West Ham fans upset with club’s Payet anniversary tweet

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have been left heartbroken over a tweet from the club commemorating the signing of Dimitri Payet from Marseille.

The playmaker emerged as a genuine star during his time at the Irons, spending two years in east London between 2015 and 2017.

However, he departed in acrimonious circumstances, forcing a return to the Ligue 1 club and actually going on strike as he looked to leave the Hammers.

The 32-year-old nevertheless has a remarkable highlight reel from his Irons tenure, scoring a number of spectacular free-kicks and laying on some genuinely exceptional assists, while also embarking on several mazy, almost ridiculous runs through opposition defences.

He scored a total of 15 goals in 60 games while registering 23 assists prior to his exit.

And supporters have asked the club why exactly they would choose to commemorate such a painful anniversary on social media.

Take a look at the best of the reaction on Twitter below!

Liverpool: Junior Firpo would sure be a statement

Liverpool set to meet £45million asking price of impressive La Liga full-back Junior Firpo, as per Spanish outlet Sport.

According to reports, the Reds have identified Real Betis defender Junior Firpo as a possible replacement for the outbound Alberto Moreno, who is set to officially leave the club at the end of the month.

Obviously, this leaves Liverpool short on cover on the left flank, with just Andrew Robertson the only out-and-out left-back in the squad as it stands, so there is certainly scope for a new arrival.

The Spanish under-21 international, who is currently representing his country in the European Championships, apparently drew a number of admirers in La Liga last season and would set Liverpool back substantially more than the £10million it took to secure Robertson’s signature from Hull City back in 2017.

Whether Klopp is willing to part with the necessary £45million it would take to sign what will essentially be a back-up to Robertson remains to be seen. However, the German recently shed a little light on the subject by explaining that he has a budget at Liverpool (as demonstrated by last year’s transfer extravaganza which saw the German break the club record twice) and he’s not afraid to use it.

“Liverpool is an ambitious club and if we didn’t spend the same amount of money as others, we wouldn’t be able to compete,” Klopp told German broadcaster ZDF (via the Mirror).

“Everybody’s splashing the cash, so we have to do the same.”

According to the analysts over at La Liga Analysis, Firpo has characteristics which they’d liken to the great Roberto Carlos –  a man known for his dynamic ability to both attack and defend.

At just 22-years-old, as well, and already drawing attention from some of the biggest clubs in Europe (Madrid and Manchester United were recently rumoured to be interested in him) it’s abundantly clear that whoever grabs this up-and-coming youngster will have a real player for years to come.

Already champions of Europe, signing Firpo would be a major power play.

Liverpool fans, do you think there’s any chance that anyone will be able to dethrone Robertson? Is it wise to spend so much on a back-up? Let us know in the comments below…

West Brom and Bilic can triumph if they mould a new identity

[ad_pod ]

For West Bromwich Albion, now represents a new dawn. There is a fresh sense of optimism ahead of a Championship season in which they will be hoping to achieve promotion.

Yet, under the beady eyes of Slaven Bilic, they may arguably have a better chance than they did last term. After all, he spoke a good game in his first press conference since arriving at the club this week.

What attracted the Croatian to the Hawthorns was the thrill of working in the Championship, a league he is yet to experience.

The 50-year-old has managed his national team at major tournaments and also taken West Ham to their highest ever points tally in the Premier League.

However, it appears as though he’s now relishing the opportunity to get stuck into England’s second tier as he takes a step down.

The Championship is arguably one of the hardest to get out of. It’s one of the most competitive leagues in the world and finishing at the top of the tree is no easy task.

That’s why it was rather remarkable that both Norwich and Sheffield United were able to achieve promotion in 2018/19.

The pair of them will compete in the top-flight next season but West Brom, on the other hand, will not.

To put things into context, Albion’s squad came to a value of £86.81m last term per Transfermarkt. In comparison, Sheffield United’s was a tiny £29.66m whilst Norwich’s was £56.07m.

On that evidence, the fact that the former didn’t go up is near baffling.

There were many reasons to explain why West Brom didn’t. Not replacing Harvey Barnes in January and then not employing a new permanent manager after sacking Darren Moore are two of the most obvious.

But on the face of it, the Baggies simply weren’t good enough. Their inability to get over the line against Aston Villa despite dominating their play-off semi-final second leg told the story.

So, after finally appointing a new boss after three arduous months of searching, West Brom need a new direction. With the club looking to cut back this summer, they’ll need to take a leaf out of the two sides who finished first and second in 2018/19.

The Blades and the Canaries showed last season that you don’t need players on huge wages to succeed. Instead, you need a philosophy and a vision. This is the one key change West Brom must now put into action.

Whether Bilic can instil that is difficult to assess. At West Ham he was incredibly impressive in his first term but things rather hit the rails afterwards.

