England make it two in a row to take third from India

England gave themselves a much-needed boost before heading to Australia to participate in the Ashes series when beating India by 90 runs to take third place in the World Series of Women’s Cricket at Bert Sutcliffe Oval at Lincoln University today

Lynn McConnell25-Dec-2009England gave themselves a much-needed boost before heading to Australia to participate in the Ashes series when beating India by 90 runs to take third place in the World Series of Women’s Cricket at Bert Sutcliffe Oval at Lincoln University today. The final between Australia and New Zealand will be played on the same ground tomorrow. It was a win based around a fine innings of 80 played by opener Kathryn Leng, her highest in One-Day Internationals. Her previous best were two scores of 46, one in the 2000 World Cup against South Africa and last summer in England against India. Her 50 took 82 balls and when she was out, bowled when playing the ball onto her stumps, she had scored 80 off 109 balls.Leng looked to attack as often as possible during her innings which was a refreshing sight from an England side that had largely under-performed until the last two games of the tournament. She shared an opening stand of 35 with Sarah Collyer and a second-wicket stand of 65 with Charlotte Edwards, who was out for 21 after suffering an injury in the latter stages of her innings.England could have really shut the gate on India, but their middle and lower-order batting folded badly and they lost their last seven wickets for 39 runs in 66 balls. India’s left-arm spinner Neetu David was outstanding and took three for 42 from her 10 overs. Nooshin Al Khadeer took two for 32 from her 10 while Jhulan Goswami took two for 24.Given the fact that India had been on the receiving end of the dramatic last ball, one-run loss to England yesterday, it was going to take a mighty effort to score the 192 they were set to win. That cause was not helped when Sunetra Paranjpe was trapped leg before wicket from the third ball of the innings by Lucy Pearson. Mithali Raj was India’s biggest hope and she started in typically dashing style but she was the fourth batsman dismissed when the score was only 55, and that made the job very difficult for the rest of the side.A player capable of taking the attack to all the sides in the world, she was unstuck by Laura Harper and bowled for 26 off 45 balls. Earlier, Jaya Sharma, who had played some memorable straight drives based on the quality of her timing more than any power associated with the shot, scored 16 and Anjum Chopra, another key wicket, was leg before wicket to Clare Connor. The England captain’s left-arm slow bowling resulted in her having the second best bowling performance of her career as she finished with three wickets for 16 runs. Her loyal ally through the middle stages of the innings was Collyer, who at one stage was on target for the fewest runs off a bowler in ODIs but some lusty lower order hitting denied her of that and she had to be happy with four for nine off 9.5 overs.Chopra was very disappointed with the two losses to England at the end of the tournament and said her side had difficulty with the way umpiring decisions throughout the tournament had tended to go against her side across the gamut of decision-making, leg before wicket, stumpings and run outs. She was still upset about a stumping decision given against Raj at a vital stage of the game against New Zealand and she was also disappointed in some of the run out decisions in the first loss to England. But overall she said the side’s batting had let them down. She said the tournament had been very valuable in giving exposure to international play for India’s younger players. They had played against the world’s best and it had given them a good platform to improve their game.”The tournament is a good idea. We don’t play many international games. At least teams like Australia and New Zealand can play each other,” she said.England captain Connor said the last two games had been much more like the real England. She said her side was guilty of playing well only in patches for 20 minutes to half an hour when they needed to be able to perform for much longer.”Yesterday’s game was a thriller, the sort of game everyone wants to play in as long as they are on the winning side.”Our coach John Harmer has looked at the stats and he said if you score 180 you have a 70% chance of winning, if you score 190 you have an 80% chance of winning and if you push over 200 you have a 95% chance of winning,” she said.Connor said the side had benefited from having six players out in New Zealand and Australia playing over the summer and she believed the side had the potential to beat those two countries if they could put together longer periods of dominance.Mental toughness was one advantage the trans-Tasman nations had over England. She agreed with Chopra that the tournament concept was a winner and she added that the Lincoln University venue for New Zealand Cricket’s High Performance Centre was outstanding for this type of event.”It has been brilliant. We knew it would be intense, but that is what we play cricket for,” she said. Her side now heads to Brisbane to start the Ashes series with Australia and while she had been pre-occupied with the World Series it was now time to start looking at the Ashes. She admitted it would be tough especially as the Australians had such a good bowling attack which was dominated by Cathryn Fitzpatrick, but the other bowlers were not so much of a handful while the key batsmen were Belinda Clark, Karen Rolton and Lisa Sthalekar was emerging.”If we play well, and if we’re consistent we have got every chance of doing well,” she said.

