Canada lower order resists after Burger strikes

Namibia bowled well but two crucial partnerships allowed Canada to end the day at 264 for 9 in Windhoek

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Apr-2012
Scorecard
Canada’s lower order put up a stiff resistance after Sarel Burger had rocked them with four wickets. Namibia chose to field and created immediate impact with the ball as Canada lost their first two wickets for 18. Canada lost a further two wickets to Burger and were reduced to 46 for 4. But a useful 112-run partnership between Zeeshan Siddiqi, who scored 87, and Tyson Gordon, who scored 42, pulled Canada out of trouble. However, Canada scoring more than 200 was largely due to a 55-run eighth-wicket partnership between captain Rizwan Cheema and Junaid Siddiqui. Both teams are lingering at the bottom of the points table and this game presents an opportunity to score a win and catch up with the other sides.

ICC considers 12-team World Cup for 2015

Twelve teams could contest the 2015 World Cup as the ICC is considering a compromise between the 14 teams of 2011 and a tight 10-team model currently on the table

Daniel Brettig and Nagraj Gollapudi04-Apr-2011Twelve teams may contest the 2015 World Cup as the ICC is considering a compromise between the 14 teams of 2011 and a tight 10-team model currently on the table for the tournament’s next edition. The ICC’s executive council is meeting in Mumbai on Monday and on the agenda is the format for the next World Cup, to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand, following the rousing success of this year’s edition, which was won by India.Following much discussion of the 10-team tournament favoured by organisers, and an outcry by Associate nations given their likely exclusion, the ICC may now be leaning towards a 12-team event, possibly with two pools of six teams followed by quarter-finals, semis and the final.”At the moment it is still 10 teams but we are discussing the 12-team option,” an ICC official told ESPNcricinfo. The same format was used in the 1996 tournament, co-hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and won by the Sri Lankans. Another path is to choose a round-robin model where each team plays each other once before the semi-finals, as was the case when Australia and New Zealand hosted in 1992.Prior to his team’s departure for Bangladesh, new Australian captain Michael Clarke reiterated the desire of most international players to see Associate nations given their chance on the limited-overs game’s biggest stage.”I really enjoy seeing the minnow teams getting an opportunity to be honest, I guess it’s up to the ICC to work out whatever they think is for the betterment of the game, that’s obviously their priority,” Clarke said in Sydney.”For me I think the two World Cups I’ve been involved in have been fantastic, it certainly does feel between games like you have a long period, when you’ve got six and seven days between games, but I’ve enjoyed seeing some of the minnow teams or all of the minnow teams play.”I think we’ve seen throughout this World Cup that there were a few upsets and some great cricket played, so I just hope and am certain that the ICC are looking to improve the game of cricket.”Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said the executive council meeting would finalise much of the discussions surrounding the next event, plans for which are already being mapped out by the Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket.”The length of 50 overs will find certain teams out but I think there are 10 teams that can seriously compete in that format,” Lorgat told Sky Sports News. “That’s a debate we are still finalising; in fact the board meeting over the next two days will consider that and will determine which teams will play in the 2015 World Cup.”Ireland were the best Associate nation at each of the past two tournaments, and their chief executive Warren Deutrom had said the deferral of a decision on the tournament format until after the 2011 event was a sensible one.”I think that is the right decision,” Deutrom said. “What it does is allow the ICC board to make a decision based on all the evidence, rather than no evidence whatsoever. We are pleased because if two or three teams do perform well during the group stages, that does provide an option to look favourably on qualification, and to see if the number of teams is quite right.”

Zimbabwe capable of Twenty20 upset – Alan Butcher

Alan Butcher, the new Zimbabwe coach, is banking on his team to pull off an upset during the opening round of World Twenty20 matches in West Indies

Cricinfo staff16-Apr-2010Alan Butcher, the new Zimbabwe coach, is banking on his team to pull off an upset during the opening round of World Twenty20 matches in the West Indies. They have been grouped with New Zealand and Sri Lanka for the opening phase of the tournament and Butcher believes the nature of the format gives his side a chance.”We could have been in a worse group, I tell you,” Butcher said. “We have to try and match the standards of at least one of these two teams, if we do that we can make it. The nature of Twenty20 cricket, however, is that teams can be upset by a single heroic achievement. One catch, fifty or one good over can turn things around for any team; we have to take every half chance and catch we can get, that’s all there is to it.”In an aim to give themselves the best chance of success, Zimbabwe are arriving in the Caribbean ahead of many other teams for a warm-up schedule that includes a four-day and one-day matches against West Indies A, plus a one-dayer against West Indies before the official World Twenty20 practice matches. The squad has recent experience of conditions in the Caribbean – including Guyana where they will play their group matches – after the recent tour where they lost the one-day series 4-1 having started with victory in the Twenty20 international.Zimbabwe’s tactics throughout that series were based around their spinners, with the new ball given to Ray Price. Butcher joined that trip late after his appointment to the coaching role, but is set to continue with a similar style of play on what is likely to be a slow, low wicket at Providence in Guyana.”We had a game plan in the last West Indies tour that would have really worked if we had batted better,” he said. “I will work with a similar strategy. My overall strategy will unfold as we go through our four day match and two ODIs, and its details will become more refined after that.”We are working hard to make sure that there are enough good options and combinations to force people to get out there and bring the best out of themselves.”