The Croat is a steely character and it may well be someone like him who can guide West Brom back to the Premier League. The fact he has more experience than Moore and Shan will undoubtedly help.

Embedded within Chris Wilder’s side, though, is a distinct way of playing. Sheffield United were brave in their attacking approach whilst their never say die attitude was easy to admire.

The progressive Daniel Farke, who has now been at Norwich for two years, has shown similar strides and he’s implemented his vision to perfection. Under the German, they look a far more cultured outfit than they did when bouncing between the first and second tiers in recent years.

After Bilic’s unveiling, Dowling told the press: “We had seven loan players last season that need to be replaced. We will have a kitty to spend, if we lose one or two, we’ll have more to. With Slaven here, we don’t have to spend it all. We want to unearth gems again.”

And that is indicative of the rebuild that must take place at West Brom this summer. Bilic looks as though he’ll head up the recruitment but initiating his style and his way of playing will also be hugely important.

At West Ham, there wasn’t a great sense that he was able to do that. Money was spent here and there on the likes of Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini but there wasn’t a recognisable direction.

He added greater attacking players, but the core of the team were those he inherited.

Albion showed last season that they struggled to compete even with their players on high wages so it’ll be intriguing to see whether a new approach can take them further.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

Taking a look at how Sheffield United and Norwich went about things last season must be used as guidance for the Baggies.

That doesn’t just count for their transfer activity, but it should also be a focus in terms of the way they approach matters on the pitch.

Their problems from last season aren’t going to disappear overnight, but by instilling a new way of doing things, it’ll certainly help.

This is a chance for everyone at the club to undo the wrongs of the past year. For the sake of West Brom’s long term future, can they afford another term in the Championship after this? Arguably not.

But that appears to be why they’ve appointed a man as passionate about the game as Bilic. If he can turn the tide next season he will have done a fantastic job.

However, only time will tell whether he can engulf the club with his own philosophy. Based on his time at West Ham, you have to doubt whether he’ll be able to improve things in that regard.

Transfer Focus: Joe Aribo pursuit puts Olivier Ntcham’s future at Celtic in doubt

[ad_pod ]

Neil Lennon is set to ramp up his interest in Charlton Atheltic’s Joe Aribo after he is confirmed as Celtic’s next manager, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Lennon was offered the job by the club in the wake of last Saturday’s superb Scottish Cup win over Hearts but has since taken a short holiday break, so the details have not yet been thrashed out on his appointment.

The paper say that he is set to be confirmed as manager on Friday though and after that he won’t be wasting time in signing players up this summer.

Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo is high up on his list of targets, states the report, with the 22-year-old available on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract at the recently promoted English club.

The Sun reckon Lennon has had him repeatedly scouted since taking over from Brendan Rodgers in February.

Keith from C’mon the Hoops throws back to player who was both a Hoop by name and by nature in the video below…

Can Aribo make the step up?

A central midfielder with presence, poise and attacking ambition, Aribo has the attributes to be a success in the Scottish Premiership and it’s no surprise he is being linked with bigger clubs this summer after a stand-out season at Charlton.

He starred in the Addicks’ promotion campaign which saw them rise into the English Championship through the play-offs, scoring 10 goals and assisting 5 times in 39 appearances.

Celtic are currently well-stocked in central midfield, but the chance to sign an athletic talent like Aribo on the cheap is understandably appealing and clearly Lennon is a fan of the player having had him regularly scouted.

Ntcham replacement?

With reports on Friday from The Daily Record suggesting French midfielder Olivier Ntcham could be heading to Ligue 1 for decent money, the capture of Aribo could spell the end of the former Man City man’s time at Celtic Park.

Recouping a fee for Ntcham, as classy a player as he is, and replacing his presence with Aribo sounds like smart business.

The core of Celtic’s Scottish midfield would remain intact, while ensuring that Lennon has a different, more attacking option if needed, with Aribo providing direct competition for Tom Rogic.

Clueless Man United fans take to Twitter in anger at rumours of Rojo exit

Manchester United fans getting hung up on the exit of a player like Marcos Rojo is a damning indictment on the way the club has taken a turn for the worst in the last few years. According to The Mirror, the Argentine liability is being allowed to leave for just £6 million this summer after five years at Old Trafford, but the fans aren’t happy.

Marcos Rojo conned his way into Manchester United. He was one of the typical World Cup performers in the 2014 tournament who did enough in his short seven games as Argentina reached the final to convince the world he was worth a big move. Now, five years on, we know exactly what sort of player Rojo is, and it’s hard to imagine there’s a club out there who would pay more than £6 million for him.

The Old Trafford faithful, though, simply cannot wrap their heads around the fact that Rojo is useless. What’s the point of having a liability of a defender in reserve when his rashness has so often cost the Red Devils. If Rojo had received even half the red cards he’s deserved for leg-breaking challenges then the fans may have different views, but in any case, getting rid of him and bringing in £6 million should be seen as a brilliant move, not a bad one.

