Celtic set to miss out on Markanday

Blackburn Rovers are set to beat Celtic in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Dilan Markanday.

The lowdown

The Evening Standard reported in December that Celtic were among the clubs chasing Markanday ahead of the January transfer window.

Arch-rivals Rangers were also said to be in the frame, along with ‘a number of the Championship’s leading clubs’.

And it seems that Blackburn, currently third in England’s second tier, have seen off the competition to sign the 20-year-old, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

The latest

According to The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, Blackburn are now ‘close to agreeing’ a permanent deal for Markanday.

Rovers will pay £500,000 up front but the fee could rise beyond the £1million mark if add-ons are triggered, while Spurs have also insisted upon a ‘significant’ sell-on clause.

The ‘deal could be announced next week’, he says.

The verdict

Losing out on Markanday is a blow for Celtic. He’s only made one senior appearance for Spurs, featuring in a Europa Conference League group game against Vitesse, but he boasts an exceptional record at youth level.

In 14 Premier League 2 appearances this season, he’s been directly involved in 17 goals (scoring 12 and assisting five more).

European football journalist Alex Barker has also raved about his ‘really clever footwork and dribbling ability’.

All this points to a very bright future indeed, and Blackburn have only paid half a million for a potential star in the making.

In other news, Alan Hutton has dropped this intriguing claim on Stephen Welsh.

Sourav Ganguly fined $40,000 for poor over-rate

Sourav Ganguly, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, has been fined $40,000 by the IPL, for failing to finish bowling their overs in time in the match against Delhi Daredevils. At the end of the match, Kolkata were assessed to be two overs behind the required rate after allowances were taken into consideration. Since it was their second offence of the season, Ganguly’s team-mates also bore the brunt – each of them were poorer by $10,000.Right through the tournament, the IPL has come down hard on captains for shoddy over-rates. After the first three games of the 2010 season, four captains – Kumar Sangakkara, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Ganguly – were fined $20,000 each because their teams were not able to complete their overs on time.Punjab went on to repeat the offence twice, leading to a one-match ban on Sangakkara – a fate that could befall Ganguly if Kolkata slip up again.

West Ham handed boost in Carvalho pursuit

West Ham United have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Fabio Carvalho to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that the Fulham attacking midfielder could find a move to a Premier League side too tempting to turn down this month.

The report goes on to state that all of West Ham, Liverpool and Leeds United are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the 19-year-old – who has less than six months left to run on his current contract at Craven Cottage – ahead of a potential £5m swoop for the forward prior to the closure of the January market.

Lanzini’s heir

Considering just how impressive Carvalho has been for Fulham this season, it would appear a very smart move for Moyes to make an offer for the attacking midfielder this month, rather than waiting for the England youth international to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Indeed, the £3.15m-rated prodigy has been in breathtaking form over his 17 Championship outings in the current campaign, having already scored eight goals, provided two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots, making 1.5 key passes and completing 1.2 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the £650-per-week forward who Greg Cruttwell – one of Carvalho’s first coaches at Balham FC – dubbed “unplayable” average a SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking him as Marco Silva’s eighth-best performer in the second tier.

Indeed, there are clear similarities between the Fulham starlet and West Ham’s own Manuel Lanzini – with both players being slight in stature, being able to operate on either wing as well as their primary position in the number 10 role, being extremely comfortable in their progression of the ball and possessing a penchant for scoring spectacular goals.

And, with the Argentina international turning 30 next season, as well as his current contract expiring in the summer of 2023, it will not be long before a replacement could be required for the Hammers’ current attacking midfield magician – with it being difficult to find a more suitable candidate than Carvalho.

As such, it is our belief that the West Ham board must do all they can to fight off the competition in order to secure a deal for the 19-year-old this month, as Carvalho is clearly a player heading for the very top of the game – something he could well achieve at the London Stadium.

