Not Keane: Moyes can fix Branthwaite blow by unleashing Everton "revelation"

Everton’s defeat at Manchester City last weekend was a setback many have to endure across a Premier League campaign, being put to the sword by Erling Haaland.

But David Moyes knows his side have made headway since the summer all the same, 12th after eight matches but within a stone’s throw of European contention.

Recruiting the likes of Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer was a concerted effort toward adding difference-makers to the ranks.

But Jarrad Branthwaite might be the most influential of them all, and the hitch in his recovery from injury could be a significant blow for Moyes’ side.

The latest on Branthwaite's fitness

For the second season running, Everton have been without Branthwaite’s powerful service for the opening months. Now, as we near November, the England defender requires surgery on his persistent muscular problems.

The complication from the hamstring issue he has been recovering from is expected to rule him out for a lengthy period, and though an exact timeframe has not been provided, it’s likely we will not see the “absolute monster”, as he has been described in the past by talent scout Jacek Kulig, until 2026.

While the Merseysiders have impressed from a defensive vantage, nine goals conceded, Branthwaite’s inclusion would only elevate Moyes’ project.

Michael Keane, 32, has proved a solid deputy in his countryman’s stead this season, starting each of Everton’s eight Premier League matches.

However, there’s another member of the Toffees squad who Moyes might want to consider dropping into the middle. When this has occurred thus far this term, it could be argued that Everton look a more balanced and smoother outfit.

Everton "revelation" could replace Branthwaite

Everton have improved since Moyes replaced Sean Dyche in the dugout, but the issues picked out at the start of the campaign – the concerns over the quality of the strikers and the lack of depth on the defensive flanks – remain key points of discussion as we inch toward the winter transfer market.

Despite the problems on the flanks, Moyes might want to consider drawing Jake O’Brien into his natural centre-half berth, having utilised the Irishman almost exclusively as a makeshift right-back since arriving at Goodison Park in January.

Jake O'Brien celebrates for Everton

O’Brien, 24, joined Everton from Lyon for £15m in August 2024, but he was left on the periphery for the bulk of Dyche’s half-term in charge last year.

Moyes saw a left-field solution in the towering defender, though, and placed him on the wing of his backline. There he remained for the duration of the campaign.

Now several months into the new campaign, the “revelation”, as he was hailed by journalist Zach Lowy for his performances in France, remains Moyes’ most trusted lieutenant.

But the time has come for him to return home. Everton might have a paucity of potential at right-back, but a natural option in the role may well prove to iron out tactical wrinkles which are proving to the detriment of Everton’s fluency.

O’Brien, after all, stands at 6 foot 5 and struggles to progress the ball effectively. On top of this, Sofascore record that he has lost 60% of his ground duels in the Premier League this year, which runs counter to his combative and crunching qualities when operating in his natural habitat.

James Garner isn’t a natural right-back, but he is good on the ball and could fill in if need be.

Keane is an industrious defender, but he’s slow and limited on the ball. Everton are all about evolution right now, but if Branthwaite is booked in for an extended stay in the infirmary, shifting O’Brien into his natural position is surely a no-brainer.

Moyes could have a bigger English talent than Grealish in Everton's "beast"

Tahir's four lifts Amazon Warriors to top of the table

Imran Tahir’s four-wicket haul outshone Kaleem Sana’s efforts as Guyana Amazon Warriors clinched a comprehensive 57-run win against Dubai Capitals, moving to the top of the table in the Global Super League, in Guyana. After being sent in to bat, Amazon Warriors posted 138 for 7, before their bowlers delivered a clinical performance to bowl out Capitals for just 81 in 15.4 overs.Amazon Warriors’ innings was held together by Moeen Ali, who played a composed knock of 40 off 38 balls. Sherfane Rutherford provided valuable support with a handy 33 off 23 deliveries, striking crucial boundaries during the middle overs. The duo added momentum at a critical phase after Amazon Warriors were reduced to 27 for 3 inside the powerplay. Romario Shepherd chipped in with a late cameo, adding 15 off just nine balls, pushing the total beyond 130. For Capitals, left-arm seamer Sana was the standout bowler, claiming an impressive 4 for 31 in his four overs, with three of those coming in the death overs. In their reply, Capitals never got going. Both openers fell cheaply, and the middle order crumbled under pressure. Dwaine Pretorius and Shepherd tightened the screws early, with the latter striking twice in the fifth over. Tahir then took over with a masterful spell, returning figures of 4 for 12 from his 3.4 overs.None of the Capitals batters, apart from Sediqullah Atal and Niroshan Dickwella, managed to cross 20. A brief glimmer of hope came through a 27-run stand off just 12 balls between the two, but once they fell in quick succession, the innings unraveled rapidly. From 36 for 1, Capitals collapsed to 66 for 8 and were eventually bowled out for 81.