You can read the clueless United fans’ thoughts here:

The United fans who are calling Rojo’s price tag a ‘disrespect’ need to wake up. The Argentine is useless and shipping him off for any price is good business.

The Chalkboard: Why Yoshinori Muto should replace Miguel Almiron

[ad_pod ]

News emerged yesterday that Newcastle United’s record signing is to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

On the chalkboard

This brings an end to the Paraguayan’s first season in England. Although he did not manage a single goal or assist, his pace in behind has completely transformed the Magpies’ attack.

Ayoze Perez has scored seven goals since Almiron joined, before that he only had three in the league,  as the speed and directness of the 25-year-old has allowed Perez and Salomon Rondon to have more space to work with, which they have exploited to great effect.

Sitting on 41 points and with Premier League safety secured for another season, Almiron’s injury is not the end of the world as it will now allow one of their summer signings to get some game time.

Perfect for Muto

Muto was signed from Mainz in a £9.5 million deal but he has found game time very hard to come by in the second-half of the season since the arrival of Almiron – he has only made 14 appearances for the Magpies so far.

He was not helped by the fact he was called up to the Asian Cup squad and thus missed December and January, before this he played in the Newcastle team that did not win in any of their first ten matches but was arguably the Magpies’ best player in that spell.

He scored a goal at Old Trafford in a 3-2 defeat  whilst he also looked busy and creative with pace and a willingness to run in behind in all of his early season performances.

Now that Almiron is out for the season, Perez and Rondon need that player who can make runs beyond the defence and create space for their partnership to blossom.

Muto would be a perfect replacement for Newcastle’s last games – they take on Brighton and Fulham with Liverpool sandwiched in-between.

The games against a relegated team and one battling relegation would probably be the best time to use the 26-year old, his pace and work-ethic would certainly trouble both defences.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

For Mainz Muto scored 27 in 72 appearances whilst his Japanese record is three goals in 29 games.

This suggests that Muto will be a success on Tyneside, he has had a disrupted season with injury and Asian Cup duties coupled with the arrival of Almiron, resulting in limited appearances, but these last few games should give the Japanese international a chance to impress the Toon faithful.

Celtic fans reflect on 2003 UEFA Cup heartbreak

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Celtic fans have been reacting to a picture of Henrik Larsson on Twitter, as they reminisce about the 2003 UEFA Cup heartbreak.

Celtic are well on pace to secure a treble for the third year running this season, facing Hearts in the Scottish Cup final and needing just a few more wins to close out their eighth consecutive title.

Yet while domestic dominance has increased in recent years, the Bhoys’ European ventures have gotten worse, epitomised by their shocking exit this season.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

The Hoops were dumped out of the Champions League by AEK Athens after an insipid performance, and fans are now looking back at a time where they were a serious European force.

The 2003 UEFA Cup final in Seville saw Porto beat the Bhoys 3-2 despite Larsson scoring twice, and Celtic Bible have shared a quote from the legendary Swede that reads: “I would have swapped a lot of what I achieved for Celtic just to win in Seville.”

The image accompanying the quote shows the goalscoring machine walking past the cup in agony, and it’s sent fans on Twitter right back to the heartbreak of that night.

Tottenham keen on Thomas Strakosha

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be jubilant with how things are going within the Champions League after they booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, although there will be question marks over their ability to win silverware as a whole.

Spurs were dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, they were just penalty kicks away from a League Cup final and have seen their title race for the Premier League fall flat after a couple of disappointing results.

Mauricio Pochettino has been adamant things will change for this side in the future and it appears he is looking ahead with one of his potential transfer targets this summer.

What’s the news?

According to a report by Calciomercato, Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha has been identified by Tottenham as a possible long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

The 23-year-old Albania international has been a standout for the Serie A side this season and appears to be emerging as one of Europe’s most promising goalkeepers.

The Verdict:

There is no doubt Lloris has been a huge servant for Tottenham during his time in north London, however, the France international shot-stopper has drawn criticism for his performances recently and has not helped his side’s chances of obtaining silverware.

If his displays were disregarded, it must also be remembered that the World Cup winner is 32-years-old now, so it makes perfect sense for Spurs to look at their options and consider someone for the long-term future of the club.

Strakosha could be an excellent replacement as he has shown that he is capable of playing at a top-level, as he has helped Lazio to an impressive Champions League campaign, as well as having conceded just 27 goals in his 26 Serie A appearances.

However, the Italian outfit are unlikely to be willing to let him go unless they receive a large fee for the 23-year-old, but they could also be prepared to offer him a new deal to stay in Rome.

Tottenham fans, do you believe Strakosha is the ideal long-term replacement for Lloris? Join in with the discussion by letting us know your thoughts below.