Stars available for Sri Lanka's provincial tournament

Sri Lanka’s much anticipated 50-over provincial cricket tournament commences on February 6 with 76 cricketers participating

The 50-over and Twenty20 tournaments will feature six teams – five provincial sides and a Sri Lanka Cricket Combined XI•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Sri Lanka’s much anticipated 50-over provincial cricket tournament commences on February 6 with 76 cricketers, including all the national players, for the championship being contested by six teams – five provincial sides and a Sri Lanka Cricket Invitation XI. This tournament will be followed by the Provincial Twenty20 and the Provincial League. The matches will be played at Colombo, Kurunegala, Galle and the newly constructed cricket stadium at Pallakele. The 50-over championship is scheduled for February 6 to 21, the Twenty20 from February 24 to March 7 and the League from March 18 to May 9. The Twenty20 has been timed properly to prepare the national cricketers ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean at the end of April.”Historically, most of the outstanding players Sri Lanka has produced are from the outstations and have been identified through provincial cricket,” Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said. “Sri Lanka Cricket has a vision to develop the game not only in Colombo but also to sustain and develop the game at the grassroots level around the country pursuing the concept of ‘Samata Cricket’ (cricket for all).”We are not just looking at unearthing potential players. Our main hold is having a provincial structure in place to promote the provincial centers, which would be well equipped to cater to the cricket starving young players in each province.”He said the SLC Combined XI, comprising players under the age of 23, are of high potential and have been given the opportunity of playing against the best players in the country.”The teams for the tournament were picked by the national selectors who spent one and a half hours. The selectors had discussions with the coaches, then with the national captain (Kumar Sangakkara) after he returned from Bangladesh and finally with the captains and coaches of the respective teams,” said Ranatunga.”In my view, the selectors have done a good job looking at all aspects before picking the players. In all aspects, all the captains and specialised coaches and coaching department heads were also involved in the selection.”Sri Lanka Cricket’s vision is to improve the structures in the provinces so that in future, these respective provincial sides will be picked by the provincial selectors and not the national selectors.”However, midway, the provincial tournament will lose a dozen top players who will be taking part in the IPL, among them being two provincial side captains Kumar Sangakkara (Kandurata) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (Basnahira South). Other key players include Mahela Jayawardene (Wayamba), Sanath Jayasuriya (Ruhuna), Muttiah Muralitharan (Kandurata), Ajantha Mendis (Wayamba) and Angelo Mathews (Basnahira North) will also be missing from the provincial line up.Wayamba, who emerged Twenty20 champions and qualified to play in the inaugural Champions League last year, will be led again by Jehan Mubarak. National cricketers Thilina Kandamby and Upul Tharanga will captain Basnahira North and Ruhuna respectively while Hans Fernando will lead the SLC XI.Last season the League leg was not played due to the unavailability of several players to national duty. Sri Lanka’s largest banking sector, Bank of Ceylon, has stepped in to sponsor the three tournaments.

Twist emerges in Celtic’s Jota pursuit

Celtic have been handed a major boost in their attempts to bring Jota to Parkhead on a permanent basis this winter.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Portuguese publication A Bola (via Sport Witness), who claim that Benfica would be more than happy for Celtic to activate their €7.5m (£6.5m) option to buy clause for the 22-year-old winger in the January transfer window.

Previous reports have suggested that, as a result of the Portugal U21 international’s success in Glasgow, Ange Postecoglou is eager to tie up the permanent signing of Jota this winter, in a bid to ensure the forward is not tempted by a more enticing offer from another club come the end of the season.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic side Jota has become since his switch to Parkhead this summer, the news that Benfica appear to be more than willing to wave goodbye to the winger on a permanent basis is sure to have left Bhoys fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 11 Scottish Premiership appearances this season, the £3.15m-rated man has scored five goals, registered four assists and created two big chances for his teammates, while, over his five Europa League fixtures, the £7.1k-per-week winger has bagged a further two goals, two assists and created four big chances.

