unless there is a significant drop in the Sixers’ net run-rate in their final match against Melbourne Stars.

Sky Sports reporter: Liverpool in the race to sign £42k-p/w “elite talent”

Liverpool are one of several clubs in the race to bring a rising star to the Premier League, according to a reliable journalist.

Liverpool's summer signings

The Reds secured four fresh faces during the previous window in the form of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, but Jurgen Klopp appears keen to bolster his ranks in the centre even further in the coming months.

The Merseyside outfit have recently been linked with moves for Benfica’s Joao Neves and Nice’s Khephren Thuram, but should a deal for any of those two fail to come to fruition, it sounds like the board have already made their interest known in a more advanced alternative.

Klopp could ruin Gravenberch with Liverpool swoop for £35m "monster"

The Reds would make a grave error in making a move for this exciting midfielder’s signature.

Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz has worked his way up through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to their first-team, where he’s since gone on to make a total of 121 senior appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Wirtz statistics).

Back in March, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Germany’s international was being followed by those at Anfield with a view to a summer move, and even though a switch didn't take place before the deadline, the 20-year-old is set to be the subject of a second approach.

FSG enter the running for Florian Wirtz

Taking to X, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg confirmed that Liverpool are interested in Wirtz, but they are set to face stiff competition from four other clubs.

More on Florian Wirtz: Bayer 04 hopes that he will stay for one more season. Bosses are convinced that he will definitely leave the club, at the latest, in the summer of 2025. All big clubs are in (Real, ManCity, Liverpool, ManUtd…). If they can really afford the package, FCBayern has the best chances! Wirtz has not given any club the commitment, he is 100% focused on Leverkusen.”

Klopp could land an "elite talent" in Wirtz

Across all competitions this season, Wirtz has a remarkable 16 contributions (ten assists and six goals), to his name in 18 appearances, showing how prolific he can be in the final third, and he’s constantly posing a threat to the opposition’s defence.

Sponsored by Adidas, Pulheim’s native currently ranks in the 95th percentile for successful take-ons, displaying his ability to use his pace, dribble past his marker and create as many chances as possible for both himself and his fellow teammates in the attacking areas of the pitch (FBRef – Wirtz statistics).

Xabi Alonso’s £42k-per-week earner (Bayer Leverkusen salaries), is also a versatile operator having been deployed in six various positions over the pitch since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and two roles in the midfield, so he’d be useful in providing cover should any unexpected injuries occur.

Considering all of the positive qualities that he possesses, Wirtz has been hailed an “elite talent” by football scout Jacek Kulig, so when you look at how many teams are chasing him, it would be a massive coup if he was to choose Liverpool as his next destination over their fellow competitors.

Sunderland eye big Mowbray upgrade in 4-2-3-1 coach who makes "perfect sense"

Sunderland look as if they're going in a completely new direction for their next appointment after Tony Mowbray, opting to appoint a fresh and bold manager in contrast to Mowbray's safe pair of hands and conservative approach from the dug-out.

The 60-year-old had done a commendable job this season and last – steering the Black Cats to the playoffs last term and leaving the club in ninth spot this campaign – but disharmony behind the scenes between the former Blackburn Rovers manager and the Sunderland hierarchy has proven to be another reason behind his abrupt dismissal on Monday night.

The next manager does have his work cut out for him, the promotion hopefuls have an inexperienced and young squad arguably punching above their weight slightly – Mowbray able to have the misfiring Black Cats within touching distance of the playoff spots, despite lacking a prolific and adept striker up top ever since Ross Stewart left in the summer.

If the Black Cats can, however, land this dream replacement for the outgoing manager, the decision to axe Mowbray begins to make much more sense.

Will Still is seemingly the favourite for the Sunderland vacancy now, the eclectic current Stade De Reims boss the new frontrunner for the Championship job post.

Sunderland manager latest

Various names far and wide are being linked to the Sunderland job, with a report from TEAMTalk yesterday revealing that Will Still and Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna are fancied names near the top of an ever-growing short-list.

It would go in line with the Black Cats wanting to try something different with a younger manager in the dug-out, the statement released by the club in the direct aftermath of the sacking stated: "This was a difficult decision to make, but we remain loyal to our ambition and our strategy."

