Maharashtra lead after Fallah burst

ScorecardAfter taking seven wickets, Samad Fallah is just two short of 200 wickets in first-class cricket•Dainik Dabang Dunia

Twice before this season, Maharashtra had won the toss, sent their opponents out to bat on greentops, and rolled them over on the first day. On both those occasions – against Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh – their batsmen had backed up their bowlers’ efforts by coming out and scoring 400-plus totals. On the morning of Maharashtra’s first Ranji Trophy semi-final in 17 years, the pitch at the Holkar Stadium wore an even coat of green. Rohit Motwani, their captain, won another toss. His bowlers, yet again, exploited the conditions perfectly, and bowled Bengal out in 41.4 overs. The batsmen came out and made a still lively surface and an acclaimed bowling attack look more or less manageable. Maharashtra ended the day 50 runs ahead with six wickets in hand.On the eve of the match, his 50th in first-class cricket, Samad Fallah had reminded mediapersons that he was closing in on 200 wickets. When Saturday dawned, the left-arm seamer needed nine more to get there. When he bowled Shib Paul, Bengal’s No. 11, his tally had risen to 198.It wasn’t the best day for a Bengal batsman to make his debut. Koushik Ghosh, the left-handed opener, realised this when he pushed forward at Fallah in the third over of the morning, to a ball pitched on off stump. The line forced Ghosh to play, and the away-swing produced a healthy tickle to first slip despite the fact that his bat had remained close to his body and his head more or less over the top of the ball.Fallah changed his angle of approach frequently over the remainder of his spell, but never lost his direction. From left-arm round, wide of the crease, he swung one into the right-handed Abhimanyu Easwaran to trap him lbw. This was the last ball of his seventh over. First ball of his eighth, Fallah went over the wicket to the left-handed Sudip Chatterjee, and speared one into the blockhole for another lbw.The last five balls of that over, all to Wriddhiman Saha, went as follows: an imploring shout for lbw and the hat-trick (close, but not given); another lbw appeal (close again); a half-steer, half-edge to third man for four; one more lbw appeal (just as loud, perhaps not as close); and an inside-edge that dropped inches in front of short leg.Fallah bowled two more overs in that spell. At the other end, Anupam Sanklecha and Domnic Joseph were complementing him brilliantly. They didn’t attack the stumps quite as much, sticking instead to a fifth-stump line, and tightened the screws on Bengal’s batsmen. They took a wicket each, as did Harshad Khadiwale, who tempted Saha to flash at his gentle medium-pace and nick to wicketkeeper Motwani. In Khadiwale’s previous over, Arindam Das had attempted the same shot, with almost the same result; Sangram Atitkar had dropped him at first slip.Fallah cleaned up the rest. Extra bounce consumed Laxmi Shukla, while extravagant inswing did for Arindam – who had played an innings that contained as many plays-and-misses as elegant clips and drives. Sourav Sarkar and Paul, Nos. 9 and 11, slogged themselves out off successive deliveries, leaving Fallah on a hat-trick once more. When Paul went, bowled heaving across the line, Ashok Dinda at the other end aimed a similar heave at nothing in particular. He had been left not out on 0 off 1 ball. Dinda channeled that frustration into his bowling, leaping higher than ever into his delivery stride, and worked up pace of a sort that none of Maharashtra’s bowlers – barring Sanklecha, on occasion – had come close to producing.Dinda’s radar, however, wasn’t quite right. His first ball, angled into Khadiwale’s pads, was worked away for two. Four of the next five balls were similarly drawn to the batsmen’s pads. Khadiwale took a single, Chirag Khurana scored a boundary and a single, Khadiwale hit another four. That over set the tone for an opening partnership of 78. Dinda bowled too straight, his new-ball partner Sarkar bowled either too full or too short; Khurana, moving his feet decisively, drove or cut him repeatedly through the off side.In the first over after tea, Dinda broke the partnership with another ball angled down leg, Khurana getting a tickle to the wicketkeeper. An inducker from Shukla in the next over bowled Khadiwale. Bengal sniffed a chance, and filled the air with chatter. It grew in volume when Shukla curved one into the left-handed Vijay Zol to trap him on the shuffle. It didn’t let up for the rest of the afternoon, but it didn’t affect Kedar Jadhav and Ankit Bawne. Jadhav repeatedly walked out of his crease to the seamers, and struck eight crisply- timed fours – mostly whipped off his legs or driven through cover on one knee – before popping a return catch to Dinda.Bawne was watchful outside off stump but drove assuredly whenever the ball was pitched up, and had reached 37 at stumps. With him was Motwani, batting on 8. He hadn’t yet opened his account when Ghosh dropped him at gully off Dinda. It was a forgettable end to a forgettable first day for Bengal.