These returns have seen the player, who Postecoglou dubbed an “unbelievable” talent, average a SofaScore match rating of 7.38 in the league and 7.40 in Europe, ranking him as the Hoops’ fifth-best and best performer in the respective competitions.

And, while it is true that Benfica’s stance on the forward’s potential transfer is not overly important – as Celtic can activate their option to buy clause without the Portuguese side’s permission – should the Liga NOS club have informed Jota that he could be in line for a starting spot at the Estadio da Luz next season, this may well have influenced the 22-year-old’s decision as to whether or not he would be willing to accept Celtic’s offer of a permanent deal.

As such, the news that Benfica will not stand in the way of Celtic’s swoop for the player who Postecgolou “wants to keep” is sure to come as a major boost for everyone involved with the club, as the Portuguese starlet remaining at Parkhead beyond the end of the current campaign is something that bodes incredibly well for the Bhoys’ future.

West Ham eye January move for Brennan Johnson

West Ham boss David Moyes could form a devastating attacking duo by pairing Said Benrahma with Nottingham Forest starlet Brennan Johnson.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Daily Mail, the Hammers are one of a number of Premier League sides to have joined the race to sign Johnson.

It’s been suggested that if Forest receive a bid meeting their valuation, then the 20-year-old could well be sold in the upcoming January transfer window rather than in the summer too.

Imagine him and Benrahma

The forward enjoyed an impressive campaign on loan at Lincoln City in League One last season, scoring ten goals and providing a further twelve assists in the league – his displays were key as they made the play-off final, losing to Blackpool 2-1 despite him setting up a goal at Wembley.

With that canny knack of finding himself in the right place at the right time, there’s a lot to like about Johnson’s game, and he could well thrive alongside a play-maker like Benrahma in this West Ham team.

Johnson’s former manager at Forest, Sabri Lamouchi, hailed him not just as an “unbelievable player” but one with the “right mentality” too, and that will surely be music to the ears of Moyes.

His boss at Lincoln, Michael Appleton has raved about the fearlessness of the versatile attacker, saying: “Brennan has been great. He has a lot of pace and gives us directness when we look to counter. He has played in numerous positions for us. He has played as a nine, as a ten, as a central midfielder. He has never moaned and just gets on with it.”

Having two, young attacking midfielders who have both really cut their teeth in the leagues below the Premier League could see the Hammers form one of the most exciting duos in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, this man was David Moyes’ shining light vs Spurs…

Newcastle transfer news on Camara

Newcastle United are reportedly now in a transfer battle with two other clubs in the Premier League to sign Aguibou Camara.

The Lowdown: Catching the eye

Camara is certainly a player that is catching the eye this season following his move from Lille to Olympiacos.

The central midfield player has scored five goals and made a further two assists in 17 games in total over all competitions so far (Football Transfers).

Nonetheless, at just 20 years of age, Camara is a player to watch out for in the future.

The Latest: Premier League battle

As per The Sun, the St. James’ Park faithful are now locked in a battle with both Liverpool and Leicester City for Camara, who is currently rated at £20m.

They are reportedly ‘keeping tabs’ on the Guinea international ahead of a potential move, and have made contact with his agent.

However, other intermediaries are trying to get in on the deal, and describe him as ‘one of the most exciting talents in Europe right now’.

AS Monaco, Bologna, Valencia and Villarreal are also eyeing Camara, who looks set to be in high demand as the January transfer window opens.

The Verdict: Perfect for the Prem

Given Kante’s success in the top flight, in where he won back-to-back league titles with Leicester City and Chelsea, Camara is a player that should also thrive in the division.

His energy in the midfield is perfect for its fast pace, and he has already shown in the UEFA Europa League this campaign that he can play at a high level.

Camara has won no fewer than 8.5 of his duels per game in the group stages so far, and has also averaged 3.8 tackles, 2.3 successful dribbles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.3 shots per match (SofaScore), suggesting that he has all of the attributes to succeed.

Given the competition for his signature, it would be a real coup if the North East club were to sign him, as he could well turn out to be a key player in their fight against relegation.
