Wolves must avoid Trincao this summer

An update has emerged on both Trincao and Adama Traore’s future at Wolves.

What’s the news?

According to a number of reports in Spain, Barcelona will only sign Adama Traore permanently if Wolves sign the Portuguese winger permanently – leading to the La Liga giants’ club president Joan Laporta claiming that a deal could be completed if Trincao is used as a makeweight.

“I think a swap deal with Wolves between Francisco Trincao and Adama Traore could be a very good option,” said Laporta.

Must avoid for Wolves

Wolves’ woes in front of goal have continued on from Nuno Santo’s time in charge of the team, into the Bruno Lage era – having scored the fifth-lowest amount of goals in the Premier League this campaign.

Not helped by Raul Jimenez and Hwang Hee-chan’s total goal haul of 11 for the season so far between them, as well as £36m signing Fabio Silva failing to add any at all in the top flight – Lage will likely be looking to overhaul his attack in the summer – or at least improve it.

With Pedro Neto returning from injury, he can finally replace loanee Trincao as the starting inverted right winger in the team, after the Barcelona-owned youngster has failed to establish himself as a Premier League quality forward since joining last summer.

As a result, signing Trincao permanently next summer would not make much sense with the forward, who was dubbed “toothless” by Nathan Judah, scoring just one goal and assisting only one more in 22 appearances for the West Midlands side.

If they are to have European ambitions, the £19.8m-rated flop is not the player to take them forward and must be axed this summer. There is simply no point in bringing a player who is on £131k per week to the club to play back-up.

Instead, Lage would benefit more from spending the Adama money on other positions in the squad, and promoting one of the exciting young prospects in the academy – like left-footed Canada international Theo Corbeanu.

Horton settles Lancashire for a draw

Lancashire did not make any attempt to chase down 336 from 85 overs on thefinal day of their County Championship Division One match against Essex, instead settling for a draw at Old Trafford

27-May-2010
ScorecardLancashire did not make any attempt to chase down 336 from 85 overs on thefinal day of their County Championship Division One match against Essex, instead settling for a draw at Old Trafford. The home side had been offered the target by Mark Pettini when he declaredEssex’s second innings on 212 for 5 after Ryan ten Doeschate and MatthewWalker both completed half-centuries during the morning session. It was soon obvious from the way opening batsman Luke Sutton set about hisinnings that the Red Rose were happy with six points. Sutton finished with a painstaking 26 off 155 balls, his innings spanning just over three hours.Despite opening bowlers David Masters and Maurice Chambers bowling tightspells, Essex struggled to take wickets as they searched for victory on a deadtrack. Chris Wright had both Paul Horton and Steven Croft caught behind by JamesFoster within three balls in the 66th over but it was too little, too late.Horton top scored for Lancashire with 64 off 179 balls and his side had reached177 for 5 from 83.4 overs when the players shook hands on the draw. Essex, who travel to face Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Saturday, took eight points from the fixture.Masters had given the visitors an early glimmer when he had Stephen Moorecaught behind by Foster for five in the ninth over of Lancashire’s chase. Sutton and Horton then shared a second-wicket partnership of 93 in 40 overs which effectively killed the contest.Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was expected to be a major threat with theball but he only took one wicket for 49 runs from 33 overs. Ten Doeschate claimed Essex’s second wicket in the latter stages of the afternoon when Sutton edged behind to Foster.Lancashire’s reluctance to even attempt to chase down the runs was somewhatsurprising, given their coach Peter Moores had said after day three: “The waythe points are structured this year encourages sides to be aggressive with 16for a win.”Ashwell Prince hit three fours and a six in a brisk 29 before he was caught atshort leg by Billy Godleman off Kaneria and Wright’s double strike meant Essexhad taken three wickets in 10 balls. But Mark Chilton and Glen Chapple batted through to close for Lancashire, whoface Yorkshire at Headingley on Saturday. Simon Kerrigan had earlier claimed the only wicket to fall in Essex’s second innings when Ten Doeschate holed out to Croft at long off for 56 off 57 balls – his second half-century of the match. Essex added 57 runs from 9.4 overs with Walker finishing unbeaten on 53 off 108 balls.

Sky drop ‘huge’ West Brom manager update

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), reporter Rob Dorsett has shared some ‘huge news’ out of West Bromwich Albion involving Steve Bruce.

The Lowdown: Ismael sacked…

After eight months in charge, former Baggies boss Valerien Ismael was given his marching orders, with The Daily Mail claiming that he had lost the faith of West Brom’s playing staff in recent weeks.

His assistant Adam Murray has also departed The Hawthorns as the Championship promotion-chasers now commence their search for Ismael’s replacement.