Coughlin rains on Notts parade after sprinkler takes centre stage

Nottinghamshire 297 for 5 (Slater 92, McCann 79) trail Durham 378 (Ackermann 116, O’Neill 5-81) by 81 runsA couple of key scalps for seamer Paul Coughlin in the final session left Nottinghamshire with work to do on day two of their Rothesay County Championship match against Durham. The Sunderland-born 32-year-old, whose had two injury-plagued years at Trent Bridge, bowled key man Joe Clarke (37) and had 19-year-old prospect Freddie McCann (79) caught behind before Nottinghamshire closed the day on 297 for five in their first innings in reply to Durham’s 378, having also lost Jack Haynes just before the close.Nottinghamshire had looked well placed at 225 for two after opener Ben had provided a platform with a fine 92, before Coughlin’s spell set them back.Earlier, following a start delayed by 45 minutes after a sprinkler malfunction left pools of water on the outfield, Coughlin had been last Durham man out as Australian fast bowler Fergus O’Neill completed a debut five-wicket haul. For spectators present when the bails failed to drop after Durham’s Colin Ackermann was bowled on day one, the delay was another freakish occurrence they could have done without under a near-cloudless sky, even if it initially brought amusement. As the umpires’ attention was drawn to a leaking sprinkler nozzle a few feet from the stumps at the Stuart Broad End, comic scenes ensued as the offending sprinkler and several others then suddenly burst into life, sending players and officials scurrying to avoid a soaking. The water was turned off after a matter of seconds. Yet enough was deposited on the playing area to hold things up for a frustratingly long period.Once play did start, the players went off again after just 14 minutes for the change of innings after Durham, 370 for nine overnight, lost their final wicket. Not that O’Neill was complaining. A leg-before verdict against Coughlin gave the bustling seamer figures of five for 81 on debut.Durham could have done with O’Neill’s in-form Australia A team-mate Brendan Doggett at their disposal with injuries depleting their pool of seam bowlers here, although in the event, the available quartet served them well.Doggett, who took 11 wickets in the match to help South Australia win the Sheffield Shield final a week ago, will join them for next week’s home fixture against Warwickshire.Nottinghamshire openers Slater and Haseeb Hameed negotiated the first 16 overs to be 48 without loss at lunch, Hameed surviving a chance to wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson off England’s Matthew Potts on eight. By tea, the home side were probably where they wanted to be at 166 for two, although they had suffered a blow moments before when Slater fell.Potts had got his man when skipper Hameed was leg before for 27 but the left-handed Slater looked in imperious form, having just pinged away his 19th four, most of which raced away to the short boundary on the Bridgford Road side. But when Will Rhodes dropped one in short on the leg side, Slater was irresistibly tempted by the longer boundary, only to find Emilio Gay lying in wait at long leg. His meaty pull could not have picked out the fielder any more accurately, enabling Rhodes to celebrate a debut wicket and end a 95-run stand with McCann.Clarke began with a streaky four off an inside edge but settled quickly and was building another potentially valuable partnership with McCann until a belter of a delivery from Coughlin uprooted his middle stump.McCann, a tall, technically elegant left-hander who scored two centuries in five matches after being promoted to the Championship side towards the end of last season, continued where he left off and after 10 boundaries few would have bet against another hundred until he dabbled with a ball he need not have played outside off stump and was well taken by Robinson, before Ben Raine turned the screw by dismissing Haynes leg before for 30 with the second new ball.

Why Nathan Collins didn't get red card for pulling Bryan Mbeumo for Man Utd penalty explained by Premier League

The Premier League have explained why Nathan Collins was not given his marching orders by referee Craig Pawson in Brentford's 3-1 victory over Manchester United. The Irish defender looked set to be shown a red card when he hauled down Bryan Mbeumo in the penalty area and denied what appeared to be an obvious goalscoring opportunity. However, the Premier League have explained why it was not a red card.