Five managers Sunderland could turn to after sacking Tony Mowbray

Sunderland unexpectedly relieved Mowbray of his duties last night, with a number of managers now rumoured for the Stadium of Light vacancy.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 5, 2023

Still could indeed fit the mould of what chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus desires when it comes to their next manager, the Belgian manager is certainly unusual and unorthodox in his mannerisms.

But, his stock in the only game is only rising as a 31-year-old with a bright future.

Will Still's managerial record at Reims

Still continues to excite and enthral Reims fans from the dug-out in France, the once unproven Belgian boss – who notably cites playing Football Manager as a reason for how he got into professional management – has now earned his stripes in Ligue 1.

As manager of the French club, the 4-2-3-1 coach has overseen 33 wins from 69 games in charge. Along the way, Still's teams have also been known to be potent up top – Reims scoring 102 goals from those matches, one-time Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun scoring 22 of those last season as a key striker under Still.

His most impressive feat however was masterminding an 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions as manager when joining, resulting in football journalist Ed Aarons referring to the much-loved Reims boss as 'highly-rated' in the wake of rumours circulating that he will be the next Black Cats boss.

His Reims side are still succeeding in the French top division this season, occupying fifth spot currently above the likes of Marseille and Lyon.

Freelance sports writer Robin Bairner even responded to the rumours by stating that this appointment would make "perfect sense", a new era kickstarted at the Stadium of Light by a boss who has a far novel approach compared to Mowbray.

Still himself has also spoken of his dream one day to manage in England, stating in a Sky Sports interview earlier this year that he'd be open to Championship job offers – "I think the Championship rivals many of the top leagues in the world. All the doors are open. I'm not closing anything at any time."

Unlike Mowbray – who has long languished in the EFL across various clubs – Still has more recent and current experience thriving in one of Europe's top five leagues, thus suggesting that he could be the upgrade required to help steer the club into the Premier League.

Sunderland fans will watch on with intrigue at how this saga plays out regarding a new manager coming in, focusing on this weekend too with hopes that they can beat West Brom without a brand-new boss in the dug-out yet.

Reporter shares £15m+ Erik ten Hag sack update from Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is seemingly under pressure at Old Trafford, and one update has shared details over a potential sacking.

Update on Erik ten Hag’s future

It has been a season to forget so far for the Red Devils and Ten Hag, with back-to-back 3-0 defeats at Old Trafford to Manchester City and Newcastle United in the space of four days. The two defeats have meant that Man Utd have now lost eight of their first 15 matches in all competitions this season, something they have suffered for the first time since 1962/63. Ten Hag’s position as manager has been a hot topic of conversation, although recent reports have claimed that the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe view Ten Hag's position as safe for the time being.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed that some of the Man Utd players fear Ten Hag’s approach is affecting team morale, with his no-nonsense style resulting in clashes with players such as Jadon Sancho in recent months. Another update involving the manager has emerged, one on what the club would need to pay if they part ways with the Dutchman. Football Insider reporter Sean Fisher shared an update on Wednesday prior to the EFL Cup defeat to Newcastle United, stating it would cost the club more than £15m to part ways with Ten Hag.

“If the United hierarchy chooses to sack Ten Hag this season, Football Insider understands that it would cost the club a compensation payout of over £15million. His contract at United runs until 2025 with an option to extend for a further year, and sacking Ten Hag would require the Glazers to pay him his guaranteed salary for the length of his contract.

He added: "United would also have to cough up significant compensation fees to dismiss his backroom staff."

Ten Hag’s record at Man Utd

The 53-year-old arrived at Old Trafford last summer and enjoyed a solid first season with the club, finishing in the top four, winning the EFL Cup and reaching the final of the FA Cup. However, it has been a season to forget so far during the current campaign, and defeat to Fulham could see them slip into the bottom half of the Premier League this weekend.

Overall, though, as can be seen, Ten Hag’s record isn’t disastrous by any stretch, averaging over two points per game with the Red Devils and one victory shy of hitting 50. However, the club's recent form could be a worry for Man Utd officials, and if things don’t improve prior to the New Year, they may feel their hand could be forced into making a change and subsequently paying out Ten Hag the £15m+ fee.

