KSCA to introduce real-time video analysis in coaching

With the help of technology that will be used for the first time in cricket coaching, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is set to introduce real-time video analysis for player training at its academy in Bangalore. The technology allows coaches to instantly access replays of deliveries on a hand-held device such as an iPad to provide more informed advice to players during a practice session. It can provide replays of a delivery from several different cameras, and can be used to monitor six nets simultaneously. The KSCA plans to initially use the technology for the Karnataka Ranji squad and at the Under-16 and U-19 levels in Bangalore, and intends to take it to smaller centres in the state like Mysore, Mangalore and Shimoga over the next year. The system is called Cognitive Video-based Coaching (CVBC) and was developed with the help of Belgium-based company EVS.Javagal Srinath, the KSCA secretary, was excited at the introduction of the new system. “We are the first to implement this,” he said. “In 10 years, coaching will be meaningless without technology like this.”The main advantage of the system, he felt, was that the instant feedback would help players analyse and work on their flaws during a practice session itself, instead of having to wait and watch it after the nets. He also said the CVBC will provide higher-quality pictures than those used in existing video analysis systems. The KSCA also has a large screen (6′ by 8′) for players and coaches to review a shot or bowling action immediately after a delivery.Srinath said any tips provided under the CVBC would be “proof-based”, which would help increase understanding between coaches and players.”Coaches will speak only from the pictures on the hand-held device or the big screen, giving no room for constructing contaminated imaginations in the mind of the players.”He said the new system would complement traditional coaching methods. “Even without technology, people will still score runs, cricket will still be played, but we are just trying to make the learning simple.”

England middle-order battle heats up

Jos Buttler couldn’t help Somerset end their run of second-place finishes in county cricket, but gave another demonstration of his talent against Surrey at Lord’s

Jos Buttler couldn’t help Somerset end their run of second-place finishes in county cricket, but gave another demonstration of his talent against Surrey at Lord’s. The day after Jonny Bairstow burst onto the international stage with a matchwinning innings against India, Buttler gave his own eye-catching demonstration with 86 off 72 balls in the CB40 final. There is an increasing battle for places in the England limited-overs teams after Bairstow and Ravi Bopara took the opportunities presented by the absences of Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan. Those two senior players will also miss the Twenty20s against West Indies this week – while Morgan is ruled out of the India tour next month – which means an opportunity to impress before the squads for India are announced.Bairstow’s unbeaten 41 off 21 balls at Cardiff has assured him of a trip to the subcontinent, but Buttler, who was called into the one-day squad as cover for the final match, is perhaps battling Ben Stokes, the Durham allrounder, for a place in the touring party. Stokes played the first four matches against India, although he only batted twice and struggled against spin.He is also still unable to bowl due to the broken finger he suffered earlier in the season, so Buttler’s performance at Lord’s came at a good moment and his county captain, Marcus Trescothick, believes he showed his rapid development.”He can play some great innings just like that,” Trescothick said. “It was quite reserved for Jos. We’ve all seen it when he bangs it left, right and centre out of the ground. It was very mature. It was the perfect knock for the situation of the game.”It was great to watch. We’ve seen enough great times of Jos over the last couple of years to justify him being in the international team,” he added. “If he can continue to play like that and get the opportunity to play in international games, England supporters are going to see some good performances because he is a serious player.”Buttler’s place in the Twenty20 squad to face West Indies means he didn’t travel with Somerset to the Champions League on Sunday although could link up with the squad if they progress through the qualifying stage in Hyderabad. The odds are stacked against them, however, as they have two games in two days with the first less than 24 hours after arriving in India. Yet if he doesn’t reach India with his county, Buttler is making a strong case to go there with his country.

Can West Indies learn from India?