Hales given IPL green light

England batsman Alex Hales has been cleared to play in the Indian Premier League after extending his contract with Nottinghamshire

Hopps: Hales wins IPL battle with Notts

England batsman Alex Hales has been cleared to play in the Indian Premier League after extending his contract with Nottinghamshire until 2016. According to the new deal, Hales will be granted time off to play in the next three seasons of the IPL, which clashes with the first few weeks of the county season, subject to him securing a contract in excess of $400,000 per year.Hales, who has played 21 T20 internationals, is currently the top-ranked batsman in the ICC T20 rankings. Samit Patel has also been granted permission to enter the auctions next year and will be given a similar exemption if he also secures a top-bracket deal.Hales expressed his happiness on reaching the agreement and said he was looking forward to the three T20s against Australia after the Ashes. “I’m pleased to have come to an agreement with Notts because I want to spend my entire career here and I hope that will happen now that I’ve been given the opportunity to enter the auction,” he said.”I’m not aware of specific interest from any given IPL franchise but I’m focused on performing well in the Big Bash because there are a lot of eyes on that tournament. I’m hoping to be involved in the Twenty20 matches between England and Australia which I hope can give me a platform to demonstrate my skills and stir interest from IPL teams.”Alex Hales is the top-ranked batsman in the ICC T20 rankings•PA PhotosHales also said he considered focusing only on T20s after struggling for form in the County Championship this year. “Last season was tough for me because I was sky high in two formats and at rock bottom with the red ball,” he said. “It did cross my mind to go freelance and focus on Twenty20 full time but I’ve had time to think and I’m still driven to do well in four-day cricket and to break into England’s one-day set-up.”Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, Mick Newell, said it was important for them to strike a balance between Hales’ opportunity to earn a substantial amount of money and the team’s needs. “We were very keen to secure an extended commitment from Alex, he was understandably keen to enter the IPL auction and there was a mutual will to find a compromise that we could all live with,” Newell said.”It’s hard for us to deny an individual the opportunity to earn life-changing amounts of money but the team also has to be considered so it made sense to allow him to enter the auction to see if there is sufficient interest in his services to secure a high-value contract.”Hales will depart for Australia early next month for a stint with Adelaide Strikers in the BBL. Nottinghamshire hope to sign an established batsman as cover for Hales for the opening weeks of the domestic season, while discussions with Michael Lumb, Hales’ England opening partner in T20 and another who has expressed ambitions to play in the IPL again, are ongoing.

MI vs KKR: Ashwani Kumar takes four to demolish KKR for 116 on IPL debut

The left-arm fast bowler became the first Indian to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut

Alagappan Muthu31-Mar-20253:07

Does Rohit have a technique issue?

Ashwani Kumar became the first Indian bowler, and sixth overall, to pick up four or more wickets on IPL debut and on the back of his performance Mumbai Indians wrapped up Kolkata Knight Riders for 116 in their first home game of IPL 2025.The 23-year-old left-arm seamer from Punjab tripled his career tally of wickets – from two to six – over the course of one evening. He dismissed the KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his first ball. He took down Rinku Singh and Andre Russell. This league does not present many higher quality of wickets. The most impressive thing about Kumar was how hard he was to line up. He had an orthodox bowling action. His speeds were largely in the early to mid 130kph range. Those are the kind of bowlers that get smashed around in the IPL. But try as they might, KKR were never able to do it. Kumar came to prominence because of his performances in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 trophy last year where he displayed an affinity for the death overs. He didn’t really bowl in that phase of the innings against KKR but he did show why he could find success in high-pressure situations. It was his control of length.Rinku tried to take him down, but one ball after coming down the track and hitting him for four, he was caught on the deep-point boundary. Kumar pulled his length back to surprise the batter. Russell tried to take him down, but one ball after clearing his front leg and smacking him through the line, he was beaten by a bouncer and then knocked over by a 140kph good length delivery that surprised the batter again.Mumbai are almost surely looking at their first win of IPL 2025 after losing their first two games. KKR, meanwhile, were left wondering what had gone wrong. They were put in to bat and they seemed very conscious of putting up a par-plus total, their batters going on the attack even though they lost Sunil Narine and Quinton de Kock in the first two overs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi looked good for his 26 off 16 but he fell immediately after the powerplay. That left KKR five down and forced them to bring in Manish Pandey as an Impact Player, which meant they will be going into the bowling innings short of options. The move didn’t work with Pandey falling for 19 off 14.