Sussex fall to Chris Rushworth, Durham's heritage cricketer

Durham, dismissed for 103, looked lost, but Chris Rushworth was outstanding, dragging them back into the contest by claiming figures of 8 for 51

David Hopps11-Sep-2018

ScorecardSussex ran aground against the unwavering qualities of Chris Rushworth at Chester-le-Street as a day that should have confirmed them as serious promotion challengers instead threatened to undermine their challenge at a critical time.Having dismissed Durham for 103, Sussex should have observed a day of blue skies and imagined that the match might be in their grasp by nightfall, only for Rushworth, with subtle variations in nibbling but far from impossible conditions, to begin an extraordinary turnaround. As rugged as the Durham Heritage Coast, he turned in a redoubtable shift of eight for 51 against somewhat fatalistic batting, the second best figures of his career. What should have been a potentially matchwinning lead instead amounted to a paltry 19 runs.Cameron Steel’s composed, unbeaten century – only Durham’s fifth of a difficult batting summer (they are hardly alone in that) – then impressed upon Sussex what might have as Durham built a lead of 201 with six wickets remaining. It is a definite, if by no means impregnable, advantage. This was a naïve batting display by Sussex who hit out against Rushworth’s persistent probing as if fearing a ghost in a fog. Their promotion tilt has gathered pace despite a top six hardly replete with pedigree and this was a day when more nous would have served them well. As one of only three frontline seamers, Rushworth bore a heavy burden. “He keeps coming,” said Sussex’s Ollie Robinson afterwards. And no wonder.Rushworth is not just a county cricketer; he is a heritage cricketer, a player who with every insistent delivery represents the traditions and the culture of the region that he represents. Such qualities have been indispensable during Durham’s recent travails and when his benefit season was announced at close of play it did not seem, as so often, an anachronism, but a richly deserved recognition to a loyal servant who given good fortune can bundle in for a good few years yet. This Chester-le-Street pitch has been known to flatten out in the third and fourth innings this season (a timing that is expressed in these parts as: “When we can’t get any batting bonus points” – they have two). Durham have overcome Derbyshire and Leicestershire from unpromising positions so they will be aware that Sussex could do the same.Durham, seven down overnight, had been duly rounded up for 103, but the first day, according to the locals, had been a foul, malevolent day with the biggest black cloud seen over the ground since the ECB relegated them for financial difficulties. Sussex, by comparison, batted in conditions where, as AE Housman had it, “Up from the eastern sea / Soars the delightful day.” Just an hour’s defiance against the new ball could have made all the difference.Remorse, though, took hold instead as Rushworth set to work. Tom Haines fell for nought, fifth ball, an ugly poke to third slip; his fellow opener, Phil Salt, attempting to dominate from the outset, came a stride down to clip in front of square and fell to an excellent catch by Graham Clark.Luke Wells was bowled through the gate by Matt Salisbury next ball, which did’nt just continue a lean season but was the moment that for much of the innings seemed designed to deny the persistent Rushworth all ten until David Wiese, the last wicket to fall, was lbw to give Salisbury a second wicket. Most of Rushworth’s wickets came to deliveries cutting back, such as the one that struck Harry Finch’s off stump as he offered no stroke, the bowler’s 400th first-class wicket for Durham. Ben Brown was lbw to one that might have been a tad igh. But tere were giveaways, too, such as Michael Burgess’ pull to a fielder in the deep. For once, there was no Sussex late-order recovery, Will Smith expertly snaffling a second catch at point to dismiss Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer outdone first ball by one that left him and Ollie Robinson’s glide knocked on by the wicketkeeper to first slip where Paul Collingwood proved that your reflexes don’t go as quickly as some people think. In response, Steel and Alex Lees put on 72 for the first wicket before Lees was clearly aggrieved to be given out caught behind on 43 off the bowling of Robinson. He left with half-a-dozen glares back at the umpire; “never look back” is a decent life motto, especially if you are a county batsman wanting to avoid a fine. Archer, who bowled impatiently, then accounted for Smith and Clark, but Sussex’s frustration returned when Steel was given a life on 95 when he top edged a delivery from Jordan, but Salt, running backwards from slip, slipped as he misjudged the catch. For all Steel’s contribution, the day belonged to Rushworth. “It has been a good day: personal milestones, good news and putting us in a winning position,” he said. “If you looked at the state of the game this morning and you told someone what was going to happen they wouldn’t believe you. It has been an incredible day of cricket.”