Collins brings down Mbeumo in the box

After 71 minutes, and with United having already pulled back one goal in their quest to overhaul a two-goal deficit, Matheus Cunha slipped Mbeumo through and beyond the Bees' defence. The Cameroonian forward looked set to get onto the end of the ball and fire a shot on goal, but Collins grabbed his opponent and prevented him from reaching the ball. On first viewing, Collins seemed to have denied Mbeumo an obvious goalscoring opportunity, but was only handed a yellow card by the referee and the decision confirmed by VAR.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportThe Premier League offer an explanation

The Premier League offered a justification of the decision on X, posting: "The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Collins deemed to pulled Mbeumo back. VAR also checked the referee’s call of yellow card to Collins – and deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball."

United fans may not be too satisfied with the explanation and debate over whether Pawson and the VAR team made the right decision will no doubt continue in the coming days. Mbeumo did not have control of the ball when he was brought down in the penalty area, but he had seemed likely to reach the ball and fire an effort on goal. The double-jeopardy rule, which states a defender making a genuine attempt to play the ball while fouling an opponent cannot be also given a red card, also does not protect Collins in this situation, given his only intention was to impede the onrushing attacker. The Irish defender can count himself fortunate that the Premier League officials deemed Mbeumo too far from the ball to truly have an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Fernandes falters, Bees buzz

The Red Devils were two goals down after just 20 minutes in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, with Igor Thiago taking advantage of United's leaky defence to fire them ahead. Benjamin Sesko then added his first goal in a United shirt after 26 minutes to give the away side a glimmer of hope that they would get back into the game. Amorim's side continued to push for a leveller and when Mbeumo was brought down, they would have expected to equalise and have enough time to push for a winner. Yet, that would soon prove not to be the case.

The time between the foul and Bruno Fernandes' eventual spot-kick lasted five minutes, with stoppages for VAR checks and Brentford substitutions slowing the game down. United, already feeling aggrieved that they were still up against 11 players, had their frustrations compounded when their skipper's weak penalty was saved by a sprawling Caoimhin Kelleher. The penalty miss added to the dismay at Collins' yellow card, for the foul on Mbeumo ultimately went unpunished by the Red Devils. The Bees were able to see off further United attacks and even added a third, game-sealing goal through Mathias Jensen in the dying moments of the game.

Getty Images SportUnited slip to 12th and remain short of ideas

The win for Brentford meant the Bees leapfrogged Amorim's side into 11th spot at the Red Devils' expense. United's tumultuous start to the Premier League season continues and their hunt to earn back-to-back wins in the league for the first time under their Portuguese coach. In fact, United have failed to win consecutive games in the Premier League since the start of the last season when they beat Fulham on the first game of the season, following a victory against Brighton in the final fixture of the 2023/24 campaign.

The upcoming fixture list does not get any easier for United either with a home game against high-flying Sunderland followed by a trip to league leaders Liverpool. The Red Devils have not beaten the Reds at Anfield since 2016 and have endured their fair share of thrashings in that time, usually at the ruthless hands of Mohamed Salah. Before Amorim can even think about taking on Arne Slot's side though, there is no guarantee they will bounce back against the Black Cats next week, who are above them in the league with a game in hand.

£40m star drops Chelsea transfer hint on Instagram amid Xavi Simons talks

Chelsea are making a serious statement this summer in terms of both incomings and outgoings, with BlueCo sealing some very impressive deals so far and more expected to follow before the transfer deadline on September 1.

Chelsea now pushing to seal £100m double signing with talks ongoing

They’re actively pursuing both men.

To balance out their £277 million expenditure on transfers this summer, Chelsea are poised to bank well over £200 million in sales.

From a PSR standpoint, Enzo Maresca’s side appear to be comfortably sailing above the threshold of a £105 million loss over a rolling three-year period. Their £87.5m winnings from the Club World Cup and qualification for the Champions League, combined with player sales, means Chelsea have very few worries when it comes to PSR compliance, but it is a different story when it comes to UEFA’s FFP rules.

After being fined and charged with breaching FFP last month, Chelsea essentially have to balance out their incomings with outgoings, or risk not being able to register new signings for the Champions League next season.

This is why their player sales are absolutely crucial, and it is why we’ve seen a flurry of exits taking place in the last week.