Big Picture

West Indies with Chris Gayle are competitive at times. West Indies without Gayle have seemed as flat as a flawed artist who lost whatever little inspiration he had. The familiar script has played out: there have been few partnerships of substance, the precious few have been broken at the wrong time, and the house has collapsed in a heap. The bowlers have not been getting enough breakthroughs, when they have managed to, they haven’t been able to sustain any pressure. Like a closed loop, West Indies continue to stumble from one failure to another.Men placed in seemingly hopeless situations have no choice but to cling on to hope, and that is what Darren Sammy has been doing. After every loss, he puts on a brave face and undertakes an honest search for positives. When the execution is flawed, he talks about intent being there. He wants Ramnaresh Sarwan to play the role of a finisher; Sarwan’s strike-rate has remained stuck in the early 60s.Not that West Indies haven’t had their moments so far. Not often does one find them in a commanding position of 175 for 2 with 14 overs to go. Nor do they often have the opposition on the mat at four down with more than a 100 still needed. Such potential match-winning positions have been frittered away though, allowing an Indian side missing several regulars to be on the verge of their third ODI series win in four tours. While most attention has been focussed on West Indies’ woes, Suresh Raina’s side has efficiently chugged to three victories. The difference between the two teams has been India’s ability to shut the opposition out, something West Indies badly need to do. There were concerns before the tour began about how India would fare with their depleted squad, and so far, the bench has showed it has strength, albeit against a team ranked six places below them.

The spotlight

Nothing epitomises the spirit of this young Indian team better than the continuing growth of Virat Kohli. He realised he was risking throwing it all away, and has moulded himself into a batsman who is expected to bat through the innings and finish games. He did that in the previous match, also becoming the third-fastest Indian to 2000 ODI runs. The expectations will be the same tomorrow.Sammy reminded Ramnaresh Sarwan in Trinidad that he was once compared to Michael Bevan as a capable limited-overs finisher. Sarwan has done it on numerous occasions, like when he took West Indies to a thrilling win against India in 2002 with a last-ball boundary. The Sarwan of old was classy and combative. The runs are still coming, albeit a lot more slowly and the fight doesn’t seem to be there, especially when it is sorely needed in Gayle’s absence. Can the vintage Sarwan make a re-appearance?

Team news

West Indies made a couple of changes to the squad, resting Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul. Sammy said the pitch in Antigua would have more life in it, which makes the decision to rest Rampaul seem a little strange. Darren Bravo should return tomorrow, making it unlikely that Danza Hyatt will make his ODI debut.West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Kirk Edwards, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Marlon Samuels, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell/Anthony Martin, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Carlton Baugh (wk), 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Devendra Bishoo. With Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth set to miss the Tests due to injuries, India would want to give Ishant Sharma a go during this series, considering there is no warm-up game before the next leg of the tour. Amit Mishra’s four wickets in the second ODI mean an in-form R Ashwin will continue to miss out.India (possible): 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 S Badrinath, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina (capt), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Munaf Patel.

Stats and trivia

  • In the previous ODI at the Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua, Darren Sammy smashed an unbeaten 58 off 24 balls at No. 9 against South Africa in 2010. It remains his highest ODI score.

Guarani x Ponte Preta: clubes promovem treino aberto à torcida

New York could host Full Member teams in August

USA Cricket Association President Gladstone Dainty is attempting to arrange another set of matches involving New Zealand later this year that could potentially be played in New York