Norwell hauls Gloucs off the bottom

ScorecardLiam Norwell claimed five wickets as Gloucestershire moved off the bottom of the County Championship table with a 207-run victory inside three days against Northamptonshire at Bristol.Norwell followed up his 3 for 23 in the first innings with 5for 51 in a Northamptonshire second-innings total of 224 that featured half-centuries from David Sales and Andrew Hall. The visitors were set an unlikely target of 432 after bowling Gloucestershire out for 311 in the morning session from an overnight 286 for 6. Will Gidman failed to add to his 52 as Hall finished with 5 for 50.Gloucestershire took 20 points from their third Championship win of the season and have one game left to further improve their position, while Northamptonshire had to settle for three in their final fixture. The pitch had aided the seamers all through the game and that continued to be the case as Gloucestershire added only 25 to their score for the loss of their last four wickets. Hall claimed the last three after David Willey had removed Will Gidman, but it was too late to prevent Northamptonshire facing a near impossible task.Opener Stephen Peters fell lbw to the fourth ball of his side’s second innings, leg before to Will Gidman without a run on the board, and it was 51 for 2 when Niall O’Brien edged Norwell to wicketkeeper Jon Batty. Just before lunch Kyle Coetzer was bowled by Norwell and, although Sales batted effortlessly for his 55, he too had his stumps disturbed by the same bowler to make it 80 for 4.A stubborn partnership of 78 between Hall and Rob Newton, who made 44, ended when the latter pulled a short ball from Norwell straight to Ian Cockbain at midwicket. James Middlebrook and David Murphy went cheaply to Benny Howell and Norwell respectively and by tea the result was all but decided with the visitors on 184 for 7.Hall fell for 56 straight after the break without a run added, bowled by Howell, who finished with 2 for 37 having made a handy contribution with his medium pace to a Gloucestershire side lacking a specialist spinner.Jack Brooks was taken in the slips off James Fuller for 22 after a defiant stand of 39 with Wiley and the game ended when Luke Evans was out for a duck, caught by Cockbain off Anthony Ireland.Norwell took six wickets in an innings on debut against Derbyshire at the start of last season, but was then plagued by back trouble. He recently claimed 6 for 52 in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Leicestershire at Grace Road and Gloucestershire will hope for more of the same next summer.

Arnel, Vettori star in Northern Districts win

Northern Districts fought back to beat Canterbury at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, winning their third game of the tournament and taking the lead in the points table. Asked to bat, ND were bowled out for 197 in their first innings, opener and captain Brad Wilson being the only half-centurion. Willie Lonsdale bagged six wickets to put his team ahead but ND hit back hard. Brent Arnel was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged a five-for to bowl out Canterbury for 121 and earn his team a handy 76-run lead. Only wicketkeeper Reece Young put up any serious resistance, scoring 55.The ND batsmen, in their second innings, ensured the advantage didn’t slip. Wilson made 60, Joesph Yovich guided the innings with his fourth first-class hundred and James Marshall scored at a fair clip to make 92. There was more to come from the middle order. Daniel Vettori, Daniel Flynn and BJ Watling all chipped in with useful contributions to stretch their team’s score to 426 for 7, at which point they declared.Set 503 to win, Canterbury fought hard, putting in a better effort with the bat it wasn’t enough. Opener George Worker made a half-century and the first three wickets yielded 155 runs. But the pressure increased manifold when Canterbury slipped to 202 for 6. Though Henry Nicholls managed an unbeaten 93 and shared a 76-run stand with Matt Henry down the order, ND were always ahead, making steady strikes. Vettori starred with a five-for while Arnel picked up three. Canterbury were bowled out for 368, sliding to their third defeat.Wellington registered a comfortable seven-wicket win over Auckland at Colin Maiden Park. The stand-out performer for the winning team was seamer Mark Gillespie, who collected his maiden match haul of ten wickets in first-class cricket. His 5 for 67 in the first innings helped Wellington bowl out Auckland for 320. There were half-centuries from Neal Parlane, Anaru Kitchen and Colin de Grandhomme and some support from the lower order but no contribution was substantial enough to stretch the score to imposing proportions. Openers Josh Brodie and Michael Papps led the way for Wellington in their reply. Brodie achieved a career-best score of 210, striking 30 boundaries in an innings that lasted more than eight hours. Papps made 111 in an opening stand of 236. Luke Woodcock made a half-century in the middle order, arresting a slide after Wellington lost four wickets for 63. The visitors eventually managed 479, securing a lead of 159.Gillespie left his mark in the second innings as well, this time skittling Auckland for just 201. He ran through the middle order to bag his second five-for of the match and contributions of 83 and 56 from Kitchen and Colin Munro were the only ones of any significance in the Auckland innings. Wellington lost three wickets in the chase but a target of 43 wasn’t going to put them under pressure.Central Districts overcame Otago by five wickets in a game in which both teams made sporting declarations to give themselves a shot at victory after the entire first day was lost to rain at the Queenstown Events Centre.Otago batted first and declared at 281 for 8 in 95 overs, opener Craig Cumming making 129 and Sam Wells chipping in with 59 in the middle order. CD replied by declaring on 198 for 6 in 66 overs. They were in trouble at 63 for 4 at one stage but wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk steadied the innings with an unbeaten 72. Though they conceded a lead of 83 by declaring early, CD backed themselves to do well with the ball in the second innings and the move paid off. Thanks to a combined bowling effort, CD dismissed Otago for 115 in just 36.5 overs in the second innings. Otago seemed well placed at 89 for 2 at one stage, but they collapsed, losing eight wickets for 26. Kyle Jarvis picked up three wickets, so did Daniel Wightman; each of the five CD bowlers picked up at least a wicket each. In their chase of 199, CD were struggling at 53 for 4 but van Wyk again came to the rescue, scoring his second half-century of the match, making an unbeaten 74 to guide his team to victory in the company of Carl Cachopa, with whom he added a match-clinching 78. The win was CD’s first in the competition.