This comes as West Brom drop off the pace in their battle to secure promotion back to the Premier League, with Sky Sports now sharing ‘huge news’ on the club’s quest for a new manager.

The Latest: Sky drop ‘huge’ Bruce news…

As per the reliable broadcaster, Albion are now in advanced talks to appoint Bruce as their new boss as Dorsett shares ‘huge news’ out of the club on Wednesday evening.

“I can tell you, I’ve been told from senior sources that Steve Bruce is in advanced negotiations with West Bromwich Albion right now to potentially take over as their new head coach,” he explained on live TV.

“I think Albion probably wanted to keep this news quiet, but it’s huge news and it has leaked to me, what huge news that would be if Steve Bruce decided to step back into football management now.”

The Verdict: Right candidate?

While the 61-year-old has averaged a pretty tame 1.36 points per game over his career as a coach, overseeing almost as many losses as victories recorded (Transfermarkt), his record of achieving promotion is one plus point to this potential appointment.

Luke Edwards of The Telegraph highlighted how Bruce has earned more promotions from England’s second tier under his belt than any other manager, adding that it is ‘understandable’ why West Brom are interested (Twitter).

If the Baggies confirm this appointment today, the rest of 2021/22 will certainly be interesting.

Man Utd fans blast Harry Maguire v Burnley

Lots of Manchester United fans were blasting Harry Maguire for his role in the goal for Burnley in the Red Devils’ 3-1 win in the Premier League on Thursday night.

The defender did not engage with Aaron Lennon as he made his way to the edge of the penalty box and then did not put in much of an effort to block the shot, which eventually trickled into the bottom corner past David de Gea.

It was not Maguire’s best game at Old Trafford in general, as he lost out on four of his duels and also failed to record any tackles. Also, he lost possession of the ball 12 times, the seventh-most out of any of his teammates on the pitch (SofaScore).

Emotionally driven: Daren Ganga•Global Cricket Ventures-BCCI

Daren Ganga, the Trinidad & Tobago, believes the fund-raising charity Twenty20 against Guyana in Port of Spain will be an emotional affair for both sides. The match, to be played on January 20, is to aid victims of the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti last week and Ganga expected a full house at the Queen’s Park Oval.”My team-mates and I were saddened and overwhelmed by the enormity of the disaster that has befallen the people of Haiti from the awesome earthquake,” he said. “We needed no persuasion to play in the charity match for our suffering and unfortunate CARICOM (Caribbean community) brothers and sisters.”Ganga believed T&T’s success at the inaugural Champions League Twenty20, where their stunning run to the final not only won Indian hearts but also brought alive the tournament, would similarly bring the crowds to their feet in the upcoming match.Guyana’s captain, Sewnarine Chattergoon, was equally sentimental when asked about the disastrous situation in Haiti and his team’s decision to take part in the fund-raising event. “The Guyana Cricket Board, the team management and us the players acknowledge unhesitatingly how critical it is to show solidarity and support for our fellow Caribbean families in their moment of need and desperation,” he said. The International Red Cross estimates that about three million people were affected by the earthquake, which devastated the capital Port-au-Prince and caused an estimated 45,000-50,000 deaths. The two teams to be involved in the charity match are currently playing each other in a historic first-class four-day game at the Sir Vivian Richards Ground in Antigua.T&T squad: Daren Ganga (capt), Lendl Simmons, William Perkins, Jason Mohammed, Imran Khan, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Samuel Badree, Sherwin Ganga, Dave Mohammed, Ravi Rampaul, Navin Stewart, Daron Cruickshank, Rayad Emrit, Richard Kelly.Guyana: Sewnarine Chattergoon (capt), Travis Dowlin, Assad Fudadin, Rajindra Chandrika, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Vishaul Singh, Esuan Crandon, Veersammy Permaul, Derwin Christian, Devendra Bishoo, Brendon Bess, Trevor Benn.

Liverpool fans love Harvey Elliott latest

A number of Liverpool supporters have responded positively to James Pearce’s claim that Harvey Elliott is closing in on a return from injury.

The 18-year-old has been absent since the middle of September after he suffered a dislocated ankle in the 3-0 win away to Leeds United.

It was a cruel blow for Elliott, who had begun the season in hugely impressive form, starting three Premier League matches and not looking remotely out of his depth.

While there were initial fears that the midfielder could be out for the entire season, he has been making remarkable progress in his recovery from that setback.

According to The Athletic’s Pearce [via Anfield Edition on Twitter], Elliott is expected to return to full training next month, assuming everything goes to plan.