Peter Della Penna28-Feb-2011USA Cricket Association President Gladstone Dainty is attempting to arrange another set of matches involving New Zealand later this year that could potentially be played in New York.”We’re very seriously looking to do something in August,” Dainty told ESPNcricinfo. “We don’t have another [team] yet, but we’re looking to do something in August.” USA hosted New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Florida last May for a pair of Twenty20 games that took place shortly after the conclusion of the World Twenty20 in the West Indies. While matches might be played in Florida, New York could also become a viable option after Dainty revealed plans to install a turf wicket at Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field. A USA XI played two matches against a West Indies XI captained by Brian Lara at the same ground in 2006. Floyd Bennett Field also shows up in the 2008 Joseph O’Neill novel , a fictional story about a man who uses cricket to help piece his life back together after 9/11.”We’re still working on getting this facility in New York going,” Dainty said. “I’m hoping that it’ll be ready by August.” Dainty would not reveal how much money it would cost to make upgrades including the turf wicket at Floyd Bennett Field. It is also unknown if the costs would be covered by the group of investors behind Cricket Holdings America or if the money would be coming from a different source.Dainty feels that the turf wicket would be ready for immediate use once it’s put in place while the long term viability of the facility would be achieved by utilising the site for a domestic Twenty20 league in the USA. Dainty told ESPNcricinfo in December that CHA was hoping to start the proposed league by the summer of 2012.USA played Jamaica in a series concurrent with the Sri Lanka and New Zealand matches in Florida last year, but Dainty did not know if something similar would be planned to involve USA for the next time around. Speaking about the team’s fortunes at the ICC WCL Division Three in Hong Kong, Dainty acknowledged that the squad was underprepared for the tour and that it played a part in USA’s last-place finish.”The team to me didn’t do very well in Hong Kong,” Dainty said. “I’m not going to be the one that’s blaming the team alone. For all of us, I would say that the team was not a very well prepared team. In terms of when they were playing, it was their offseason for most of them. Even during the national championships, I didn’t see the energy from a lot of the players.”I really think that when we did not get [Neil] McGarrell in the team that it hurt us a lot,” Dainty said, in reference to the former West Indies Test spinner who was originally included in USA’s squad. McGarrell had to be replaced when the ICC ruled him ineligible to play for USA based on residency requirements. “What happened in Hong Kong is not a failure of 14 or 17 guys; it’s the program as a whole because they were not well prepared. It was US cricket as a whole. We needed additional funding for them to play some more.”Even though there is a significant amount of funding that USACA is set to receive from signing the deal with CHA, the bulk of it will not trickle down until later in the year.”We have sources of funding now. I wouldn’t say we have all the money right now, but we have sources now,” Dainty said. “We’ve got enough funding to do what we want to do, but remember we didn’t have a lot of funding to run the national championship, even the Under-19 tournament we had to put off. Since then we had one camp and then the funding came in.”Dainty was unhappy that Howard Johnson, the team’s 46-year-old assistant coach, was inserted into the starting XI for the match against Papua New Guinea. Johnson was added to the squad after batsman Aditya Thyagarajan went down in the second game against Denmark with an injured knee. Johnson last played for the USA at the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland prior to his one-off appearance in Hong Kong.”Based on what I knew in terms of Howard being included in the squad, we had a player who was injured and because of the logistics, we were more concerned about somebody emergency fielding,” Dainty said, indicating that it did not make sense to fly in a replacement player from the USA. “And then you know … never did I think he would be put there as a player. If we knew that Howard was such a strong candidate to play, we should have known that before. I was as disappointed as anyone else.””That should not be a reflection of Howard. Howard is a very nice and decent man and I don’t think he should have been asked to do that at all. I don’t know who should take responsibility but I hope it won’t happen again. I’ve never been a micromanager, but this type of situation certainly needs more managing.”

Eu estava pressionado. Pessoalmente, me cobro muito, sempre quero melhorar.

Leeds: Hay and Smyth react to Andres Clavijo exit

Leeds United correspondents Phil Hay and Graham Smyth have been reacting to Andres Clavijo’s Elland Road exit.

The Lowdown: Clavijo’s exit

The Whites decided to sack Marcelo Bielsa on Sunday after a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at Elland Road, leaving them just two points above the bottom three.

Former RB Leipzig manager Jesse Marsch has since been announced as the Argentine’s successor and has already brought in Cameron Toshack as number two.

Bielsa’s assistants, Diego Reyes, Pablo Quiroga and Luis Ouvina followed the former boss out of Thorp Arch, along with fitness coach Benoit Delaval.

Performance analyst Clavijo, known better by fans for being Bielsa’s translator, confirmed on Wednesday evening that he too would also be leaving the club.

The Latest: Hay and Smyth react

This is what Hay had to say in reply to Clavijo’s update on Twitter.

“A nice guy, Andres. Very much part of the weekly press routine with Bielsa. Best of luck to him.”

Meanwhile, Smyth posted a short clip of Bielsa and Clavijo, available to view here, and wished him well.

The Verdict: Not a shock

It seemed to be just a matter of time until Clavijo’s departure was confirmed, so the news doesn’t exactly come as a surprise.

He was brought in by Bielsa, unlike goalkeeper coach Marcos Abad and head of analysis Guillermo Alonso, who look set to stay at the club after previously working under Victor Orta at Middlesbrough.

Marsch has already made his mark by bringing in Toshack, along with Franz Schiemer and Mark Jackson, and you’d expect there could be more staff additions to come between now and the end of the season.
