Blake rises above poor batting

ScorecardEven Mark Ramprakash struggled to bring a semblance of common sense batting to County Championship proceedings at The Oval, where another 15 wickets fell on a helter-skelter second day.Having dismissed Kent for 250 to gain a first-innings advantage of 137, Surrey then stumbled to 138 for 7 by the mid-point of a second division match played more like a Twenty20 bash than a conventional Championship tussle.Despite reasonable batting conditions and the fact Kent are without three frontline bowlers, the wicket count continued to blossom as Surrey lost their first four leg before to ill-disciplined shots.Openers Rory Hamilton-Brown and Jason Roy both fell to on-loan Hampshire seamer David Balcombe, who later returned to have Tom Maynard caught behind.First innings century-maker Zander de Bruyn played around a rare straight one from Robbie Joseph, while Ramprakash perished for 20 after an uncharacteristic rush of blood and an attempted legside flick against left-armer Ashley Shaw.Surrey’s demise continued late in the day when occasional leg-spinner Joe Denly snared Steven Davies (39) and Gareth Batty without scoring as Kent restricted the home lead to 275.Having resumed at the start of the day on a perilous overnight position of 26 for 2 – still 361 in arrears – Kent appeared hell-bent on following on.They lost four wickets for 35 runs in the morning session as Sam Northeast played outside the line of a Stuart Meaker off-cutter that brushed off stump then, in Meaker’s next over, Martin van Jaarsveld edged low to first slip to go without scoring.Visiting captain Rob Key walked across his stumps working to leg against Tim Linley to go leg before then Darren Stevens padded up to the same bowler to make it 87 for 6 . Seventh-wicket partners Alex Blake and Geraint Jones both enjoyed good fortune and Blake would have gone for a duck had Hamilton-Brown held on to a sharp low chance at slip.As it was, the pair flourished to set a new seventh-wicket record stand against Surrey, beating the 132 posted by George Collins and Jack Hubble at The Mote in Maidstone in 1926 by six runs. They took Kent to the brink of avoiding the follow-on before Jones, on 61 from 100 balls, aimed a reverse sweep against off-spinner Batty only to balloon a bat-pad catch to Roy at short leg.Ten runs on, Wahab Riaz mowed a good length ball from Batty to cow corner but picked out Ramprakash, bringing in Balcombe who forced through the covers for four to ensure Surrey would bat third. Two balls later Balcombe lost his off stump to a Chris Tremlett yorker and only four short of his second championship century, Blake then tossed his own wicket away. Turning for two against the deep cover fielder Roy, he was sent back by last man Shaw to be run out at the non-striker’s end.

Kumar Sangakkara will deliver the eleventh MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s on July 4 2011.He will become the first Sri Lankan and the first current international cricketer to be invited to speak at the annual event which comes a day after Sri Lanka meet England at Lord’s for the third ODI of the series.Sangakkara will also take over from 2009 speaker, Adam Gilchrist, as the youngest man to deliver the lecture, which has been given by people such as Geoffrey Boycott, Desmond Tutu and, most recently, Imran Khan. The lecture was inaugurated in 2001 in memory of the late Colin Cowdrey, a past president of MCC, who – together with another former club president, Ted Dexter – was instrumental in the Spirit of Cricket being included as the Preamble to the 2000 Code of the Laws of Cricket.Christopher Martin-Jenkins, the commentator and current MCC President, said: “Sri Lanka have been so consistently successful in world cricket that it is very appropriate that a distinguished cricketer from this beautiful country should be giving the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey lecture.”Kumar Sangakkara is widely respected in cricket not only as a brilliant player but as a highly intelligent one. His views on topical matters will be truly illuminating and many people will be looking forward to hearing what he has to say.”

A vida continua. CBF continua. É uma instituição maior do que todos e hoje de maneira especial, com a eleição do Rogério para presidente – finalizou.

Yasir Hameed files complaint against NOTW

Yasir Hameed, the Pakistan batsman, has lodged a formal complaint with the UK Press Complaint Commission against the tabloid , which had done a video sting operation on him last year