Scotland plan three-day domestic matches

Scotland are planning a ‘first-class structure’ to their domestic competitions in a bid to improve their cricketing infrastructure and boost their chances of gaining Test status. Last week, Cricket Scotland officials announced their plans to organize a new regional tournament, featuring the country’s elite players, with three teams from the three main geographical centres playing regular three-day matches.”In effect what we are planning is a first class tier of competition although it would not have that status,” Andy Tennant, Cricket Scotland’s head of performance, was quoted as saying in the . “The ICC are keen to ensure that their associate members have a solid infrastructure in place on and off the park and we are always trying to improve.”Tennant admitted Scotland were competing with Ireland, regarded as the leading associate nation at this point. Ireland have already voiced their interest in gaining Test status amid calls to incorporate more teams into the circuit, or reform the format by creating a tier system. “We are constantly jockeying for position with the other associate countries and Ireland probably are in pole position having been successful for the last year or two,” Tennant said. “However, there are other ways you can set yourself up for sustained success and we believe a three-day competition will greatly enhance our infrastructure.”Scotland failed to qualify for the 2011 World Cup, though they still retain their ODI status. Tennant also believed the establishment of an equivalent for first-class cricket at the associate level could help secure the futures of many of the country’s cricketers by filling a “black hole” at the senior level.”This competition will provide a necessary stepping-stone from club cricket to senior representative level. It will also provide a safety net for players who previously might have slipped off our radar,” he said. “There has always been a bit of a black hole where players who played for our U19s have disappeared from the scene because they weren’t ready to step up to senior level. Now they will be kept involved and given the necessary back-up to ensure they reach their full potential.”

Aamer's career hampered by stress fractures – Nazar

Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has revealed that three stress fractures to the back nearly derailed Mohammad Aamer’s career even before it started

Mudassar Nazar: “He has always had the knack of digesting information from coaches and from what I have seen, he is a very quick learner”•AFP

Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has called Mohammad Aamer a diamond of Pakistan cricket while revealing how three stress fractures of the back almost derailed his career even before it started. Aamer, the teenage left-arm fast bowler who impressed in the ICC World Twenty20 in England and on the tour of Sri Lanka, was a student at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where Nazar served as director till last November.Nazar said he spotted Aamer as a 14-year-old at an academy in Rawalpindi and was instantly impressed with his abilities as a quick bowler. He summoned Aamer to the NCA where he developed his talent before heading to England with the Under-19 squad in 2007. He bowled nearly 70 overs and took six wickets in the two unofficial Tests. But Aamer had to return early due to a back injury and it later came to light that it was far more serious than anyone had imagined.”When we analysed Aamer at the NCA upon his return to Pakistan, it came to light that he was suffering from three stress fractures to his back,” Nazar told . “Two of the fractures had been present since the age of 11 or 12, and the third was suffered in England on the U-19 tour.”The earlier fractures were probably as a result of playing cricket at a young age, perhaps street cricket or tape ball cricket and Aamer was probably not even aware of the fact that he was suffering from the fractures. The third fracture was as a result of being overbowled on the Under 19 tour of England, when Imad Wasim was his skipper. To be fair to Imad, he had no idea of the injury and he was just a very young lad himself given the job of being skipper.”More damaging than being overbowled, Nazar said, was the fact that the Pakistan Cricket Board didn’t take enough precautions to protect its players from injury.”There was no physio with the U-19 squad that went to England, which was a huge mistake by the PCB and Aamer’s career could have been ended before it even started due to this oversight by the PCB,” Nazar said. “Aamer came back to Pakistan after the tour and was complaining of stiffness. When he was examined, the stress fractures came to light. Aamer lost one year of his development due to the back injury and it took a lot of hard work on his part and from NCA staff to get him fit again.”He added that Aamer’s suffered another jolt when he was sent to Malaysia for the U-19 World Cup last year when he wasn’t fully fit. Aamer’s first-class career really took off in his debut season, where he took 55 wickets for National Bank of Pakistan.”I also recall when he was selected for the U-19 World Cup, I told the selectors not to send him and to instead let us work with him at the academy,” Nazar said. “However my instructions were ignored and luckily in my opinion Aamer came back early from that tour due to a fever.”Nazar added that himself and other coaches have been very impressed with Aamer’s attitude.”On that tour of England, Bob Willis (former England fast bowler) said that he could see something special in Mohammad Aamer and that he was a very fine prospect,” Nazar said. “A lot of the media and former cricketers could see that Aamer was by far the best bowler on either side and he already knew the ropes regarding pace bowling. He has always had the knack of digesting information from coaches and from what I have seen he is a very quick learner.”