Andre Creary to lead West Indies Under-19

Jamaican allrounder Andre Creary will lead a 15-man West Indies squad for the Under-19 World Cup beginning in New Zealand in January

Cricinfo staff25-Dec-2009Jamaican allrounder Andre Creary will lead a 15-man West Indies squad for the Under-19 World Cup beginning in New Zealand in January. Yannick Ottley, an allrounder from Trinidad and Tobago, will be his deputy. The West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) chairman of selectors Clyde Butts, who was coach of the Under-19 team during the World Cup in Bangladesh in 2004 and was manager during the 2008 edition in Malaysia, said the “balanced” outfit had the potential to win the competition.”I think we have a very good team and I am confident they have the ability to go all the way,” Butts said on Thursday. “The team is a balanced one with quality batting, very good bowling and excellent in the field. I especially expect a lot from the two leg-spinners Akeem Dwyer and Yannic Cariah, who are capable match-winners. They (team) know what is required and the two leg-spinners add to the balance because they are very capable batsmen as well.”Creary represented West Indies in the 2008 World Cup, where his team emerged victorious in the Plate final. Butts, though, believed the team this time around was a much-improved one. “I can see them going all the way. This team is better balanced than two years ago when we went to Malaysia and won the Plate Final,” he said. “Since I saw them in the Under-19 tournament in Jamaica and the WICB One-Day tournament in Guyana, you can see the vast improvement and development. They play well together and were excellent during the recent camp in St Kitts. You could clearly see the improvement and the boys are very enthusiastic.”West Indies are expected to arrive in New Zealand on January 2, and will play two warm-up games, against Ireland and Australia in Christchurch and Lincoln respectively. They begin their World Cup campaign against Pakistan on January 15 before taking on Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea.Butts said West Indies will aim to make the most of the two-week preparation ahead of the tournament. “It will be very important that the players make the mental and physical adjustment in New Zealand,” he said. “The conditions will be a challenge, New Zealand is literally on other side of the world, but the big advantage, is that the team will be arriving early and will have the chance to play warm-up matches. They will be travelling straight to New Zealand so they should have enough time to get set for the big competition.”Squad: Andre Creary (capt), Yannick Ottley (vice-capt), Jermaine Blackwood, Nelson Bolan, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Yannic Cariah, Akeem Dewar, Shane Dowrich (wk), Nicholson Gordon, Trevon Griffiths, Jason Holder, Keon Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jomel Warrican.

Aamer's career hampered by stress fractures – Nazar

Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has revealed that three stress fractures to the back nearly derailed Mohammad Aamer’s career even before it started

Mudassar Nazar: “He has always had the knack of digesting information from coaches and from what I have seen, he is a very quick learner”•AFP

Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has called Mohammad Aamer a diamond of Pakistan cricket while revealing how three stress fractures of the back almost derailed his career even before it started. Aamer, the teenage left-arm fast bowler who impressed in the ICC World Twenty20 in England and on the tour of Sri Lanka, was a student at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where Nazar served as director till last November.Nazar said he spotted Aamer as a 14-year-old at an academy in Rawalpindi and was instantly impressed with his abilities as a quick bowler. He summoned Aamer to the NCA where he developed his talent before heading to England with the Under-19 squad in 2007. He bowled nearly 70 overs and took six wickets in the two unofficial Tests. But Aamer had to return early due to a back injury and it later came to light that it was far more serious than anyone had imagined.”When we analysed Aamer at the NCA upon his return to Pakistan, it came to light that he was suffering from three stress fractures to his back,” Nazar told . “Two of the fractures had been present since the age of 11 or 12, and the third was suffered in England on the U-19 tour.”The earlier fractures were probably as a result of playing cricket at a young age, perhaps street cricket or tape ball cricket and Aamer was probably not even aware of the fact that he was suffering from the fractures. The third fracture was as a result of being overbowled on the Under 19 tour of England, when Imad Wasim was his skipper. To be fair to Imad, he had no idea of the injury and he was just a very young lad himself given the job of being skipper.”More damaging than being overbowled, Nazar said, was the fact that the Pakistan Cricket Board didn’t take enough precautions to protect its players from injury.”There was no physio with the U-19 squad that went to England, which was a huge mistake by the PCB and Aamer’s career could have been ended before it even started due to this oversight by the PCB,” Nazar said. “Aamer came back to Pakistan after the tour and was complaining of stiffness. When he was examined, the stress fractures came to light. Aamer lost one year of his development due to the back injury and it took a lot of hard work on his part and from NCA staff to get him fit again.”He added that Aamer’s suffered another jolt when he was sent to Malaysia for the U-19 World Cup last year when he wasn’t fully fit. Aamer’s first-class career really took off in his debut season, where he took 55 wickets for National Bank of Pakistan.”I also recall when he was selected for the U-19 World Cup, I told the selectors not to send him and to instead let us work with him at the academy,” Nazar said. “However my instructions were ignored and luckily in my opinion Aamer came back early from that tour due to a fever.”Nazar added that himself and other coaches have been very impressed with Aamer’s attitude.”On that tour of England, Bob Willis (former England fast bowler) said that he could see something special in Mohammad Aamer and that he was a very fine prospect,” Nazar said. “A lot of the media and former cricketers could see that Aamer was by far the best bowler on either side and he already knew the ropes regarding pace bowling. He has always had the knack of digesting information from coaches and from what I have seen he is a very quick learner.”

Raj Singh Dungarpur dies aged 73

Raj Singh Dungarpur, the former BCCI president, has died aged 73 following a prolonged illness. He took 206 wickets at 28.84 for Rajasthan in 86 first-class matches before retiring and focusing on cricket administration. The Indian board paid tribute to the work done by Dungarpur, calling him a ‘visionary’ for his role in setting up the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.”It is a great loss to Indian cricket. Rajbhai served Indian cricket diligently and with distinction, in several capacities,” BCCI president Shashank Manohar said. “He was a self-effacing individual who always put the sport, and Indian cricket in particular, above everything else.”

The Oman offspinner Amir Ali has been reported for a suspect bowling action

Cricinfo staff06-Apr-2009The Oman offspinner Amir Ali has been reported for a suspect bowling action. Celtic: Stiliyan Petrov’s CEO answer

Celtic icon Stiliyan Petrov was recently asked if he would consider becoming Dominic McKay’s replacement at Parkhead, The Scottish Sun report.

The Lowdown: McKay’s exit

McKay left the club earlier this month, just 72 days after arriving through the door at Celtic Park.

The Hoops cited personal reasons for his exit, however, stories have since emerged that McKay may have jumped before he was pushed.

Former Celtic defender Ramon Vega reportedly wants to take over from McKay, something Petrov is aware of, and the former midfielder has had his say on possibly taking over.

The Latest: Petrov’s comments

The Scottish Sun shared a story on Wednesday, where Petrov was quizzed on numerous Celtic-related topics.

One of which was on the club’s CEO vacancy, to which he was asked if he would consider the role.

The report claims that Petrov smiled, and said:

“I have studied but they have a lot of candidates for it. I saw Ramon Vega put himself forward.

“They have to make a decision because you see how important this position is. You see it at other clubs.

“There needs to be people looking at the short, medium and long term, because if you don’t have a plan then you don’t have a direction.

“I hope they can sort things out very quickly. There are some other issues that have to be addressed and you need that balance to have success.”

The Verdict: Celtic need to take action

McKay’s departure was confirmed almost two weeks ago now, so Celtic could do with bringing in his permanent replacement as soon as possible.

Michael Nicholson is in interim charge, but with the winter transfer window fast approaching, securing a full-time replacement could help Ange Postecoglou when it comes to planning for January.

It doesn’t look as if that man will be Petrov, but it may well turn out to be Vega, who is seemingly interested in the position.

In other news: Celtic now working on ‘top’ transfer without McKay; 48 y/o says he ‘would shine’ in Glasgow.