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Feb-2011Yasir Hameed, the Pakistan batsman, has lodged a formal complaint with the UK Press Complaint Commission against the tabloid . Hameed, who last played for Pakistan on the 2010 tour to England, was the subject of a video sting operation by the tabloid, in which he was seen discussing the fall-out of the Lord’s spot-fixing controversy and, among other things, an approach by a bookie during the 2004 Champions Trophy in England.Hameed says he was duped by the investigative reporter who came to him in a hotel in Nottingham claiming to be a representative of a global airline who wanted to talk about possible sponsorship deals, days after the end of the four-Test series, and is now seeking a formal apology and retraction from the tabloid. The complaint centres on four points, of inaccurate reporting, a breach of privacy, misrepresentation of character and harassment. Hameed opted to wait till the end of the spot-fixing hearings and a definitive verdict before he filed the complaint.Soon after the video came to light, Hameed was called to the Pakistan High Commission in London to explain his utterances in the video. He issued a statement later that day saying that the man, an Abid Khan, sent him intimidating SMSs after the meeting when Hameed denied what had been attributed to him.Hameed was also asked to explain the incident to the PCB’s integrity committee earlier this year, and he apologised to the board about the conversation. “I was trapped into it but I should not have said all that before a stranger and I apologise to all the players who were hurt because of that,” Hameed had told . It is believed the board has held back on his payments from the tour, though it isn’t clear whether it is because of this incident.

Rangers missed a trick on Veerman

It’s fair to say that Rangers have had a disappointing second half of the season, despite the Europa League triumphs, the side’s Scottish Premiership form has been poor.

Coming into January with a six-point lead was the ideal scenario for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his men, then the winter break happened, and Rangers lost arguably their best player of the season, Joe Aribo, to the Africa Cup of Nations and the wheels fell off slightly.

The onus was on van Bronckhorst to strengthen, especially in the midfield areas following Aribo’s brief departure and the sale of Juninho Bacuna, however, the club missed out on an excellent opportunity.

During the summer and January windows, the Gers were constantly linked with Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman, who was playing at Heerenveen. A deal couldn’t be struck and as van Bronckhorst moved into his first transfer window with the team during January, there were hopes of a chance to secure him.

Yet again, Rangers were slack, and PSV Eindhoven eventually signed the midfielder for £5m as he joined his boyhood club.

Former Rangers striker Michael Mols lavished “perfect” praise on his fellow Dutchman and it’s not hard to see why.

Since his arrival at PSV, Veerman has scored six and notched six assists in only 21 matches, a fabulous return.

If we compare this to Aribo in the same period, two goals and five assists, it proves that the Ibrox side should have splashed the cash in January and the club may have been heading into the last four matches in the league with their six-point advantage still intact.

As the summer transfer window looms on the horizon, Ross Wilson can’t afford to let similar players of that class escape their grasp again. After all, with Aribo touted with an exit, 23-year-old Veerman would very much have been the perfect heir.

Embleton stole the show for Sunderland

Sunderland provided a huge response following their midweek stalemate with Plymouth Argyle by taking an impressive 5-1 victory from Cambridge United yesterday.

Alex Neil and his team are now on a 12-game unbeaten run, with the Scottish manager only losing once since he arrived at the club in February, and they now find themselves fourth in the League One table albeit only one point safe in the play-off position.

The Black Cats put in a phenomenal attacking performance that was boosted when Cambridge went down to ten men in the 12th minute of the game, with Lloyd Jones getting red-carded awarding their hosts a penalty which Ross Stewart scored to make it 1-0 a minute later.

Sunderland were dominant throughout the game holding 75% possession, making ten more shots on target and over 400 more accurate passes than their opponents on Saturday afternoon.

Elliot Embleton, Danny Batth and Nathan Broadhead all joined Stewart in getting on the scoresheet delivering five goals in total, and Embleton, in particular, was an absolute force in the attacking threat his team imposed on Cambridge and offered an unrivalled presence.

The 23-year-old who was labelled “complex” by former manager Lee Johnson, made an impressive 141 touches, 113 accurate passes, four key passes and was successful in the majority of his long balls and crosses (12/21).

Embleton has been integral in Sunderland’s play-off charge as of late and has delivered in the moments when it has been needed most, grabbing his opportunities to impress his new manager following a lack of game-time since the Scotsman took over at the Stadium of Light.

Neil had been playing the midfielder off the bench, but he has now finally integrated him back into the starting eleven over the last two games following an assist to the last-minute winning goal against Gillingham and scoring the winner against Oxford in the final moments in the following game, with his contribution earning the Black Cats six points in just 27 minutes of play.

The fight for a play-off place isn’t over with the North-East club safe by just a point with one game in hand over their competitors inside the top six, and with no room for error in the last two games, Sunderland must continue their unbeaten form to boost their chances of potential promotion.

Rangers: Jack Simpson poised to leave

The Daily Record Live Sports Editor Gavin Berry fully expects Rangers defender Jack Simpson to leave Ibrox this summer.

The lowdown

Rangers announced in January 2021 that they had struck a pre-contract deal with Simpson ahead of the 21/22 season, with his Bournemouth deal due to expire (via Sky Sports).

But the Steven Gerrard signing has wound up playing very little football for the Gers. His only start in the Scottish Premiership came in a 1-1 draw with Motherwell back in September, and he’s made just two substitute appearances.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Three run-outs in the SFA Cup and the Scottish League Cup take him to a measly total of six games in all competitions.