The departures of Lesley Ugochukwu and Armando Broja to Burnley, combined with Kieran Dewsbury-Hall’s imminent Everton move, will help to make space for the potential signings of RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons and Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnarcho for Manchester United.

Chelsea have been in talks to sign Simons for a while, and they’re apparently making progress alongside their ongoing talks for Garnacho as well.

United may have to sell Garnacho for just £40 million too, with the Red Devils forced to drastically reduce his asking price from £70 million amid their struggles to offload the Argentine.

Alejandro Garnacho makes subtle Chelsea transfer hint on Instagram

While Chelsea and Ruben Amorim’s side negotiate a deal, the player himself has made a subtle hint on Instagram that Stamford Bridge is his preferred destination.

As relayed by journalist Simon Phillips, Garnacho liked a post from Fabrizio Romano linking him with a move to Chelsea – so it appears the 21-year-old may in fact be pretty keen on joining Maresca in the coming weeks.

There is an argument to be made about the lack of professionalism on display here, and whether it could be a bad sign from Chelsea’s perspective about the winger’s attitude, especially after Garnacho’s Old Trafford fallout.

However, according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, Chelsea have conducted extensive background checks into Garnacho’s character and are satisfied by what they’ve found. As the clock ticks towards deadline day, this is definitely one to watch.

After Sesko: Man Utd could forget Baleba by signing "world-class" £42m star

After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, it’s no secret that Manchester United desperately needed to improve their first-team squad during the summer window.

The Red Devils lost 18 out of their 38 league outings last time around, with Ruben Amorim unable to transform the club’s fortunes in England’s top-flight.

However, he’s not the only boss who’s been unable to overturn the situation at Old Trafford, given that the side have now gone over a decade without a league title.

The 40-year-old will hope that his big-money spending, which has seen him splash in the region of £200m, can help him in his quest during his first full year at the helm.

It’s a surprise so much has been invested by the hierarchy, but it was desperately needed, which could see further talents make the move to join the Red Devils this summer.

The latest on United’s hunt for Baleba this summer

Carlos Baleba is another player who has also been linked with a move to join United this summer, with the hierarchy’s attention being turned to the midfield department.

The Cameroonian, who currently plies his trade for Brighton and Hove Albion, has been a leading talent in the Premier League in recent years – featuring 34 times for the Seagulls last season.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler shakes hands with CarlosBaleba

His performances have led to interest from Amorim’s side, but any deal could prove to be a difficult one if his current asking price is to be believed.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side are currently demanding a fee in the region of £100m to sell the 21-year-old this window, with his current employers wanting to keep hold of their star man.

It’s also been reported that the player himself could be keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer, but a deal could be a long shot given his mammoth price tag.

However, the club should be looking past a move for the youngster, potentially turning to another alternative before the closure of the summer window.

Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba

The player who United should try and sign ahead of BalebaIn their attempts to land a new talent in the centre of the park this summer, United have been following a whole host of options to bolster their current ranks.

Morten Hjulmand has been mentioned as a player who could return to feature under Amorim, after previously starring under him during his time at Sporting CP.

Morten Hjulmand for Sporting Lisbon

Javi Guerra is another talent on their radar, with the Valencia youngster allegedly keen on a move to the Theatre of Dreams, given his current side’s financial issues.

However, the club should be stepping up their interest in Douglas Luiz, with the Brazilian a player who they have held talks with over the last couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old could be available to depart Juventus this summer, after making just three starts in Serie A last campaign, following his £42m move from Aston Villa.

He’s already been subject to huge interest from Nottingham Forest and Everton, but no deal has been agreed for his signature, which could see the Red Devils swoop in to land the star.

Juventus'DouglasLuizreacts

His underlying stats are arguably better than fellow target Baleba, offering United an all-round option at the heart of the side, whilst also handing Amorim a more Premier League-proven option.

Luiz, who’s been labelled “world-class” by analyst Adam Gilks, completed more of the passes he attempted, with more of which going into the final third per 90 – which could hand Amorim more of a creative presence from a deeper role.

His all-round ability in and out of possession would massively improve the options at the manager’s disposal in the club’s quest for success during his tenure at the club.

Given his lack of action with the Italian outfit last season, it could make a deal easy to complete, needing to make the move quickly to avoid missing out on his signature.
