Liverpool receive Ismaila Sarr boost

Liverpool have received a boost in their pursuit of Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, with manager Jurgen Klopp keen to bolster the club’s forward line.

What’s the story?

The Reds have been linked with the highly-rated 23-year-old throughout the summer after first being credited with an interest 12 months ago.

However, a move to Merseyside now looks more likely than ever for Sarr after the 34-cap Senegal international reportedly informed his current club that he wants to leave, according to TransferMarketWeb (via The Express).

The report states that Liverpool are preparing a £40m bid to secure the youngster’s services, who has also been on Manchester United’s radar.

Any move for Sarr is likely to hinge on the futures of unwanted pair Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri, though. The duo are edging towards an Anfield exit, and Klopp may need to proceeds of their sales to fund a move for the Watford ace.

Jurgen Klopp needs him

During his single campaign in the Premier League back in 2019/20, Sarr bagged five goals and provided six assists in 28 appearances, earning praise from the likes of Gary Neville, who labelled him “special” following a scintillating performance against West Ham United.

The Sky Sports pundit went on to praise the flying forward further, praising his natural assets, intelligence with the ball at his feet and decision making.

“He’s a big, big talent, honestly he really is,” the former Manchester United full-back said.

On what makes Sarr so good, Neville continued: ‘I always think, particularly as a wide player, what would I have not wanted to have played against? The first thing is pace.

“And then you’ve got to think about, can he use his pace? Well, yes, he can, because he makes really good quality runs: the spin in behind, straight, but also the run inside in between full-back and centre-back – which I always think is the most difficult to mark.”

With Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino struggling to hit top form last season and Origi and Shaqiri not up to the required standard, Klopp needs another quality addition in the final third.

The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea have a plethora of options at the top end of the pitch, and if Liverpool are going to beat them to the Premier League title, their German tactician will require greater strength in depth.

And, in other news…Liverpool tipped to make a move for £117m-rated “phenomenon”, Klopp would love him

Southampton linked with Tosin Adarabioyo

Southampton’s search for a Jannik Vestergaard replacement is hotting up, with Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo the latest name to be linked with a move to St Mary’s.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Express, Southampton have joined Norwich City in the race to sign the 23-year-old defender, who was a prominent part of Scott Parker’s side last season as Fulham were relegated back to the Championship.

Although the report claims that the former Manchester City man has a £10m release clause in his contract at Fulham following their relegation, contrasting reports suggest that this clause has now expired, which suggests that Southampton may have to pay more than that if they want to prise him away from the West London side.

Would Adarabioyo be a good signing?

Despite Fulham’s less than impressive return in the Premier League last season, Adarabioyo showcased his ability in the top flight and was one of the better performers for the Craven Cottage outfit. He averaged a solid 6.73 rating from WhoScored across the season, which ranked him as the sixth-best player to make at least 10 starts.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has suggested that Southampton will target young players who will cost around the £10m mark this summer, and given that the defender is currently valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, he certainly seems to fit the bill.

During a loan spell with Blackburn Rovers, teammate Darragh Lenihan was full of praise for Adarabioyo, saying: “He’s brilliant. His distribution is excellent, he’s quick, he’s big, he has all the attributes. I’ve said to him that he has all the attributes to play for Manchester City in my opinion. He’s here to learn, and help us out, but he’s a fantastic player.”

The centre-back can offer Hasenhuttl Premier League experience but also has a lot of scope to improve at the age of 23, which seems like exactly the sort of signing the Austrian needs in his current squad.

Therefore, Martin Semmens should definitely consider bringing Adarabioyo to St Mary’s this summer.

Exclusive: Spurs legend insists midfielder has downed tools

Graham Roberts insists that Harry Winks has simply downed tools at Tottenham Hotspur.

The £50,000-a-week midfielder endured a torturous evening last week as Spurs lost 1-0 to Pacos de Ferreira in a Europa Conference League qualifier.

Winks was one of the senior players in an inexperienced starting XI for Spurs but he conceded possession in the build-up to the winner, and failed to inspire a comeback.

Winks was left on the bench in the win over Manchester City on the opening weekend and played a single minute in the 1-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux, as he came on as a late substitute.

Roberts believes that he is keen to leave the club, with various sides reported to hold an interest in signing him, including Everton, although he fears he may well decide to see out his lengthy contract at the club, which is due to expire in 2024.

Speaking exclusively to Football Fancast, he said: “He looks like he’s downed tools, he wants to get away, and then he comes out and says he doesn’t want to leave. He’s going to see his contract out.