Championship outfits Swansea City and Middlesbrough reportedly enquired about a loan deal for Simpson in January, but Rangers were only interested in selling him.

The latest

The Daily Record’s Sports Editor notes that Simpson was ‘linked’ with a move away in January and thinks his time in Glasgow will be up come the summer.

He writes that the 25-year-old will ‘surely return to England’ when the transfer window opens.

The verdict

Rangers should at least make a profit, with Simpson valued at £900,000 by Transfermarkt and protected by a contract that runs until the summer of 2025.

He had a chance to impress against Motherwell in the autumn but perhaps didn’t take it, with his SofaScore rating of 6.4/10 the lowest of the team’s outfielders.

Simpson lost six of the nine duels he contested that day and was dribbled past by the opposition on three occasions.

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson was delighted with the capture of a player he called ‘highly coveted’, but now he’s seemingly now willing to sanction his sale within a year of his arrival.

In other news, Bill Young was fuming with this aspect of Rangers’ performance on Sunday.

Celtic: McLeish urges fresh Rogic talks

Pundit Alex McLeish has urged Celtic to open talks with midfielder Tom Rogic regarding a new contract, Football Insider report.

The lowdown: Ange plays down talks

Despite the 29-year-old fast approaching the final 12 months of a deal at Celtic Park, Ange Postecoglou was calm over his compatriot’s future when speaking back in February.

The Hoops’ boss has continued to rely heavily on the Australian ace though, calling upon the ever-reliable midfielder on 44 occasions across all competitions so far.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This importance hasn’t gone unnoticed as onlookers begin to speculate as to when Rogic’s future could be resolved.

The verdict: McLeish has his say

A reliable report from The Athletic has claimed that the man signed for £432,000 from Central Coast in 2013 (Transfermarkt) could look to move onto pastures new and head to Asia at the end of the season if Celtic win the league.

Speaking to FI, ex-Scotland boss McLeish is hoping that won’t happen, urging the club to open negotiations with a transformed Rogic in the near future.

“He’s been the bane of everybody recently, but he was invisible for a big period. It’s taken his countryman, Postecoglou, to come in and show the faith in him again.

“And he’s rewarded his gaffer with some incredible performances. I would have thought Celtic would make it a high priority to get Tom on board for a few more seasons.”

The verdict: No brainer

Despite an influx of exciting arrivals at Lennoxtown under the watch of Postecoglou, should all parties be willing to extend, a new deal for the 51-cap Australia star should be a straightforward decision for the club.

So far this season Rogic has scored six times and provided ten assists for Postecoglou’s side and seems certain to play a huge role in the Bhoys’ quest for a domestic treble.

As per Whoscored, the Aussie is one of the most creative players in the squad, with only three players (min. 700 minutes) creating more chances in Premiership action this season – he is simply too good to let walk.

Everton could make a bid for Malick Thiaw

Everton have not made any signings since they sacked Rafa Benitez earlier this month but had already made three additions under Benitez’s guidance.

However, now Duncan Ferguson could be set to make his first signing for the club whilst he manages the side until a new boss is appointed.

What’s the word?

According to Sport1, Everton are amongst a number of clubs interested in signing Schalke defender, Malick Thiaw, during the January transfer window.

The report suggests that Everton have competition from AC Milan, Napoli and West Ham United with a €6m (£5m) bid from Milan already rejected, and the young Bundesliga star is reportedly looking for his next challenge.

Better than Keane

Everton are currently having a season of nightmares, with the side only winning five of their Premier League games so far, conceding 11 more goals than they have scored, with several poor defensive performances put on display both home and away.

One particular performance that triggered the end of Benitez’s career as the Toffees manager was against Norwich City at Carrow Road, when Michael Keane scored an own goal that opened up the game early for the Canaries, putting them in a position to win 2-1 resulting in the tenth defeat of the season for Everton.

According to Squawka, when you compare Keane’s season to Thiaw’s campaign in the league so far, the 20-year-old has completed over 300 more passes in his own half, won more ground and aerial duels and has twice as many clean sheets than his 29-year-old counterpart.

With age on his side, Thiaw could become a hot prospect worth developing and integrating into the Everton defence if they signed him. With that in mind, it’s clear to see why the youngster has been dubbed a “big talent” by talent scout Jacek Kulig on Twitter.

The £4.5m-rated star who was also hailed “talented” by former Schalke sporting director Jochen Schneider, was previously linked with the Toffees fierce rivals, Liverpool last year, but nothing materialised.

Yet, with Schalke already rejecting an offer from another club, Ferguson and the Everton board will need to make the youngster an offer he can’t refuse if they wanted to sign him during the remaining days of the winter transfer window.