Man Utd player ratings vs Man City: Surely David de Gea can't stay as No.1?! Goalkeeper's error proves costly in FA Cup final loss

The goalkeeper should have saved Ilkay Gundogan's second goal in what turned out to be a tense and tight final that City deservedly won at Wembley

Manchester United pushed Manchester City all the way in the FA Cup final, but when they needed David de Gea to stay on his toes in the tough moments, the goalkeeper fell badly short. The Spaniard was left flummoxed by Ilkay Gundogan's unstoppable volley – the fastest goal ever scored in an FA Cup final – but he really should have done better with the German midfielder's second goal.

De Gea may have had limited visibility due to a crowded penalty area, but the ball seemed to bounce towards his corner in slow motion and he was far too slow to get across goal.

City's second goal arrived after United had admirably fought their way back into the game and equalised through Bruno Fernando's penalty, even if they were fortunate to be awarded it for an accidental handball – spotted by VAR – by Jack Grealish.

United's best hope of an equaliser lay in substitute Alejandro Garnacho, but the truth is City deserved to win the game. The fact United stayed in the match after a nightmare start shows the team are still heading in the right direction.

GOAL rates the Manchester United players from Wembley Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David de Gea (5/10):

Stationary for Gundogan's first goal and was very slow to get across for the second. Did well to get in the way of a De Bruyne shot after that. His kicking was hit and miss.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (6/10):

Got his tackling spot-on. As usual, left something to be desired in attack, even though he ended up forcing the penalty by challenging Grealish in the air.

    Victor Lindelof (6/10):

Composed on the ball and dealt with the danger well. Should not be blamed for heading the ball to Gundogan for the opening goal.

    Raphael Varane (7/10):

Showed good positioning and cut out plenty of through balls without over-committing himself. Volleyed wide following the free-kick late in the first half.

    Luke Shaw (6/10):

Fine defensively but did not do enough going forward.

    Midfield

    Christian Eriksen (5/10):

Did well to contain City after their blistering start. Like the rest of United's midfield, he got overrun in the second half and was the first to go off.

    Casemiro (7/10):

Showed real leadership to ensure United did not fall apart in the first half. Imposed himself on the game and made important interventions in defence and attack.

    Fred (6/10):

Made the foul which led to Gundogan's second goal and was often over-run but he never stopped trying and showed courage to play the ball out when under pressure.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Bruno Fernandes (7/10):

Responsible for some of United's best moments and he showed nerves of steel to roll his penalty past Ortega.

    Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Barely got into the game. Was not helped by starting at centre-forward and being asked to knock down balls over the top.

    Jadon Sancho (5/10):

Had some nice touches and short passes but too often slowed down the attack. Once more, he left the pitch without doing anything meaningful.

    Subs & Manager

    Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

Inches away from equalising with a sumptuous curler. Looked like United's only hope in the second half.

    Wout Weghorst (6/10):

Played some nice passes when he was on but never looked like scoring.

    Scott McTominay (N/A):

Headed over the bar in added time.

    Erik ten Hag (6/10):

Made an error by starting Rashford as centre-forward although he had limited options due to Martial's injury.

Xavi's team has a comfortable nine-point lead at the top of the table over their arch-rivals from Madrid. However, when the two teams met in La Liga earlier this season, it was Real Madrid that triumphed 3-1.

Barcelona will want nothing less than to deny Madrid a Clasico league double and also extend their lead at the top of the standings even further.

Getty ImagesTeam analysisBarcelona team news

Recent form

Following back-to-back defeats against Manchester United and Almeria in the Europa League and La Liga, respectively, Barcelona have bounced back with three wins in a row. Out of their last three wins, one came against Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey.

Key players

With 15 goals and five assists to his name from 21 matches, Robert Lewandowski is thriving in the league for Barcelona. The former Bayern striker is loving life in Spain and will be the one to look out for in El Clasico on Sunday.