“Well, that’s what Danny Rose said so just get on and play the best you can and you might get back in the team.”

van Jaarsveld keeps Kent afloat

Yorkshire 85 for 2 (McGrath 23*, Rudolph 28*) trail Kent 227 (van Jaarsveld 107) by 142 runs
ScorecardDespite an heroic innings from Martin van Jaarsveld, he of the high backlift and stylish cover drive, Yorkshire had the better of the opening day of the Scarborough Festival. Their seam attack overwhelmed most of the Kent batsmen in the first two sessions and, despite losing their openers cheaply, they were batting solidly again by the close of play.Michael Vaughan returned to the Yorkshire team for this match, slotted in as Andrew Gale’s opening partner. He was not called on to fulfil this role for a few hours, though, as the Yorkshire captain Darren Gough won the toss in front of a crowd exceeding 2,000 and put Kent in to bat on a pitch with a greenish tinge, still containing considerable moisture.Yorkshire was depending on their (on paper) strong seam bowling attack, even in the absence of Tim Bresnan, on England duty. The seamers found some swing and seam movement, though not excessive, right from the start. In the second over Joe Denly, with 5 to his credit, edged a difficult low chance off Deon Kruis to the left of Anthony McGrath at second slip, which went down, and Yorkshire were made to pay for this lapse; moments later, Denly edged Matthew Hoggard just over third slip to the boundary. Hoggard was moving the ball dangerously away from the bat, but the Kent batsmen kept the runs coming, some off the edge, as if afraid that their stay might not be long.Sure enough, Rob Key was the first man to go, nudging a catch to the keeper off Kruis for 7, and was soon followed by a hesitant Neil Dexter (4), who edged the same bowler low to McGrath at second slip; 36 for 2. While van Jaarsveld settled in, Denly continued to go for his strokes, cutting Rana Naved for four to reach 50 off 61 balls, out of 77 for 2. But he got no further, beaten and lbw to Gough who moved the ball in to him off the pitch. He had been dropped again on 45 and got away with some flashy strokes, but in the context of Kent’s innings it was a valuable one.The rest of the innings belonged to van Jaarsveld, as not another batsman reached double figures. Naved was a weak link in the seam attack, bowling generally too short, and Yorkshire must at this stage be disappointed with their new acquisition after his return from lengthy injuries. But he did put one ball in the right place, getting one to move away and lift on Darren Stevens (1), who edged to McGrath in the slips. Apart from this, the Pakistani Test player conceded 53 runs in nine overs. After lunch, Kent suffered further losses, with Geraint Jones caught behind from an indeterminate shot for 8, and Ryan McLaren run out without scoring, attempting an unlikely single to Adam Lyth in the covers, who scored a direct hit. But, at 108 for 6, van Jaarsveld now decided it was time he took charge. A poor over from Naved helped him to his fifty, off 86 balls, and then he welcomed Adil Rashid with a six into the pavilion over long-off and, next ball, drove him straight for a magnificent four. In the same over, James Tredcroft was dropped by Hoggard at mid-on, but then gave Gough another lbw decision, moving across his stumps and out for 9, having added 57 with van Jaarsveld.Yorkshire could not keep the South African quiet; his partners did little more than hang around rather briefly while he fought his lone battle in fine style. He flicked Hoggard for six over midwicket with the greatest of ease, and then pulled a long hop from Rashid for four to reach his century off 133 balls. He was last out, an lbw victim to the deceptively innocuous-looking medium-pace of McGrath, for 107 off 139 balls, with 15 fours and two sixes. His ten team-mates scored just 95 between them. There were two wickets each for Hoggard, Kruis and Gough.Kent were all out at tea for 227, but only when Yorkshire had batted on this pitch would it be possible to make a true assessment of that total. It was no picnic for the Yorkshire openers, either, with Amjad Khan in particular continually beating Gale outside the off stump. Vaughan on 1 gloved a ball down the leg side, and the wicketkeeper Jones just failed to reach a flying catch, the ball going for four; it could not be recorded so much as a miss as a narrow escape for the batsman. But Vaughan never settled in, and on 10 he chased a wide ball from Robbie Joseph, with little foot movement, and Jones took the catch in front of first slip, scarcely a stroke worthy of the former England captain.Joseph, although inconsistent, struck again with the total at 37, trapping Gale flat-footed on the crease with an inswinger that kept slightly low, also for 10. McGrath dug in, but Jacques Rudolph batted fluently from the start. Kent had a chance of breaking through when McGrath, on 22, was dropped in the slips off McLaren, and so the pair survived to the close. Yorkshire statistically finished the day in a satisfactory position, with the local experts predicting a superb batting pitch on the second day – but the home side would do well not to count their chickens.

Forest dealt Lee Buchanan transfer blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Lee Buchanan to the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that Nottingham Forest’s move for the Derby County left-back is thought to have stalled.

It was reported that Chris Hughton’s side had made two offers for the defender, with the first bid rejected due to it being below the Rams’ asking price, while a second improved offer was knocked back due to Derby’s unwillingness to sell to their local rivals.

This appears to have been a knockout blow for Forest, as, in response to a fan asking for an update on the situation of Buchanan, Nixon said: “Don’t think Forest anymore. So that one has stalled.”

Murphy will be fuming

Considering the fact that Derby are in the midst of quite a severe financial crisis, the fact that the Rams have held firm on their stance regarding the sale of the highly-rated defender is sure to have left CEO Dane Murphy fuming.

Indeed, with Forest currently lacking depth at left-back, as Hughton has informed Gaetan Bong that he is free to leave the club this summer after already allowing Yuri Ribeiro to leave on a free transfer, a signing in the position would appear to be a priority for the Reds ahead of their upcoming Championship campaign.

Considering how much potential the £2.25m-rated Buchanan seems to possess, having provided three assists and created four big chances over his 35 Championship appearances last season – as well as Wayne Rooney claiming that the 20-year-old is “one of the best young left-backs in the country” – missing out on his signing is undoubtedly a major blow for the club.

However, with it appearing as if the Garibaldi’s pursuit of the England under-21 international has reached a dead end, Murphy will now have to turn his attention in the summer transfer market elsewhere.

Journalist tips Wolves to start a bidding war for Ruben Neves

Wolves will want a bidding war for Ruben Neves this summer, journalist Luke Hatfield has told The Transfer Tavern.

According to The Athletic, Wolves will have to sell an asset like Neves this transfer window if they want to spend big and Arsenal is a possible destination.

The north London club face serious competition, though, with talkSPORT claiming Manchester United are also interested in signing the 24-year-old midfielder.

In fact, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook claims United are actually leading the race for Neves’ signature in a blow to Arsenal but boost to Wolves, who will be hoping to spark a bidding war, according to Hatfield.

“They will want a bidding war,” the Express & Star reporter said. “You always want a couple of interested parties because you can drive up that price tag.

“I think for Wolves, they’re probably very calm about the whole subject. It’s not an issue of we need to get the guy out I don’t think. It’s very much an issue of if the right money comes in, then it’s one we’ll seriously consider because we can reinvest that money elsewhere.”

While Arsenal did look to be frontrunners to sign Neves, the Portugal international has been linked with United in the past, so it would not be a surprise if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did try to sign him before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool unlikely to sign Renato Sanches

Liverpool are unlikely to sign Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update from Paul Gorst.

The Lowdown: Liverpool linked with Sanches move

Gini Wijnaldum’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain has heightened the need for a new midfielder to join the Reds this summer, and Sanches has been linked with a move to Anfield.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an excellent Euro 2020 campaign with Portugal prior to their round of 16 exit, and he also won the Ligue 1 title with Lille last season.

The Latest: Journalist plays down interest

Although Sanches would appear to be an exciting option, the Liverpool Echo’s Gorst has poured cold water on the claims, saying that it is a move which is unlikely to materialise. He outlined:

“With Sanches, the issue would be that he is a player who would come in on wages that would not fall in line with where his place would be within the squad.

“Would he be ahead of Keita? There is an argument to say yes, but those who love Keita would say not.

“So that means Sanches would be a tough one to bring in, and I think if they are looking at midfield options, it might be elsewhere.”

The Verdict: Look for alternatives

Sanches has already played for the likes of Bayern Munich in his career and won the European Championship in 2016, while he has been hailed as ‘incredible’ by Kevin Campbell.

However, there are potential downsides to signing him, not least his injury history. Also, as Gorst outlined, his wages in comparison to the current Liverpool squad indicate that he may not be a guaranteed starter – Sanches takes home £51,000 per week, less than half of what Reds midfielders Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Thiago, Naby Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain earn.

While the Portuguese may have been an eye-catching addition to the squad, it looks as though Jurgen Klopp will need to focus on an alternative option in the middle of the park.

Liverpool simply must sign another midfielder in the coming weeks – not making an addition would be a huge risk, considering that Henderson and Thiago are in their 30s, not to mention Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain being injury-prone.