Injuries & suspensions

Ronald Araujo is set to return for Barcelona as he has served his one-game ban for a red card. Pedri and Ousmane Dembele remain unavailable due to injuries.

Tactical approach

Barcelona's watertight defence has only let in eight goals from 25 matches this season, 11 fewer than Real Madrid's tally. They will be expected to control the possession and would continue to be hard to score against, even in such a big game like El Clasico.

Position Players

Recent form

Real Madrid have only lost once in their last 10 outings but that defeat was against Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa Del Rey semi-final. Carlo Ancelotti's team will take confidence from their last two games which was both wins. In their last outing, they confirmed progress to the next round of the Champions League with a win over Liverpool.

Key players

Karim Benzema has been in fine form in front of goal for Madrid and will be expected to play an important role in the crucial clash against Barcelona. He has missed games this season due to injuries but boast a slightly better scoring rate (0.73 goals per game) than league topscorer Lewandowski (0.71 goals per game).

Injuries & suspensions

David Alaba is Real Madrid's only unavailable player due to injury ahead of El Clasico. Ferland Mendy returned to the squad after a successful recovery from his injury.

Benzema picked up an injury against Liverpool but is expected to be fit for El Clasico.

Tactical approach

Real Madrid were the victors during the last three Clasico fixtures at Camp Nou and they will have to take confidence from that to threaten the strong Barcelona defence. With the team already nine points behind the league leaders, Ancelotti will want his team to be efficient in order to grab maximum points in this must-win clash for Los Blancos.

The Clasico game between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be played at Camp Nou on Sunday, March 19. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8pm GMT (4pm EDT).

Match predictions & expected outcome

It has only been two weeks since the last El Clasico fixture and the fans have the chance to see Barcelona and Real Madrid go head-to-head again. Their previous meeting was in the first leg of the Copa Del Rey semi final and it was won by Barcelona, courtesy an own goal by Eder Militao.

The upcoming fixture Real Madrid's last realistic chance to bring down Barcelona's nine-point lead and have any hope of a title race in La Liga this season. It would be a surprise if Real Madrid don't go all-in to claim a victory and make it three wins in a row at Camp Nou. Barcelona, however, remain the favourites to win, thanks to their current league form and their unbeaten home record in the league this season.

Key battles to watch out for

Benzema is wearing his scoring boots this season, but he will have his task cut out against Ronald Araujo and co. who have only let in eight goals from 25 matches in La Liga. At the other end of the field, Antonio Rudiger will have to be on high alert against the league's top scorer Lewandowski.

Vinicius Jr gave Trent Alexander-Arnold a torrid time in Madrid's last game and Araujo will be tasked with keeping him quiet – keep an eye on that one.

Potential game changers

With 15 goals and five assists in 25 league games, Lewandowski has led the front line brilliantly for Xavi's team and Real Madrid's ability to keep him quiet can decide the game. The same applies to how Barcelona deal with Benzema at the other end, since Madrid's chances will depend on how the Barcelona defence is outwitted over the course of ninety minutes.

GettyOur final thoughts on the matchBarcelona go into the game as favourites due to their impressive league form and unbeaten record at home this season.Lewandowski and Benzema have big roles to play in the final third for their respective teams if they are to get a positive result. It is must-win clash for Real Madrid, who are nine points behind leaders Barcelona after 25 matchdays in La Liga.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Who has the better Clasico record?

Barcelona to wear special kit for El Clasico

Pulisic, Adli and 15 new stars to watch out for at 2022 World Cup

The dust has settled on the 2018 blockbuster in Russia, so Goal takes a look at who could light up the next tournament in Qatar

France are the 2018 world champions, while Luka Modric and Kylian Mbappe have been crowned the best player and best young star of the World Cup in Russia. But who will earn the acclaim when the jamboree moves on to Qatar four years from now?

Many of the nations who took part this year have further talents to get excited about seeing in the years to come, while there are plenty coming through with those countries who didn't make it to Russia.

So here Goal looks at 15 players who could well make a lasting first appearance at a World Cup finals tournament at the next event in 2022.

Getty ImagesYacine Adli (France)

If you thought 2018 winners France were loaded with talent, the bad news for the rest of the world is that there are more high-calibre players to come in four years’ time.

Dynamic midfielder Yacine Adli is one such star of the future, having already made his Ligue 1 debut in the final game of Paris Saint-Germain’s 2017-18 season.

New Arsenal boss Unai Emery had been hopeful of taking Adli with him to north London but the 17-year-old has belief in his ability to break through at the Parc des Princes.

AdvertisementGettyHoussem Aouar (France)

With Liverpool and Barcelona among those said to be tracking his progress, it is fair to say that Houssem Aouar is already making a name for himself in the European game.

A regular starter for Lyon last season when still only 19, the midfielder has the versatility to potentially make him a key member of the France squad heading to Qatar to defend their title.

At home in the centre of midfield, he can also fill the No.10 slot or play off the wing.

TélamSantiago Ascacibar (Argentina)

One of the most glaring elements of Argentina’s failure to recreate their run of 2014 with another final appearance in Russia was Javier Mascherano’s decline in the centre of midfield.

But now that the former Barcelona man has announced his international retirement, the new Albiceleste coach could look to build his side around Stuttgart’s Santiago Ascacibar instead.

The 21-year-old has the quality and discipline to carry out the role at the base of the midfield, which would allow Argentina to regain some control in the engine room.

Getty ImagesJosip Brekalo (Croatia)

For some, Croatia’s run to the World Cup final is the peak of their possibilities. But with players of the quality of Josip Brekalo still to break in to the senior side, there is plenty of hope for the future.

The 20-year-old attacker spent 2017 with Stuttgart and was such a success that Wolfsburg recalled him early from his loan spell in January of this year.

With the ability to play anywhere across the attacking midfield line, Brekalo offers the kind of versatility that national coaches love in their squads.

Code violations in IPL 2014 cleared by BCCI's anti-corruption unit

The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit had pulled up IPL franchises and players for failing to adhere to protocol during the 2014 tournament, but the board and teams confirmed the ACU was satisfied with the explanations it had received

ESPNcricinfo staff22-May-2015The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit had pulled up various IPL franchises and players for failing to adhere to protocol during the 2014 tournament, but both the board and teams confirmed the ACU was satisfied with the explanations it had received and the inquiries were considered closed. In an email to some officials in the previous BCCI administration, ACU head Ravi Sawani outlined instances where franchises had failed to provide guest lists for private parties and sponsor events in advance, and certain players had allowed visitors into their rooms without informing the on-duty ACU officer, according to a report in the .ESPNcricinfo confirmed the contents of Sawani’s email with BCCI officials. The ACU’s concern that certain players were still not following the code strictly stemmed from the scandal of the 2013 season, when some players and team officials were found to be involved in corrupt activities that brought the game into disrepute. One example Sawani cited, according to the report, was of a private party organised by Kings XI Punjab owner Preity Zinta on a boat on April 30, 2014. In this instance, though only players were invited, there was also a friend of Zinta’s in attendance, whose presence the ACU was unaware of. It is understood the ACU wanted to first establish whether there was a party and whether there was an outsider present. The newspaper also cited similar examples of Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan and Delhi Daredevils owners hosting events involving their squads without intimating the ACU. The Daredevils reportedly hosted a party at a five-star hotel in Delhi before IPL 2014 where all the players and support staff mingled with more than 100 outsiders.A BCCI official said franchises have started sending out guest lists for private parties and sponsor events in advance to the ACU, which vets the names and sends an alert in case of any undesirable elements being present.Another instance Sawani cited involved two Chennai Super Kings players allowing friends to stay overnight in their hotel rooms without informing the ACU officer. They breached ACU protocol, which states no individuals, “except blood relations or wife/ partner,” should be entertained by players in their room.Ranjib Biswal, who was the IPL chairman in 2014, said all the necessary actions had been taken by the BCCI. “Our ACU chief Ravi Sawani was constantly in touch with all the franchises,” Biswal told ESPNcricinfo on Friday. “Wherever necessary, he had reprimanded the owners and players concerned”A Kings XI spokesperson confirmed the boat party had taken place, according to the newspaper report, and that “the BCCI was satisfied with the action taken by the franchise.” A Delhi Daredevils spokesperson also said the details of their function were shared with the BCCI-IPL management through various channels.Ever since three Rajasthan Royals players – Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila – and a Chennai Super Kings team official Gurunath Meiyappan were arrested during IPL 2013 for their alleged involvement in corruption, the BCCI has been extra vigilant about keeping the game clean. There is emphasis on educating players during other domestic tournaments as well as IPL, and all franchise squads are accompanied with an integrity officer who keeps a watch on player movements.BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur had said the efforts were paying off. “As far the players being approached is concerned, the BCCI education policy is working very well. If someone is being approached by anyone, he has reported back to the anti-corruption unit,” Thakur said. “I think this is the thing to highlight and admire that the players are reporting back.”
